EU Showdown: Greece Takes on the Vampire Squid

Greece and the troika (the International Monetary Fund, the EU, and the European Central Bank) are in a dangerous game of chicken. The Greeks have been threatened with a “Cyprus-Style prolonged bank holiday” if they “vote wrong.” But they have been bullied for too long and are saying “no more.”

A return to the polls was triggered in December, when the Parliament rejected Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ pro-austerity candidate for president. In a general election, now set for January 25th, the EU-skeptic, anti-austerity, leftist Syriza party is likely to prevail. Syriza captured a 3% lead in the polls following mass public discontent over the harsh austerity measures Athens was forced to accept in return for a €240 billion bailout.

Austerity has plunged the economy into conditions worse than in the Great Depression. As Professor Bill Black observes, the question is not why the Greek people are rising up to reject the barbarous measures but what took them so long.

The Sovereign Nation of Shetland

It is obviously not in the interests of Scotland or the UK to give Shetland any more autonomy and this campaign is doomed to achieving nothing more than superficial concessions. However, now that the Crown has shown in court that it is unable to produce any proof that Shetland is part of Scotland or the UK, the onus is on our representatives to make sure that the powers they are asking for belong to those they are asking.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is a case before the Scottish Courts right now over this uss,e and it will be interesting to see how Scotland, with its recent fight to declare independence from Great Britain, handles the issue that there seems to be no legal proof that Shetland or Orkney are part of Scotland.

Of course, we have the same issue here in Hawaii.

Nye County commissioners need strengthening in protecting our land & resources against the BLM - Latest from Cliven Bundy

A notice from the federal registry reveals that the federal government is seeking even more power over the Nye County people by claiming further control of the lands and resources. Federal Register / Vol. 79, No.197 Notice, outlines plans to make much more of Nye County, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs). ACEC’s are human restricted areas.

The Nye County people soon will have less access to their lands and resources than any other people in the history of this country.

On December 1st Nye County Commissioners held a meeting discussing the federal attempt for more control over the land and resources in the county.

Due to the unanimous voice of the citizens of Nye County, the commissioners ended the meeting with a decision to draft a resolution revoking any authority the county had given the BLM and declaring that federal agencies do not have constitutional authority to administer land or resources in the State of Nevada including Nye County.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The vote is now scheduled for January 20th.

Protesting the right to protest?

After the tragic death of two NYPD police officers at the hands of a police brutality protest sympathizer, some people have taken to the streets to "protest the protesters".

These anti-protest activists display their complete lack of empathy and decency by wearing "I Can Breathe" T-shirts, mocking the devastating last words of Eric Garner.

Could the senseless murder of two NYPD officers really discredit an entire movement based on the killing of thousands of unarmed people by police hands?

Somehow I think not.

UPDATED ~~ 1st AND 2nd DEMOS OF THE YEAR IN NEW YORK ~~ IN PHOTOS

On New Year’s Day 50+ people gathered in New York City’s Grand Central Station for a “sing” to protest the police killings of Black citizens in New York City and nationally. The song began with “ I can hear my brother crying ‘I can’t breathe’” it was sung eleven times, the number of times Staten Islander Eric Gardner cried out as he was killed by a police choke hold. The only person arrested that day had made a video of the event which had gone viral. The protesters noted that District Attorneys have not indicted any police officer engaged in the racial shooting of Blacks.

Repeal The 16th Amendment Movement Gathers Steam

Firecracker sales high for New Year's celebrations

Webmaster's Commentary:

Personal fireworks are illegal in Hawaii, except for firecrackers for which you must buy a license from the local government (which costs more than the firecrackers). But while Hawaiians' ardor for the Fourth of July has cooled in recent years, this New Year's was the greatest display of illegal fireworks since 2000!

The smugglers brought in a huge amount of the banned fireworks, and the show got underway right after sunset, peaked at 11:30 and continued unabated until 1:00 AM, then started to taper off. But even as I type these words at 4:35 AM I can still hear in the distance the occasional sound of another exploding firework.

