Panic on Mass Common Core Test Refusals, Threaten Reprisals

Public resistance to Common Core is exploding across America, and officials are not happy about it. The Obama administration’s Department of Education, along with pro-Common Core government officials across the country under pressure from the feds, appear to be in panic mode. Facing a growing nationwide “opt out” movement to refuse participation in the unconstitutional federally funded testing regime aligned with the Obama-backed national school standards, senior bureaucrats, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, have actually started resorting to lawless threats against parents, teachers, students, and entire state governments. Some parents were threatened by officials with jail time. Even small children are being punished by the state for “opting out” of the deeply controversial tests, with one California mother telling The New American that her daughter was publicly denied ice cream in retaliation.

But so far, the threats are only emboldening the opposition.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have known teachers hired by a private education organisation to implement Common Core here in Hawaii: it was an unmitigated disaster; prevented the kids from truly learning; discouraged critical thinking; and made the child feel like little more than a herd animal.

One of the outcomes I would love to see happen from this growing federalization of education is a massive movement toward home schooling, either individual or group, and supported by states which are truly education friendly.

Kentucky ‘free range’ family loses custody of 10 kids over apparent ‘unschooling’

entucky “off-grid” family had their 10 children seized this week by authorities, and their supporters say they were targeted “simply because the government disagrees with their lifestyle and their educational choices.”

An anonymous tip sent sheriff’s deputies Wednesday to the 26-acre rural Breckenridge County home of Joe and Nicole Naugler, who document their “back to basics” lifestyle on social media.

They believe the complaint was lodged by an acquaintance who threatened to report the family to Child Protective Services during a Facebook feud with Joe Naugler.

The father was away with eight of the couple’s children when deputies arrived, and Nicole Naugler – who is five months pregnant – tried to drive away with the couple’s two oldest sons, according to a fundraising page set up by the family.

Investigators attempted to question the teens away from their mother, and she was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest when deputies said she interfered.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would almost be willing to bet that these kids spoke better, were better at critical thinking, and understanding math and science than most of their contemporaries in public school.

Some spelling bees across the country have banned home schooled kids because they do so much better than do their public school educated counterparts.

But when your children can be taken away from you simply because you educate differently, you no longer can be part of a free society or country.

Secrecy Over TPP Fuels Growing Opposition in Congress

The back-room push for the corporate-friendly Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact may be backfiring on its supporters, as more and more lawmakers in U.S. Congress drop their interest in the deal over its extreme secrecy.

Only members of the House and Senate are currently allowed to view the text of the deal, and even they are forbidden from discussing what it contains. As a new report from Politico published Monday details, "If you’re a member who wants to read the text, you’ve got to go to a room in the basement of the Capitol Visitor Center and be handed it one section at a time, watched over as you read, and forced to hand over any notes you make before leaving."

'We Refuse to be Pawns': Student Debt Strikers Slam Education Department

A group of student debt strikers will boycott a meeting scheduled for Monday with U.S. Education Department (DOE) officials, declaring: "We refuse to be the pawns of a Department that seeks to use the students' campaign to give cover to their ongoing failures."

Activists with the Debt Collective—which has helped organize a group of over 100 students from the now-shuttered Corinthian network of for-profit colleges who are refusing to pay back their loans in protest of predatory and fraudulent practices—last met with DOE officials on March 31. The group was scheduled to return to Washington, D.C. on May 4 to meet with Education Secretary Arne Duncan to hear his response to students' demands for blanket debt cancellation.

California Dreaming: Police have no obligation to protect any individual from harm

"Do you believe that law enforcement officers have a duty to protect you from harm?" Ask yourself that question, and, your answer is..?
That is a question I have frequently asked. The overwhelming majority of answers have been affirmative; ranging from "Yes." to "That's what they are paid to do!" The next logical question is "How can we be certain we know the correct answer?"
The correct answer is found in appellate court decisions. The following summaries of a few appellate court decisions will provide some insight into this area of the law. These example cases are from California - but understand that the police are not responsible for your individual safety in any state.

The ZBT Media Blackout - Jewish Fraternity Members Spits on Military Veterans - Blackout Ensues

When one thinks of fraternities, the usual associations are all wrong from the viewpoint of the left. This is presumably why the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at the University of Virginia was targeted by Sabrina Rubin Erdely. After all, she described UVA students as “throngs of toned, tanned, and overwhelmingly blond students” — doubtless incipient Nazis in Erdely’s overactive ethnic imagination.

