Without Public Editor, NYT Ducks And Dismisses Criticism Of Its Sympathetic Nazi Profile

This past June, when the New York Times unceremoniously killed off its public editor position, publisher Arthur Sulzberger tried mightily to characterize the move as addition by subtraction. In a newsroom memo, he promised that a newly created “Reader Center” would make the paper’s reporting “more transparent” and its journalists “more responsive.” As FAIR (6/1/17) noted at the time, these excuses were disingenuous “rationalizations, not legitimate rationales,” and were more likely to make the paper less accountable and transparent in the long run. And this past weekend proved these fears were well-justified.

NBC Fires Matt Lauer Over Sexual Misconduct Allegation

NBC has fired its leading morning news anchor Matt Lauer over a sexual harassment allegation, the network’s president for news said in a memo to staff on Wednesday.

“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer,” Andrew Lack, the NBC News president, said in the memo.

He said the allegation against Mr. Lauer “represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment.”

Can’t You See War on the Horizon?

According to news reports in the British press, Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed Russia’s industries to prepare themselves to be able to make a quick switch to war production.

Clearly, the Russian government would not make such an announcement unless it was convinced that the prospect of war with the West was real. For some time I have emphasized in my columns that the consequence of years of hostile actions taken by Washington and its European vassals against Russia was leading to war.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The war I see coming is bigger than just between the US government and Russia.

The demonization of Russia, North Korea, and Iran continues apace.

And note, of late, an attempted "linkage" between North Korea and Iran, regarding North Korea's weapons program.

Demonization, coupled with sanctions, are nearly always a prelude to war.

I hope to hell that I am wrong, but I see a world war coming to this planet, within this next year, and one which will bring back the draft, in this country, of both our young men and our young women.

Is the Islamic State a “Geopolitical Tool”? US Looks to Southeast Asia to Unleash Its ISIS-Daesh Hordes

Western think tanks have been increasingly busy cultivating a narrative to explain the sudden and spreading presence of militants linked or fighting under the banner of the self-proclaimed “Islamic State” (ISIS) across Southeast Asia.

This narrative – these think tanks would have audiences believe – entails militants fleeing Syria and Iraq, and entrenching themselves amid supposedly sectarian conflicts in Southeast Asia. The think tanks conveniently never mention how tens of thousands of militants are funding the logistical feat required to move them to Southeast Asia or sustain their militant operations in the region once they arrive.

Among these think tanks is the so-called International Crisis Group (ICG). In its report, “Jihadism in southern Thailand – A phantom menace,” it claims:

The decline of the Islamic State (ISIS) and the advent of ISIS-linked violence in South East Asia evince the possibility of a new era of transnational jihadist terrorism in the region.

MOSCOW SCRAMBLES FIGHTER JET AFTER DETECTING US SPY PLANE APPROACHING RUSSIAN BORDER

Russia has scrambled a Su-30 fighter jet after detecting an American ?8? Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea, according to a Defense Ministry statement. The US spy plane was approaching at high speed to the Russian border, it said.

The Russian fighter jet buzzed the US Navy reconnaissance plane at around 1pm local time (10:00 GMT) as it was flying over the neutral waters of the Black Sea, the ministry said.

“After moving closer, the Russian [Su-30] fighter jet flew over the object and visually identified it as an American reconnaissance aircraft ?8? Poseidon,” the statement reads.

After the spy plane was intercepted by the Russian Air Force, the US aircraft changed course and flew away.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In the tense environment between Russia and the US geopolitically and militarily, now is NOT the time for the US military to be playing "chicken" over neutral waters.

Fake News & Fake Values

It appears that America has little awareness of the value of awareness since fake news and fake values arrived to take possession of the body politic. Solipsism appears to lurk behind a modus operandi of tough talking American empire-speak when it addresses its ire to other centres of power daring to challenge its hegemonic brand of self-centred conceits, now spreading across the globe.

Kevin Dowd Summarizes Populism for His Sister Maureen’s Liberal Readers: Trump Has 43.2M Twitter Followers; NYT Has 3.1M Subscribers

In keeping with her annual holiday tradition, liberal New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd let her Republican brother Kevin write her Thanksgiving Day column this week.

Kevin Dowd has been delighting conservatives and outraging Dowd’s limousine liberal readership for years now. (Personal favorite: Kevin’s Christmas 2009 column when he told Sarah Palin: “Keep up the good work. Anyone who annoys Keith Olbermann that much is a friend to all of us.”)

This year, Kevin found a pithy way to summarize why President Trump’s tweeting “can be an effective defense” – Trump, he writes, “has 43.2 million Twitter followers. The New York Times has 3.1 million subscribers.”

Putin signs amendments to Russia's ‘foreign agents’ media law

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law which will allow authorities to brand certain foreign media outlets as “foreign agents.”