The message is clear; we have had enough of government telling us we cannot do this and we cannot do that, and last night's raucous display was a benign rejection of nanny government, with President Obama here to witness it! With some of the smuggled fireworks powerful enough to rattle the windows, I expect the Secret Service was very nervous last night, and probably did not get much sleep! :)

UK police misuse pre-charge bail to ban activists from protesting – report

UK police forces are misusing pre-charge bail by banning hundreds of protestors from attending lawful demonstrations, The Guardian newspaper has revealed. Of all bailed protesters, eighty-five percent are never charged with any crime.

Since 2008 police have arrested at least 855 people in England and Wales and then released them on pre-charge bail, setting a date to return to the police station. Until their return, those bailed were prohibited from attending any demonstration. However, 85 percent, or about 732 people, have never been charged, according to data the Guardian collected using the Freedom of Information Act.

FBI keeps lid on sniper plot to kill ‘Occupy Wall Street’ organizers

Heavily redacted FBI memos confirm that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was aware of a plot to assassinate the Houston organizers of “Occupy Wall Street,” but the agency has managed to withhold the details from the American public using the worn-out excuse that transparency compromises national security.

According to the agency’s official memos, an unnamed party or agency “planned to engage in sniper attacks against protestors in Houston, Texas, if deemed necessary… [Redacted] planned to gather intelligence against the leaders of the protest groups and obtain photographs, then formulate a plan to kill the leadership via suppressed sniper rifles.”

Protesters in New York City plan to “shut down” 5th Avenue, a main shopping area in Manhattan, tonight. The call to do so happens after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio asked for any protests to stop until both recently murdered NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu are buried this weekend.

According to reports, The Answer Coalition said it would go through with the march, which it says was planned long before Saturday night’s murders. They denounced the mayor for asking for a moratorium on protests, saying that would be an “outrageous” attempt to chill free speech.

RABBINICAL TAUNTING OF THE SEASON

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach taunted a crowd of human rights protesters in front of the seemingly closed and emptied flagship Leviev diamond store on Madison Avenue. Leviev’s companies have built thousands of Israeli settlement homes and have been accused of abusing and torturing Angolan diamond miners.

Boteach stood in front of the empty Leviev store and began shouting. “Israel,” “Down with Hamas,” “Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East,” “Down with the Palestinians.” He suddenly stopped and complained that he was being videotaped. Police told Boteach to leave as he was drowned out by chants of, “How fancy, how pretty, Leviev out of New York City.” Boteach was accompanied by a young man wearing a scarf for the notoriously racist Beitar Jerusalem football team. Boteach has expressed his support for Hebron’s notoriously violent and racist settlers.

Houston P.D. Orders All Officers Turn Off Body Cameras During Protest

“We’re going to go ahead and turn off the personal video devices going forward, so be sure all officers have them turned off when engaging the protesters.” The words cut through me and chilled my spine as I sat, helplessly handcuffed in the back of a Houston Police cruiser after being arrested in the midst of a protest.

As an activist who has been around the block a few times, I knew that little would endanger a crowd more than a crowd of officers who had just received an order from higher up to disable their own personal accountability.

NSA Firefoxed: Mozilla team-up with Tor to improve internet privacy

The internet browser Mozilla is teaming up with Tor to give internet users greater security online. The new Polaris project is designed to combat internet censorship and make NSA like intrusion’s a thing of the past.

Edward Snowden’s revelations concerning the extent of the National Security Agency’s spying on the general public, hit computer and internet enthusiasts hard. A poll conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the internet company Mozilla last month, found that three quarters of those surveyed feel that their personal information on the web is less secure than it was one year ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The comment in the article about the NSA not being able to find a TOR users identity is not entirely accurate. Recently it has come to light that if a user has the flash player installed on their computer, malicious code inside a flash object can detect the source IP of the request despite the onion network, which is why the current implementation of TOR recommends users not have the flash player installed. However I think that Mozilla and TOR will close that exploit (if they have not already done so).

As a general rule, everyone ought to be using anonymity tools and strong encryption, even if you do not really have anything to hide, to jam the NSA with added workload and confuse them as to who they should be looking at. For your local data protection or small-group communications, I strongly recommend investing the time to develop your own encryption methods using the code snippets in the NSA Challenge page as examples.

