From Palestine to Black Lives Matter: Alicia Garza and Phyllis Bennis on Issues Ignored at the Debates

In our special broadcast of the final 2016 U.S. presidential debate, we asked Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza what the major-party candidates should have addressed in their exchange: “I want to see more conversation about what it is going to take to preserve the quality of life of black people in this country, who are being systematically murdered, incarcerated, and otherwise marginalized and disenfranchised.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed especially harsh words yesterday, dubbing the document submitted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as “delusional.” The group failed to mention by name the Temple Mount, a sacred site in Judaism believed to be located inside of the walls of the Noble Sanctuary, a religious plaza in the Old City that shelters the al-Aqsa mosque.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is already ample evidence to suggest that the Old Testament is not an historical document but a religious one. Zahi Hawas, the famed archaeologist, has come to the conclusion that the flight from Egypt actually happened to the Hyksos, not the Hebrews, and Pharaoh gave chase simply because the Hyksos were killing and looting everywhere they went.

But just as the ancient Hebrews copied the story of the great flood from the Epic of Gilgamesh, they appear to have lifted the exodus from the Hyksos. The Bible is not science, it is the collected stories of a primitive tribal people telling each other how important they are. And like fishermen talking about the one that got away, or Ramses with his temple carvings of the did-not-really-happen victory over the Hittites at Kadesh, the writers of the ancient testaments assumed that the people they were telling stories to had no way to verify the claims for themselves. So "embellishment" was a low-risk activity. The writers of the ancient texts were probably not thinking much further into the future than the guys who pen the "Celebrity dates space alien" stories you see at supermarket checkout lines. The fact that the celebrity is a real person does not prove the space alien exists. It's just a story.

The fact is that Egypt (along with Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc.) have vast archaeological treasures from which their ancient histories are confirmed. For the stories told the situation is quite different. The story of ancient Israel has no archaeological support for it, and indeed the available archaeology suggests the stories are just that; stories. Israel, while rich in antiquities, is almost totally devoid of artifacts from this supposedly glorious time in her history. The existence of the fabled First Temple was supported with just two artifacts, a carved staff ornament in the shape of a pomegranate and the Jehoash tablet. Both of these artifacts have been exposed as frauds. We are told that once there was a magnificent temple on that hill, but it "all went away."

But even Israeli archaeologists are now admitting that the available evidence indicates that the first Temple was a very small shrine roughly 1/3 mile south southwest of the Dome of the Rock, and not actually part of the current platform, which is actually the remains of a Roman Fort dating from Herod's time.

How are we to forgive Palestinian extremists who open fire at innocent civilians waiting for a train in Jerusalem??

Palestinian universities are fighting an uphill battle on two fronts, one being the Israeli military occupation, and more recently, the other being the Palestinian government. Although each poses two very different sets of challenges, one outcome is clear. If immediate and decisive intervention is not forthcoming, the structural damage that will set back entire generations of Palestinian students will haunt Palestine’s developmental capabilities for many years to come. That is, if the damage has not already been inflicted.

Roger Waters Eviscerates 'Racist, Sexist Pig' Trump & Urges Israel 'To End Occupation' at Desert Trip

But the political proselytizing wasn't all Trump-related. At the very end of his set, Waters offered up what was truly the riskiest moment of the entire Desert Trip weekend. "It's rare somebody like me gets a platform like this, so I'm going to use it," he said. After reading a poem he wrote in 2004 after George W. Bush was re-elected, Waters voiced solidarity with college students protesting for Palestine and urged people to support the controversial BDS Movement, saying, "I encourage the government in Israel to end the occupation." Slamming Trump to an audience of erstwhile hippies is preaching to the choir -- even if you are a classic rock-loving conservative, you're used to hearing musicians rail against Republicans.

Israel using rocket attacks from fringe groups in Gaza to target Hamas tunnel infrastructure

Ali Tannany, 27, was celebrating his bachelor party with friends, relatives and neighbors in Jabalia Camp in Northern Gaza in August when Israeli missiles were launched into the Strip, shelling several arbitrary areas in the region. The attack was considered an immediate response to the launching of a missile by Palestinian resistance groups on August 21st against Sderot, located less than a mile east of Gaza. Ali and his guests were not shaken when the shelling started and continued their celebration. However, as the sound of bombs got louder and closer, people started leaving the party and Ali had to ask the rest of his guests to seek safety in their homes.

