THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"Are we at last brought to such an humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our own defense? Where is the difference between having our arms under our own possesion and under our own direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?" -- Patrick Henry

Westminster terror attack: Driver arrested after car mows down cyclists and ploughs into Parliament barrier

A terror suspect arrested after a car crashed into a barrier at the Houses of Parliament at high speed is not believed to be known to the security services, police have said.

At least three people were injured when the silver Ford Fiesta hit a group of cyclists and pedestrians waiting for traffic lights to change. Rooftop camera footage shows the car mounting a pavement on the wrong side of the road before, witnesses said, it travelled at up to 50mph for around 40 metres (130ft) and hit a bollard.

Bombshell Pennsylvania report details 300 priests who sexually molested more than 1,000 children over 70 years

Pennsylvania officials have released a landmark grand jury report that identifies more than 300 'predator priests' who molested children in six dioceses.

The grand jury says its investigation of clergy sexual abuse identified more than 1,000 child victims.

The grand jury report released Tuesday says that number comes from records in six Roman Catholic dioceses.

The grand jury says it believes the 'real number' of abused children might be 'in the thousands' since some records were lost and victims were afraid to come forward.

Cooperate Or Die: In Private Meeting, Top Facebook Exec Threatened News Outlets

During a closed-door and off-the-record meeting last week, top Facebook executive Campbell Brown reportedly warned news publishers that refusal to cooperate with the tech behemoth's efforts to "revitalize journalism" will leave media outlets dying "like in a hospice."

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is why the independent media is really important right now, and so worthy of support, both informationally and financially.

Because Brown's call to "revitalize journalism", is nothing more than a not so subtle, in your face threat, that the presstitutes and whorespondents can be broken, forever, by not adhering completely to the narrative of the nation-state, and any countering argument to that narrative must be ground down into the dirt, permanently and immediately.

So no, Mr. Brown: WRH refuses to do this, and we have suffered intensely from the financial, social, and intellectual stigmas associated with not carrying the Unhinged, Surveilled State of Amerika's water for it.

Yes, the siren song of the money, and opportunities available after becoming "the US Deep State's bitch" can still be heard, sotto voce; but just like listening to the song of a mermaid, trying to lure a sailor to their death, when you understand how completely expendable ordinary working people are to the inner workings of the monied who rule this country, the ethical costs of such a switch in perspective, are simply too great to bear.

Twitter To "Suspend Accounts For Trying To Evade Suspension"

Having seemingly distracted the world, briefly, from being caught 'shadowbanning' conservatives (or should we say "using quality filters"), by outright-banning other right-leaning individuals (Alex Jones and Peter van Buren forever; and Candace Owen and Ron Paul Institute's Daniel McAdams temporarily), it appears Twitter's CEO Jack Dorsey has a cunning plan for purging the rest of the world's naysayers from his platform.

Yemen war: Mass funeral held for children killed in bus attack

Thousands of people have gathered in Yemen for the funerals of dozens of children killed in a Saudi-led coalition attack on a bus last week.

The mass burial took place in Saada, a northern stronghold of Houthi rebels.

The coalition initially said its actions were "legitimate", but later said it would probe "collateral damage".

Now it looks like maybe, one tenth of one percent follow the scientific method.” In particular, Armstrong talked about the proactive “alarmism” some scientists encourage regarding man-made climate change. He argued that scientists are more politically motivated or perhaps too focused on their own career advancement to want to publish accurate data.

City Forces Group to Remove Anarchy Symbol, Labeling It “Hate Material”

An anarchist group in Hamilton, a city in the Canadian province of Ontario, has been ordered by officials to remove an anarchy symbol from its headquarters. The officials have declared that the symbol is “hate material similar to the swastika” despite police distancing themselves from the city’s position.

“The anarchist symbol is considered hate material by the City of Hamilton and Hamilton Police Services and as such, must be removed,” city spokesperson Marie Fitzpatrick wrote in an email to CBC News.

However, despite the claim by city officials that the anarchy symbol represents “hate material,” local police disputed that label. The symbol “does not meet the threshold of a hate crime,” Const. Jerome Stewart of the Hamilton police said according to CBC News.

