Casualties as explosion hits largest US base in Afghanistan: NATO

An explosion struck the largest US military base in Afghanistan early Saturday, causing some casualties, NATO said.

No militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast, which occurs as the Taliban step up nationwide attacks before the onset of winter, when fighting usually ebbs.

"We can confirm that there was an explosion at Bagram Airfield this morning just after 5:30 am (0100 GMT). There have been casualties," the military coalition said in a brief statement.

ANOTHER U.S. MASSACRE IN AFGHANISTAN

The latest massacre of many innocent people by U.S. forces in Afghanistan provides another demonstration as to why it is imperative that the American people stop deferring to the authority of the national security state and demand the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

In a war that has now gone on for 16 years, U.S. forces just killed at least 32 more civilians, many of whom were children. Another 25 people were wounded. Of course, this is on top of all the wedding parties, hospitals, and other victims of U.S. bombing attacks that have brought the death toll from U.S. interventionism in Afghanistan to more than 200,000, not to mention the wounded, maimed, homeless, and refugees. In the last seven days alone, 95 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan and 111 injured.

How many of those 30 people, including the children, who are now being buried had anything to do with the 9/11 attacks? It is a virtual certainty that none of them did.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This country murders innocents abroad with impunity, for economic goals, and then some supremely dim Americans wonder why foreign countries don't particularly like us.

It's the murders, stupid!!

But were I a betting woman, I would be willing to bet that the US will NEVER leave Afghanistan.

And why?!?

Because of the massive profit in the opium trade, which various US "alphabet soup" agencies love to use for off-the-books operations they could never get funded by Congress. As reported this October at thefiscaltimes.com:

America is losing a war in Afghanistan, and the casualties are on the streets at home. With a heroin epidemic killing more than 10,000 Americans a year, a new UN report says the production of opium – the raw material of heroin – is up 43 percent in 2016 in Afghanistan.

But you have to understand; the US government is losing the war on drugs on purpose.

As reported at americanfreepress.com in March of 2014:

Across the U.S., heroin use has skyrocketed. But how are these drugs getting into the country, and is the CIA back to its old tricks, using drugs money to fund covert operations? By Victor Thorn — The tragic overdose death of Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman on February 2, brought renewed interest to the subject of cheap heroin on America’s streets. Across the country, heroin use is on the rise, despite the billions of dollars spent by United States law enforcement fighting it. Recently, southwestern Pennsylvania suffered 22 overdoses in little more than a week’s time from tainted heroin, and dozens of users were hospitalized in Camden, New Jersey due to a highly potent batch that was being sold on the streets of that city. One of the big questions asked by naïve media talking heads is: Where does all of this heroin come from? The answer is the same as it was a decade ago following a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)-led invasion of Afghanistan: 75%-80% of the world’s heroin is exported from Afghanistan. In spite of the fact that the U.S. military controls a great deal of that mountainous country, production levels hit record highs last year. Since American forces have been entrenched in Afghanistan for a dozen years and have squandered over $700B to date, AMERICAN FREE PRESS has long been one of the few publications to openly address a highly taboo subject. Namely, elements within the CIA having been heavily involved with illegal narcotics trafficking since the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s and Iran-Contra in the 1980s. On March 13, this reporter contacted investigative historian Robert Morrow, whose research into the murder of CIA-sanctioned pilot Barry Seal is unparalleled. Seal claims to have run drugs for U.S. intelligence. When asked about official criminality associated with Afghan’s opium business, Morrow replied: “U.S. government involvement in the drug trade ebbs and flows depending on a particular administration’s level of corruption. If a Bush or Clinton is in office, you better believe it’s rip-roaring.” Morrow provided more insights. “Or, maybe their complicity is so institutionalized that presidents don’t even control it. Intelligence agencies and the military do. The government has many faces. One DEA [Drug Enforcement Administration] agent could be entirely honest while another is on the take from drug cartels and the government.” Delving into deep state secrets, Morrow stressed: “The people who ran all the drugs into America during the Iran-Contra era were George Bush, Sr., CIA Director William Casey, Oliver North and both Clintons. Airports like the one in Mena, Arkansas that Bill and Hillary operated stretched all across the southern U.S. You need to remember that Barry Seal [who allegedly flew more cocaine into America than any pilot in history] was personal friends with Bill Clinton. He also spoke with Bush, Sr. on a weekly basis.” Morrow turned his attention to Clinton’s partner-in-crime. “As Vice President, George Bush, Sr. had all aspects of law enforcement answering to him,” said Murrow. “That way, legitimate police officers weren’t arresting his CIA drug dealers.” Ending on a riveting note, Morrow said: “These topics aren’t expressed in the mainstream media because it would be detrimental to the government’s credibility. Nobody is supposed to know that certain elements running our country are drug dealers, murderers and thugs.”