Israel has seemingly altered its reaction policy to resistance rockets; it now responds with immediate, massive seismic missiles. It did so again today, striking targets in Gaza in retaliation for a rocket fired at an Israeli community.

Webmaster's Commentary:

More than likely that one rocket was fired by an Israeli agent provocateur.

Wiesel and Peres dedicated their lives to a project that deflects Jewish culpability in the oppression of the Palestinian people. Though world leaders will gather for Peres’s funeral in the coming days, Jews need to mourn aspects of the violence Wiesel and Peres enabled. New attack on free speech: Pro-Israel groups wage war on campus freedom

College campuses traditionally have been the sites of social and political protest — the combination of youth, intellectual energy, free speech, and academic freedom is a powerful catalyst for vibrant and often heated debate. Given the strain this can sometimes place on the equilibrium of universities, it is not surprising to see limits placed on speech and action. What is unusual is for pressure to come from groups outside the university. That’s precisely what is happening today when it comes to the topic of Israel and Palestine, and the overreach of some pro-Israel organizations into campus free speech is such that even those who oppose an academic boycott of Israel have condemned their actions.

Tell Jerry Brown: Veto AB 2844

Dear Governor Brown,

I urge you to veto AB 2844, an unconstitutional and costly attack on Californians’ free speech and the movement for Palestinian human rights.

AB 2844 chills free speech by falsely associating legal and time-honored boycotts for human rights with unlawful discrimination, and by creating a vague new crime in the process. The bill could cost California taxpayers over $140 million (Department of Finance estimate) and unknown additional sums for fielding complaints and lawsuits.

Although the title and some of the content of AB 2844 have changed over time, its intent remains the same: to stigmatize and suppress protected political speech, especially advocacy for Palestinian human rights through the nonviolent tactics of boycott, divestment and sanctions.

Stop this attack on Californians’ free speech. Veto AB 2844.

Multi-billion Dollar Weapons Deals: Why the US Backs Israel

If multibillion-dollar weapons deals are any measure, Israel and the US have never been closer.

This past week, despite a reported personal rift between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the US and Israel signed a pact that contains the largest pledge of military assistance to a single country in US history. The ten-year agreement will provide $3.8 billion of aid yearly to Israel — up from the $3.1 billion awarded to Israel in the countries’ previous decade-long deal.

In justifying the largesse, commentators and officials have pointed to the threat of a resurgent Iran and ISIS. The deal, National Security Advisor Susan Rice said at a press conference, “will ensure that Israel has the support it needs to defend itself.”

Yet the diplomatic platitudes are less illuminating than a statement Netanyahu made a year ago at the Knesset: “I am asked if we will forever live by the sword,” the prime minister said, then gave his answer: “Yes.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

That the US government is supplying both money and weapons to a wretchedly apartheid, self-proclaimed theocracy with nuclear weapons, does not bode well for peace, either in the Middle East, or the world.

UC Berkeley has reinstated a student-led class on the history of Palestine suspended on 13 September, following sustained outcry by students, members of faculty, lawyers and supporters of campus free speech and academic freedom.

More than 40 off-campus Israel-aligned groups – along with the campus’ Hillel chapter – had pressured the university and its outgoing chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, to censor the class.

The groups claimed it was a venue for “political indoctrination.”

There are indications that an Israeli government official and the heads of Israeli universities also acted to pressure the Berkeley administration.

Two vessels with all-female crews set sail for Gaza from Spain on Wednesday in an attempt to break the nine-year Israeli blockade on the coastal Mediterranean strip. The “Women’s Boat to Gaza” is the fourth of its kind, captained by women-only, with 30 female activists and high-ranking officials aboard the Arabic-named Zaytouna (“Olive”) and the Amal (“hope”).

The organization said in a statement the boats are on a course to pierce Israel’s maritime control over Gaza’s borders, and in doing so, raise awareness of conditions inside of the Strip.

“While our focus is on opposing the blockade against the Palestinian people of Gaza, we see this in the larger context of supporting the right to freedom of movement for all Palestinians,” the group said on their website. “The Occupation daily violates the rights of Palestinians to move freely around their country and to leave and return to their country, as guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

9/11: 15 Years Of A Transparent Lie — Paul Craig Roberts

There are many conspiracy theories about 9/11. The US government’s own expanation of 9/11 is a conspiracy theory in which a few Saudi Arabians outwitted the American national security state. Little doubt that many of the more imaginative conspiracy theories were created for the purpose of stigmatizing any skepticism, no matter how well reasoned and supported, of the official story.

