Even NATO is unwilling to touch Turkey’s Idlib mess with a ten-foot pole

Scott Ritter
is a former US Marine Corps intelligence officer. He served in the Soviet Union as an inspector implementing the INF Treaty, in General Schwarzkopf’s staff during the Gulf War, and from 1991-1998 as a UN weapons inspector. Follow him on Twitter @RealScottRitter

Having been hit by the Syrian Air Force in Idlib, Turkey has called on NATO’s protection, but as much as the alliance would like a fight with Assad and his ally Russia, it’s refused to back Ankara’s questionable adventure.
Turkey engaged NATO in Article 4 consultations, seeking help regarding the crisis in Syria. The meeting produced a statement from NATO condemning the actions of Russia and Syria and advocating for humanitarian assistance, but denying Turkey the assistance it sought.

A failed gamble

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is painfully obvious, that Erdogan did not due his "due dilligence" with NATO, of which Turkey is a member, to sound out potential support for this military misadventure, which is on track to be one of the most miserable epic fails in Turkey's contemporary history, before he decided to send in troops.

The next Turkish Parliamentary elections are scheduled in about 3 years from now. Turkish General Elections Scheduled for 2023.

IF Edrogan keeps writing geopolitical checks his military is unable to cash, this pathologically "bad behaviour" on his part may well sour the Turkish electorate on him; cause the voting public to go back to a Parliamentary system of elections; and find someone else who will care enough about the Turkish people and its military to not put them in harm's way like this.

And now, we have a related story, from rt.com, with the following headline:
Turkey & Syria on brink of WAR in Idlib: How did it come to this?

I am hoping (and praying) that Russia's collective general level head will continue to prevail, but it all depends on how hard Erdogan, and his military, are willing to push back here.

Erdogan has been very much behaving like the human version of a loose cannon, ever since the 2016 attempted coup in Turkey; I am seriously hoping that there has got to be a point, where he has to realize what harm he is bringing to both his people, and his military; but in looking at his current behaviour, relative to Syria, I am not so certain that we are going to see a change in the behaviour which brought Turkey into Syria in the first place.

Hundreds of Refugees Reportedly Move Towards European Borders Amid Escalation in Idlib

Ankara has linked a new refugee crisis with renewed hostilities in Syria’s Idlib Province, where the Syrian Army has been repelling militant attacks, some of which began under the cover of Turkish artillery fire, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

Hundreds of refugees coming from Syria, Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq are currently moving towards Turkey’s borders with Europe following reports that Ankara will no longer prevent migrants from crossing them, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported. According to the media outlet, these refugees have been moving in large groups on foot and using vehicles via the cities of Istanbul, Edirne, Izmir, and Aydin.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF in fact these reports are true (and Sputnik is not known for pulling punches), the impact on an already immigrant over-saturated Europe, may well be devastating.

Protesters clash with police for a second day at site of planned migrant detention camp intended to hold 7,000 people on Lesbos

Riot police on the Greek island of Lesbos today fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters against the creation of a new detention centre for migrants as the latest outburst of unrest entered a second day.

The Athens government infuriated residents of five Aegean islands - all straddling a key route to Europe used by thousands of migrants - by announcing two weeks ago that it would expedite the construction of secured detention centres to replace open-access, severely overcrowded camps.

Locals residents - who are are concerned such an arrangement could become permanent - tried to approach a site earmarked for a new migrant centre and clashed with police on a road winding through a forest.

EU Officials Refuse To Implement Border Controls To Stop Coronavirus

Even as the coronavirus begins to spread around the continent, EU officials have steadfastly refuse to implement border controls, insisting that the sanctity of open borders is more important.

The number of confirmed cases in Italy has soared from 3 to 322 in the space of just five days, with 10 deaths, but authorities insist that the Schengen Area, which abolishes passport checks and border controls between 26 European states, must not be compromised.

Europe keeps Schengen zone open despite coronavirus

European countries have no plans to suspend the Schengen free travel zone despite the coronavirus outbreak in Italy, Brussels has said, as it cautioned against a “panic” response.

The EU’s health security committee was due to meet on Monday for talks on the Italian crisis as the European Commission announced a €232m package for the global fight against the disease’s spread.

An emergency assessment mission of the World Health Organization and the EU’s European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control is due to arrive in Italy, where 229 have tested positive for the virus and six people have died, on Tuesday as authorities there battle to contain the largest outbreak outside Asia.