Korean Leaders Agree to New September Summit in Pyongyang

Following two hours of meetings between top North and South Korean officials on Monday, the two sides announced that an agreement has been reached to hold a third summit in September. The summit will be in Pyongyang, though the exact date has not been announced.

Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in first met in April in the demilitarized zone, and then held a more informal summit in late May. At the time, officials on both sides suggested more summits were likely in the future.

As with the late May summit, this one comes amid signs that US-North Korea diplomacy is stumbling. South Korea has been advising the US on how to make progress, though often the US has rejected proposals that involve making any concessions.

North Korea is known to want a peace deal ending the 1950 Korean War, and the US is seen as resistant to the idea. The South Korean government has been pretty open about wanting peace too, however, and may try to get the process moving irrespective of US reticence.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The one thing both Koreas should do, and immediately, is reunify, putting an end to US threats and meddling in the region.

Once Korea is reunified, the US government cannot but treat it as a sovereign, undivided country, unless it characterizes the whole place 'a newly minted rogue nation.", and go after it as a whole entity.

And the optics on such a move would be horrifically awful.

The UN gives an unconditional green light for shifting “rescued” to Europe

The global establishment goes out of its way to increase the number of immigrants in Europe. YouTube to add “fact check” propaganda messages to MMR vaccine videos in latest Orwellian attempt to override reality

The move comes after YouTube announced this spring that it will place descriptions taken from Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia alongside videos about topics that tend to attract conspiracy theories, such as the Oklahoma City bombing and the moon landing. Although YouTube has not shared a full list of topics that will be given this treatment, some of the topics identified in a post to its administrators include global warming, Dulce Base, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Kecksburg UFO incident, the 1980 Camarate air accident, and the MMR vaccine.

The company has not notified the users who originally uploaded the videos in question that they will bear these propaganda messages. It is not clear why YouTube is lumping the MMR vaccine’s proven link to autism in the same category as conspiracy theories, but given their track record, politics almost certainly played a big role.

Russian Warship Said To Locate And Track US 'Stealth' Nuclear Sub For Hours

A major Russian daily newspaper on Friday revealed a classified incident wherein a Russian battleship located and tracked a 'stealth' US nuclear powered submarine.

It reportedly took place last April, near in time to when the US, UK, and France launched massive strikes from air and sea on targets in and around Damascus in response to the alleged government chemical attack on Douma.

The popular Russian-language daily Izvestia newspaper revealed the story, citing a source in the Russian Navy. While not itself state-owned, the historic newspaper was in the past owned by Gazprom prior to being sold, and has long had close ties to the government.

Currently it's impossible to independently verify the claims, but if true, it would be of monumental importance as it follows recent statements by Pentagon officials sounding the alarm over the rapid pace of Russian and Chinese advances in defense technology, including things like hypersonic weapons.

Webmaster's Commentary:

US Dropped Mutual Assurances of Non-Meddling from Helsinki Declaration – Reports

The United States rejected a Russian offer to include mutual assurances of non-interference in polls from a proposed joint declaration at the Helsinki summit, media said.

Russia suggested adding a clause that would call cyberattacks on critical infrastructure – power grids, water pumps, banks and hospitals – unacceptable, three Russian and US officials told the Kommersant newspaper.

Sources said Moscow had proposed "joint measures to prevent the use of cyberspace to destabilize internal political processes, including elections." The United States initially agreed to sign the joint declaration but then rowed back on it.

Antifa Vows “Bullets” For Political Enemies; Media Ignores Threat

Far left group’s open incitement to violence gets zero press coverage.

The mainstream media completely failed to report on Antifa members in DC yesterday, some of whom went on to assault police officers, carrying a banner which openly advertised their intention to put bullets in their political enemies.

Numerous video clips and photos show Antifa members carrying a large black banner which reads, “It takes a bullet to bash a fash.”

In another clip, leftists are asked what they would do if they met President Trump.

“I would murder him,” answered one, while another said, “We’d have to do him like Gaddafi.”

I asked leftist progressives outside the White House today what they would do if they met President Trump.
Their answers:
•"I would murder him."
•"We'd have to do him like Gaddafi."
•"If I get a chance to fuck him up I would."
•"Beat his ass."

At 69 years of age, and a Christian composer, conductor, and pacifist activist, I am thoroughly astonished to see how far the left in this country is willing to play out the violence card.

