PLO condemns UN for removing report accusing Israel of apartheid

The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) has condemned the UN for revoking a report accusing Israel of imposing an apartheid regime on Palestinians.

"Instead of succumbing to political blackmail or allowing itself to be censured or intimidated by external parties, the UN should condemn the acts described in the report and hold Israel responsible,” said PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi on Saturday.

On Friday, a senior United Nations official, Jordanian Rima Khalaf, resigned due to coercive measures used against her to withdraw the UN report which was taken down from UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) website.

Campaign Against Antisemitism is a campaign against Palestinians

The Campaign Against Antisemitism is a British propaganda organization and registered charity that specializes in defaming Palestine solidarity campaigners. When I launched a petition calling for the group to be deregistered, it responded in a hostile manner.

It first tried to persuade the website Change.org to take the petition down. When that failed, its supporters attacked the petition in an article published by the Daily Mail, a paper which once praised Adolf Hitler for having “saved Germany from Israelites of international attachments.”

Originality not being its strong point, the Campaign Against Antisemitism then alleged that I was a “notorious anti-Semite.”

REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN ANGEL, RACHEL CORRIE

On March 16, 2003, Rachel was killed by an Israel Occupation Force (IOF) armored bulldozer in Rafah during the second Palestinian intifada.

Rachel had come to Gaza to try and establish a sister city project between her hometown Olympia, Washington and Rafah, Gaza. She was a peace activist connected to the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), who tried to prevent the demolition of Palestinian houses which were being carried out by the Israeli army.

After a three hour long confrontation between ISM activists and the Israeli army’s demolition forces, she was killed, less than two months after arriving in Gaza.

UN official resigns after pressure to withdraw Israel apartheid report

A senior United Nations official has resigned, following pressure from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to withdraw the landmark report published earlier this week finding Israel guilty of apartheid.

Rima Khalaf, the head of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) which published the report, announced her resignation at a press conference in Beirut on Friday.

Reuters reports that Khalaf took the step “after what she described as pressure from the secretary-general to withdraw a report accusing Israel of imposing an ‘apartheid regime’ on Palestinians.”

“I resigned because it is my duty not to conceal a clear crime, and I stand by all the conclusions of the report,” Khalaf stated.

Israeli jets bomb multiple targets across Gaza Strip

According to al-Aqsa TV, Israeli jets targeted areas to the west of the Dayr al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, and an empty patch of agricultural land to the east of Gaza City in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Israeli F16 jets also bombed the Shejaiya area, reportedly resulting in power cuts across the region.

There have been no immediate reports of possible casualties as a result of the Israeli attacks.

Earlier, Israeli forces claimed that a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip into an unpopulated area in the southern occupied territories without causing any injuries.

IT’S OFFICIAL ~~ ISRAEL IS ON THE ROAD TO FASCISM

Police detained prominent left-wing activist Jeff Halper last Wednesday at the Ma’aleh Adumim settlement, for suspected incitement, saying they acted on a complaint he had “materials related to BDS” in his possession.

Halper, who moved to Israel from the United States in 1973, was picked up after leading a tour of foreigners to the E1 site across the road from the settlement and transported by police van to a nearby station then released without being placed under arrest.

Police officers photographed the posters and maps he was holding before freeing him. Halper denies handing out any material related to BDS during the tour, or even discussing the boycott movement.

Handing out such materials would not have been in violation of the law, even a 2011 anti-boycott law according to which a person or an organization calling for the boycott of Israel, including the settlements, can be sued by the boycott’s targets without them having to prove that they sustained any damage.

David Friedman, Staunch Settlement Backer, Approved by Senate Panel as Envoy to Israel

Friedman confirmed by the Foreign Relations Committee on the force of the GOP majority and one Democratic vote. The nomination now awaits the approval of the Senate floor.

The fact that Menendez was the sole Democrat to vote in favor of the nomination, thus providing it with a minimal level of bipartisan cover, didn't come as a surprise. Menendez, like Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), was one of only four Democrats to vote against the Iran deal in 2015. He comes from New Jersey, a state with a large Jewish population, and has important supporters and donors from the more right-wing and Orthodox segments of the state's Jewish community, which were generally supportive of Friedman's nomination.

High Art: Historic Aerial Shots of Pre-state Israel Revealed

It was 1937 and publisher Zalman Schocken was looking for an original gift for his friends. The result: 40 spectacular photographs capturing the cities and landscapes from the skies. Deep within the National Library archive, an unmarked cardboard box wrapped in fine linen contains 40 high-quality aerial photographs of pre-state Israel. A yellowing piece of paper sits atop the photos, with a brief inscription in Hebrew and German revealing the story behind their creation. The project was the result of a unique collaboration between a successful publisher and one of pre-state Israel’s greatest photographers. It was to produce the first-ever set of aerial photographs of pre-state Israel to be taken for nonmilitary purposes. [Note they refer to it as "Pre-State Israel," but actually the very nice cities in the photos were Palestine.]

Finders Keepers in the Holy Land: So who was there first?