These groups of qualified and experienced people say that the official story of 9/11 is false.

Facebook And Israel Officially Announce Collaboration To Censor Social Media Content

By Whitney Webb

Following Facebook’s censorship controversy over a world famous photograph of the Vietnam War, Facebook has agreed to “work together” with Israel’s government to censor content Israeli officials deem to be improper. Facebook officially announced the “cooperative” arrangement after a meeting took place between Israeli government ministers and top Facebook officials on September 11th. The Israeli government’s frenzied push to monitor and censor Facebook content it deems inappropriate follows the viral success of BDS, or Boycott, Divest, Sanctions, a global non-violent movement that works to expose Israeli human rights violations...

Writing in the Forward, Seffi Kogen suggests that BDS pushes Jewish students out of social justice work on campuses across the country — because, when faced with the choice between supporting activism and supporting Israel, Jews have to choose Israel. But the problem facing Jewish student activists isn’t BDS or intersectionality: it’s the occupation, and the Jewish establishment’s support for an unjust status quo.

Is Bibi A Lizard?

Netanyahu's recent ethnic-cleansing video offers us a spectacular glimpse into Jewish identity politics and the ease with which the Jews morph between ideology and political stance. In the video below, PM Netanyahu accuses the Palestinians and their supporters, by making it a condition of peace that Israel withdraws its illegal settlement, of leanings towards ethnic cleansing

Sep 11 11:05

When about 100 supporters of Palestinian human rights gathered in a hearing room at City Hall to voice their objections to an anti-1st amendment free speech resolution which opposes BDS, they didn’t expect a free inquiry into what BDS was or why this form of non-violent protest was a historically time honored form of protesting injustice going back, in American history, to the Boston Tea Party. But neither did they expect abject rudeness, a total lack of professionalism, and blatant hostility from a body of lawmakers purporting to represent all New Yorkers, not just Zionist supporters of current Israeli policy.

Netanyahu 'ethnic cleansing' comment against Palestinians draws U.S. rebuke

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday said the Palestinians wanted to form a state devoid of a Jewish population and termed it "ethnic cleansing", drawing sharp criticism from the United States.

In a video message, Netanyahu said in reference to the removal of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, "The Palestinian leadership actually demands a Palestinian state with one pre-condition: No Jews. There's a phrase for that: It's called ethnic cleansing. And this demand is outrageous."

Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has stated that a future Palestinian state would not permit a single Israeli settler to live within its borders.

After viewing the video clip that was circulated on social media, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said at a briefing in Washington that the Israeli leader's words were "inappropriate and unhelpful."

Webmaster's Commentary:

A memo to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu; so what, please, do we call the brisk annexation of Palestinians from the West Bank and East Jerusalem, coupled with Israeli serial genocide against them?!?

IS THAT, sir, not "ethnic cleansing"?!?

Blaming the Palestinians for the wrongs done against them by the Israeli state and military is not working anymore, sir; I thought you would want to know!!

Mahmoud Abbas and the Tale of KGB Moles

Western media have been making the most of the claim that Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority, was a KGB agent in Damascus in the 1980s. The news broke on Israel's Channel 1 and was reported by major media outlets globally.

Israeli researchers with the Truman Institute at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Isabella Ginor and Gideon Remez said they came across a document implicating Abbas while studying the famed Mitrokhin archive, smuggled into Britain in 1992 by KGB defector Vasily Mitrokhin.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Anything produced by Israel is automatically suspect, but in this case, the story is fairly weak. Mitrokhin claimed he made handwritten notes at work and smuggled them out of the KGB offices in his shoes and pockets, every night for 12 years. Given extremely tight security procedures at, probably the most secretive organization in the world, how credible is his claim? Was he not making his notes from memory in the safety of his home, rather than at work? And what exactly is in those handwritten notes that are still classified by MI5?

US slams Netanyahu for comparing opposition to settlement policy with “ethnic cleansing”

Washington has berated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for using the term “ethnic cleansing” to describe the Palestinian Authority’s aspirations to create its own state, saying Netanyahu’s choice of words is “inappropriate and unhelpful.”

In a video message posted on Netanyahu’s FB account, the PM that he has “always been perplexed by the notion” that the “Jewish community in Judea and Samaria [the Israeli name for the West Bank] is an obstacle for peace.”

