Gilad Atzmon rebuts Elias Davidsson’s Hasbara rant

For the last several years I have repeatedly pointed out that when it comes to Palestine, the discourse of the oppressed is shaped by the sensitivities of the oppressor. No one demonstrates this thought process better than German Jewish activist Elias Davidsson. The tribal operator ended his slanderous article about me in the German New Left Rubikon magazine: “As a longtime anti-Zionist, I will not allow our fight for a just peace in Palestine to be disintegrated by psychopathic anti-Semites, nor will I regard people as comrades spreading the horrible theories of a Jewish world conspiracy. This theory has already resulted in millions of bodies.”

Speaking to Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear, Abunimah indicated that in order for a real resolution to be settled on the matter, more action needs to take place.

"Will it be followed by more than just words? Will this be a trigger to sanctions on some level?" Abunimah asked show hosts Brian Becker and Walter Smolarek. "It certainly sends a signal to the rest of the world, and to civil society, that Israel's position is illegitimate."

Oren Hazan harasses families of Palestinian prisoners

An Israeli member of parliament has verbally harassed Palestinian families hailing from the Gaza Strip on their journey to visit their imprisoned relatives in an Israeli prison, calling their sons "dogs" and "terrorists".

Oren Hazan, a member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, boarded a bus carrying the families of prisoners on Monday about to enter Nafha prison in Israel's south.

Flanked by Israeli police and camera crews, Hazan, a right-wing politician, shouted at one of the mothers: "Your son is a dog. He is a dog. You come to visit the scum who are sitting here in prison, whom you see as your family members."

To another mother, he said in a video posted on his Facebook page: "I am not going anywhere. I am a Knesset [parliament] member."

Israel Reportedly Steps Up Settlement Construction Activities in West Bank

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry earlier slammed the plan to expand Israeli settlements and called for international institutions to confront the move.

Israel has intensified the construction of settlements in the West Bank, the Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported.

According to the report, 15 new settlement housing units as well as new roads are planned to be built in the area, to the west, south and east of the Ahia settlement in the Palestinian village of Jalud. More agricultural lands are reportedly being bulldozed in the area to clear the construction site.

Two Palestinians were killed in Gaza on Friday, bringing to six the number of unarmed protesters killed by Israeli forces during demonstrations against US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The Gaza health ministry identified the slain men as Zakariya Zakarna, 24, and Muhammad Muheisen, 29.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society stated that nearly 700 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces during protests in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip on Friday, 65 by live fire, more than 100 with rubber-coated bullets, and nearly 450 by gas.

Ten journalists were injured by Israeli forces while covering protests on Friday, the Journalists Support Committee stated:

Trump Administration Announces ‘Significant Reduction’ in United Nations Budget

Today, the United Nations agreed on a budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. ?Among a host of other successes, the United States negotiated a reduction of over $285 million off the 2016-2017 final budget. In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key U.S. priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system.

$285 million sounds like a lot of money until you remember that the US gives the UN $8 billion every year, roughly 1/4 of the entire UN budget.

The New York Times tries to make the Ahed Tamimi story go away

The New York Times ran a piece today on the very different ways that Israelis and Palestinians see the slapping incident involving 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi and an Israeli soldier. It is titled, “Acts of Resistance and Restraint Defy Easy Definition in the West Bank,” and is by David Halbfinger.

The article does everything it can to reduce the power of the case, in which a brave 16-year-old girl whose cousin was just shot stands for the inhumanity of the occupation. No, the whole point of the article is to make Israel supporters who may have heard about the incident shake their heads over Dual Narratives, and then move along.

Nothing Sacred

Nothing Sacred? Israeli Forces Clash With Palestinians at Jesus Birthplace on Christmas Eve

Palestinians have staged a protest rally in the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank to once again say "no" to Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Israeli forces have used tear gas and stun grenades against Palestinians who rallied outside an Israeli military tower in Bethlehem, widely known as the traditional birthplace of Jesus Christ. Some of the protesters were dressed as Santa Claus.

