Housing's Echo Bubble Now Exceeds the 2006-07 Bubble Peak

If you need some evidence that the echo-bubble in housing is global, take a look at this chart of Sweden's housing bubble.

A funny thing often occurs after a mania-fueled asset bubble pops: an echo-bubble inflates a few years later, as monetary authorities and all the institutions that depend on rising asset valuations go all-in to reflate the crushed asset class.

Webroot antivirus goes bananas, starts trashing Windows system files

Webroot's security tools went berserk today, mislabeling key Microsoft Windows system files as malicious and temporarily removing them – knackering PCs in the process.

Not only were people's individual copies of the antivirus suite going haywire, but also business editions and installations run by managed service providers (MSPs), meaning companies and organizations relying on the software were hit by the cockup.

Between 1200 and 1500 MST (1800 and 2100 UTC) today, Webroot's gear labeled Windows operating system data as W32.Trojan.Gen – generic-Trojan-infected files, in other words – and moved them into quarantine, rendering affected computers unstable.

Reap What You Sow: Facebook’s Fake News Algorithm Hurts Mainstream Newspaper

After the results of last year’s election came in, the hacks in the mainstream media struggled to find an explanation for how Trump could have been elected. They simply couldn’t fathom that voters would choose someone other than the establishment pick. In their angst, they threw up their hands and declared that the people had been bamboozled by “fake news,” a vague and poorly defined term that just so happened to include every news source that disagreed with them.

National Reciprocity Is (Finally) Being Pushed In Washington

Well, it’s finally happening. We’ve all heard the rumblings from Capitol Hill about a supposed National Reciprocity Act. If it ever made it to the floor, we’d have a chance of traveling all fifty states so long as our home state permits us to carry concealed and we follow the rules of the state we’re in. There is a mixture of reactions to this bill but they have been overall pretty positive — especially for those who like to travel but hate having to leave the gun at home.

Here’s a caterpillar that thinks plastic tastes fantastic. Scientists have discovered that the larvae of the wax moth will easily munch through a common plastic known as polyethylene, turning it into back into a useful compound found in all kinds of consumer products.

The findings, published in the journal Current Biology, reveal an unlikely ally in the fight to reduce and reuse the enormous amounts of plastic waste that humans produce every year.

Wikipedia founder to fight fake news with new Wikitribune site

Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, is launching a new online publication which will aim to fight fake news by pairing professional journalists with an army of volunteer community contributors.

Wikitribune plans to pay for the reporters by raising money from a crowdfunding campaign.

Wales intends to cover general issues, such as US and UK politics, through to specialist science and technology.

Those who donate will become supporters, who in turn will have a say in which subjects and story threads the site focuses on. And Wales intends that the community of readers will fact-check and subedit published articles.

This amazing iceberg in Newfoundland comes courtesy of some terrible weather

A towering iceberg, about the same size as the one that brought down the Titanic, is wowing residents and tourists off the coast of Newfoundland.

The Canadian Ice Service classified it as "large," meaning it is between 46 metres and 73m tall and 122m and 240m long.

The spectacular sight is linked to an absolutely miserable weather pattern that has tormented Newfoundland this spring.

"Since early April, we've had persistent winds from the north and northeast, which pushed the iceberg closer to shore," said Newfoundland broadcast meteorologist Eddie Sheerr.

These same icy winds have combined with moisture streaming in off the ocean to blast Newfoundland with extreme amounts of snow and ice.

The snow came first.

WORLD War Three fears have intensified as Kim Jong-un threatened a pre-emptive strike on the US, Mike Pence raced back to Washington to be by President Donald Trump’s side and China has sent troops to the North Korean border.

Israel Makes It Official: The Destruction of Syria Will Legitimize Israeli Land Grabs

Israel's deputy minister for diplomacy Michael Oren has announced that 'there is no Syria to negotiate with', which means that Israel's illegal occupation of the Golan should be recognized by the international community.

Capitalizing on the chaos and destruction of a six-year war to push for international recognition of occupied land? That's not very neighborly.