So the reality in the US is that the biggest drug deal in the country...IS THE COUNTRY!!

The Loosening Grip: A Beginner’s Guide to Death Throes

Oh good. The world reaches a crossroads, or probably a road off a cliff, just when I want to relax and watch gratuitous violence on the tube. To judge by the rapid drift of events aboard our planetary asylum, the talons of Washington and New York on the world’s throat are fast being pried a-loose. The Global American Imperium is dying. Or so it sure looks anyway.

I say talons of “New York and Washington” because America’s foreign policy, forged in those two cities, belongs entirely to them. Americans have no influence on it. Further, none of of what the Empire does abroad is of any benefit to Americans.

But importantly, he, like Hillary, would most likely not hesitate to push the Red Bottom, when asked to do so by their masters.

Afghanistan opium production up 43% - UN drugs watchdog

Opium production in Afghanistan has increased by 43% in the past year, United Nations officials have said.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said the area used to farm the poppy plant, the source of opium, increased by 10% to 201,000 hectares.
But better farming conditions resulted in a higher yield per hectare, increasing overall production.

Afghanistan is the world's largest producer of the substance, which is the main ingredient in heroin.

Growing opium is a crime in the country, but it is still a major cash crop for impoverished farming communities.

The Taliban also taxes poppy production in areas it controls, which is a major source of income for its military activities.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The reason for the huge increase in opium output has to do with the ugly reality that it is used by various US "alphabet soup" agencies to fund "off the books operations", then the money is laundered by such "proper" banking organisations as HSBC, and Wachovia, now a part of Wells Fargo.

CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT CAUGHT HIDING MILLIONS IN SECRET ASSET FORFEITURE FUND

A detailed report released in September 2016 by the Chicago Reader unveiled a secret civil asset forfeiture fund that amounted to nearly $50 million in seized cash which the Chicago Police Department was attempting to keep for themselves. The detailed analysis shows that CPD officials were attempting to pocket 65% of the cash and assets they brought in through civil asset forfeiture. This is policing for profit, and it is no different than highway robbery.

The Reader reports:

Since 2009, the year CPD began keeping electronic records of its forfeiture accounts, the department has brought in nearly $72 million in cash and assets through civil forfeiture, keeping nearly $47 million for itself and sending on almost $18 million to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office and almost $7.2 million to the Illinois State Police, according to our analysis of CPD records.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Thoroughly cringe-worthy, but typical of the way things are run in Chicago.

A Western covert intel operative with knowledge of how Afghanistan was handled at the highest levels in Washington lays down the case:

«Osama bin Laden was a failed CIA asset that was used as a pretext to invade Afghanistan to restart the heroin trade, which is a trillion-dollar business. Mullah Omar was our ally against the Soviets, and a most honorable man, who shut down all the heroin plantations in Afghanistan after the Taliban took over as they considered the over 300,000 dead who died from heroin overdoses per year immoral. We turned on him and betrayed him. Osama was a guest of Mullah Omar, and he merely asked for evidence of Osama's involvement in 9/11. Since there was none, as he was not involved, none could be furnished. Bush II ridiculed on television even the thought that he would be required to give evidence to a bow and arrow Mullah Omar».

Post 9/11 Afghanistan: Opium Cultivation, Production Increases Nearly 20-Fold

Since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the area under opium cultivation in the country has increased 23 fold to an area nearly ten times the size of Washington, D.C., while production of the illicit drug has skyrocketed 18-fold, from 185 metric tons to 3,300.

Opium cultivation and production has thrived over the course of the Afghanistan war despite a dramatic drop after the U.S. and NATO ended their combat mission in Afghanistan and withdrew most of their troops at the end of 2014.

Pentagon And CIA at War in Syria

What a mess! In the crazy Syrian war, US-backed and armed groups are fighting other US-backed rebel groups. How can this be?

