Alaska spill site was fire scene 3 years ago

A storage tank that spilled crude oil from the trans-Alaska pipeline Tuesday, shutting down the line, was the site of a fire three years ago for which Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. faces fines of $506,000.

Alyeska continues to contest the proposed fines for safety violations connected to the fire at Pump Station 9 near Fort Greely, about 100 miles south of Fairbanks.

Up to several thousand barrels of crude spilled from the pipeline Tuesday into a 2.3 million-gallon storage tank, which overflowed into a containment area. The containment area, a yard lined with an impermeable barrier and surrounded by a berm, apparently captured all the oil.

Many with ties to Australia are taking the time to voice support of recent decisions.

(MELBOURNE / SALEM) – Australia’s principled decision to expel an Israeli diplomat has been highly regarded throughout the world, not just for their stand against Israel’s abuse of Australia’s Passport system but especially because of their abuse of a long standing friendship..

The Aussies are shocked and saddened by the news as it breaks all across the country.

John Kerry Says Voter Anger at Washington Is Hypocritical

"I think there's a comprehension gap," said Kerry. His point: While people may not be feeling the benefits of the bailouts and healthcare reform yet, Congress has been working with Obama to right the economic ship. Still, he sounded sympathetic to those kicked around by the economy. "There's a sense of some things unraveling" to them, said Kerry.

But he said that the D.C.-directed attacks are hypocritical, since many of those attacking Washington spending presumably want to keep their Social Security and Medicare and want Washington to play a big role in the Gulf Oil cleanup. "There's a huge contradiction on a daily basis," he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Senator Kerry: I have rarely seen such a completely out-of-touch, mischaracterization of the current sentiment in this country.

Taxation without representation were the watchwords of the American Revolution.

But what we are seeing happen in Congress, in terms of most Congressional representatives having become "acquisitions" of the major corporations (particularly concerning the large defense companies), is just that circumstance happening again.

The only perspective of most Congressional members toward the citizens they allegedly represent appears to be as a (theoretically unending) supply of tax money, to be tapped cavalierly without ever having to balance the Federal government, or rein in government spending in any meaningful way.

Without these insane and immoral wars without end and their costs, which thinking US citizens do not support (plus the 3 billion the US government coughs up - illegally - for Israel every year), there would be money left for the social security and medicare for which American workers have theoretically paid their entire working lives, but will not be getting, because this government is broke.

Without these wars, there would be money to mend infrastructure, highways, bridges, schools, and hospitals

It is obvious that this is a man who has never in his life had to make payroll, keep employees employed during tough times, had his credit line pulled by a a bank through no fault of his own (just because the bank reserves were thin), or found his good-paying job outsourced, leaving him with no way to support a family or pay his mortgage.

Those issues, coupled with the fact that we are dealing with a Federal government which has spent itself nearly into bankruptcy, are the reasons why Americans are legitimately angry at this government. The anger here is not hypocritical; it is completely logical, and Senator Kerry understands, at some level, that these concerns are true.

Israeli Nuclear Espionage: The Art of Keeping America at Risk for Fun and Profit

By Maidhc Ó Cathail

This week, newspapers around the world received reports and signed documents from South Africa. The reports said that, in 1975, Israel agreed to sell South Africa nuclear weapons. South Africa then released an arms agreement signed by current Israeli President Shimon Peres. This is the document “heard round the world.”

Meetings are being held in New York to set up a conference for 2012 to guarantee that the Middle East is nuclear free. Israel has been informed that it will not be able to hide behind denials and that the nuclear arsenal put on the sale block by Israel in 1975, and nobody knows how many times since, has to go. When Israel was finally caught, it changed at least one part of a game, but the game will go on.

JEFF GATES: Watching Israel Delegitimize the United States of America

What’s behind the sudden crisis in Korea? Who benefits?
Which nation’s nuclear arsenal is problematic?

The U.S.-Israeli relationship has long been America’s Achilles heel. Our first president warned against “entangled alliances” particularly when, as here, there’s a “passionate attachment.”

Our “special relationship” with this rogue state has placed the U.S. outside the same system of international law that we now seek to impose on others, including Iran.

Our handling of the current crisis on the Korean peninsula could restore our tattered reputation.

What’s the first issue that needs to be addressed?

Poll: Majority give Obama, feds failing grade on oil spill response

The oil spill off the Gulf Coast is staining more than Louisiana's beaches.

The response to the disaster by energy giant BP, President Obama and the federal government all get terrible grades from Americans in a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Actually, the failure was in failing to be prepared for this in the first place, granting all kinds of waivers and exemptions to BP, handing a "Safety award" to the Deepwater Horizon as a PR stunt, and having the government inspectors in charge of oi platform safety spending their time high on meth, watching porn on their government computers while letting the oil companies fill out the inspection and audit reports!