A multi-racial, multi-ethnic group of people stood in the cold for 2 hours holding signs, reading the names of victims, and telling their stories to all who would listen. To further decry the long history of American racism, the names of people lynched, like Emmett Till, were included in the signs and recitation.

Cops mock Garner with #WeCanBreathe tweet

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department attracted scrutiny over the weekend for a tweet that seemed to mock Eric Garner, the black man killed by New York City police in July by means many, including protesters nationwide, have deemed excessive.

In response to criticism over arrests made during protests in Indianapolis over a grand jury’s decision not to indict a New York officer for Garner’s death, Kendale Adams, a public information officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), tweeted Thursday evening from the IMPD’s Twitter feed “…communication with those involved was peaceful and appropriate but some opted for arrest by #choice, #WeCanBreathe.”

The hashtag #WeCanBreathe is a reference to Garner’s last words: Video of the incident shows that Garner said “I can’t breathe” 11 times as he was put into a chokehold by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo.

Gangs of New York: Post-Garner NYPD on Watch for Militant Blacks ‘Preparing to Shoot On-Duty Police Officers’

While outrage continues to brew over the non-indictment of the officer that choked Eric Garner to death for selling “loose” untaxed cigarettes on the streets of New York, the NYPD is digging in, as the above New York Daily News image suggests.

Amid anti-police sentiments, the NYPD has claimed that members of the “Black Guerilla Family” are threatening to shoot on-duty police officers in New York. Under the NYC night sky at 6:30 pm, 10,000 (police report) people gathered at Foley Square to protest the failure of the Grand Jury to indict the killer policeman of Eric Gardner, a Black resident from Staten Island . The demonstration was called by the NYC Civil Liberties Union and The Center For Constitutional Rights. The meeting was peaceful, but participants were angry. The meeting represented the wide range of ethnic and racial population in NYC, from the young to oldsters. “BLACK LIFE MATTERS” and “I CAN’T BREATHE” were the refrains which filled Foley Square as well as “NO PEACE WITH OUT JUSTICE” and “HANDS UP DON’T SHOOT” (referring to Ferguson Mo). Within hours people spontaneously began to leave the Square to circulate through the city. Local street protests continued to the wee hours of the morning. The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges were closed down. The Holland Tunnel was closed for forty minutes.

Protests erupt in wake of chokehold death decision

Protesters are flooding the streets of New York and elsewhere -- chanting, blocking traffic and demanding change after the decision not to indict in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.

Demonstrators staged a "die-in" in Brooklyn, New York, late Thursday. They lay in the middle of Atlantic Avenue. An eerie silence descended as the protesters, who had cardboard coffins, stopped chanting.

The march was being led by three mothers, all of whom had lost a son to police. Protesters stopped other marchers from getting ahead of the women. They wanted them to walk in front.

"I'm so happy that people of all cultures, all ethnicities, came out to show their love and support, and basically we have to make a change because they're killing us off," a protester told CNN.
Garner video: What the grand jury saw

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yes, this verdict was an absolute travesty of justice, and needs to be addressed through the courts.

But we also need to have a national conversation about how police are trained in this country, with national standards on outlawing the excessive use of force in the process of arresting ANYONE.

Unfortunately, the "Israelification" of American police is not helping to moderate the situation.

As reported at rawstory.com in December of 2011:

The extreme militarization of American police forces has been brought to public attention by the tactics employed against Occupy protesters, which often appear more appropriate to counter-terrorism operations than to the control of non-violent protest. According to investigative journalist Max Blumenthal, however, the proper term for this ruthless suppression of dissent should be “Israelification.” In an article which begins with examples of American police training alongside Israeli security forces, Blumenthal writes, “Having been schooled in Israeli tactics perfected during a 63 year experience of controlling, dispossessing, and occupying an indigenous population, local police forces have adapted them to monitor Muslim and immigrant neighborhoods in US cities. Meanwhile, former Israeli military officers have been hired to spearhead security operations at American airports and suburban shopping malls, leading to a wave of disturbing incidents of racial profiling, intimidation, and FBI interrogations of innocent, unsuspecting people. The Israeli influence has been particularly strong in New York City where, Blumenthal writes, “under the leadership of Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, ties between the NYPD and Israel have deepened by the day. Kelly embarked on his first trip to Israel in early 2009 to demonstrate his support for Israel’s ongoing assault on the Gaza Strip. … Kelly returned to Israel the following year to speak at the Herziliya Conference, an annual gathering of neoconservative security and government officials who obsess over supposed ‘demographic threats.’ … Back in New York, the NYPD set up a secret ‘Demographics Unit’ designed to spy on and monitor Muslim communities around the city.” Not only dissidents but even ordinary criminals may be treated as terrorists under the Israel model, which can also include the routine use of torture. Karen Greenberg, director of Fordham School of Law’s Center on National Security, told Blumenthal, “After 9/11 we reached out to the Israelis on many fronts and one of those fronts was torture. The training in Iraq and Afghanistan on torture was Israeli training. There’s been a huge downside to taking our cue from the Israelis and now we’re going to spread that into the fabric of everyday American life? It’s counter-terrorism creep. And it’s exactly what you could have predicted would have happened.” .

This country does not need more techniques in torture, terror, or causing death to unarmed suspects; it needs a way to teach police how to de-escalate a situation, to the point where, if the suspect is unarmed, that no violence has to be used.

Otherwise, and I shudder to think of it, there will be more Fergusons, and more New Yorks, in terms of killing of unarmed, minority suspects.

We can stop this trend, but it will take enormous good will and hard work on the part of all police departments in this country, all community outreach volunteers, and the courts.

A group of Ferguson protesters were met Thursday afternoon with Confederate flags, racist symbols, and gunfire as they marched through a pair of rural Missouri towns.

Counter-protesters, including children, shouted racial slurs and carried signs urging the marchers to “go home,” reported the Columbia Missourian.

Residents of Gerald and Rosebud, where the marchers arrived about noon, set up a display of fried chicken, a melon, and a 40-ounce beer bottle in the street.

Some of the counter-protesters wore improvised Ku Klux Klan hoods, and they set up homemade signs supporting law enforcement and the grand jury’s decision not to charge Darren Wilson in the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This ABSOLUTELY reeks of spook central psyops.

To the peaceful protestors wanting to get their voices heard, please, do not allow these buffoons or any others to incite you to violence; that is precisely what the Federal government would love to have happen here, nationally, to give them the excuse to suspend the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and impose martial law.

That is ABSOLUTELY THE LAST THING we need to happen right now.

Russell Brand joins London anti-eviction march against 'profit-greedy' US developer

Residents of an east London housing estate journeyed to the HQ of a US investment firm on Monday that plans to evict almost 100 families from their homes. Some 400 campaigners subsequently marched to No. 10 to hand a petition to PM David Cameron.

Grandparents, parents and children from Hoxton's New Era estate travelled across London on Monday in a fleet of buses to Westbrook Partners’ offices in Mayfair. The Day Freedom Ends

In 1776, the Americans had a wonderful new idea for a republic in which each state (a common word for “country” in those days) would exist independently of the others, whilst a federal government would be in place to provide a few additional services, such as the creation of a common currency and joint protection from foreign invasion.

Unfortunately, those who sought to be all powerful were at work almost immediately, hoping to increase the power of the federal government to the point that the United States would be run as a conglomerate. By 1860, this had already reached the stage that the president denied the right of states to leave the Union.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And, it should be noted, the European Union is doing the same to Europe, while above them the United Nations is trying to do the same thing to the entire world.

MY TEN YEAR OLD SON WANTS ANSWERS ABOUT FERGUSON

My son wants me to reassure him, and tell him that of course Darren Wilson will go to jail. At 10 years old, he can feel deep in his bones how wrong it was for the police to kill Michael Brown. “There will be a trial, at least — right, Mom?” My son is asking me a simple question, and I know the answer.

Ferguson protesters target Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: Activists plan to stop New York extravaganza

Demonstrators in New York who have been protesting the grand jury decision in Ferguson this week are plotting a revolt against the Thanksgiving Day Parade to 'make people stop and listen' and 'make history'.