According to Oren, "Without Israel there [in the Golan], the region would be jeopardized. ISIS would be on the Kinneret."

Perhaps this is the reason why Israel has repeatedly targeted the Syrian Army and its allies fighting Islamic State in Syria, instead of bombing ISIS?

COPS DETAIN ENTIRE SCHOOL, ILLEGALLY SEARCH/GROPE 900 KIDS — FIND NOTHING, PARENTS FURIOUS

Children feel violated, parents are furious, and a lawsuit is getting filed after the Worth County Sheriff’s office conducted an illegal search of 900 students — in the name of the war on drugs. The rights-violating intrusive and aggressive patdowns and drug dog searches yielded absolutely nothing.

On April 14, when the students of Worth County High School returned from spring break, they arrived at school to find a police state had taken over. The sheriff and his deputies — with no probable cause — detained and illegally searched every single child in the school, all 900 of them.

When kids went home that day to tell their parents what happened, naturally, they were furious as it is a gross violation of the children’s 4th Amendment rights.

“It’s essentially a fourth amendment violation,” said attorney Mark Begnaud. “It’s 900 illegal searches, suspicion-less pat downs, suspicion-less searches.”

STUDY: INFANTS WITH DTP VACCINE 5 TO 10-TIMES MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DYING

For many years, public health advocates have vainly urged the CDC and WHO to conduct studies comparing vaccinated vs. unvaccinated populations to measure overall health outcomes.

Mogensen and his team of scientists found that African children inoculated with the DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine, during the early 1980s had a 5-10 times greater mortality than their unvaccinated peers.

Welcome to Granskning Sverige

Granskning Sverige (Review Sweden) is a citizen journalism initiative where ordinary citizens call opinion makers, journalists, and politicians to ask them the questions the establishment media journalists avoid at all cost. The initiative was started by the pseudonym Johan Andersson in 2014. Shortly after the start the pseudonym Erik Johansson joined in the effort to change the media narrative in Sweden. After that we have had a couple of citizens joining, and a few quitting, but Nina Drakfors was the first to use her real identity in the GS effort. We also have the pseudonyms Arg Norrlänning (Angry Northerner), Feministinspektionen (The feminist inspection), and a few others with their own YouTube channels in this slowly growing citizen’s movement to hold the pc-crowd accountable for the damage they have caused Sweden.

Canadian dairy farmers defend industry after trade tirade by U.S. President Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized Canadian trade policies for being unfair. He called Canada a ‘disgrace’ for how the country is treating U.S. dairy farmers.

Trump slammed Canada for the second time this week, pushing his “America first” message.

Leaders in the Canadian dairy industry are defending the supply-management system.

“It allows us to focus on Canadian consumers and Canadian production,” said Holstein Canada president Orville Schmidt.

He added Canadian farmers produce enough to meet demand.

“We are not sending milk to the U.S. because that’s not our market,” Schmidt said. “If [Trump] wants to bring milk to Canada, it’s only because he wants to find a place to sell his surplus. So maybe he needs to control his surplus and not try to find a place to sell it.”

Russia and China already have established systems to do global trade bypassing the US dollar. What Washington did to Iran — cutting their banks off SWIFT – is now unthinkable against Russia and China.

Panic Buying Hits Japan Ahead Of Possible War: “Nuke Shelters, Air Purifiers, Anti-Radiation Supplies…” by Mac Slavo

As tensions heat up with North Korea and the potential for a nuclear exchange becomes all the more real, residents of Japan are panic buying everything from nuclear shelters to air purifiers in preparation:

Sales of nuclear shelters and radiation-blocking air purifiers have surged in Japan in recent weeks as North Korea has pressed ahead with missile tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions.

A small company that specializes in building nuclear shelters, generally under people’s houses, has received eight orders in April alone compared with six orders during a typical year.