It is so because the Obama White House had stirred up war in Syria but then lost control of the process. When the US has a strong president, he can usually keep the military and intelligence agencies on a tight leash.
But the Obama administration has had a weak secretary of defense and a bunch of lady strategists who are the worst military commanders since Louis XV, who put his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, in charge of French military forces during the Seven Year’s War.

As a result, the two arms of offensive US strategic power, the Pentagon and CIA, went separate ways in Syria. Growing competition between the US military and militarized CIA broke into the open in Syria.

Fed up with the astounding incompetence of the White House, the US military launched and supported its own rebel groups in Syria, while CIA did the same.

The Neocon in the Oval Office

Neoconservatives are wedded to war, death and destruction. It is the foundation of their policy and it dominates the culture that they have created.

If Hillary Rodham Clinton becomes US President, she will be the first neoconservative to actually occupy that office.

Israel and its supporters were inseparable from the neoconservative movement from the beginning.

Many neocons were already Zionist or pro-Zionist, and their support for aggressive militarism was largely indistinguishable from Israel’s own strategic plans.

To the extent that the neocon movement could sell Israel’s views as solidly American, it could bend the resources of the most powerful military on earth for Israel’s own ends.

NAVY COVERED UP AFGHAN SEX SLAVE PROBLEM TO PUNISH MARINE – DOCUMENTS

US Navy lawyers have advised against hearing a Marine’s appeal on the premise that it would grant attention to an Afghan sex slave scandal. The officer sent a classified memo via his own email to warn fellow Marines of danger, shortly before three were killed.
In the summer of 2012, Captain Brian Donlon reached out to a fellow Marine Corps officer – Major Jason Brezler, then in the USMC Reserves – to ask about Sarwar Jan, a police chief in Afghanistan’s Helmand province with a reputation for corruption and keeping boys as sex slaves. Brezler answered by sending a dossier on Jan, using his Yahoo email account. Donlon warned him the document was classified, and refused to open it; Brezler reported the violation to the military authorities himself.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, it was "propagandistically inconvenient" to mention that some of our "Best Afghani Buds" indulge in child sex abuse?!?

No. This behaviour should be shouted from the rooftops, so that Americans really know what American and NATO troops are not supposed to either see, or mention.

Taliban fighters overrun district in eastern Afghanistan

Taliban insurgents overran a district in eastern Afghanistan, killing and wounding dozens of police and soldiers and threatening strategically important road routes to Pakistan, officials said on Saturday.

Abdul Rahman Solamal, governor of Jani Khel district in the eastern province of Paktia, said that after heavy overnight fighting, security forces had pulled out of the district, which sits at an intersection linking eight districts and which connects Paktia with neighbouring Khost province and Pakistan.

“Our district was surrounded by Taliban for almost five days,” he told media. “Hundreds of them attacked our check posts overnight.

At least one student died and 14 other people were hurt Wednesday after a "complex" gun and bomb attack at American University of Afghanistan in western Kabul, police and the head of the city's hospitals reported, as the military worked for hours to free students and staff inside.

Security forces were conducting a clearing operation to track down the "terrorists" and slowly rescue teachers and hundreds of students who huddled in classrooms and safe rooms, police spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. Sediqqi said it was not clear if there were one or two attackers.

US to Send More Troops to South Afghanistan to Resist Taliban Gains

With gains in the Helmand Province mounting for Taliban forces, and the Afghan military struggling to defend both that and the other provinces around the country which the Taliban are advancing into, the Pentagon has announced an additional deployment of US ground troops into the Helmand capital of Lashkar Gah.

Officials are trying to present the deployment as primarily a “training” operation, in keeping with a policy of claiming that everything they do is “non-combat,” but the reality is that there are very limited Afghan forces in Lashkar Gah, and a deployment of around 100 troops by the US is almost certain to mean direct combat roles.

Brig. Gen. Charles Cleveland insisted US forces were committed to not allow the loss of Lashkar Gah, and clearly they can’t do this with a little idle encouragement to Afghan forces who are increasingly out-numbered and have been beaten by the Taliban time and again in the area.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would like to politely remind Brig. Gen. Charles Cleveland that one of the classic definitions of insanity is doing the same thing in precisely the same way, over and over, yet expecting a different outcome.

How long have the US and NATO been in Afghanistan?!?

15 years.

How much has been spent by the US government on this war?!?

There are no real figures on this, but most probably into the billions, if not trillions of dollars.

