Exclusive: Professor who downplayed oil spill has federal government contracts

Quoted in scores of news outlets, appearing on dozens of network news programs and even landing a guest spot on The Late Show with David Letterman, oil spill expert Ed Overton has been a ubiquitous presence in the media throughout the Gulf oil spill disaster.

Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science at Louisiana State University, Overton, who has been criticized for downplaying the effects of the worst offshore oil spill in history, has also headed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s chemical hazard assessment team for over 25 years.

Illness Plagues Gulf Residents in BP’s Aftermath

ORANGE BEACH, Alabama, Nov 15, 2010 (IPS) – Increasing numbers of U.S. Gulf Coast residents attribute ongoing sicknesses to BP’s oil disaster and use of toxic dispersants.

“Now I have a bruising rash all around my stomach,” Denise Rednour of Long Beach, Mississippi told IPS. “This looks like bleeding under the skin.”

Rednour lives near the coast and has been walking on the beach nearly every day since a BP oil rig exploded on Apr. 20. She has noticed a dramatically lower number of wildlife, and said that many days the smell of chemicals from what she believes are BP’s toxic dispersants fill the air.

Yet her primary concern is that she and many people she knows in the area have gotten sick.

Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science at Louisiana State University, Overton, who has been criticized for downplaying the effects of the worst offshore oil spill in history, has also headed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s chemical hazard assessment team for over 25 years.

Yet in nearly every media appearance, and even during congressional testimony, Overton, an environmental chemist, has omitted this long-term, high-level contracting position for the federal government through LSU, a Raw Story investigation has found.

"So....take this for what you will. A good friend of mine who works at a credit union here in town said an "employee" of cookies and cream walked in and cashed a $80K check for her claim against BP. New Evidence Links BP to Health Crisis in the Gulf

BP's stock has already bounced back. The media has mostly moved on. But the long-term health impacts on Gulf Coast residents from the catastrophic oil spill are only beginning.

Exhibit A, says chemist Wilma Subra of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network, is a recent evaluation she performed of blood sample analyses from eight BP cleanup workers and residents in Alabama and Florida.

Originally collected on four separate dates throughout August, all the blood samples -- from three females, age 44, 46 and 51, and five males, age 30, 46, 48, 51 and 59 -- contained dangerously high levels of volatile organic chemicals found in BP crude oil, including Ethylbenzene, m,p-Xylene and Hexane, Subra explained during a wide-ranging interview with Alternet.

BP blamed for toxification

James Miller, a commercial shrimper, lifelong fisherman in Mississippi and former BP oil response worker, is horribly sick.

"I've been vomiting, my head feels like it's going to explode, diarrhoea, and I keep passing out," Miller, who worked in BP's so-called Vessels of Opportunity (VOO) oil response programme, said from his bed at Biloxi Regional Hospital on November 5.

Four days earlier, Miller, his wife and dog were boating on the Gulf of Mexico near one of Mississippi's barrier islands when all three of them fell ill.

"My wife and I felt the chemicals immediately and my dog even started hacking like he was trying to cough up a bone," Miller explained.

Multiple independent lab tests confirm oil in Gulf shrimp

The federal government is going out of its way to assure the public that seafood pulled from recently reopened Gulf of Mexico waters is safe to consume, in spite of the largest accidental release of crude oil in America's history.

However, testing methodologies used by the government to deem areas of water safe for commercial fishing are woefully inadequate and permit high levels of toxic compounds to slip into the human food chain, according to a series of scientific and medical professionals interviewed by Raw Story.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Federal government's response to this disaster was to get it out of sight and out of mind before the elections, no matter what harm had been done to the people or the seafood here.

After all, BP was one of the most significant contributors to Obama's 08 campaign, and therefore had to be protected at all costs!

What makes this finding so extraordinary is that it came from a citizens’ initiative -TESTING THE WATERS – which was formed by Gulf Coast residents who simply want to know if their beaches are oil free, the water is clean enough to swim in, and the seafood is safe to eat.

Isn’t this what government is supposed to do? Test the water! They test it for everything else, and yet getting regular testing like this done seems to take an act of GOD.