“We need to take this situation extremely seriously — but we must not give in to panic and of course to disinformation,” Stella Kyriakides, EU health commissioner, told reporters in Brussels on Monday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Overt Trump Regime Support for Al-Qaeda Offshoots in Syria, ISIS-Daesh Et Al are Pentagon/CIA Proxies

Both right wings of the US war party support ISIS, Al-Qaeda, its offshoots, and likeminded terrorist groups in Syria and other countries where their fighters are deployed as Pentagon/CIA proxy troops.

Instead of explaining reality on the ground in US war theaters, establishment media blame nations victimized by its aggression for high crimes committed against them.

Syria is Exhibit A, US aggression ignored, government forces, greatly aided by Russian airpower, vilified for liberating cities, towns and villages from US-supported “jihadists” — what’s currently ongoing in Idlib province, the last stronghold in the country of these elements.

On Monday, Trump’s envoy for regime change in Syria James Jeffrey indirectly expressed support for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham — the al-Qaeda offshoot al-Nusra by another name.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Once you realize that this is all about fossil fuel; the control of it, and the selling of it only in American dollars, does the American position of utilizing terrorists to further their objectives in the region become crystal clear.

Unbelievable comparisons to symptoms 'showing' as a V-Irus compared vs what happens when one is hit with 60GHz waves, and it's impact on the uptake of oxygen via the hemoglobin. This specific frequency is absorbed by oxygen. 60GHz causes the rotation of the electrons around the oxygen molecule to spin, thus inhibiting the ability of hemoglobin to properly uptake these oxygen molecules. What would be the ultimate 'solution' to such a problem as this "V.I.Rus"?

Coronavirus Could Be on the Verge of Worldwide Breakout

Paul Craig Roberts

It is difficult to get reliable information about coronavirus. The information difficulty is further complicated by interest groups using the outbreak for their own agendas. For example, many both inside and outside China are using the spread of the virus to criticize the Chinese government. Others, both inside and outside China, claim the virus is a bioweapon unleashed on China by the US. Still others say the global elite has decided to implement a program to reduce the world population and that Bill Gates, one of the global elite, said some months ago that a global pandemic would break out at this time. Some Internet sites attract traffic by posting reports of massive numbers of Chinese deaths and crematoriums running 24/7. The official Chinese story has been that the virus originated in a market that sold wild animal meat. The fact remains that Wuhan, apparently a city larger than any in the US, has been locked down for a month.

Update (0910ET): The coronavirus is already forcing Iranians to tweak certain practices, including their daily greetings.

As we reported over the weekend, more than a dozen towns in Lombardy - the hardest hit region with 167 confirmed cases and 4 deaths - are on complete lockdown. According to the latest update, there are now 219 confirmed cases in Italy, as well as five deaths.

Angelo Borrelli, head of the country's civil protection agency, said Monday during a press briefing that another 91 people are currently in isolation inside their homes.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is a companion piece to this, dateline today, also from zerohedge.com, with the following title: 'What Coverup?': WHO Refuses To Acknowledge China's Early Censorship Of Outbreak

The article then goes on to state: "Update (0816ET): For the most part, the WHO briefing on its visit was everything we feared it would be: Nothing revelatory, just long, boring droning and lukewarm praise about China's response to the outbreak, without once mentioning any kind of coverup.

One reporter apparently felt empowered to challenge the Chinese censors and ask about the cover-up, to which the WHO responded: 'What coverup?' "

Northern Italy in Lock-down (around 10 towns)

The number of people in Italy infected with the new virus from China more than quadrupled Friday due to an emerging cluster of cases in the country's north that prompted officials to order schools, restaurants and businesses to close.

Many of the 14 new cases represented the first infections in Italy acquired through secondary contagion and brought the country's total to 17. The cluster was located in a handful of tiny towns around Lodi, in the Lombardy region, said the Lombardy regional health chief Giulio Gallera.

The first to fall ill was a 38-year-old Italian who met with someone who had returned from China on Jan. 21 without presenting any symptoms of the new virus, health authorities said. That person was being kept in isolation and appears to present antibodies to the virus.

Italy becomes Europe’s largest coronavirus hot spot with 2 deaths & 79 cases across 5 regions

The number of confirmed Covid-19 coronavirus cases has soared to at least 79 in Italy, forcing authorities to introduce increasingly strict containment and quarantine measures in the northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto.
A 78-year-old man died near Padua in the Veneto region on Friday night, becoming the second victim of the virus in Italy, after a 76-year-old woman was found dead on Thursday 50km south of Milan.

