Gaza War: 11 Key Headlines From Scathing Report Rattling Israel's Politicians and Military

The 200-page report is being released about a year and a half after the end of the war in August 2014. The report deals both with the decision making process in the security cabinet relating to Gaza before Operation Protective Edge, as the war is officially known in Israel, and at its outset but also with the issue involving dealing with the attack tunnels in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge, as well as preparation for the intelligence, technological and operational response to the this threat in the years prior to the operation.

Israel Created a Problem That It Doesn’t Want to Solve

Israel has created a terrible problem which it is incapable of solving. That is why it has always been the case that the United States must dictate a solution, but it is unable to do so, paralyzed as it is by the heavy influence of Israel and America’s own apologists and lobbyists.

Trump's suggestion of a one-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict is welcomed by some because Israel's settler policy is said to have made two states impossible, as it was most certainly intended to do. However, a little reflection on hard facts makes it clear that a one-state solution is just as impossible.

ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION AS A TOOL OF REPRESSION

Administrative Detention is widely used by the Israeli occupation regime to suppress political activity and social organizations in the West Bank. It is less known that the same (or a similar) anti-democratic law holds also inside those territories that Israel occupied and ethnically cleaned in 1948 and is used against Palestinian there, which are formally citizens of “democratic” Israel.

Participants held posters and gave out leaflets to commuters. Many stopped to take photos. There was chanting & singing. Then the protesters marched out of GCS going through NYC’s over crowded streets to Trump Towers. When they got there the police had cordoned off several blocks to keep the demonstrators from protesting in front of the building. The marchers were not deterred and continued around the police fences till they met up with the Palestinian protesters who were waiting for the main group to appear. Between them there was a mass vocal outburst and, with a flurry of many Palestinian flags, the marchers moved on to Columbus Circle in front of Trump’s International Hotel where they continued the protest.

Palestinian, 25, dies after being shot by Israeli troops on his way to his last chemo session

On his way to what was supposed to his final chemotherapy session, last November, he boarded the wrong shared taxi. Discovering his mistake, he got off and ran across the highway to catch a taxi going in the opposite direction. Israel Defense Forces soldiers who may have thought he was going to attack them, shot him, seriously wounding him. For the next three months, he was bedridden in Beilinson Hospital, in Petah Tikva, most of the time in the intensive care unit. Throughout that entire period, no one in the IDF thought of updating his parents and family about the condition of their loved one. His mother was the only one allowed who was supposed to be allowed to visit him, but even though she came a few times, on all but one occasion, she was not permitted to enter his room. Just as his condition seemed to be improving, he died, apparently last week. No one thought to inform the family about his death, or the circumstances surrounding it. Israel has not yet returned the body.

"With this visit the United States, again, reaffirms our unbreakable bond with our cherished ally, Israel," Trump said.

It demands the slaughter of Palestinian mothers who give birth to “little snakes.”

PALESTINE ~~ THE RIGHT FOR JUSTICE

“Palestine First” should be the new solution for the Middle East. Since the 1948 establishment of the “Jewish State,” and the contemporaneous nakba — the catastrophic displacement of the Palestinian people — illegally occupied Palestine has been crying for justice. This is more so in this year of 2017 which marks the 50th year of the injustice committed against the illegally ceased territories in 1967.

Trump’s Foreign Policy at a Crossroads

By Robert Parry

If you wanted to bring sanity to a U.S. foreign policy that has spun crazily out of control, there would be some immediate steps that you – or, say, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson – could take, starting with a renewed commitment to tell the truth to the American people.

If you wanted to base U.S. foreign policy on the firm foundation of reality, you also could let the American people in on who is actually the principal sponsor of the terrorism that they’re concerned about: Al Qaeda, Islamic State, the Taliban – all Sunni-led outfits, none of which are backed by Shiite-ruled Iran. Yet, all we hear from Official Washington’s political and media insiders is that Iran is the chief sponsor of terrorism.

Kushner Foundation Bankrolls Radical Jewish West Bank Settlers

In recent years, the parents of Jared Kushner – the son-in-law and trusted confidant of President-elect Donald Trump – have donated tens of thousands of dollars to organizations and institutions located in the West Bank settlements, according to their tax forms.

The U.S. State Department has long held that the settlements are an impediment to peace. During the election campaign, however, Trump’s key advisers on Israel challenged this position.

On average, the family donates a few million dollars a year to charitable causes through the Charles and Seryl Kushner Foundation, tax forms for the years 2010 through 2014 show. The average donation is typically in the range of $5,000 to $10,000. Jared Kushner – as well as his brother and two sisters – sits on the board of his parents’ family foundation, which was created in 1997.