And in looking this story up, because in clicking the title (and from a lot of resources) I got a "404 Error"; item not found.

Hungary: Sex is biologically determined, the concept of gender, as ‘social sex’ is nonsense

The issue of gender studies was not on the agenda of the government’s meeting, because there are much more important topics, a government source told ATV.hu on Monday.

Last week, Hungarian universities were given 24 hours to give their response to the plan of the Ministry of Human Capacities, according to which it will become impossible for new students to enrol in gender studies.

As we reported before, Two universities are concerned: Hungary’s biggest state-funded university ELTE, and the Central European University, founded by George Soros.

If the amendment becomes official, it will mean that nobody can attend gender studies courses in Hungary and get a degree in the subject. HVG.hu notes that CEU offers both Hungarian and American degrees, the amendment will not affect the latter.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And just what kind of a job does one get with a degree in gender studies?

Italian debt; a financial disaster waiting to happen

The new Italian government will increase public spending and public debt. It promised to reduce taxes, introduce basic security and reform pensions. Italy’s Northern League’s leader Mateo Salvini surged in the polls and the party is now the strongest in Italy. A couple of years ago it was inconceivable that this regional group could become Italy’s leading political party. We should expect more to come. As the saying goes, it just could not happen till it happened. The financial establishments in North European countries like Germany and the Netherlands assume that the politicians of M5S and Lega Nord will follow the Greek script and will backtrack on their promises. But Mateo Salvini and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte know that if they do not live up to the expectation of the voters, they will be voted out of office.

Giuseppe Conte’s new government and his policy towards the influx of migrants have been defied by the German NGOs whose ships – the Sea Watch and the Sea-Eye – have purposefully ignored the rules that are to be binding in the Mediterranean: the body of water has been divided into areas for which respective – Italian, Maltese and Libyan – maritime authorities are responsible. Hence, NGOs have no business to operate there.

Yet NGOs are above law, and so they are on their mission irrespective of everything and anything. Two recent events with the Sea Watch and the Sea-Eye are case in point.

Investigative Journalist Found Dead in D.C. Hotel Room Weeks After Reporting Bill Clinton to FBI & DHS for Allegedly Raping Boy

Investigative Journalist Jen Moore was found dead in a suburban Washington D.C. hotel room Monday, according to police and shocked and distraught friends and colleagues.

Moore died of an apparent seizure. Police are closely investigating the cause of death after former FBI Agent Robyn Gritz, a friend of Moore’s, made inquiries with homicide detectives Monday afternoon in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Preliminary reports from police said the death was not the result of suicide.

Moore’s body was found by employees at the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Washington, D.C. East – in Capitol Heights, Maryland. The investigation is ongoing. An autopsy had not been scheduled as of late Monday.

Moore, an advocate who investigated abused and trafficked children, had been in the process of investigating allegations by a 26-year-old man that — as a young boy — he was sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton and pimped out at private sex parties attended by other D.C. elites.

How The US Government Legally Stole Millions From Kim Dotcom

About a month ago we covered the basics of the lawsuit by which the US government was seeking to keep pretty much all of Kim Dotcom’s assets, despite the fact that Dotcom himself hasn’t been tried — and, in fact, it hasn’t even been determined if he can be extradited to the United States (a country he’s never visited). This week, that case took another step, with the judge, Liam O’Grady, who had already ruled that Kim Dotcom could be considered a “fugitive,” more or less finalizing the theft of Dotcom’s assets by declaring a default judgment in favor of the US. This isn’t the end of the process (not by a longshot), but it highlights just how the US government can use some ridiculous procedures to steal millions in assets from someone who hasn’t been shown to be guilty of anything.

Facebook's anonymous censors take down Latin America's Telesur, and nothing can stop them

When Facebook decides to censor, there is absolutely nothing to stop them. For the second time, left-leaning Latin American news network Telesur has had its Facebook page removed, with no explanation given.

When Telesur's page was first taken down in January this year, no explanation was given then either. 'Kafkaesque' is an overused phrase, but here it is absolutely valid. Telesur is being punished, yet no one will actually tell them why. Here is a description of Kafka's The Trial: "it tells the story of Josef K., a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime revealed neither to him nor to the reader." Sound familiar?

This meeting raises serious questions concerning whether Christopher Steele shared information from his ‘dossier’ with Bruce Ohr, prompting the FBI to launch Crossfire Hurricane.