Is there any military metric by which the US and NATO can claim "victory" in this war?!?

NONE!!

So, let me get this straight; the US military and NATO have been in Afghanistan for 15 years, spending billions, if not trillions, of dollars on a war that the US and NATO have not been able to win?

What's wrong with this picture?!?

EVERYTHING.

And I have a modest proposal to float by President Obama; please send our troops, and NATO troops home as quickly as is safe for them, and I would remind our President that Afghanistan isn't called "the graveyard of empires" for no reason.

Let's cut our losses now, and negotiate with whatever government is left standing in Kabul for the pipeline routes, the minerals (and the heroin, which is flowing like water, ever since the US/NATO occupation happened).

Of course, this solution is logical, but I think, at this point, the US government needs to start embracing logic, rather than the "magical thinking" which has governed the US foreign policy in Afghanistan for all these 15 years.

Afghanistan Was 'Obama’s War': Trump’s Campaign

US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign has said the 2001 invasion and following occupation of Afghanistan was President Barack “Obama’s war.”

The United States — under GOP leader George W. Bush’s presidency — and its allies invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban regime from power, but after about one and a half decade, the foreign troops are still deployed to the country.

WITH LIBYA, US NOW HAS GROUND FORCES IN FOUR WARS

While it is impossible to know all the dirty deeds of America’s sprawling global empire, news that US ground forces are now fighting in Libya means that US troops are involved in at least four active wars:

Afghanistan: A planned draw-down of troops in 2015 was curtailed by President Obama to leave more troops for combat and advisory missions. This week, US forces were forced to abandon military equipment that then fell into the hands of ISIS.

Iraq: After a removal of major combat forces in 2011, Iraq has become a battleground once again. President Obama has sent roughly 4,600 troops in for combat and advisory roles and built a new base in northern Iraq called “Firebase Bell.”

Syria: Though the US had been supporting Syrian rebel groups, including jihadists, since 2013, US troops have entered the fighting in the country. In January of this year, US special forces took control of a military base in northern Syria.

The Danger of Excessive Trump Bashing

The widespread disdain for Donald Trump and the fear of what his presidency might mean have led to an abandonment of any sense of objectivity by many Trump opponents and, most notably, the mainstream U.S. news media. If Trump is for something, it must be bad and must be transformed into one more club to use for hobbling his candidacy.

Amid his incoherence and insults, Trump has raised valid points on several important questions, such as the risks involved in the voracious expansion of NATO up to Russia’s borders and the wisdom of demonizing Russia and its internally popular President Vladimir Putin.

Hillary’s Shariah Law Expert Khizir Khan Folds His Tent

Khizir Khan, the father of the celebrated dead Muslim soldier, has much to hide from the American electorate, judging from the fact that the website of KM Khan, immigration attorney and Shariah law scholar, has been pulled from the Internet. He’s packed his tent to ride off into the sunset on a camel.

Hook, line and sinker, the mainstream news is dangling like a sucker fish chummed by that Shariah-espousing shyster for the Saudi lobby, namely Khizir Khan, Esq. The shameless press corps simply repeated his partisan diatribe at the Democratic party convention at face value without fact-checking or even the slightest pretense of balance. Nor was the circumstances of his soldier son's death put in the context of an illegal war in Iraq and subsequent jihadist upsurge. Children Detained as National Security Threats

During US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, US forces apprehended and detained thousands of boys suspected of participating in armed activities. In Iraq alone, the US confirmed that between 2003 and 2008, it detained at least 2,400 children. According to the US, these children were captured engaging in anti-coalition activity, such as planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs), operating as lookouts for insurgents, or actively fighting against US or coalition forces.[80]

After the 9/11 attacks, the US military took into custody at least 15 children and brought them to the Guantanamo Bay detention facility where they were detained for periods ranging from a few months to 10 years.[81] Several of the child detainees alleged torture, including threats of rape, sleep deprivation, and shackling in painful positions, before and after being sent to Guantanamo.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The torture of anyone is, in my book, an unforgivable sin; but the torture of children is morally reprehensible in ways I cannot even begin to articulate.

But I think it is very important, as we look at the US-generated wars grinding on in so many places on this planet, seemingly without end, to look very clearly at what has - and potentially will - be done with our tax dollars, and in our name.

If torture - and specifically, the torture of children- becomes "normalized" by the US government, what does that say about us as a culture, and a country?!?