Under the new law, any media outlet operating in Russia and funded by a foreign state may be designated a foreign agent by the Justice Ministry. The bill was first introduced to the State Duma, the lower house, and adopted by MPs earlier this month. On Wednesday, the upper house overwhelmingly supported the legislation.

The new document introduces amendments to two federal laws on information and media in Russia.Any foreign media entity “regardless of its organizational and legal form, might be considered as functioning as a foreign agent if it receives funds and/or any other assets from foreign states, foreign governmental organizations, international and foreign organizations, foreign citizens, persons without [Russian] citizenship,” the document stipulates.

“Good Or Bad, Speak The Truth” – All Syrians Ask For Is Honest Reporting, MSM Responds With Lies

By Brandon Turbeville

As I traveled throughout Syria during the early half of October, there were many recurring themes. I heard repeatedly of support for the government, how things were so much better before America’s “revolutionaries” entered the country, atrocities committed by America’s terrorists, and of course stories of finding the best in people and life in general amidst such horrors.

One recurring theme I came across, however, was that of the consistent willful obfuscation of the truth by Western corporate media outlets and, more specifically, the journalists they employ...

Damascus Shelled, Civilians And Children Killed By U.S.-Backed Terrorists – Silence From MSM

By Brandon Turbeville

While the United States continues to pant wildly and promote disproven claims of chemical weapons, Assad’s alleged “brutality,” and the SAA’s supposed “crimes against humanity,” the fighters it has funded since 2011 are engaged in the very definition of terrorism in Damascus as we speak. For nearly two weeks, terrorists surrounded in areas like Jobar and Ghouta have been launching missiles and mortars indiscriminately at civilians in old and new Damascus.

Since the beginning of November, random shelling and mortars have been terrorizing the people of Damascus...

Three Witnesses Just Shut Down One Of The Worst Attacks On Roy Moore

The New Yorker published a story claiming Roy Moore was banned from the Gadsden Mall for harassing teenage girls.

The story was based on rumors their sources heard with no concrete proof or testimonials given.

It smelled fishy.

But since it painted Moore in a bad light, shaky reporting was accepted as gospel and the media ran with the narrative that Moore was a predator who made children feel unsafe.

There was just one problem.

It was fake news.

Moore’s campaign released the testimony of three witnesses – including the mall manager and a security guard – who declared that Moore was never banned from the mall.

A new report from Vanity Fair https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/11/trump-intel-slip. has emerged this week regarding a scandal from over six months ago. This was related to President Trump having “leaked” details about Israeli anti-ISIS operations to the Russian ambassador.

CNN Blackout On House Democrat Under FBI Investigation

It has been 24 hours since news broke that Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Bob Brady is under FBI investigation for allegedly paying his primary opponent to drop out of the race, but CNN has published zero articles and devoted zero airtime to the story.

The FBI was granted a search warrant for Brady’s campaign email, BobCongress@Aol.com, as part of its investigation into payments Brady’s campaign allegedly made to 2012 primary opponent Jimmie Moore. Two of Brady’s political consultants have already been charged in connection with the investigation.

A search of CNN’s website shows the news outlet has yet to publish an article acknowledging the investigation into the congressman.

For more than half a century, the sugar industry has used Big Tobacco tactics to suppress sugar/cancer link and to confuse the science

UCSF researchers have published an important paper in PLOS Biology that draws on internal documents from the US sugar industry lobby that shows that the industry deliberately suppressed research on the link between sucrose and bladder cancer and heart disease, and then deliberately sowed misinformation about the health effects of sugar, using tactics straight out of the tobacco industry's cancer-denial playbook.

TOP GERMAN JUDGES SLAM EU PLANS TO CREATE GLOBAL COURT TO ENFORCE CORPORATE SOVEREIGNTY

A few weeks ago, we wrote how many -- even the US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer -- seem to think it's time for corporate sovereignty, also called "investor-state dispute settlement" (ISDS), to go. For some reason the European Commission disagrees. As Techdirt readers may recall, after receiving a bloody nose in a public consultation about corporate sovereignty, the Commission announced to great fanfare that it was "replacing" ISDS with something called the Investment Court System (ICS). In fact, this amounted to little more than putting lipstick on the ISDS pig, since ICS suffered from the same fundamental flaw: it gave companies unique rights to sue countries in a supra-national court. The EU is still plugging away at the ICS idea, and it now wants to go further by creating a truly global corporate sovereignty system enforced by a new Multilateral Investment Court (pdf), an initiative formally launched a couple of months ago:

Webmaster's Commentary:

Corporations need less power, not more, in the scheme of things; and particularly in the realm of computer/telecom product issues, when the products don't work, they do not need governmental protection, as this industry is no longer in its infancy.