BP Successfully Disposed of the Oil ... In the Gulf Food Chain

Recently declassified government documents have shed new light on the decades-old debate over the fluoridation of drinking water, and have added to a growing body of scientific evidence concerning the health effects of fluoride. Much of the original evidence about fluoride, which suggested it was safe for human consumption in low doses, was actually generated by “Manhattan Project” scientists in the 1940s. As it turns out, these officials were ordered by government powers to provide information that would be “useful in litigation” and that would obfuscate its improper handling and disposal. The once top-secret documents, say the authors, reveal that vast quantities of fluoride, one of the most toxic substances known, were required for the production of weapons-grade plutonium and uranium.

NOAA official asks EINnews to withdraw story concerning gulf seafood safety

A U.S. government spokesperson reacted sharply today to an EIN news story questioning the safety of gulf seafood, saying "the veracity of the federal government seafood safety protocol or results are not in question by any qualified scientist." EINNEWS said it stands by its story.

The official, Christine Patrick, the lead public affairs officer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, demanded that EINNEWS withdraw its story.

NOAA and the Federal Food and Drug Administration earlier this week issued a joint statement giving the "all clear" to the consumption of Gulf of Mexico seafood.

The agencies based their approval on what they said were tests on 1,735 tissue samples including more than half of those collected to reopen Gulf of Mexico federal waters.

Coral, Marine-Life Devastation Near BP Oil Spill Indicates Much Worse Long-Term Damage Than Feds Had Admitted

NEW ORLEANS — For the first time, federal scientists have found damage to deep sea coral and other marine life on the ocean floor several miles from the blown-out BP well – a strong indication that damage from the spill could be significantly greater than officials had previously acknowledged.

Nov 06 07:28

Dead Coral Found Near Site of Oil Spill

A survey of the seafloor near BP’s blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico has turned up dead and dying coral reefs that were probably damaged by the oil spill, scientists said Friday.

The coral sites lie seven miles southwest of the well, at a depth of about 4,500 feet, in an area where large plumes of dispersed oil were discovered drifting through the deep ocean last spring in the weeks after the spill.

The large areas of darkened coral and other damaged marine organisms were almost certainly dying from exposure to toxic substances, scientists said.

The corals were discovered on Tuesday by scientists aboard a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessel using a submersible robot equipped with cameras and sampling tools.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If the coral is dying here, how in the sam hill can the fish caught from this region possibly be safe to eat?!?

Remember, this is the same NOAA which was conducting "sniffing tests" to allegedly determine if seafood was safe, as reported on 13 July 2010, as follows:

http://www.seafood.nmfs.noaa.gov/LA_times.com_7.2010.pdf

"Each day, his team of seven sensory experts dip their noses
into large Pyrex bowls of snapper, tuna and other raw seafood
to test for even a whiff of the pungent oil gushing into the Gulf
of Mexico.

"We use specific terms for the aroma," said Downs, who
supervises the seafood smellers at the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's marine lab here. "Diesel oil.
Bunker oil. Asphalt. Rubber-band-like. Tar."
Each olfactory analyst has a super schnoz, able to smell oil
diluted to one part per million. That's 40 times more sensitive
than your average proboscis."

One has to wonder if a more truly scientific analysis would have shown, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the fish was fouled from both the oi, and the toxic dispersant BP used.

"The purpose of the test they developed is to make the public confident, not whether the seafood was safe or not.

Gulf still loaded with chemicals, but FDA says seafood safe to eat

Federal agencies tested for only one chemical component while ignoring all others

The FDA and NOAA recently made the shocking announcement because of results from federal tests that allegedly found "no detectable residue" of toxic chemicals in the majority of seafood tested. But fishery experts are questioning the legitimacy of the testing methods used, citing the fact that the tests only looked for one chemical component of the Corexit dispersant -- dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS) -- while ignoring the presence of numerous other toxic chemicals and chemical combinations like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), propanols, and 2-butoxyethanol, that are also highly toxic.

Halliburton failed critical test not done on cement before blowout

Halliburton Co. acknowledged that it skipped a critical test on the final formulation of cement used to seal BP's oil well before it blew out catastrophically in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company, which was BP's cementing contractor, came under increased scrutiny when investigators from the president's oil spill commission revealed Thursday that tests performed by the company before the deadly blowout showed the cement to be unstable.