In three articles for The Hill last week, investigative journalist John Solomon revealed previously undisclosed text and email discussions between former Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr and former MI6 agent and Spygate dossier author Christopher Steele. Solomon’s reporting also uncovered notes Ohr took summarizing discussions he had with Steele’s boss at Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson, about the Russia “collusion” investigation.

In isolation, the details revealed in Solomon’s must-read exposés are troubling. But when considered in conjunction with information related to the Russia investigation the government previously released, this new information is potentially devastating, because it indicates that, notwithstanding claims to the contrary, the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched operation Crossfire Hurricane based on Steele’s Clinton-funded opposition research.

The Real Reasons Peter Strzok was Fired from the FBI

There are certainly more than just the anti-Trump text messages sent by former FBI Special Agent Peter Strzok that led the second in command at the FBI to fire him. FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich actually overruled a recommendation by the bureau’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to suspend and demote the former senior agent, and instead, terminated Strzok on Friday.

Former FBI special agents, some of whom worked with OPR for years, said they agree with Bodwich’s decision. They told SaraACarter.com that the system is broken and Bodwich had no other choice but to step in and fire Strzok. They say political leanings, friendships and dual systems of justice inside OPR have plagued how cases regarding FBI agents are adjudicated and handled.

2016 Trump Tower Meeting Looks Increasingly Like a Setup by Russian and Clinton Operatives

The June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between high-ranking members of the Republican presidential campaign staff and a Russian lawyer with Kremlin ties remains the cornerstone of claims that Donald Trump colluded with Russia to steal the election.

A growing body of evidence, however, indicates that the meeting may have been a setup -- part of a broad effort to tarnish the Trump campaign involving Hillary Clinton operatives employed by Kremlin-linked figures and Department of Justice officials. This view, that the real collusion may have taken place among those who arranged the meeting rather than the Trump officials who agreed to attend it, is supported by two disparate lines of evidence pulled together for the first time here: newly released records and a pattern of efforts to connect the Trump campaign to Russia.

JUDGE ORDERS RELEASE OF ‘MUSLIM SCHOOL SHOOTING TRAINING CAMP’ SUSPECTS AFTER CHARGES OF RACISM

Judge Sarah Backus ordered the release of five suspects accused of running a “school shooting training camp” after one of their attorneys said they’re only being targeted because they’re “black and Muslim,” as opposed to “white and Christian.”

“Many people here live in unconventional ways,” Judge Baukus said.

“The NRA right now are telling us that guns are a good thing and that we should be training our teenagers to go ahead and use them, but now that we have someone who’s actually do that, and they’re not white, and they’re not Christian we think there’s some nefarious plan,” one of the suspects other attorneys told the media outside the court.

From CNN:

The evidence was intended to paint a disturbing picture of a zealous family training for a violent mission against government institutions, New Mexico prosecutors said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

How about the one dead kid, and the 11 starving children?!?

No crimes here, right, Judge Sarah Backus?!? Starvation and murder are not crimes against minor children in this country, if the family is Muslim, right?!?

With this release from prison by this Judge, one has to speculate if this guy wasn't hired by elements of the Deep State to teach his kids to do school shootings, as a way of imposing a total and complete gun ban on American citizens.

I fully expect all charges here to be dropped; the guy got caught before he could finish his intended work, and the case will no longer see the light of day in the media.

CENSORSHIP IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN POWERFUL PEOPLE GET SCARED

Anyone who tells you the recent escalation of censorship by U.S. tech giants is merely a reflection of private companies making independent decisions is either lying or dangerously ignorant.

In the case of Facebook, the road from pseudo-platform to willing and enthusiastic tool of establishment power players is fairly straightforward. It really got going earlier this year when issues surrounding egregious privacy violations in the case of Cambridge Analytica (stuff that had been going on for years) could finally be linked to the Trump campaign. It was at this point that powerful and nefarious forces spotted an opportunity to leverage the company’s gigantic influence in distributing news and opinion for their own ends. Rather than hold executives to account and break up the company, the choice was made to commandeer and weaponize the platform. This is where we stand today.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is only one thing to do with the unholy triumverate of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube: ignore them as though they were the plague, and take a look at their upcoming competitors, like GAB! Yandex, and DuckDuckGo.