So it’s quite odd to find a fraternity that does things like spitting on wounded U.S. military veterans and throwing beer bottles at them. Or tearing American flags off cars of military veterans and urinating on them.

Public School “Child Nutrition Supervisor” Served Students Reeking, Six-Year-Old Pork

(Nutritional Anarchy) Stories continually coming out of public schools illustrate time and again that our school lunches are “bad,” but this story makes Michelle Obama’s school lunch program look like a fancy dinner at a four-star restaurant.

After a determination made by someone given the title “Child Nutrition Supervisor” and the school’s cafeteria managers who performed “tests,” a decision was made to serve school children six-year-old pork in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

First of all… if you have to perform tests before you serve something obviously questionable enough to warrant tests to hundreds of trusting, innocent children…

Here’s an actual quote about the meat from local news outlet WBIR:

“The actual woman making a stink about it said it smelled so bad they made gravy to put over the meat to give it a smell and give it a better taste,” said [Hawkins County Commissioner Michael] Herrell.

Univ. of Illinois protected white supremacist, but not Steven Salaita, report finds

Salaita was fired last August as he was about to take up a tenured faculty position in the American Indian Studies program at the Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus, because of tweets criticizing Israel’s attack on Gaza that administrators deemed lacked “civility.”

By doing so, the university violated the AAUP’s long-standing and highly influential principles on academic freedom and tenure, the report concludes.

The AAUP report confirms – based on precedents dating back to 1962 as well as generally accepted practices applied to the facts of this case – that the university’s decision constituted a “dismissal” of Salaita and not a mere withdrawal of a job offer.

Salaita was therefore entitled to full protections of his academic freedom and to due process, all of which the university violated.

Last summer, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida asked the U.S. Department of Education to "demonstrate leniency" toward Corinthian Colleges by permitting the wealthy for-profit company to continue accessing millions of dollars in federal financial aid while it was cooperating with a federal investigation.

Ten months later, the company shuttered its remaining 28 campuses, instantly displacing some 16,000 students just days after it was fined $30 million by the Department of Education for a scheme involving "confirmed cases of misrepresentation of job placement rates" for as many as 947 students. The decision to close shop came after years of federal and state investigations into the company.

EDITORIAL: State should also shoulder blame for school testing meltdown

The Department of Education’s attempt to administer federally mandated assessments under new Common Core standards, which involved shifting all testing to computers, imploded last week when the Clark County School District halted the examinations because of constant system crashes. The online platform, administered by New Hampshire-based Measured Progress and UCLA’s Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, never worked properly for very long. Students couldn’t enter answers, saw questions placed out of order and dealt with mid-exam interruptions. By the time the Clark County School District gave up, many students couldn’t log into the testing server.

Just 42 percent of the residents in Freddie Gray’s neighborhood are employed

Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man who died in police custody, was born into Sandtown’s literally toxic ghetto, according to a lawsuit he and his two sisters filed in 2008. The Sun’s Jean Marbella writes that the family claimed damaging lead levels in their blood as children led to “multiple educational, behavioral and medical problems.” They settled in 2010 for an undisclosed sum.

Whether because of lead or even more intractable structural problems, Sandtown has been unable to shake the kinds of economic woes prevalent in other predominantly African-American inner city neighborhoods.

Here are the terrifying facts about Sandtown, according to U.S. Census tract data.

— Just 42 percent of residents are employed, compared to the national average of 59 percent.

— Thirty-three percent of residential properties are vacant or abandoned.

— Just 54 percent of its residents are even in the labor force, even though 77 percent of residents are between 20 and 64 years old.

Teaching profession headed for crisis as numbers continue to drop and working lives become 'unbearable'

The working lives of teachers have become “unbearable” because of constant monitoring and as a result they are quitting in such numbers that the profession is heading for a crisis, according to an open letter to The Independent signed by 1,200 teachers.

The letter calls for more support and warns that politicians have made teachers’ working lives “increasingly difficult and for many, unbearable” and that “a constant fear of being judged to be failing” was “bleeding the profession dry”.