This is the Federal Governments' Chernobyl disaster and just as that avoidable catastrophe destroyed the credibility of the USSR so too is the BP disaster and its aftermath destroying the already-strained credibility of the US Federal Government.

May 26 13:56

Public opinion turning against Obama on oil spill

The American public is losing its patience with President Obama over his handling of the Gulf Coast oil spill.

In the five weeks since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig sent hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, Obama had largely escaped political fallout. But as BP attempts yet again to seal the leak, a new USA Today/Gallup Poll finds a majority of Americans unhappy with Obama's handling of the spill. According to the poll, 53 percent rate Obama's handling "poor" or "very poor"; 43 percent believe Obama is doing a good job.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If "TOP KILL" fails to stop the Gulf Oil volcano, I think we can count on attacking, well, anybody next week as a distraction.

And while Obama bears a share of the blame for his handing out of waivers and exemptions to BP, the fact is that the entire government has failed in their role of caring for the national infrastructure, which is what WE THE PEOPLE pay them to do. The Federal Government is so totally subverted by Israeli dual nationals that they spend all their time screaming about who is a better friend to Israel, and shoveling money and weapons to Israel as hard as they ca. Meanwhile, our roads are crumbling our coal mines caving in, our bridges are collapsing, and of course, the Deepwater Horizon wreck is gushing oil onto the Gulf States harder than DC gushes red ink!

So, what do we hear from the White House? That Obama will invite Benjamin Netanyahu to a meeting next week to discuss Israel's security! This hard on the heels of the documentary proof that Israel is in fact a nuclear state and has so many nuclear weapons they have been trying to sell them off to countries like South Africa!

Far from being just Obama's Katrina, the oil disaster is the Federal Government's Chernobyl. We are finding out that the government inspectors in charge of oil drilling safety were spending their taxpayer-funded time watching porn on their taxpayer-funded computers while allowing the oil companies to fill out the inspection and audit reports!

If you are not angry, there is something seriously wrong with you.

Iran renews offer to help on US oil spill

Iran renews offer to help on US oil spill
Sun, 23 May 2010 16:16:25 GMT
The National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) has renewed its offer to assist the US in reining in an ecologically disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Mehran Alinejad, the head of special drilling operations at NIDC, pointed to the experience gained by Iranian experts in containing huge oil leaks during the eight-year Iraqi-imposed war in the 1980s, and said, "Iranian technical teams have had major achievements in oil well capping and the Gulf of Mexico oil rig is not a great feat in comparison."
BP officials say that the ruptured undersea well is spewing some 5,000 barrels of crude oil a day. However, analysts believe that at least 70,000 barrels of oil is spewed every day.

Israel’s Growing Insanity

By Avigail Abarbanel

I wrote this on 9th February 2009, the day before Israel’s election, after seeing an interview with Benjamin Netanyahu’s father on Israeli TV. Benjamin Netanyahu’s father—described as “sharp as a razor” at the ripe old age of 99—gave a rare interview to Amit Segel of Israel’s Channel 2 to support his son’s election campaign (Channel 2 website. 7 Feb. 2009).

At some point in the interview Professor Ben-Zion Netanyahu said, “Today we are facing plain and simple, a danger of annihilation. This is not only the ongoing existential danger to Israel, but a real danger of complete annihilation. People think that the Shoah (Holocaust) is over — but it is not, it is continuing all the time” (My translation from the Hebrew).

The agency in charge of overseeing the United States' oil reserves was plagued with gross mismanagement that in at least one case allowed the companies being inspected to fill in their own audit reports, an Inspector General's report will reportedly reveal this week.

Regulators overseeing oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico reportedly allowed oil company officials to fill in their own inspection reports. According to the internal probe being released this week, oil officials sketched out their answers in pencil and turned them over to federal oversight officials, who then traced their answers in pen.

The Next Bailout: $165B for Unions

A Democratic senator is introducing legislation for a bailout of troubled union pension funds. If passed, the bill could put another $165 billion in liabilities on the shoulders of American taxpayers.

The bill, which would put the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation behind struggling pensions for union workers, is being introduced by Senator Bob Casey, (D-Pa.), who says it will save jobs and help people.

As FOX Business Network’s Gerri Willis reported Monday, these pensions are in bad shape; as of 2006, well before the market dropped and recession began, only 6% of these funds were doing well.

Although right now taxpayers could possibly be on the hook for $165 billion, the liability could essentially be unlimited because these pensions have to be paid out until the workers die.