The first, very frank thoughts which come to mind are that we have become a sick, violent, throwaway, and sadistic culture, where the alleged ends always justify the means.

And what happens when the soldiers who have been ordered to torture kids go home to their own families and their own children?!?

I cannot believe that the outcome could possibly be good here.

America's Longest War Gets Longer

One thing that that amazed me was the Convention’s lack of attention to America’s longest ever war that still rages in the mountains of Afghanistan. For the past thirteen years, America, the world’s greatest military and economic power, has been trying to crush the life out of Afghan Pashtun mountain tribesmen whose primary sin is fiercely opposing occupation by the US and its local Afghan opium-growing stooges.

The saintly President Barack Obama repeatedly proclaimed the Afghan War over and staged phony troops withdrawals. He must have believed his generals who kept claiming they had just about defeated the resistance alliance, known as Taliban.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is a reason why Afghanistan is characterized as "The Graveyard of Empires."

What would be logical for the US government to do is withdraw all of its and its coalition forces as quickly as it would be safe, then negotiate with whatever leadership was still standing over the pipeline routes.

Of course, THAT...would be logical.

And logic, and the US government, have really been on the outs for a really long, long time.

And believe me, this is not logic's fault!!

And BTW, long before the US invaded Afghanistan on the trumped up charge that they were complicit in 9/11, the Bush administration was negotiating with the Taliban, and threatened military action if the price was too high.

US threatened Afghanistan government with military action, if their leadership's cost on oil pipelines was too high

The article goes on to state:

"US Plans Invasion of Afghanistan July 21, 2001: US officials (Simons, Inderfurth and Coldren) meet with Pakistani and Russian intelligence officers in Berlin. [Salon, 8/16/02] Taliban representatives boycotted this meeting due to worsening tensions. Pakistani ISI relays information to the Taliban. [Guardian, 9/22/01] At the meeting, former US State Department official Lee Coldren passes on a message from Bush officials. He later says, "I think there was some discussion of the fact that the United States was so disgusted with the Taliban that they might be considering some military action." [Guardian, 9/26/01]

Accounts vary, but former Pakistani Foreign Secretary Niaz Naik later says he is told by senior American officials at the meeting that military action to overthrow the Taliban in Afghanistan is planned to "take place before the snows started falling in Afghanistan, by the middle of October 2001 at the latest." The goal is to kill or capture both bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar, topple the Taliban regime and install a transitional government of moderate Afghans in its place. Uzbekistan and Russia would also participate. Naik also says "it was doubtful that Washington would drop its plan even if bin Laden were to be surrendered immediately by the Taliban." [BBC, 9/18/01]

US Threatens Afghanistan with Carpet Bombs One specific threat made at this meeting is that the Taliban can choose between "carpets of bombs" - an invasion - or "carpets of gold" - the pipeline. [Bin Laden: The Forbidden Truth, Guillaume Dasquié and Jean-Charles Brisard, released 11/11/01]

Niaz Naik says Tom Simons made the "carpets" statement. [Salon, 8/16/02] According to the Washington Post, the Special Envoy of Mullah Omar, Rahmatullah Hashami, came to Washington bearing a gift carpet for President Bush from the one-eyed Taliban leader.

Taliban Offers Osama, US Refuses The Taliban offered the Bush administration to hold on to bin Laden long enough for the United States to capture or kill him but, inexplicably, the administration refused. [Village Voice}

That last statement was not "inexplicable"; Bin Laden was a US covert operative, and the Bin Laden and Bush families had been business partners with a string of ventures, both successful, and unsuccessful.

Chechen leader places responsibility for instability in Afghanistan on US and NATO

"Over the 37 years of warfare in Afghanistan, peace has become not a single step closer. Using the fight against its own bin Laden as a disguise, the United States has unleashed a civil war for decades to come. America and NATO could have solved the Afghan problem in just two years. But they need the eternal Afghan bloody pot claiming the lives of thousands of young Moslems," Kadyrov wrote on his Instagram account commenting on the July 23 terrorist attack in the Afghan capital city Kabul. According to the Chechen leader, the United States and NATO have deliberately destabilized the situation in that country and are maintaining this instability. "Step by step, they have been unleashing new wars in Moslem countries. Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Yemen have been thrown to the verge of losing sovereignty," he wrote. He called on the Afghan leaders to "drop personal and ethnics interests and strivings after power and to get united.