At least 17 people have been confirmed infected in Veneto so far, including the latest victim’s wife and daughter, as authorities are still mulling whether the Carnival of Venice events should be cancelled. In neighboring Lombardy, there are 54 cases, including one in Milan – a city with a population of 1.4 million, where Women’s Fashion Week is currently taking place.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Prayers for the families and friends of those affected; but again, China's scientists, and the world's scientists, need to work together, with complete transparency, to determine what the hell happened; develop and fast-track a vaccine; and figure out how to prevent such a slate-wiper from ever rearing its ugly head again.

As to whether this will happen, is anyone's guess; but logically, this is what should happen.

2/7/20 Danny Sjursen on America’s Coming Battle for Eurasia

Danny Sjursen is back for part two of his conversation with Scott about America’s foreign policy disasters, this time focusing on what Sjursen calls “the coming battle for Eurasia.” According to an old theory of geopolitics, the power that controls central Eurasia—that is, eastern Europe and parts of the Middle East, with all its natural resources and strategic position—will be the dominant global hegemon. Obviously, certain figures in the American government would like to be in that position. The problem, Sjursen points out, is that America is way too far away to have any business trying to do this, especially while countries like Russia and China might have an interest in trying to stop us. He says that based on his experience in the military, people seem to think the U.S. could wage a conventional war with tanks, infantry, and aircraft carriers against other world powers, without resorting to nuclear weapons.

EU Auto Registrations Plunge In Dismal Pre-Coronavirus January Numbers

For months we have been commenting about how the global auto market is mired in recession. Most recently, we have been highlighting how China, one of the world's largest economies and auto markets, has been exacerbating things with terrible sales numbers, failed subsidy ideas, disconnect from Beijing and, obviously, the coronavirus.

Many of the new numbers out of China, including a dismal January sales number and expectations for an awful February, are being blamed on the coronavirus (despite the fact that January's number doesn't really even include the virus impact yet).

Now, the numbers out of Europe - where they can't just turn around and place the blame on the coronavirus, are looking equally as awful and are sounding a much bigger alarm about the global automotive industry.

Europe’s Nuclear Weapons and the Arms Reduction Treaty

© Photo: Flickr / EU2018BG
It is intriguing but almost inevitable that examination of so many European policies must begin with reference to the United States. The reason is that the US is majestically (and the word is used advisedly) important to Europe, and no matter what opinions may be held of Washington’s policies under the erratic Trump, these will always have influence in Europe’s capitals.

One major Europe-US consideration is the Trump administration’s decisions on nuclear strategy which have an enormous impact that will be likely to shape international relations indefinitely.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As an American, I do not feel at all safter, in light of the Trump Administration's seeming to want to ignore this treaty completely, and Macron is absolutely correct to bring it up in this address.

European Union rejects Mark Zuckerberg's offer on regulating online content

The European Union (EU) has rejected Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's offer on online content regulation, saying the social networking platform must take responsibility for harmful, fake and illegal content.

On Monday, Zuckerberg had proposed reforms regarding the regulation of Facebook's online content with the slogan "charting a way forward: online content regulation".

After meeting the Facebook CEO in Brussels, EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton said the proposed Internet rules are insufficient and it was for Facebook to adapt and adherer to Europe's standards, not the other way round.

Also read: Facebook CEO Zuckerberg meets top EU officials ahead of proposals regulating AI

Breton who is tasked with overseeing the bloc's data strategy, said Facebook "was being slow in coming forward with ideas on how to remove illegal content and warning that the EU was preparing to act."

Webmaster's Commentary:

What concerns me deeply here, is the rush to censor allegedly "illegal content", without first actually defining it; this is a very slippery slope when it comes to outlawing certain language, which may anger us, or make us feel bad relative to what is being said.

But don't most humans have the "horse sense" to differentiate between what is merely offensive, and that which is just plain bad information on line?!?

Apparently, Neither Zuckerberg nor Breton believe that people do; now, I find that very offensive, myself!! :-)

In Munich, Zelensky calls for repair of European security, starting with Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on world leaders to repair the system of regional security in Europe by ending Russia’s war in the east of Ukraine and returning the Crimean peninsula from Russian occupation at the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 15.