Cuts to Child Care Subsidy Thwart More Job Seekers

Able-bodied, outgoing and accustomed to working, Alexandria Wallace wants to earn a paycheck. But that requires someone to look after her 3-year-old daughter, and Ms. Wallace, a 22-year-old single mother, cannot afford child care.

Supreme Court to review case of Texas death row inmate who wants DNA testing

The Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether a Texas death row inmate should have access to evidence for DNA testing that he says could clear him of three murders.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The circumstantial evidence in this case appears to be very strong against the convicted defendant.

However, that being said,DNA testing should be used in all murder trials, to avoid the possibility of false conviction, imprisonment and execution.

The number of people exonerated by DNA evidence should be a colossal embarrassment for both state and federal justice systems, and the use of such testing should be a standard procedure in all murder cases.

BREAKING NEWS : Australia Expels Israeli Diplomat Over Fake Passport Affair

By political correspondent Emma Rodgers :, news

The Federal Government is expelling an Israeli diplomat after it found Israel faked Australian passports that were used in a hit on a top Hamas leader in Dubai.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith today condemned the fraud as “not the act of a friend” and a clear affront to Australia that cannot be tolerated.

Mr Smith confirmed investigations by Australian Federal Police, ASIO and ASIS showed Israel fabricated the passports of four Australians who also had Israeli nationality.

Well wouldn’t ya know it? As a result of the Korean “incident”, Hatoyama has suddenly decided to allow the U.S. to keep a key military base in Japan despite getting elected on a promise to force its closure.

requiem for the gulf

Webmaster's Commentary:

This disaster has gone way beyond Obama's Katrina. This is America's Chernobyl; a disaster that could have been avoided were it not for the corruption and connivance of the US Federal Government which allowed BP to bypass safety regulations, then attempted to cover-up the scale of the disaster.

The US Federal Government, trapped by its own mendacity of decades past, is unable to ever admit error, and too arrogant to even consider apologizing. They will, as was the case with the USSR and Chernobyl, continue to try to brazen out this disaster until all options to find a scapegoat and shift the financial liability onto the people are exhausted.

If all else fails, we can count on this government to stage a distraction, most likely a new major war, to shift the attention away from the Deepwater Horizon.

Memo to North Korea: Heads up, you are next on the list of "nations the US government has to slaughter to keep looking good in a mirror."

BP won't change dispersant used in oil spill -- for now

BP plans to continue using a controversial subsea dispersant to break up a plume of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, saying that the leading alternative could pose a risk over the long term, the EPA indicated Saturday.

The EPA issued a directive on Thursday, ordering BP to find, within 24 hours, a less toxic but equally effective chemical than its current product, Corexit 9500 -- and one that is available in sufficient quantities. The directive also gave the company 72 hours to stop applying it to the undersea gusher.

Corexit has been rated more toxic and less effective than many others on the list of 18 EPA-approved dispersants, according to testimony at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

PB had and has no plans to deal with the disasters it creates by ignoring proven standards and practices with impunity.

While a British corporation, it should be banned from any offshore drilling and/or exploration anywhere near the US.

Cleaning oil-soaked wetlands may be impossible

The gooey oil washing into the maze of marshes along the Gulf Coast could prove impossible to remove, leaving a toxic stew lethal to fish and wildlife, government officials and independent scientists said.

Officials are considering some drastic and risky solutions: They could set the wetlands on fire or flood areas in hopes of floating out the oil.

They warn an aggressive cleanup could ruin the marshes and do more harm than good. The only viable option for many impacted areas is to do nothing and let nature break down the spill.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unflipping believable.

This is precisely what deregulation in this industry has ultimately created: ecological havoc.

Lawyers say no criminal charges for AIG

The Justice Department has decided not to file criminal charges against the former head of a division at American International Group Inc. whose dealings in mortgage-related securities nearly bankrupted the company and led to a controversial government bailout, according to lawyers involved in the cases.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Imagine my (absence of) surprise; AIG's "investment in/ acquisition of" certain key people has really paid off for them.

Obama sheltered BP's Deepwater Horizon rig from regulatory requirement

Last year the Obama administration granted oil giant BP a special exemption from a legal requirement that it produce a detailed environmental impact study on the possible effects of its Deepwater Horizon drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico, an article Wednesday in the Washington Post reveals.

Federal documents show that the Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) gave BP a "categorical exclusion" on April 6, 2009 to commence drilling with Deepwater Horizon even though it had not produced the impact study required by a law known as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The report would have included probable ecological consequences in the event of a spill.

JP officials commandeer BP's hired boats in Grand Isle

He said more than 40 boats were sitting idle while he watched the oil rush into the passes.

