Algerian army calls on Bouteflika to be declared 'unfit to rule'

The head of Algeria's army, Ahmed Gaid Salah, on Tuesday called on Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to be declared "unfit to rule" during a televised address on state media outlets.

"We must find a way out of this crisis immediately, within the constitutional framework," Salah said.

Salah made his comments as thousands of Algerians gathered in Algiers and continued protests against Bouteflika on Tuesday, calling on the ageing president - who has rarely been seen in public since he suffered a stroke in 2013 that many believe have left him incapable of performing his duties - to resign from his position.

Bouteflika, who is a veteran of Algeria's war of independence, initially submitted his candidacy to run for a fifth term in presidential elections scheduled for April. However, he later announced he would no longer run, but that elections were postponed.