“It’s not entirely correct to say ‘the war in Ukraine.’ This is the war in Europe. And along with the annexation of Crimea, it has lasted as long as World War II. Imagine that,” Zelensky said in a speech at the “Townhall on Ukraine” panel at the conference.

Emphasizing that a new security architecture should be based solely on the norms and principles of international law, Zelensky said that the current international treaties do not protect any nation from the rule of the strongest.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Looks as though Ukrainian President Zelensky, instead of "sipping the Koolaid" on Crimea, has decided "chug it", somewhat akin to what a drunken, pledging University frat member would do, in order to join a powerful fraternity.

Right now, tht "powerful fraternity" consists of the United States of America, which pathologically refuses to recognise that the Crimean people had a right to peaceful self-determination, as stated in the UN Charter of the Rights of Man, to which the United States is, ironically, a signatory.

So President Zelensky, since you seem to be suffering from a profoundly intense case of SMD (Selective Memory Disorder), let me disabuse you of the collective fantasies and utter untruths to which you have been clinging on this issue, and replace those fantasies with facts.

FACT: Washington Was Behind Ukraine Coup: Obama admits that US “Brokered a Deal” in Support of “Regime Change”;
US Sticks to Tried and True Policy of Supporting Coups

What happened was that the duly elected Ukrainian President, Yanukovich, was thrown under the proverbial bus, because he was considered "not pro-Western enough, and way too Russia-Centric" to fit the US's and Europe's "new World Order Profile; so exit Yanukovich, and in an election more crooked than is a dog's hind leg, Poroshenko was "anointed" as Ukraine's next President.

When this happened, the people of Crimea understood that there would be no rule of law in Kiev; so what did they do?!?

President Zelensky, you know this coming bit, but are terrified to actually acknowledge it, as it would compromise your utterly false position, that Russia "annexed" Crimea.

The Crimeans held a full and fair referendum, asking their people if they wanted to remain with Ukraine, post-putsch, or petition Russia to become a part of the Russian Federation.

And the result, President Selensky?!? You know that also.

In the Crimean Status Refgerndum, Crimeans voted overwhelmingly - at a total of nearly 97%, to petition the Russian Federation to become a member.

The Russian Federation responded, by accepting Crimea as a member.

Sir, I would like to strongly caution you, that a foreign policy based on lies and attempted deceit, is like attempting to build a house on sand; the foundation will not stand.

I would therefore politely suggest to your American handlers, that you and the US come up with a Ukrainian position on Crimean's Referendum which reflects the truth, and starts righting US/Russian relations over Crimea, and starts righting Ukrainian/Russian relations over Crimea; it is well past time, sir, that such reconciliation began.

Peace here can only begin... when responsibility for dealing the truth of history is accepted, rather than attempting to embrace a narrative which is horrifically false, and flies in the face of all known facts.

Sir, I sense that you are a very bright man, who truly, sincerely, wants the best for his country; so let's dispense with falsehoods which can only lead to more bitter conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which could result in a protracted, armed confrontation between these two countries.

I do not believe, for one moment, that this is where you want to go with the Crimea issue, even though the US government is most probably applying the maximum amount of pressure it dares, to get you to go along with their narrative on this issue, as another way to say "Gotcha!!" to Russia.

North Macedonia Is Being Used by NATO To Target Serbia & Russia

The North Macedonian House of Representatives this week unanimously approved for their country to accept the NATO Accession Protocol, taking the former Yugoslav Republic a step closer towards accession into NATO which is expected to be completed and finalized in the spring.

‘Change course before it's too late’: Lavrov calls on Europe to reject false notion of ‘Russian threat’ in Munich speech

NATO’s eastward expansion and large-scale drills near Russian borders may lead to unpredictable consequences and it's time for Europe to change course, Russia's FM Sergey Lavrov told the Munich Security Conference.

Europe is where the "crisis of confidence" in international relations is felt the most, Foreign Minister Lavrov said as he took to the stage, explaining that "the structure of the Cold War rivalry is being recreated" on the continent.

"Escalating tensions, NATO's military infrastructure advancing to the East, exercises of unprecedented scope near the Russian borders, the pumping of defense budgets beyond measure – all this generates unpredictability," he added.

He then called on Europe to focus on security cooperation and helping to uphold international treaties, instead of following a policy of confrontation.