The hashtag #StopTheParade set social media on fire on Wednesday night, after thousands took over the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn on Tuesday after police officer Darren Wilson escaped charges over the shooting death of Michael Brown.

The New York Post is reporting that those protests - in which 10 of an estimated 3,000 were arrested - have inspired a bigger plan to use the spotlight surrounding the parade to push what they say is injustice.

"People need to remain calm and be peaceful," said Williams.

Protesters have a united front, encouraging others to "link up and stay late." Cleveland Police are along the perimeter, letting it play out. Police have called in a sheriff's bus, among other units, in case of mass arrests.

From Midwest to Both Coasts, Fury Boils Over

Months of anger and frustration, in the end, led only to more anger and frustration.

Shops were looted and burned on Ferguson’s main street. There were smoke bombs, tear gas, thrown rocks and random gunshots. In Ferguson, the aftermath of the shooting death of Michael Brown was almost as bitter and hollow as his killing itself.

Brien Redmon, 31, stood in the cold watching a burning police car and sporadic looting after the announcement that there would be no indictments for Mr. Brown’s death at 18.

“This is not about vandalizing,” he said. “This is about fighting a police organization that doesn’t care about the lives they serve.”

With no indictment, chaos fills Ferguson streets

Chaos returned to the streets of Ferguson after a grand jury declined to indict a white police officer in the death of Michael Brown - a decision that enraged protesters who set fire to buildings and cars and looted businesses in the area where the unarmed, black 18-year-old was fatally shot.

Monday night's destruction appeared to be much worse than last summer's protests, with at least a dozen businesses badly damaged or destroyed. Authorities reported hearing hundreds of gunshots, which for a time prevented fire crews from fighting the flames.

How Police Use Military Tactics to Quash Dissent

As we wait for the grand jury verdict on whether to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the killing of Michael Brown, schools in Ferguson are preparing to close, the police are stocked up on riot weapons and white supremacists are pledging to kill. A sand-colored, mine-resistant military vehicle was seen parked in front a local Dairy Queen. Protesters are organized and eschewing violence for clever forms of civil disobedience, but know they will likely face violence: Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has already declared a state of emergency in Ferguson.

Armored trucks in the street and a fear of mayhem are more common abroad, but Ferguson shows they now have a place in the suburbs of America. Police have militarized from to boots to brainstem.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It appears that at both the Federal and State level, the government wants violence in Ferguson, to viciously stomp down with extreme prejudice, and show the world the the US striving to become "number one" when it comes to police brutality, particularly against minorities.

It is very sad to me that the crisis brought on by the killing of Michael Brown cannot become an opportunity for the police to change their institutional culture and reach out to the citizens of this community, which would be the best possible outcome.

Unfortunately, no matter the Grand Jury's decision, I would almost be willing to bet that there will be violence, not only in this town, but in other densely-packed urban areas where joblessness and poverty are rife.

And why?!? Because the good jobs which used to be the bedrock of the middle class in this country have been outsourced/offshored to the cheapest labor pools possible on this planet.

And it hasn't mattered much who is in office, as this development has unfolded over the last 30 years, because those same executives which are doing this are contributing generously to their candidates of choice, who have now become representative of corporations, not at all of We the People.

I sincerely believe that most people, given the opportunity, will work when it is possible; it is just that there are no jobs for them to go to, due to offshoring/outsourcing.

I can never condone violence, as an answer to any societal problem; but I can understand how it comes about, out of intense frustration that absolutely nothing is working properly in your life.

And being unemployed, and barely surviving on public assistance, have to be frustrating in the extreme.

And the longer one is out of a job, the more prejudicial companies are about hiring that person.

The NAFTA Connection: The Role of “Free” Trade in Mexico’s Tragic Travails

Mexico’s liberalization of trade and finance, with help from the world’s largest banks, has enabled drug traffickers and the corrupt political establishment.

Many in the police, the judiciary and even the military are intimidated, inadequately trained, and/or corrupt. The influence of drug money within all three major political parties is now taken for granted…

On a positive note, the problem of endemic political corruption in Mexico is now finally getting the attention it deserves, both inside and outside Mexico’s borders. However, corruption tells only part of Mexico’s tragic sage. There is another no less important, but generally ignored, factor in the rise to dominance of Mexico’s drug cartels: the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

WATCH: Police in riot gear arrest California Walmart workers during sit-in over wages, firings

Police decked out in riot gear arrested Walmart workers and supporters after they blocked an intersection in front of a Pico Rivera, California store Thursday evening.