The company, Oribe Seiki Seisakusho, based in Kobe, western Japan, also has sold out of 50 Swiss-made air purifiers, which are said to keep out radiation and poisonous gas, and is trying to get more, said Nobuko Oribe, the company’s director

Serbia Warns Albania Bid to Annex Kosovo Could Lead to War

erbian officials are warning that the Albanian ambitions to absorb Kosovo could easily lead to another war in the Balkans, and that NATO and the European Union need to publicly rule out that possibility in an effort to forestall another ethnic war spanning the region.

The status of Kosovo is a big sore spot in the region, after NATO’s 1999 war imposed a separation of Kosovo from Serbia, which was supposed by the Kosovar Albanian majority but widely opposed by ethnic Serbs in Kosovo. Kosovo’s independence is heavily contested, with a number of countries refusing to recognize it.

Tensions With North Korea Rise as Volleyball Game Ends

Tensions between the United States and North Korea continue to soar, with speculation that the US could still attack North Korea at any moment, with the USS Carl Vinson and its carrier strike group expected to arrive in the vicinity in the next few days.

The Carl Vinson has been driving a lot of speculations lately, but South Korean officials saw another reason to be concerned, that the North Korean volleyball games taking place at one of their nuclear sites appear to have come to an end, which they used to speculate that another nuclear test could be imminent.

The intramural volleyball games at Punggye-ri have been the subject of considerable attention, with some speculating that the games were organized to “confuse” the United States, while North Korean state media offered no insight into what the games were all about.

Erdogan calls Shia paramilitary groups ‘terrorists’, threatening Turkish intervention in Iraq

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan labeled the paramilitary forces fighting the Islamic State in Iraq as “terrorists” and part of Iran’s “Persian expansion policy”.

“Who are al-Hashd al-Shaabi? Who is backing them? The Iraqi parliament supports al-Hashd al-Shaabi, but, honestly, they are a terrorist organization, and should be known who stands behind it,” he said during an interview with the Qatari channel Al Jazeera on Wednesday.

Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesperson of the Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU), also known as al-Hashd al-Shaabi, called Erdogan’s remarks as “a violation against an Iraqi security institution” that is “recognized by the parliament and the state”.

Hadi Al-Ameri, the former Iraqi minister of transportation and the head of the PMU Badr Organization, one of the biggest PMU forces in Iraq, in response called for a complete stop of trade with Turkey.

IMF says Greece needs to dig even deeper

The International Monetary Fund had a sobering message for Greece this weekend: Even if the country secures debt relief from its European creditors -- a question that is by no means assured with bailout talks still deadlocked -- the nation still needs even more painful economic overhauls than currently planned.

Seven years into an economic crisis and another near-term financial emergency looming, that is a message no Greek wants to hear and a key reason why the IMF is also urging Germany and Athens' other European creditors to give the country hope in the form of real debt relief.

The country's "fiscal and structural reforms...pension reforms, tax reforms, are only a down payment," said Poul Thomsen, IMF's European department chief and Greece's original bailout architect, on the sidelines of the fund's semiannual meeting of finance ministers and central bankers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Greece's government should "pull an Iceland", declare its debt odious, and throw the crooked politicians and bankers who got them into this mess into jail for what they have done to the Greek people, and the Greek economy.

Turkey says it may suspend migrant deal with EU

Ankara will present a new document in May on its visa-free deal with the EU which if not accepted would put the refugee deal with the bloc at a standstill, EU Minister Ömer Çelik has said.

In an interview with private news channel CNN Turk on Aprik 22, Çelik said Turkey was doing its part in the deal with EU.

He said the refugee deal between the two sides would continue if the EU accepted Ankara’s fresh offer that would be submitted in May.

“If they accept our proposal, the [refugee] deal would be completed in a positive way, otherwise it would come to a standstill,” he said.

The EU and Turkey agreed in March last year on a plan to stop migration through illegal channels in the Aegean Sea by cracking down on human traffickers and improving the conditions of nearly 3 million Syrian refugees in Turkey.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Turkey reneges on this deal, all hell will break loose in Europe, which is already straining, economically and socially, from the huge impacts of previous waves of immigration from the Middle East and North Africa.