Trump Adopts a Harder Line on Israeli Settlements

President Trump, who presented himself as a staunch supporter of Israel during last year’s campaign, took a harder line on settlements in an interview published on Friday and indicated that he was rethinking his promise to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem. Mr. Trump told an Israeli newspaper that settlements “don’t help the process” and that he did not believe that “going forward with these settlements is a good thing for peace.” He also did not reaffirm his past vow to move the embassy, saying that it “is not an easy decision” and “we will see what happens.” The comments amounted to a striking recalibration of Mr. Trump’s approach to Israel just five days before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House.

Trump’s message to both Israel and Palestinians: I’m in no one’s pocket

Analysis: If Netanyahu thought he had the ‘green light’ to expand settlements and build new ones as soon as Trump took office, the US president has made it clear in recent days that he is the one setting the tone. Israeli minister: The era of the two-state solution is over

The era of the two-state solution is over, after the Knesset approved a law legitimising settlement blocs, Israeli Minister of Culture and Sport, Miri Regev, said.

The minister told Public Radio Israel yesterday that “the era of the two-state solution has ended.”

Trump edges away from moving Israel embassy to Jerusalem and stakes out middle ground on building new settlements – just as Netanyahu is primed for a visit

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is only in the early stages of considering the relocation of America's embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

And he hedged on the issue of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's continued settlement construction, refusing to condemn the practice but also backing off from aggressive campaign statements supporting the practice.

'No, I don't want to condemn Israel,' the president told the Israel Hayom newspaper in an interview published Friday morning. 'Israel has had a long history of condemnation and difficulty. And I don't want to be condemning Israel.'

But he added: 'I am not somebody that believes that going forward with these settlements is a good thing for peace.'

'Every time you take land for settlements, there is less land left,' Trump argued.

Israel issues talking points on controversial law concerning seizure of some Palestinian-owned land

The Israeli parliament’s approval Monday of a contentious law enabling the state to seize some privately owned Palestinian land in the West Bank immediately drew harsh criticism from much of the international community, including some of Israel’s closest allies.

Now, the Israeli government, realizing the law could land them in hot water, with possible lawsuits in the International Criminal Court in The Hague, has created several “talking points” to enable Israeli diplomats worldwide to contend with the global criticism.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No talking points on earth could indemnify and hold harmless an Israeli government which practices a savage, serial genocide against Palestinians and steals their land in such a way that now, no contiguous state of Palestine is possible, because of where these settlements stand.

This is why BDS movement against Israeli goods (boycott, dis investment, and sanctions) is more critical against Israel than ever before.

Israel’s efforts to erase Palestinian history reflect ‘incremental genocide,’ Ehrenreich says

The question about genocide– yes, it’s an incremental genocide. And I think that’s a word that gives a lot of people pause and it certainly should. We don’t see the absolutely mass slaughters, although in Gaza I think we’ve seen something very much like it that we usually associate with genocide. But– the attempts to erase a people, to just erase them, to erase their history, I think follow a logic that can only be called genocidal. I mean, every time someone says– and people say it all the time, I get it on twitter all the time– “There’s no such thing as a Palestinian,” or “There was nobody there when the Zionists arrived”– these are genocidal statements, these are attempts to erase a culture, erase a history, decimate a people and I think they should be recognized as that. - See more at: http://mondoweiss.net/2017/02/palestinian-incremental-ehrenreich/#stha...

Seven Years Ago Today, The 'Irvine 11' Dared to Heckle An Israeli Ambassador on an American Campus- & Learned How 'Special' Israel Really Was

Seven years ago, on Feb 8, 2010, students at UC Irvine protested a speech given by Israeli ambassador Michael Oren. They heckled the Israeli, calling him a war criminal and other such things, and were escorted out of the auditorium by campus police. But that wasn't the end of it. In a Shift, Trump Warns Against New Israeli Settlements as Netanyahu Plots Major Expansion

The White House abruptly changed course in its dealings with Israel Thursday when it issued a statement urging restraint by the Israelis when it comes to building new settlements, a hot button issue regionally and globally. “While we don’t believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal,” the White House said in a statement. Protest Netanyahu’s visit on 6 February

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will be in London to meet Theresa May on Monday 6 February. Join our protest opposite Number 10 Downing Street, between 11.30am to 1.30pm.

Over the last few weeks, Netanyahu has made clear he will ignore the UN resolution 2334 adopted last December, and regards Donald Trump’s election as US president as a green light to expand settlement construction. Since Trump’s inauguration, there have been 6,000 new settlement units announced.

Theresa May must make Netanyahu aware that Britain was serious when it supported UN resolution 2334. The resolution confirmed the illegality of Israel’s occupation and condemned settlement building as illegal and an obstacle to peace.

Palestinians sue Trump adviser, Netanyahu for terrorism

A group of US citizens and Palestinian nationals is suing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and key members of US President Donald Trump’s administration for perpetrating and enabling war crimes.

Their lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, alleges a money laundering scheme that involves the US defendants raising charitable donations to send to Israeli government leaders.