AT LEAST 61 KILLED AFTER SUICIDE BOMBING ATTACK IN KABUL CLAIMED BY ISIS

At least 61 people were killed and 207 injured when a huge blast rocked a mass demonstration by members of the mainly Shia Hazara minority in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday. The attack was claimed by terrorist group Islamic State: "Two fighters from Islamic State detonated explosive belts at a gathering of Shiites in the city of Kabul in Afghanistan," said a brief statement on the group's Amaq news agency.

A freelance journalist working for BBC Afghan said blood and body parts were everywhere, with debris strewn around.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are multiple, powerful reasons why Afghanistan has earned the title "the graveyard of empires."

The only guy who was able to hold on to it was Alexander the Great, and even through a series of elaborate alliances and marriages, that was only for 3 years.

Almost 15 years in to this US/NATO occupation, there is absolutely no military metric by which one could possibly judge this occupation as having created a "military victory."

The Afghani people are no more "pacified" than they were the day they got invaded; there is no true democracy, and neither the US nor NATO can protect the people from either the Taliban or ISIS.

The only non-brain-dead option the US government and NATO have right now, would to be to evacuate their soldiers and hired mercs as safely as is possible, and leave the country.

Then, negotiate with whatever government is left standing for the pipeline and mineral rights.

Of course, that...would be logical.

Americans fed up with the bullshit they've been fed for many years. They want the truth.

His intent is to relook at the way we are organized globally, where the US is sort of expected to be a global leader, but relook at these alliances and these charters that we are under to make sure that they are still viable for the 21st century. It doesn’t mean that President Trump comes into office and NATO goes away. But I would say that NATO as a political alliance does need to be relooked at in terms of everything — resourcing, capabilities.

US to base hundreds of troops outside Afghanistan

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said Tuesday that "some hundreds" of U.S. forces — in addition to the 8,400 that President Barack Obama announced would stay in the country last week — will be based outside Afghanistan, but will be ready to quickly deploy into the warzone if needed.

The decision to place troops outside the country raises questions about the actual reduction in troop totals, since any number of the hundreds could be moved quickly in and out of the country on any given day.

Army Gen. John Nicholson told reporters that about 400 of the forces deployed outside Afghanistan will be part of the U.S. commitment to the NATO advise-and-assist mission.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Defense Secretary: Expanded US Powers in Afghanistan Allow Action Against Taliban

During a surprise visit to Afghanistan today, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter touted the massive expansion of the rule of engagement for US forces in the country, saying they will allow for “more efficient” support of the Afghan government in fighting the Taliban.

The previous rules, which nominally marked the end of the Afghan War, restricted active US operations in Afghanistan, but mounting losses to the Taliban has left the insurgency with more land than any time since the 2001 US invasion, leading to the escalation.

New US commander in Afghanistan Gen. Nicholson confirmed Carter’s comments, and said the new authority was used far more often than the Pentagon had previously admitted, insisting that troops used the authority “almost daily.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

This absolute, epic fail of a war has gone on for nearly 15 years, as it began on 7 October, 2001.

And after nearly 15 years into this conflict, the US and NATO are no closer to any military metric which could possibly be assessed as "winning" this war than the day the US started it.

The logical thing would be to go home, and negotiate with whatever government winds up in place after the Americans and NATO service members leave, for the oil pipelines.

But, because it is logical, such a thought is not at all entertained by this country's political or military elite.

Unfortunately, the pathological, collective inability to think something through to its logical conclusion seems to be a prerequisite for working for the US government these days.

Hillary Clinton has pursued the presidency for almost a decade with a tenacious determination. She almost achieved the nomination in 2008 only to lose to Barack Obama. That led to an eight-year stifling of this ambition.

Finally, in the long run-up to the 2016 election, she was convinced the nomination was hers.

Jeremy Corbyn gives #Chilcot statement

The much-edited Chilcot Report finally arrived and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has issued a pretty-sounding apology for his party’s decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003. He called it the most serious foreign policy calamity of the last 60 years and “a stain on our party and country”.

It’s unfortunate that he dignifies the evil Iraq war conspiracy by suggesting it had anything to do with policy of the British people. It was a private venture, pledged in secret, by a Labour prime minister and his closest henchmen, and backed by the Cabinet.