According to Bethlehem resident Mohammad al-Lahham, these demonstrators have sent a message to Palestinian children about their determination to follow "the path to freedom, to Jerusalem."

Washington’s humiliation at UN is sign of a washed-up superpower

The humiliating condemnation of the US this week at the UN General Assembly over its Jerusalem policy revealed both Washington’s contempt for democracy and international law, and just how isolated America has become globally.

The overwhelming rejection of President Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital by 128 member nations at the UN is a signal event of how far US international standing has slumped.

Leader of the free world? More like a miscreant whose overbearing megalomaniacal ego is no longer tolerable to virtually everyone else.

Could UN Jerusalem vote be watershed moment?

Despite open threats and bullying by Trump and his ambassador Nikki Haley, 128 countries backed the resolution. Just nine opposed it and 35 abstained.

The vote reaffirmed long-standing resolutions by the Security Council declaring that Israel’s measures to alter the status of Jerusalem are “null and void and must be rescinded.”

This could be a real watershed moment, because many countries openly defied the blatant threats. But this will depend on going beyond statements and resolutions to imposing a cost on Israel –through sanctions – for its violations of international law.

Iran Slams US Threats against Those Resisting Its ‘Thuggish Demands’

It came after US President Donald Trump’s threats to cut aid to countries that vote against his move on Quds at the UN General Assembly.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested that the U.S. could pull foreign aid from nations that vote against it at the United Nations, a warning delivered ahead of a General Assembly vote expected to criticize the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“For all of these nations that take our money and then they vote against us at the Security Council or they vote against us, potentially, at the Assembly, they take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and then they vote against us,” Trump said at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

“Well, we’re watching those votes,” he continued. “Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care. But this isn’t like it used to be where they could vote against you and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they’re doing.”

‘We'll save a lot’: Trump threatens to stop aid to UN members over Jerusalem vote

President Donald Trump has threatened to cut aid to UN member states who vote against US at the upcoming UN General Assembly on the issue of Washington’s Jerusalem move. He said the US will save “billions” in the process.

His threats come ahead of the rare emergency special session of the UNGA scheduled for Thursday. PALESTINIANS, GET OUT!

The US has maintained the fiction for decades of being an even-handed mediator between Israel and the Palestinians. This week, President Donald Trump finally junked this tired, old canard by agreeing to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem from its current headquarters in Tel Aviv. There was huge symbolism in this move that met with universal condemnation. It means the US is abandoning any chance of a two-state solution, which was the original UN plan for Palestine. Henceforth, Palestinians will subsist in a Jewish unitary state as a powerless, restive underclass. Washington is violating international law, the 1993 Oslo Accords, and countless UN resolutions ... 'No moral failures': IDF finds no wrongdoing in death of disabled Palestinian as UN urges probe

The UN is calling for a probe into the killing of a wheelchair-bound Palestinian during a protest against Trump’s Jerusalem decision, despite the IDF stating that it found “no moral or professional failures” related to the death.

“The facts gathered so far by my staff in Gaza strongly suggest that the force used against Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh was excessive,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, said Tuesday.

At least four Palestinians were killed and more than 150 injured, as thousands took to the streets of the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem last Friday. Among those killed was 29-year-old Thurayeh, a disabled activist confined to a wheelchair after losing both of his legs, allegedly, in the Israeli attack on Gaza in 2008.

UN goes easy on Israel for killing disabled Palestinian

The United Nations human rights chief has joined the condemnation of Israel’s killing of a disabled Palestinian man in the occupied Gaza Strip.

But while Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein calls the killing of Ibrahim Abu Thurayya “incomprehensible” and a “truly shocking and wanton act,” his office stops short of calling for any real accountability from Israel.

It thus demonstrates a double standard in which Israel is treated more leniently by the UN than other perpetrators of human rights crimes.

Abu Thurayya, 29, lost both his legs in an Israeli airstrike in 2008. Last Friday he was participating in demonstrations in Gaza near the boundary fence with Israel in protest of the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Abu Thurayya “was protesting around 15 metres from Gaza’s eastern fence when he was shot while sitting in his wheelchair,” the human rights group Al-Haq stated.