KTLA reports dozens of protestors were taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies wearing riot helmets and holding batons, several hours after the sit-in began, drawing hundreds protesting working conditions at the retail giant.

The sit-in followed a work stoppage earlier in the day at the company’s Crenshaw Boulevard store in Baldwin Hills.

Employees in Baldwin Hills store stopped work and sat on the floor with tape over the mouths reading ‘strike,’ while holding signs saying, “Walmart stop the illegal threats.”

Walmart is currently under investigation for firing and threatening employee activists.

Activists have been setting up protests at Walmart stores across the country, posting pictures on twitter at #walmartstrikers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported at abcnews.com in 2010:

By Ed Smith's math, the CEO of Walmart earns more in an hour than his employees will earn in a year. Smith, an alderman in Chicago, presented posters at a city council meeting showing that Walmart CEO Michael Duke's $35 million salary, when converted to an hourly wage, worked out to $16,826.92. By comparison, at a Walmart store planned for the Windy City's Pullman neighborhood, new employees to be paid $8.75 an hour would gross $13,650 a year. Smith's numbers could be a bit off. Equilar, an executive compensation research firm, calculates that Duke earned just south of $20 million in 2009 and $28 million in 2008, not counting millions of dollars in potential performance awards. But the alderman argued that there's still a "sad" contrast between Duke's compensation and the wages of his employees.

Apparently, when police departments have their cars decaled with the phrase "to protect and serve" on their police cars, they are only talking about the interests of the corporate monied, and the one percenters.

The decent jobs, which used to be the cornerstone of a healthy middle class in this country, have been, and continue to be, offshored and outsourced to the cheapest labor pools available.

And please notice that it doesn't matter if the administration is Democratic or Republican: the corporate job flight continues at a stunningly brisk pace.

Ferguson braces for protests ahead of Darren Wilson grand jury decision

Authorities and residents in the US city of Ferguson are bracing for a decision about whether a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teen should be prosecuted.

A grand jury is looking at the racially charged shooting, in which white police officer Darren Wilson shot 18-year-old Michael Brown. The jury is expected to announce its findings any time between mid- to late-November.

“Quite simply, we must and will be fully prepared,” Missouri Governor Jay Nixon cautioned at a news conference on Tuesday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

To the people of Ferguson, I counsel calm, however this verdict comes down.

Calm, and non-violence are the two hardest values to embrace, particularly when there is a police culture of violence with which you have to contend.

One of my great heroes in this country from the 20th century is Dr. Martin Luther King, who stood at the forefront of civil rights battles, before he was cut down in an assassination.

He accomplished what he accomplished in this country with complete dignity, and non-violence, demonstrating to the world the horrific violence displayed against him, and his African-American brothers and sisters. And ultimately, this country's leadership recoiled in shame, unable to control the narrative, and integration became the law of the land.

And to ALL the faith communities in Ferguson, now is the time to reach out to ALL of the community to counsel a peaceful response to this verdict, and I will tell you why.

The Federal government would love nothing more than to have a relatively small violent protest that it could put down easily with a mighty show of military suppression.

And please, with the current President, please take as hard a look as you can as to "the content of his character", as demonstrated by the plight of so many Americans (including African Americans) find themselves in, through no fault of their own, due to the offshoring and outsourcing of jobs, which continues at lighting speed, under this administration. As reported at wsws.org in July 2013:

The increases in child poverty continued well after the Obama administration officially declared that the recession had ended. The recession officially lasted for a year and a half, from December 2007 to June 2009. But after a similar period of eighteen months of “recovery” child poverty was still climbing rapidly. This was so even as the national unemployment rate registered a gradual decline. The report ties lack of family income to two related economic indicators exacerbated by the continuing economic crisis: the availability of regular employment and housing costs. One-third of American children live in households without secure employment, i.e., no parent has full-time, year-round employment, up from 27 percent in 2008. Part of this is due to the growing trend of replacing full-time jobs with part-time work.