Halliburton in a statement issued late Thursday night said it did not conduct a stability test on the final mix of cement after a last-minute change by BP added more of a certain ingredient. Earlier statements by the company had said tests showed the cement to be stable.

The cement mix's failure to prevent oil and gas from entering the well has been identified by BP and others as one of the causes of the accident, the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

BP and Halliburton decided to use a foam slurry created by injecting nitrogen into cement to secure the bottom of the well, a decision outside experts have criticized.

BP's Environmental Disaster: Fishermen Report Louisiana Bays Filled With Oil

Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil said a pollution investigator for the Coast Guard collected samples from the area, and while they had yet to be tested, said, "based on his observation and what he sees in the sample jars, he believes that to be an algal bloom."

Fishermen who have traveled through and fished in the area over the weekend, however, refute these Coast Guard claims.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Governmental officials cannot continue to lie to the American people about this environmental disaster, and believe for one moment that the US public is buying any of it.

This PR campaign is simply to enable Obama's administration the best political cover possible for one of his largest political contributors, BP.

It is transparently obvious that there is absolutely zero concern for the health and welfare of the people living through this tragedy in the Gulf region, nor the safety of food harvested from the region.

Reappearance of Huge Plumes of Oil is Making It Hard to Pretend that the Problem Has Disappeared

There is a flood of information coming out on the Gulf oil spill.

“In its natural state, the numbers are off the chart,” said Heather Reed, the environmental expert for the City of Gulf Breeze who made the discovery. “It’s extremely toxic to human health.”

Lab workers had to dilute the sample 20 times just to get a reading. Reed said samples are usually diluted only once.

America moves on from spill; Gulf coast feels abandoned

What's going on is the continued arrival of oil washing ashore, although in lesser amounts than during the summer. Dire predictions of environmental Armageddon have yet to materialize, but there's also no consensus on how badly the ecosystem has suffered.

At first, no one could agree on how much oil was spilling into the Gulf; now there's disagreement over how much remains. A commission this week faulted Barack Obama's administration for multiple missteps, including an effort to block scientists from telling the public how bad the spill could be early on.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That decision to attempt "...to block scientists from telling the public how bad the spill could be" demonstrates, very clearly, how how desperately Obama wanted to protect BP, one of his biggest campaign contributors, no matter the cost to American human health and safety.

The fact that 96% of the Gulf of Mexico is now open for fishing is scary. The chemicals from the dispersant used in the supposed clean up of the gulf mixed with the VOC’s are a very toxic combo.

The fact is that poisons and toxins have not only harmed humans, they have also caused massive fish kills and an untold number of wildlife deaths.

Six Months Later, an Oil Disaster Spreads Across the Gulf

"If anyone wants to eat the shrimp here then that's their decision," says Kindra Arnesen, wife of a fisherman in Venice and a representative of the Louisiana Coastal Heritage Society. "But I'm not feeding it to my kids until I know it's safe. And I don't have much faith the government knows what's safe and what isn't."

Apparently, most of the rest of America agrees. BP's $100 million PR campaign may convince some that it will "make it right" in the Gulf, but it isn't helping change attitudes about buying the seafood here. According to fishermen and dock owners, the shrimp market price is as bad as it's been in a long time.

Why is the World Rushing Headlong into Environmental Armageddon?

Is there any doubt that planet Earth has been undergoing an environmental armageddon for decades? We are not just referring to the spate of oil spills all over the world such as the BP Gulf Oil Spill, or the many other toxic deluges which go unreported unlike the Hungary Toxic Sludge Disaster, or the ongoing destruction of the world’s rainforests like those being systematically wiped out in the Amazon Basin. We are also alluding to the “unseen” worldwide chemical apocalypse, the global proliferation of electro-pollution (EMR), the major uptick in man-made geopathic stress events on both the micro and macro levels, as well as the relentless contamination of living environments throughout the planet with radioactivity.