Iraq Verdict: Trouble if heads don’t roll

First and foremost it was not so much a foreign policy disaster as a flat-out war crime for which Blair as chief perpetrator must be tried. And so must his Cabinet, who carry collective responsibility.

There will be mega-trouble if heads don’t roll.

Trump Hammers On Brexit, “Independence Day” And Repudiation Of Rule By The Global Elite

One thing is clear, whether or not everyone will agree with what is said, Trump is at least speaking more directly than most politicians do

It turned out that Trump wasted no time in making sure that the people of America understood that what had been done in the UK can be done in the United States.

Globalists and Neocons Prove Incapable of Understanding Reality

If Trump wants to put America first, he needs to start firing the Neoconservatives and their lackeys from the White House and putting them on trial for making Americans look really bad.

Rather than listening and learning and modifying their actions, the ruling elites stick to “more of the same.” This process clearly emblematized by the endless procession of Bushes and Clintons replacing each other in the positions of power.

Trump better choice by far – Alan Sabrosky

An exclusive interview with Dr. Alan Sabrosky

Q. Does a US-inspired NATO-generated Cold War climate already exist?

A. Not yet, but it is heading that way. Watch for it to intensify under Clinton, and to ameliorate under Trump.

Corbyn: Clowns to the left of him, jokers to the right

Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right, here I am...

A political beacon is about to be extinguished unless he breaks with the doomed Labour Party and sets up on his own

Well I don’t know why I came here tonight
I got the feeling that something ain’t right,
I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you.
Yes I’m stuck in the middle with you,
And I’m wondering what it is I should do,
It’s so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I’m all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right…

Victory Is Possible – Israel Shamir

Brexit is a game-changing event. Now Euro-sceptics all over Europe has got fresh wind in their sails.

Few people expected the positive outcome of Brexit referendum. Among other doubters, I expected the UK government will borrow a trick from the Clinton collection, and proclaim the "Bremain" hath it.

The political establishment of both leading parties, the Tories and Labour, wished to remain in the cosy lap of the EC. This was the will of the Bank of England, and of the City of London; of the powerful media lords, of the creative minority of yuppies, of cosmopolitan intellectuals.

Brexit: Leaveniks have it. What next?

Britain’s exit from EU deals a body blow to the US’ trans-Atlantic leadership.

The unthinkable has happened with the United Kingdom voting to leave the European Union. (BBC)

Arguably, this is potentially the most serious development in world politics since the collapse of the Soviet Union. (Curiously, both catastrophes happened ‘voluntarily’.)

U.S. to give Afghan forces $3 billion a year from 2018-2020: official

The United States plans to provide more than $3 billion a year in support for the Afghan national security forces from 2018 through 2020, U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a think tank, Olson also said the United States planned to ask Congress for about $1 billion a year in development and economic assistance for Afghanistan from 2018 through 2020.

Trump as the ‘Relative Peace Candidate’

The danger to the rest of us is not Trump, but Hillary Clinton. She is no maverick. She embodies the resilience and violence of a system whose vaunted ‘exceptionalism’ is totalitarian with an occasional liberal face.”

Hillary Clinton has shown no real remorse over her support for neocon “regime changes,” aggressive wars and belligerence toward Russia, leaving the oft-obnoxious Donald Trump as the relative peace candidate, says John V. Walsh.

Let us hear from these heretics, among them William Greider, Glen Ford, John Pilger, Jean Bricmont, Stephen F. Cohen and William Blum. Their words are not to be construed as “endorsements,” but rather an acknowledgement of Trump’s anti-interventionist views, the impact those views are having and the alternative he poses to Hillary Clinton in the current electoral contest.

Call for a National Debate on U.S. “Regime Change” Policy

We are a group of concerned U.S. citizens currently visiting Russia with the goal of increasing understanding and reducing international tension and conflict. We are appalled by this call for direct U.S. aggression against Syria, and believe it points to the urgent need for open public debate on U.S. foreign policy.

Taliban Holds More of Afghanistan Now Than Any Time Since 2001

The installation of Lt. Gen. John Nicholson Jr. as the 17th commander of nearly 15 years of US-led occupation in Afghanistan provided yet another occasion for the US to take stock, this time with an eye on Nicholson’s proposals to loosen the rules of engagement for US combat troops.