Do no lot at this President as a person: look at him through the policies he has embraced, such as the continuance of offshoring and outsourcing of jobs, to the detriment, and suffering, of the American people.

At the end of the day, his faux populism notwithstanding, President Obama is no less a complete tool of the monied, corporate, banking class than was his predecessor. That is the simple, unvarnished truth of the situation.

And to the Federal government, when the verdict comes down, I would counsel restraint.

Ferguson isn't the only flashpoint in this country of angry, dispossessed people who are fed up, and have had enough.

Massive suppression in Ferguson may well become a "tickling of the dragon's tail" which you may not, ultimately, be able to control.

Fury over Mexico student ‘massacre’ boils over into street battles

Mexicans furious at the presumed massacre of 43 students torched the ruling party’s Guerrero state headquarters and briefly took a police commander prisoner on Tuesday as growing protests rocked President Enrique Pena Nieto’s government.

Riot police clashed with protesters in running street battles as black smoke billowed from the white two-story building of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the southern state’s capital Chilpancingo.

Violent protests have erupted in Mexico since authorities said on Friday that the gang ‘hitmen’ confessed to murdering the students and incinerating their bodies after corrupt police handed over the 43 young men in September in Guerrero.
Some 1,000 people, led by students and the radical CETEG teachers union, marched in Chilpancingo before throwing stones and firebombs at police.

Three officers and two journalists, including a photographer working for AFP, were injured after being struck by rocks, said a civil protection official.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Although as a Christian pacifist, I abhor violence, that does not mean that I do not understand how it happens, as a result of governmental corruption and torture.

The sad reality for Mexican citizens is that their government is owned by the cartels, period, end of discussion.

And what might end this would be a complete decriminalization of all drugs, in small amounts, for personal use.

The model in Portugal has been very encouraging in this direction.

As reported in huffingtonpost.com in July of this year, the World Health Organization calls for decriminalizing personal drug use:

The 159-page report, which focused primarily on HIV prevention and care worldwide, included a brief section discussing "good practice recommendations concerning decriminalization." In it, WHO offered the following recommendations: Countries should work toward developing policies and laws that decriminalize injection and other use of drugs and, thereby, reduce incarceration. Countries should work toward developing policies and laws that decriminalize the use of clean needles and syringes (and that permit NSPs [needle and syringe programs]) and that legalize OST [opioid substitution therapy] for people who are opioid-dependent.Countries should ban compulsory treatment for people who use and/or inject drugs. Actual decriminalization is not without precedent either. Some countries have begun to consider it for some or all illicit drugs. In 2001, Portugal did decriminalize all drugs and has seen a dramatic decline in drug abuse since.

But of course, such action would be logical.... and put the cartels out of business, with their money drying up, almost instantaneously.

Catalan Vote: Disturbance in the Farce

The smiles did not extend to Madrid, where until the very moment the ballots opened there were still thinking the Catalans would not have the collons to defy god, king and country. In fact, on Sunday morning at 9AM the crypto fascist party UPyD requested the Barcelona weekend judge to stop the vote, confiscate the ballots and arrest the table officers and political instigators using force if necessary. The judge delicately told them to shove off, saying that the proposed measures were disproportionate to the situation. And so the vote was held in peace, with the only exception of Girona, where a group of skinheads bumrushed a voting point, kicked the ballot box to the ground and, in a textbook case of instant karma, were smote by the violent gentlemen of a local rugby team which just happened to be there voting. President Flim-Flam Leads Dems to Midterm Massacre

Tuesday’s electoral meltdown was just blowback from the many rank and file Dems who were either too mad to vote the party ticket or too distraught to even drag themselves to the polling booths. They hate Wall Street, the media, the do-nothing Congress, and the sell-out-loser Democrats. They want change and they’re willing to move further to the right or left to get it.

That should be fertile ground for even the most fainthearted revolutionary. There’s no reason why the public’s frustration and can’t be channeled into more productive activity, like a general strike, a mass exodus from the two-party duopoly, or a thundering march on the Capital.