Teachers who signed the letter, organised by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) union, warn that schools are heading for a teacher supply crisis as more teachers leave and the Government fails to recruit enough new trainees.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One major headache for finding new teachers is the added paperwork required. Last year I was contacted by the University of Hawaii to substitute teach a class for three days while the professor went on an expected maternity leave. As I had previously taught that exact same class, I said I would be willing to pitch in for those three days to help out. I then received a huge stack of forms in the mail from dozens of agencies and departments to fill out, including proof of citizenship (as illegals pour over the borders), verification of social security number, renewal of my TB test, and documentation of my qualifications to teach the subject. Apparently, new requirements from the government rendered the fact that I had been previously hired to teach that class and my industry reputation irrelevant, and I was faced with roughly a weeks' worth of filling out forms and visiting state and fed offices for a total of three hours' paid work! Clearly the feather-bedded bureaucrats are making more money off of education than the teachers do! At that point I told UH they should find someone else. But the fact is that I am a good teacher. I was well liked when I was at UH and many of my students found work in the industry after graduation. But I won't be teaching any more, not because I don't like teaching or that I am bad at it, but because trying to be a teacher has become too much of a hassle in these politically correct times.

Parents anger after children as young as THREE told to sign contract promising not to use 'transphobic language' at nursery

Children as young as three are being asked to sign a contract pledging not to use transphobic language at school.

The pledge is contained in a ‘home-school agreement’ which all children must sign before they start at Turnham Primary School in September.

The infants must also promise to refrain from using homophobic and racist phrases and to be tolerant of people with different sexual orientations and lifestyles. Each child must print their name and provide a signature to confirm that they understand their ‘responsibilities’ while attending the school.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I personally do not have a problem with anyone's orientation, but this idea of a contract is rooted in the theory that the state should decide a person's personal beliefs, and THAT I have a real problem with.

For one thing, the entire liberal theory that human thought can be reshaped by reshaping the environment derives entirely from Marget Mead's "Coming of Age in Samoa", which supported the theory that human minds were born totally blank, a "Tabla Rasa" and all human emotion and behavior was shaped by the environment. Of course, anyone that knows Polynesian and Samoan culture knows Mead's book is junk. Mead did not go to Samoa to find out the reality but to confirm a pre-designated conclusion and simply found those people who would tell her what she wanted to hear (not unlike the behavior of the supporters of human-caused global warming). Although discredited, Mead's book still forms the foundation of the liberal philosophy and Mead herself continues to be lionized by liberals, much as Al Gore continues to be deified by the Carbonazis.

Chinese school likened to 'cell block' after pupils jump to their deaths

A middle school in northern China has been likened to prison block after bars were installed on windows and balconies to deter pupils from jumping to their deaths, according to a newspaper report.

The security measures have been taken at Hengshui No. 2 Middle School in Hebei province and were prompted after two pupils killed themselves jumping, apparently due to the pressure they felt to succeed academically, the Beijing Times reported.

Campus Administrators Invoke ‘Civility’ to Silence Critical Speech

University administrators are successfully rallying around the value of “civility” in discourse as a means of silencing and getting rid of professors deemed politically troublesome.

That’s not really a fish filet with a whole wheat bun resting on top.

Nah, your eyes are playing tricks on you.

That’s what administrators at Virginia’s Portsmouth Public Schools want parents to believe after a mother took a photo of her child’s paltry school lunch and posted it on social media.

The mom says James Hurst Elementary served the lunch Tuesday.

After the photo began circulating around the community, Food Service Coordinator Jim Gehlhoff admitted the lunch “concerns us,” but added that it might not actually be as bad as it looks.

portsmouth-lunch“Poor lighting and food presentation make this lunch unappealing,” he said in a statement released to the media.

FAA investigating Florida mailman's landing of gyrocopter on U.S. Capitol lawn

From the mailman himself. Watch the vid.

UPDATE 2:45 p.m.: ST. PETERSBURG — Doug Hughes' close friend and co-worker, Mike Shanahan, said today that the Ruskin mailman is not a terrorist and did not mean any harm with his protest.

And just hours before Hughes landed in Washington, Hughes' friend said he called a Secret Service agent to notify him of the possibility of the gyrocopter flight.

"He's not a suicide bomber, he's a patriot," said Shanahan, 65, of Apollo Beach. The whole stunt centers around Hughes' effort to change campaign finance laws, "or the lack thereof," according to Shanahan.

How Zionists Are Destroying Free Speech In Universities

An academic conference, International Law and the State of Israel: Legitimacy, Responsibility and Exceptionalism, was due to start this Friday but the University of Southampton - citing spurious ‘health and safety’ concerns -cancelled it, following intense pressure from the pro-Israel lobby. Despite many academics writing to the university expressing their dismay and a petitionwhich garnered wide public support, an application at the High Court yesterday denied organisers a judicial review and the conference has now beenpostponed indefinitely. While an outrageous affront to freedom of speech, Southampton’s capitulation to external pressure is not hugely surprising. The Israel lobby has a long history of censorship, including in universities, which are no longer bastions of free speech.