This is not to say that ultimately, these outlets won't get bought out, but at least for the time being, they are reasonably open, and don't track where you have been on these sites.

Ajit Pai loses in court—FCC can’t kill broadband subsidy in Tribal areas

A US appeals court has blocked the Federal Communications Commission's attempt to take a broadband subsidy away from Tribal areas.

The FCC decision, originally slated to take effect later this year, would have made it difficult or impossible for Tribal residents to obtain a $25-per-month Lifeline subsidy that reduces the cost of Internet or phone service for poor people. But on Friday, a court stayed the FCC decision pending appeal, saying that Tribal organizations and small wireless carriers are likely to win their case against the commission.

AN 11-YEAR-OLD HACKED A MOCK FLORIDA ELECTION SITE IN 10 MINUTES

The security of the U.S. election system just lost a vote of confidence.

At the annual hacker conference DefCon, Emmett Brewer, an 11-year-old boy from Austin, Texas, was able to change the results on a mock Florida election website. It took him 10 minutes.

Though the website in question was a mere replica of the Florida Secretary of State website, the hack points to the larger vulnerabilities of the election infrastructure in the U.S. On the heels of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, Microsoft has already detected evidence of Russian interference in three races in the 2018 mid-terms.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It took this 11 year old kid 10 minutes to change the outcome of a mock-up of Florida's electronic voting system?!?

Folks, if we ever need to give these voting machines the deep-six, and restore paper ballots, now is the time.

And particularly in the upcoming midterms, we cannot allow Voter ID to be considered criminal, in any way, shape, or form!!

THERE'S A FENTANYL CRISIS IN THE UNITED STATES. NEBRASKA IS ABOUT TO MURDER SOMEONE WITH IT ON PURPOSE

If only "states with the death penalty spent half as much time developing policy to support people in their lives as they did figuring out ways to kill people"

As Nebraska prepares to complete its first state-sanctioned execution in two decades, human rights groups are condemning the death penalty and denouncing officials for operating under a "cloak of secrecy" in obtaining the drugs that will be used to kill Carey Dean Moore—substances that have caused tens of thousands of accidental deaths across the U.S. in recent years.

Amnesty International denounced the state's move to participate in "the ultimate denial of human rights" after having carried out no executions since 1997.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF you have never seen the film "Dead Man Walking", featuring Susan Sarandon as Sister Prejean, and Sean Penn as the guy about to be executed, please do yourself a favor, and record it/buy it. If you still think that summary execution for murderers, even in the most "kind and humanitarian way possible" is absolutely the right thing to do, this movie.... just may change your mind and heart, particularly if you are a brother or sister Christian.

This Catholic nun has been one of the most ardent activists against the death penalty in the United States, and I have absolute utter respect for her.

I do not believe in executions for murder, and before you label me a namby-pamby leftist sychophant on this issue, I would like to politely remind you, that the chain of evidence in this country is horrifically vulnerable to misuse, neglect, and damage.

If you don't believe me, take a look at what The Innocence Project in Texas is doing.

The Innocence Project

For murder, I would suggest a national standard of life imprisonment with zero possibility of parole; these people cannot be allowed to kill again.

OH LOOK, YET MORE EFFORTS TO STRANGLE BROADBAND COMPETITION

A major component of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was the idea of line sharing, or local loop unbundling. Simply put, the rules set forth required that incumbent telcos needed to share their networks with smaller competitors, providing wholesale access to bandwidth. It was an effort to foster something vaguely resembling competition in the broadband space by letting smaller companies piggyback on existing network infrastructure. The thought was that because the barriers to market entry were so high (both politically and financially), this could help smaller competitors gain footholds that would otherwise be impossible.

The effort didn't work out for several reasons.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here on Oahu, we are stuck with Spectrum, which promises much, in those multi-million commercials, featuring the voice of the comedian, Ellen De Generes, but actually delivers very little of what it promises.

When cable companies do not have to compete, they don't have to give a damn about the true quality of their service, or if there is even a modicum of public satisfaction with it.

VENEZUELAN PIRATES SPREAD FEAR ACROSS THE CARIBBEAN

Vessels sailing in the vicinity of Trinidad and Tobago are now under threat of being the victims of piracy for the first since the 1700s. According to a report from the Washington Post, in the wake of Venezuela’s economic and societal collapse, criminals desperate to earn a living have taken up the centuries-old crime and are attacking yachts and fishing vessels along the coast of South America.