At around 5:30 p.m., Jefferson Councilman Chris Roberts confirmed the boats have been commandeered by JP emergency managers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I guess Jefferson Parish learned their lesson about relying on the Federal Government back during Katrina. They won;t make that mistake again!

Justice Department and Congress should investigate whether BP committed perjury

The Department of Justice and congressional committees should open a preliminary inquiry about whether BP committed perjury in testimony before Congress. All video of the spill should be released publicly. Subpoenas should be issued for any information from within BP about its private estimates of the size of the spill and the dangers of the dispersants. Key BP personnel should be formally interviewed by investigators.

Members of Swedish Parliament demand security for Ship to Gaza

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt,

Swedish Parliament.

Minister Bildt:

Swedish nationals, and Swedish interests are being threatened with an act of piracy at sea which could endanger their lives, and the sovereign right of Swedish nationals and ships to pursue free and open passage on the high seas.

Sweden, always a mighty sea-going nation of men and women, which has always led the European family of nations in the pursuit of human rights and interests, ought to send an escort with this Humanitarian flotilla to ensure their safety, and protect Swedish national rights to free and open passage on the high seas.

Boycott Targets Stars From Elvis to Elton

By Nathan Guttman

“In reaction, a music industry insider confirmed that the winds could be shifting. The music executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity in light of his ongoing business ties with artists, said that in recent months he had approached more than 15 performing artists with proposals to give concerts in Israel. None had agreed. The contracts offered high levels of compensation. He called them ‘extreme, big numbers that could match any other gig.’”

Washington — It was a feather in the cap of pro-boycott activists, but for Israelis, a major setback.

With battle lines drawn across concert halls and stadiums hosting rock bands, the decision by mega-star Elvis Costello to cancel his planned concerts in Israel is being viewed as a game changer.

EPA May Not Force BP to Change Dispersants

A day after the Environmental Protection Agency gave BP 72 hours to start using a "less toxic" dispersant to help control the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, the agency told ABC News today it may allow BP to keep using the same chemicals.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What Investors are Learning From the BP Oil Spill

In the wake of our latest financial meltdown, shippers, shrimpers and tourism officials brace for the severe the economic impact resulting from an environmental crisis. Some analysts have already estimated that the spill could cost up to $3 billion and overtake the scale of Alaska’s Exxon Valdez disaster within two months. BP, the UK oil giant which owns the drilling rights for Deepwater, has seen billions of dollars wiped from its market value since the blast.

It is no wonder then that shareholders have reacted swiftly and unsympathetically. This week, BP’s investors were the latest plaintiffs to go to court over the spill, alleging the company had long put profits ahead of safety and now faces potentially billions in losses because of the ongoing disaster.

Happy friday to you too sunshine

Our government officials are complaining that BP lied. They MISLED the American people. So Obama's people sent a letter! That will show those goons at BP. I'm sure their hands will shake as they read it. And our corporate media talking heads are acting all stricken about the true scope of the disaster. Robin at Good Morning America had the about-to-cry face going, and Matt looked really disgusted.

That's our cue to cry and be disgusted now. Just follow Robin and Matt. It was important to wait over a month so that you can really cry and be really disgusted. Because now the mess is of biblical proportions. Of course had the government and Robin and Matt and friends decided to do their jobs a month ago...

Massive underwater oil plumes = no oxygen.
No oxygen in the water = dead fish and dead mammals.

And any Conservative/Republican group saying the oil companies ‘aren’t to blame’ — or trying to lessen the worth of animal life or downplay the importance of our ecosystems: TAKE A HIKE!

And they have no clue how to stop this thing, slow down this thing, they have not a single effing clue!

First Endangered Turtles Found Slathered in Oil

An endangered baby Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was discovered lathered in oil on Tuesday, May 18. This is the first rescued sea turtle known to be affected by the gargantuan oil spill in the gulf of Mexico.

The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle has been on the the Louisiana endangered species list since 1989. “In recent years, the Kemp’s population has slowly started to recover, so we hope to mitigate any decline in this species due to the oil spill,” reported Secretary Robert Barham from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

Florida Braces for Oil Spill, Impact on Tourism Industry

Floridians breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday when the Coast Guard confirmed that the dozens of tar balls found washed up near Key West this week were not from the massive BP oil spill out in the Gulf of Mexico. But it was the briefest of respites. Almost simultaneously, the Coast Guard said tendrils of the BP spill had entered the Gulf's Loop Current, which could carry it not only toward Florida's west coast but down to the Florida Keys, and perhaps on to Miami's beaches, beginning as early as next week. Said Coast Guard Rear Admiral Paul Zukunft: "It would take an act of God" to avoid that scenario.