He went on to imply that requesting the dismantlement of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestine territory constitutes an “outrageous demand” equivalent to a call for “ethnic cleansing.”

Israel is planning to build a massive concrete wall which will extend below ground along the Gaza Strip border, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper has revealed. The barrier is aimed at combating the threat posed by Hamas tunnels crossing into the country from Gaza.
The wall, which will stretch along the 96km (60 mile) border around the Gaza Strip, will extend several dozen meters below the ground, and will also be present above the ground. It is estimated to cost US$568 million.

The costly plan – aimed at tackling Hamas terror tunnels – was cleared for publication by Israel’s military censor, according to Ynet, a website affiliated with Yedioth Ahronoth. The wall will be the third defense system of its kind to be erected along the border.

The first 60km (37 mile) barrier was constructed in 1994, following the Oslo Accords. The second was built following Israel’s decision to disengage from Gaza in 2005. However, neither system proved successful in combating the threat of attack tunnels.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The tunnels are primarily used to smuggle food and other needed supplies to the people of Gaza.

The New Anti-Semitism and its Background— An Analysis by Lawrence Davidson

It has been 71 years since the end of the Holocaust. Initially, the world took that horror show as a serious lesson, and the international community created laws against acts of genocide. Those who, even after the public revelation of the Nazi killing fields, still held anti-Semitic opinions kept them to themselves, and as time passed, this particular form of bigotry seemed to be fading away. And, indeed, that might have been its fate if it weren’t for the strange fact that some of the victims of anti-Semitism, in this case a subset of the Jews known as Zionists (those devoted to the founding of a Jewish state), proved susceptible to catching the disease of their oppressors. The Zionists took up their own form of virulent bigotry against Palestinians, and in reaction, this encouraged a new round of anti-Semitism.

US court throws out $655 million verdict against Palestinian Authority

In February 2015, a jury awarded plaintiffs, 11 American families whose relatives were victims of the attacks, $218.5 million of the original $1 billion dollars sought in damages.

Damages in cases filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act are automatically tripled, making the total the PA would have been required to pay $655.5 million.

But the federal appeals court in New York found on Wednesday that the US federal district court in Manhattan lacked the jurisdiction to try the civil case.

The case had been initiated by the lawfare group Shurat HaDin in 2004.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israeli Shurat - HaDin is an agency supported by Netanyahu's office and Israeli Knesset to engage in "lawfare" as a device to bankrupt all adversaries of Israel using US courts.

This is a case of Justice turned upside down when the forces of military occupiers are suing the occupied victims using the power of US courts.

Israel’s Retroactive Legalization Leading to Boom in ‘Pirate’ Settler Outposts in West Bank

Nothing happens quickly in the occupied West Bank. Israel has an ever-growing network of settlements across the occupied territory, and a far-right coalition government heavily dependent on settlers’ political support, and full of political figures calling for settlement expansions to spite the Palestinians.

So when self-proclaimed “outpost entrepreneur” Shimon Riklin brings a few ramshackle trailers into the West Bank and occupies some hilltop, officials have little reason to care, and even if the Palestinians complain, there is little incentive to do anything about it.

This has led to the founding of a separate network of around 100 “pirate outposts” founded by settlers in direct violation of Israeli law, and virtually always on land they don’t have any pretense of owning. They have one thing on their side, and that’s time.

#InIsrael ~~ THE BAN IS ON

Israel has banned an American activist who has worked for years helping Palestinians in Gaza, after denying her entry into the country, detaining her for hours and deporting her against her will. The woman’s ban comes after Israel banned five U.S. citizens at the border in July, all of them the U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation, and another American woman last week crossing from Jordan.

Washington D.C.-based activist, Pam Bailey, 59, who has been to Gaza many times before, arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport on Sunday and told passport control the truth; that she said was there helping a Swedish women’s aid group, Women to Women (Kvinde til Kvinde), that works alongside the Switzerland-based human rights organization Euro-Mediterranean Rights Human Rights Network (EuroMed). Bailey is the head of her own EuroMed-affiliated project, We Are Not Numbers, which tries to help Palestinians under occupation tell their stories.

Russian president Vladmir Putin is asserting himself as the next broker for Middle East peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, a sign of his continued ambition to supplant the U.S. – and Obama – as the major power broker in the region.