KABOOM! SWITZERLAND HALTS 5G ROLLOUT OVER HEALTH CONCERNS

Switzerland, one of the world’s leaders in the rollout of 5G mobile technology, has placed an indefinite moratorium on the use of its new network because of health concerns.

The move comes as countries elsewhere around Europe race to upgrade their networks to 5G standards amid a furious rearguard diplomatic campaign by the US to stop them using Chinese technology provided by Huawei. Washington says the company, which is fundamental to most European networks’ upgrade plans, presents a grave security risk.

Beyond Ukraine: America's Coming (Losing) Battle For Eurasia

Authored by US Army Major Danny Sjursen (ret.) via AntiWar.com,

Academic historians reject anything smacking of inevitably. Instead they emphasize the contingency of events as manifested through the inherent agency of human beings and the countless decisions they make. On the merits, such scholars are basically correct. That said, there was something – if not inevitable – highly probable, almost (forgive me) deterministic about the two cataclysmic world wars of the 20th century. Both, in retrospect, were driven, in large part, by collective – particularly Western – nations’ adherence to a series of geopolitical philosophies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What bothers me about the US government, is its collective inability to think an issue through to its logical conclusion; and it doesn't seem to matter who is in power, Democrats or Republicans; this insanity is entrenched to the point of its being nearly pathological with the US government.

And that's when grave mistakes in geopolitical relationships can take place, leading to massive geopolitical tensions, and sometimes, horrific, senseless wars, in which this country has found itself enmeshed since 9/11

Do you realize that no 19 year old kid in this country has ever lived through a time when the US was not at war with something, or someone, far away, to affect regime change, and expropriate a foreign country's resources, to which the US has no moral right?!?

Please chew on that, intellectually, for a moment, please.

A NEW SPACE RACE? US, CHINA, RUSSIA, AND EUROPE ALL PLAN FOR MOON BASES

One year ago in January, a Chinese robot landed on the dark side of the moon. Since then, the Chang’e 4 probe and the Yutu-2 rover it carried onboard have been busy photographing and scanning minerals, growing yeast, hatching fruit-fly eggs, and cultivating cotton, potato, and rapeseeds in the moon’s low gravity, according to the Daily Beast.

Now, China’s National Space Administration is quietly planning to launch yet another probe into space. Chang’e 5 could blast off as early as this year.

Last year, TMU reported that the Yutu-2 rover came across a strange “gel-like” substance which the Chinese began to study extensively.

The Chinese space agency has continued to work on its Tiangong 3 space station and is planning on testing a new manned spacecraft for deep-space missions. That permanent station will reach orbit aboard the country’s new Long March 5B rocket in the first half of 2020, AFP reported. The mission will not be associated with the International Space Station.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The very clearly articulated desire of the US government to "weaponize space", concerns me deeply.

Space exploration should be a place in which all countries around the world should be cooperating, and not competing; humankind, as a species, is never better than when it works together to share information, and insights, to give us a better understanding of where we stand, in our little blue island of Light, relative to the rest of the universe.

Beyond Ukraine: America’s Coming (Losing) Battle for Eurasia

by Maj. Danny Sjursen, USA (ret.) Posted on February 06, 2020

Podcast – Episode #19 – Alistair Crooke and the Civilizational Wars of the U.S. and Europe

Alistair Crooke and I sit down for a wide-ranging chat on the loss of institutional legitimacy all across the West and the Middle East. Starting with Brexit and what it means for the U.K. and spanning the globe to include Europe, its relationship to Russia and the ideological wars being waged by various factions against Iran and China, this is an episode I don’t think anyone should miss.

I know that I am better served for having been a part of it. And, if in our own small way we can prevent further wars of this type, it will

FLASHBACK: The New Mediterranean Oil and Gas Bonanza

The discovery in late 2010 of the huge natural gas bonanza off Israel’s Mediterranean shores triggered other neighboring countries to look more closely at their own waters. The results revealed that the entire eastern Mediterranean is swimming in huge untapped oil and gas reserves. That discovery is having enormous political, geopolitical as well as economic consequences. It well may have potential military consequences too.

Preliminary exploration has confirmed similarly impressive reserves of gas and oil in the waters off Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and potentially, Syria.

As the UK prepares to formally leave the bloc's institutions at 11pm tonight, the French President mourned the 'sad day'.

He said Britain's historic divorce should send alarm bells ringing around Brussels, which he conceded had to evolve to stop more countries peeling away.