That meant another accounting of just how badly the war is going, and it’s bad. After ousting the Taliban, which was Afghanistan’s government before the 2001 invasion, they’ve been slowly but surely losing ground back to them, and the Taliban now controls more territory than any time since the war began.

That reflects both the steady erosion of Afghan government territory in the south, and more rapid Taliban gains in both Helmand Province and around the city of Kunduz. The Taliban has intermittently taken Kunduz itself, a northern city which was largely rebel-controlled before the war.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Absoflippinglutely unbelievable!!

This is an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions, and there is utterly no military metric by which the US/NATO occupation could ever be characterised as a "success".

The bottom line here is: the situation is worse than when the invasion began in 2001, and for all the blood and money spent, only to achieve an absolute failure in Afghanistan, after 15 years, is staggering and pretty damned near incomprehensible.

IF President Obama is looking at having any sense of a "legacy" from his Presidency, he would be wise to pull the US out of Afghanistan as quickly as would be safe for our troops.

Of course, wisdom, and the current, and previous administrations, didn't have much of an on-going relationship, unfortunately...

Orlando Killer’s Father “Knew Obama”? Schmoozed in Washington, Sought Afghan Presidency

The weird world of black ops intel... Omar Mateen's father met with Congressman and State Dept. officials involved with Afghanistan and sought backing for the presidency.

Has the killer's father ever met with Obama, Hillary or John Kerry? Because he knows Reps. Dana Rohrbacher, Charlie Rangel and Ed Royce.

Infiltration? Espionage? CIA assets? False flag media shootings and more... what the hell really happened indeed.

PLANS FOR AFGHAN WAR QUIETLY EXTENDED THROUGH 2020: WILL COST $5 BILLION PER YEAR

The war in Afghanistan — America’s longest conflict — will grind on for at least another four years as NATO allies are prepared to commit $5 billion through 2020 to train, equip and pay Afghan security forces, according to a senior NATO diplomat. Last week, President Obama granted U.S. troops in Afghanistan expanded authority to attack Taliban insurgents. The new rules allow U.S. forces to advise regular Afghan combat units and to call in airstrikes. There are about 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and Obama has pledged to reduce their number to 5,500 by year’s end.

As It Shapes ISIS-Centric Narrative, Orlando Police Reject Freedom of Information Request for Audio of Nightclub Shooter’s 911 Call

Hours after Omar Mateen opened fire in the LGBTQ Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, the Orlando Police Department informed the media that Mateen had sworn allegiance to ISIS in a call to its 911 emergency line.

According to FBI officials, Mateen previously pledged simultaneous allegiance to Al Qaeda and Hezbollah, two militant groups fighting on opposite sides of the Syrian civil war, and whose members have battled ISIS at various intervals.

On June 13, AlterNet’s Grayzone Project submitted a request under Florida’s public records law for a written transcript and/or an audio recording of any and all phone calls that Mateen made to Orlando’s 911 emergency line on the date of the Pulse Nightclub mass killing.

Christopher Bollyn: What is the U.S. Goal in Afghanistan?

Edwards gives the CIA the benefit of the doubt in concluding that the U.S. agency lost Afghanistan due to hubris and incompetence. The historical record, however, suggests that the CIA rejected the Haq plan because the agency’s real aim, at the highest level, was not to eradicate Islamic terrorist groups, but to foment and support them in order to create an Islamic enemy, the opposition against whom the next war, the War on Terror, would be fought.

World View: In a Reversal, Obama Allows U.S. Troops in Afghanistan in Combat Roles

In a significant reversal of policy, President Barack Obama’s administration will now all American soldiers to fight alongside Afghan troops in combat situations, and will allow close air support in combat. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter confirmed the change in policy, and said,

This is using the forces we have… in a better way, basically, as we go through this fighting season, rather than being simply reactive. This makes good sense. It’s a good use of the combat power that we have there.

By “fighting season,” Carter is referring to the fact that the Taliban are most active during the summer months.

The change in policy comes one day after John Sopko, appointed by Obama as Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), said that the situation in Afghanistan is continuing to deteriorate:

Webmaster's Commentary:

Folks, President Obama has just made one thing painfully clear: we are never leaving Afghanistan!!

Too many corporations, particularly those which are a part of the military industrial complex are making a killing (frequently, in the literal sense) from this war; the cheap heroin is flowing from Afghanistan poppies, to be used for off the shelf US covert operations; and neither the US military or government can ever admit it has made an horrific mistake with the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.