DEA JUST ADMITTED TO SELLING DRUGS ON STREETS – YOUTH ‘INFORMANTS’ FORCED TO HELP

The hypocrisy that is the DEA’s refusal to acknowledge the medicinal benefits of cannabis cannot go unnoted; yet, more importantly, they have been caught red-handed, admitting tacitly during a House Judiciary Committee Hearing that the DEA sells drugs to people on the streets with the goal of catching “bigger fish.”

The War on Drugs is perpetuated by the Drug Enforcement Agency who insists on locking people up for years at a time, for possession of what is still scheduled as a Class A substance, though now legal in many US states.

In the first week of April, the DEA was questioned over whether they allow shipments of drugs into the community for the sake of making a bigger bust down the track. The Washington Post reported on the transcript between Louisiana Democratic Rep. Cedric L. Richmond asking the DEA’s appointed acting director Chuck Rosenberg on the issue:

WMD FALLOUT: MIT Analysis Blows a Hole in Washington’s Sarin Attack Story Once Again

It’s been almost two weeks since Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Professor Theodore Postol directly disputed claims concerning the official US report regarding the alleged chemical weapons attack out of Khan Shaykhun in the Idlib province of Syria. Postol’s initial analysis, along with its addendum, appeared to echo aspects of what MIT research affiliate and former US Congressional staffer Subrata Ghoshroy observed in the aftermath of the Syrian chemical incident in East Ghouta, Damascus in 2013.

I’m in Awe of How Fast Brick-and-Mortar Retail is Melting Down

As so many times, Private Equity firms are in the thick of it.

Mall traffic is sagging. Department store sales have been in decline since 2001. Most retailers are loaded up with debt. Many have been losing money. Now they’re running out of options. Store closings numbered in the thousands last year. This year they promise to get much worse. “Zombie malls” have become reality, their vast parking lots rented to car dealers to store their excess vehicle inventory.

Turkey, After The Referendum

Turkey is a fundamentally divided society. The vote this weekend over a referendum to give the President additional powers and a longer term, showed the extent of Turkey’s divisions. The “Yes” vote, a victory for President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, was won with 25 million votes, while the “No” campaign fetched almost 24 million votes. But given the nature of electoral democracy, a fractured verdict will nonetheless mean an expansion of the powers of Mr. Erdo?an and of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Cassini probe heads towards Saturn 'grand finale'

Cassini has used a gravitational slingshot around Saturn's moon Titan to put it on a path towards destruction.

Saturday's flyby swept the probe into an orbit that takes it in between the planet's rings and its atmosphere.

But the manoeuvre means also that it cannot escape a fiery plunge into Saturn's clouds in September.

U.S. SIGNALS GREATER INVOLVEMENT IN SAUDI-LED WAR IN YEMEN

Secretary of Defense James Mattis said last week that the U.S. would increase its involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, a war that has claimed the lives of 4,000 civilians in two years and drawn international criticism for war crimes committed by the Saudis.

As the Trump administration’s foreign policy continues to push the U.S. closer to a new war, Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced last week that the U.S. is set to increase support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen, a war that has drawn international condemnation for the Saudis’ frequent bombings of civilian infrastructure like schools and hospitals.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sec-Def Mattis, a word, please.

The level of Iranian assistance to the Houthi rebels has been a very hard bit to pin down.

And if you really want to identify the most destabilising culprit in the Middle East, who is the trouble maker par excellence, you have to look no further than the country of Israel, which was cheerleading for the war against Iraq, and is currently campaigning to ratchet up the war against Al-Assad in Syria, and to regime change Iran (and for Tel Aviv, these actions always should be purchased with American blood and money; never their own.)

In the meanwhile, there is a question I must ask you, even if others fear asking it: how morally comfortable are you, please, in the US government's being complicit in Saudi war crimes in Yemen?!?

The Saudis are killing and maiming innocent children with their bombing runs.
The US military is providing "guidance" for these strikes.