Based on the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Alien Torts Statute, the complaint alleges that the Israeli officials use the money to fund settlements and violent extremism in the occupied West Bank, which the complaint identifies as “international terrorism.”

Trump warns Israel: Stop announcing new settlements

WASHINGTON – The White House warned Israel on Thursday to cease settlement announcements that are “unilateral” and “undermining” of President Donald Trump’s effort to forge Middle East peace, a senior administration official told The Jerusalem Post.

For the first time, the administration confirmed that Trump is committed to a comprehensive two-state solution to the Israeli- Palestinian conflict negotiated between the parties.

For hardline West Bank settlers, Jared Kushner's their man

For many in the Israeli settlement of Bet El, deep in the occupied West Bank, Donald Trump's choice of Jared Kushner as his senior adviser on the Middle East is a sign of politics shifting in their favor.

They regard Kushner, whose family's charitable foundation has donated tens of thousands of dollars to their settlement, as part of a diplomatic rebalancing after what they view as eight years of anti-Israel bias under the U.S. administration of Barack Obama.

"He will stand up for our interests. I suppose he will lean in our favor," said Avi Lavi, 46, who has lived in Bet El for more than 40 years. "He'll be fair, as opposed to Obama, whose policy leaned always towards the Arabs."

Trump invites Netanyahu to Washington for visit: White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Washington in early February during a phone call in which they discussed the importance of strengthening the U.S.-Israeli relationship, the White House said on Sunday.

In his first call with Netanyahu since taking office on Friday, Trump stressed his "unprecedented commitment to Israel's security."

Israel approves settlement homes following Trump inauguration

Israel has approved hundreds of new settlement homes in occupied East Jerusalem, after the staunch pro-Israel US President Donald Trump took office.

Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Meir Turgeman told AFP: "Now we can finally build."

Israel's PM reportedly delayed approval given the opposition of Barack Obama, who infuriated Israel by allowing a UN resolution against settlements to pass.

Settlements in East Jerusalem are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

The police were there to carry out demolition orders against 15 homes in the Palestinian Bedouin village, which the Israeli government aims to evacuate in order to establish a Jewish settlement in its place.

Trump and Israel

Trump started off his campaign signaling he would be “neutral” on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, but he has shifted considerably in recent weeks toward the views of the staunchest Zionists. This has included tapping a man considered to be to the right of conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as U.S. ambassador to Israel, choosing another pro-settlement Republican as his international business adviser, welcoming the heretofore marginalized Israeli ambassador into the bosom of his inner circle in Washington, and, just recently, appointing his son-in-law, who is reportedly behind bringing all these players into the fold, as a senior adviser.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The fundamental reality here is that the government of Israel has never seen a two-state solution satisfactory to either its territorial, or geopolitical, ambitions.

So what we are seeing now is a brisk Israeli expropriation of lands in the East Bank and West Jerusalem, and the way these settlements have been placed has made it impossible for there to be a contiguous Palestinian state.

The proposal of moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will inflame tensions immeasurably, and demonstrate to all the other countries in the region, that the US government cannot ever be considered an "honest broker" of peace in the region again.

I would like to sincerely hope that this is not President Trump's intention.

But it appears that Netanyahu is counting on this move, as evidenced by this story in haaretz.com:

Netanyahu briefed about potential violent scenarios if the US government moves its embassy to Jerusalem

Broken promises: A history of UN resolutions and West Bank Settlements

At the end of last year, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution condemning Israel's settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The resolution was particularly noteworthy due to the United States taking the unusual decision to abstain on the resolution, allowing it to pass rather than vetoing. But will the new resolution make a difference to the peace process and Israel’s policy of settlement expansion?

Since Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has remained clear that settlements are illegal and an obstruction to a peaceful resolution. Here, we take a look back at the history of UNSC resolutions regarding Israeli settlement activity and expansion onto Palestinian land, and see how this has shaped the conflict between Israel-Palestine and plans for peace.

Obama: 'Moment may be passing' for two-state solution

The prospects for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are waning because of growing Israeli settlement of the West Bank, Barack Obama has said in his final press conference as US president.

Obama said on Wednesday that his administration did not block a UN resolution on Israeli settlement activity last month because it felt a two-state solution was the only option for peace.

"The goal of the resolution was to simply say that the ... growth of the settlements are creating a reality on the ground that increasingly will make a two-state solution impossible," he said.

"It was important for us to send a signal, a wakeup call that this moment may be passing."

Webmaster's Commentary:

A memo to President Obama; the moment you are describing never, ever existed for the Israeli government; to believe that it ever did demonstrates an absolutely delusional grasp of the existing facts on the ground.

The placement of these Jewish-only settlements means that there is no possibility for a contiguous Palestinian state to exist, ever, and the placement of these settlements was engineered to insure that would be the case.