Dead animals are Exhibit A in Gulf investigation

Dead birds are wrapped in foil or paper, then sealed in plastic bags to avoid cross contamination. Dolphin tissue samples and dead sea turtles are kept in locked freezers. Field notebooks are collected and secured.

Scientists examining dead animals that were discovered along the Gulf Coast in the wake of the BP oil spill are observing strict laboratory protocols, knowing everything they touch could become evidence in what may prove to be the biggest environmental case in U.S. history.

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether those responsible for the spill violated environmental laws that carry civil and sometimes criminal penalties, and the scientists are taking extraordinary steps to make sure their findings hold up in court.

US reopens vast expanse of Gulf for fishing, but experts stress caution on seafood

While authorities cited tests showing seafood caught along the coasts of Florida and Alabama found no obvious oil, dispersant or chemical smell, experts say the tests did not search for toxic heavy metals which can bioaccumulate up the food chain after major disasters like an oil spill.

The area covers 6,879 square miles (17,800 square kilometers) off the coasts of Florida and Alabama, and is the ninth reopening of waters since the spill, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said in a statement on Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The question of when seafood from the area affected by the Gulf catastrophe will actually be safe to eat is still very much up in the air.

These tests which have been performed are no where near thorough enough to honestly make the declaration that the seafood harvested from here is actually "safe to eat": Obama and BP simply want the issue to go away for the election.

Were fish I was thinking about buying identified as coming from this region, I would probably say "no thanks" for quite some time to come.

BP attorney suggests that the oil giant might seek to cap spill claims at $75 million

In a seemingly never-ending parade of radio, television, print and web ads, in addition to numerous official statements, BP officials have repeatedly insisted that the company intends to make the Gulf Coast and its residents "whole" again. In the latest such PR blitz, BP employee and New Orleans native Iris Cross reiterates that the company will do everything it has to do in order to "make this right."

But yesterday in federal court, an attorney for the oil giant sent shockwaves throughout the Gulf region by suggesting that BP may seek shelter under the $75 million liability cap polluters can invoke under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Oil Pollution Act, introduced by Walter B. Jones, Sr., Democrat North Carolina following the Exxon Valdez disaster, limits the amount of damages oil companies have to pay when they have a major spill. After the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the US Senate briefly entertained a retroactive raising of the cap from $75 million to $10 billion, but that bill went nowhere because after all oil campaign contributions trump the well being of the American people any day.

GULF BLUE PLAGUE: A LETHAL DOSE OF ARSENIC AND LIES (Part III)

Gulf of Mexico coastal residents are civilian casualties of a chemical and biological warfare. We have most of the same toxins in our blood and we share the same symptoms experienced by soldiers who survived and died after exposure to debilitating and deadly chemicals in the European trenches of WWI.

While the rest of the world has been deliberately kept in the dark, the Gulf of Mexico has become a chemical and biological battleground. Our shorelines and coastal areas are now the front lines of this deadly war that will bring an onslaught of casualties during the next decade and beyond. We are all entrenched in a war for our survival and the survival of our families for generations to come.

While the Gulf Blue Plague continues to affect more and more of us each day, our State and Federal governments ignore us, lie to us, and call us everything from mentally ill to conspiracy theorists. Common sense dictates that the only conspiracy evolves from those who deliberately cover-up the truth of what is taking place in the Gulf. The facts dictate that the chemical and biological war taking place here is surely no theory. One can only conclude that the true conspiracy theorists are those who are deliberately concealing the truth.

Deep-Water Drilling Ban Lifted by Salazar

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said he is lifting the Obama administration’s ban on deep-water drilling, citing new safeguards intended to prevent a repeat of BP Plc’s spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

‘I have decided that it is now appropriate to lift the suspension on deepwater drilling for those operators that are able to clear the higher bar that we have set,” Salazar said today on a conference call with reporters.

People Question Whether Coast Really Is Clear – Project Gulf Impact Forum

Six months after the BP oil disaster, some question whether the coast is really clear…..

The non-profit group, Project Gulf Impact, put on a Fishermen’s Forum Sunday at Loyola University where people heard first-hand accounts of how the oil spill has impacted fishing communities and still is today. Arnesen spoke about all the people she knows who almost immediately faced foreclosures. She said, “that was months ago. Now here we are knocking on the six month anniversary and this is still happening. I don’t understand this.”