Yemeni children are being starved to death through malnutrition, because of US-Enabled, Saudi blockades of Yemeni ports:

The Saudi military is using depleted uranium weapons in Yemen:

Saudi coalition using depleted uranium weapons in Yemen

The result of this use of DU is causing massive rises in cancer rates; stillbirths, and horrific deformities of Yemeni children:

Images: Yemeni children born with horrific birth defects due to exposure to depleted uranium weapons

And yet, apparently, the Royal House of Saud; the Saudi government; and the US government, and you, sir, are perfectly comfortable with poisoning Yemeni children in the womb, and destroying not only their lives, but their families' lives as well. If there is a more cruel form of child abuse, I cannot imagine what that is.

I am profoundly reminded, in this obscenely callous disregard for human life as reflected in these Saudi military tactics, of the comment made by the Papal Legate at the siege of Montsegur against the Cathars, when he was informed that not only men were in the besieged castle, but women and children were also with them. He said, "Kill them all; God will find his own."

I just have to wonder when the massive air strikes, coupled with US boots on the ground, will accomplish this Saudi genocide in Yemen. And my sense of it is, relatively soon.

And by the way, Sec-Def Mattis: are you going to be informing our military who will comprise the "boots on the ground" element of the US military's plan to obliterate the Yemeni people in full, that if they are deployed to Yemen, they and their families also risk exposure to DU, and that their kids may well be born with precisely the same birth defects we are seeing in Yemeni children, and we did with the Iraqi children of Fallujah?!?

Thought not.

OUTRAGE AFTER AT LEAST 5 EU NATIONS ELECT SAUDI ARABIA ON UN WOMEN'S RIGHTS COUNCIL

In what may have been the biggest trolling of the United Nations in recent history, Saudi Arabia was elected via secret ballot in the UN Economic and Social Council to the 45-member UN Commission on the Status of Women last week. According to Reuters, twelve other countries were also elected by the council in Geneva to serve for a four-year term, ending in 2022: Algeria, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Iraq, Japan, South Korea, Turkmenistan, Ecuador, Haiti and Nicaragua.

The news promptly sparked mocking and ridicule. UN Watch, a human rights organization monitoring the performance of the United Nations, strongly condemned the appointment of Saudi Arabia to post, citing Riyadh’s poor women’s rights record and widespread gender inequality.

“Electing Saudi Arabia to protect women’s rights is like making an arsonist into the town fire chief. It’s absurd,” Hillel Neuer, the UN Watch chief, said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Saudi most likely were able to buy the votes necessary to get them on the Commission.

As a country which still permits, and even encourages, the barbaric and brutal practice of female genital mutilation, Saudi Arabia was the LAST country on the planet that should have had a seat at this table; so they most likely bought it.

The Trump “Dossier” Takes Another Credibility Hit

It is gradually becoming clear that the central, perhaps only, evidence in the investigation of alleged “collusion” between some/all members of the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence to enable Trump to pull off an Electoral College win though losing the popular vote is the “dossier” compiled by former British intelligence operative Lexington Christopher Steele.

Parts of the dossier are known to be dodgy. Parts of it seem to be composed of information the British intelligence apparatus had either passed to the US, or that the US had passed to the Brits, and Steel obtained access to via his circle of contacts. Steele seems to have salted his dossier with enough valid intelligence that is gave an air of credibility to the whole thing. In fact, the FBI deemed is sufficiently credible that they offered to pay Steele for more work and they used the dossier, the one you saw in BuzzFeed, as part of the evidence to get FISA surveillance authorized on Carter Page.

Anti-Muslim threats, attack hoax created by US professor to keep his job

An assistant professor at Indiana State University has been arrested for allegedly making false claims of anti-Muslim threats against him and reporting a made-up attack. Azhar Hussain has been charged with obstruction of justice and harassment.
Campus police said students and faculty members, both Muslim and non-Muslim, were sent threatening emails in March.

The emails contained anti-Muslim sentiment and threats against the Muslim community at Indiana State University (ISU), naming Hussain as a target.

Hussain reported an attack on March 24 as he was entering his office, in which he claimed to have been thrown to the floor, the Tribune Star reports. At the time, ISU police said people in the area at the time of the reported attack didn’t see anything suspicious.