Jeremy McDermott of Insight Crime, a nonprofit that studies organized crime in the region told the Washington Post that “It’s criminal chaos, a free-for-all, along the Venezuelan coast.”

“This reminds me of how the problems started off the coast of eastern Africa," said Roodal Moonilal, a politician from Trinidad and Tobago while speaking to the Washington Post. “What we’re seeing – the piracy, the smuggling – it’s the result of Venezuela’s political and economic collapse.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Forgive my cynicism here, but I have to wonder if this violence has perhaps been "underwritten" by the American Deep State in some way, so that unthinking American s will cheer when the Marines go into the region to "clear this up", and ultimately invade the country (with one of the largest oil reserves on the planet) in order to "save it from itself."

When's a backdoor not a backdoor? When the Oz government says it isn't

Australia's promised “not-a-backdoor” crypto-busting bill is out and the government has kept its word - it doesn't want a backdoor, just the keys to your front one.

The draft of The Assistance and Access Bill 2018 calls for anyone using or selling communications services in Australia will be subject to police orders for access to private data.

That includes all vendors of computers, phones, apps, social media and cloud services in the Lucky Country, and anyone within national borders using them. These data-tapping orders will be enforced with fines of up to AU$10m (US$7.3m) for companies or $50,000 ($36,368) for individuals

The draft legislation also wants five years in prison for anyone who reveals a data-slurping investigation is going on.

'DEEPLY DISTURBING': FOR SECOND TIME THIS YEAR, FACEBOOK SUSPENDS LEFT-LEANING TELESUR ENGLISH WITHOUT EXPLANATION

Deeply Disturbing': For Second Time This Year, Facebook Suspends Left-Leaning teleSUR English Without Explanation

"It seems like the censorship power many people on the left want Silicon Valley executives to unilaterally exercise might end up being wielded against the left. One good way to know that would happen is that is already is happening."

For the second time this year, Facebook removed TeleSUR English's page without an explanation beyond claiming the media network had violated the platform's terms of service. (Photo: TeleSUREnglish/Twitter)

For the second time this year, Facebook has suspended teleSUR English's page, claiming the left-leaning Latin American news network violated the social media platform's terms of service without any further explanation—a move that provoked outrage and concern among journalists, free speech advocates, and Big Tech critics.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would politely suggest that all of us, when confronted with this electronic shunning of a site we believe should be up there, even if we may pointedly disagree with its content, should be emailing Facebook, and asking specifically what "terms of service" were violated by that site.

If ALL of us do this, it will at least put Facebook on notice; perhaps (peacefully) overwhelming its servers would make the point.

But in light that this station originates in Venezuela, and the US government doesn't want anything but the "US Official Narrative" to be heard by both English and Spanish-speaking people, one wonders; after the colossal flub of its attempting to murder Maduros via drone strike, what other "pleasantries" the US government has in store for him and the Venezuelan people, and soon?!?

How your daily prescription pills could be draining your body of vital vitamins (and what you can do about it!)

Around half of us now take prescription pills daily, with a quarter on three different types, and millions of pensioners taking five a day on average.

What many people may not realise is that their medication — while combatting chronic and even life-threatening conditions — could also be depriving them of vital minerals and vitamins, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss, depression, loss of sex drive and muscle pains.

They can even cause crumbly bones, as Julie Sharp discovered (see box below) — she has severe asthma, and at 32, she’s also just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. This is a condition usually associated with old age, but the high-dose oral steroids she needs for her asthma affected the absorption of vital bone minerals including calcium and vitamin D.

Migrant rescue ship Aquarius to be stripped of Gibraltar registration

The government of Gibraltar has said it is to strip the migrant rescue vessel Aquarius of its Gibraltar registration.

The "notice of removal" was issued by the Gibraltar Maritime Administration on 6 August because the ship was registered as a "survey vessel" but was being used for search and rescue work.

The registration is due to be officially revoked on 20 August. At this point, registration will revert to Germany because the underlying owner is German.

The news emerged as Italy demanded Britain take in the 141 migrants on board the ship because of its Gibraltar flag registration.