People question whether coast really is clear

While parts of the Gulf Coast fight off the spill's ripple effects, some areas are still in clean-up mode. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, as recent as Friday, reported oil. "It still blows my mind that they've got all these people out there on the payroll not finding any oil, but the local fishermen, that they keep trying to downsize, keep finding oil," said Nungesser.

"The oil is 10 feet, 12 feet into the grasslands," said Vicki Perrin with the Coastal Heritage Society of LA.

"We don't know where we're going.. don't know what we're doing.. don't know where we're going to end up. What do we do in Plaquemines Parish?," asked Kindra Arnesen, who is married to a fisherman.

BP Is Teaching Kids The Correlation Between Corexit and Klondike Bars

BP and the federal government are working together to brainwash our kids into believing that Corexit is perfectly safe and the gulf is recovering right on schedule. They literally are teaching our school children that Corexit is in numerous items that we eat and poses absolutely no problem.

As we reported days ago, BP plans on “dispelling” the myths of the dispersant in schools throughout the gulf. Why is the government letting BP brainwash our children?

Probe into Gulf of Mexico oil spill criticises White House for blocking scientists' warnings about disaster

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1318435/Gulf-Mexico-oil-spill-...

The White House deliberately blocked estimates on the size of the potential environmental damage caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, a report released yesterday declared.

The investigation by the National Oil Spill Commission said U.S. President Barack Obama and his administration had been over-optimistic about BP's ability to deal with the huge spill and action could have been taken earlier to minimise the disaster.

BP oil spill investigation critical of White House reaction to crisis

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/80475...

Barack Obama's administration has been criticised for its handling of the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill in a report commissioned by the White House.

The revelations from the National Oil Spill Commission come as the Democratic Party struggles to retain control of the US Congress in the elections on Nov 2.

The commission said that after the rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers, the government was too optimistic about the oil company's ability to bring the ruptured well under control.

White House blocked BP oil spill estimates - Govt panel

The White House in the spring blocked release of government estimates on the worst-case scenario of the amount of oil that was spewing from BP's well in the Gulf of Mexico, the presidential commission looking into the accident said on Wednesday.

The commission said its staff was told that in late April or early May that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wanted to make public some of its long-term, worst-case spill models for the Deepwater Horizon accident and requested approval from the White House's Office of Management and Budget to make the information public.

Evidence Refutes BP's and Fed's Deceptions

In August, Truthout conducted soil and water sampling in Pass Christian Harbor, Mississippi; on Grand Isle, Louisiana; and around barrier islands off the coast of Louisiana, in order to test for the presence of oil from BP's Macondo Well.

Laboratory test results from the samples taken in these areas show extremely high concentrations of oil in both the soil and water.

These results contradict consistent claims made by the federal government and BP since early August that much of the Gulf of Mexico is now free of oil and safe for fishing and recreational use.

OSU Researchers find heightened levels of known carcinogens in Gulf

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Although the flow of oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill was halted in mid-July, researchers continue to find elevated concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, in some areas of the Gulf of Mexico.

Some of these chemicals are known carcinogens that pose a range of risks to human health.

Oregon State University researchers began testing for the contaminant May 9, and preliminary results, which have not yet been fully analyzed, suggest that the level of PAHs in the water off the coast of Louisiana experienced a 40-fold increase from May to June. The July data was lost when the device the OSU team uses for water sampling disappeared.

The Oil and the Turtles

“BP is responsible for the damages”—up to $50,000 per turtle, as per the Endangered Species Act—“but it is incumbent on the government to prove what [the damages] are,” says Clark. He has heard rumors that the cleanup crews on Grand Isle, Louisiana, which are mainly made up of prisoners, were bagging dead turtles and birds in plastic bags marked for incineration because no one from Fish and Wildlife responded to their calls. The F.W.S. agents were mainly focused on federally owned coastline. It may go beyond unresponsive government agencies. Clark also heard rumors that BP was deliberately burning oiled sargassum, even though living sea turtles were known to be still in the floating mats.