2017 will undoubtedly be a critical year for Palestine. We are standing at the crossroads of many different possibilities that could have serious implications for the future of the area. Positive or negative, disastrous or beneficial, the people between the river and the sea wait in anticipation to see which direction the future will take them. However, I can’t help but feel that the adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” is appropriate here. No matter how many times people insist that we are on the cusp of a new era in the “conflict”, the same old arguments and myths animating much of the debate on Palestine since the beginning of the 20th century remain remarkably persistent.

French Citizens Complicit in the Israeli Occupation

The French provide some of the most important contingents of volunteers in the Israeli army. If until now the French state seems to have closed it eyes on this affair, the admission of Palestine to the International Court of Justice is likely to be a game-changer.

On 4 January 2017, the Franco-Israeli Elor Azaria, sergeant in the Israeli army (IDF), was convicted by a military tribunal of voluntary manslaughter. On 24 March 2016, he had been filmed while killing, with one shot to the head, Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a 21 year-old Palestinian involved in a knife attacked against Israeli soldiers, near the settlement of Tel Rumeida around Hebron. This judgment has rekindled debate on the engagement of French citizens in the IDF.

Israel has created a terrible problem which it is incapable of solving. That is why it has always been the case that the United States must dictate a solution, but it is unable to do so, paralyzed as it is by the heavy influence of Israel and America’s own apologists and lobbyists.

Palestinian, 25, dies after being shot by Israeli troops on his way to his last chemo session

On his way to what was supposed to his final chemotherapy session, last November, he boarded the wrong shared taxi. Discovering his mistake, he got off and ran across the highway to catch a taxi going in the opposite direction. Israel Defense Forces soldiers who may have thought he was going to attack them, shot him, seriously wounding him. For the next three months, he was bedridden in Beilinson Hospital, in Petah Tikva, most of the time in the intensive care unit. Throughout that entire period, no one in the IDF thought of updating his parents and family about the condition of their loved one. His mother was the only one allowed who was supposed to be allowed to visit him, but even though she came a few times, on all but one occasion, she was not permitted to enter his room. Just as his condition seemed to be improving, he died, apparently last week. No one thought to inform the family about his death, or the circumstances surrounding it. Israel has not yet returned the body.

"I have often seen this gentlemen in Braunau and wonder if this means something," the Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten paper cited a local resident as saying on his Facebook page alongside a picture of the man it said resembled Hitler.

Trump’s Foreign Policy at a Crossroads

By Robert Parry

If you wanted to bring sanity to a U.S. foreign policy that has spun crazily out of control, there would be some immediate steps that you – or, say, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson – could take, starting with a renewed commitment to tell the truth to the American people.

If you wanted to base U.S. foreign policy on the firm foundation of reality, you also could let the American people in on who is actually the principal sponsor of the terrorism that they’re concerned about: Al Qaeda, Islamic State, the Taliban – all Sunni-led outfits, none of which are backed by Shiite-ruled Iran. Yet, all we hear from Official Washington’s political and media insiders is that Iran is the chief sponsor of terrorism.

Kushner Foundation Bankrolls Radical Jewish West Bank Settlers

In recent years, the parents of Jared Kushner – the son-in-law and trusted confidant of President-elect Donald Trump – have donated tens of thousands of dollars to organizations and institutions located in the West Bank settlements, according to their tax forms.

The U.S. State Department has long held that the settlements are an impediment to peace. During the election campaign, however, Trump’s key advisers on Israel challenged this position.

On average, the family donates a few million dollars a year to charitable causes through the Charles and Seryl Kushner Foundation, tax forms for the years 2010 through 2014 show. The average donation is typically in the range of $5,000 to $10,000. Jared Kushner – as well as his brother and two sisters – sits on the board of his parents’ family foundation, which was created in 1997.

Trump Adopts a Harder Line on Israeli Settlements

President Trump, who presented himself as a staunch supporter of Israel during last year’s campaign, took a harder line on settlements in an interview published on Friday and indicated that he was rethinking his promise to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem. Mr. Trump told an Israeli newspaper that settlements “don’t help the process” and that he did not believe that “going forward with these settlements is a good thing for peace.” He also did not reaffirm his past vow to move the embassy, saying that it “is not an easy decision” and “we will see what happens.” The comments amounted to a striking recalibration of Mr. Trump’s approach to Israel just five days before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House.

Trump’s message to both Israel and Palestinians: I’m in no one’s pocket

Analysis: If Netanyahu thought he had the ‘green light’ to expand settlements and build new ones as soon as Trump took office, the US president has made it clear in recent days that he is the one setting the tone. At this stage, he supports the two-state solution and plans to put a lot of effort into reaching a peace agreement.

Israeli minister: The era of the two-state solution is over

The era of the two-state solution is over, after the Knesset approved a law legitimising settlement blocs, Israeli Minister of Culture and Sport, Miri Regev, said.

The minister told Public Radio Israel yesterday that “the era of the two-state solution has ended.”

The official from the Likud party, headed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said: “We will impose the law on Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] in the event that this it rejected by the Supreme Court.”

Trump edges away from moving Israel embassy to Jerusalem and stakes out middle ground on building new settlements – just as Netanyahu is primed for a visit

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is only in the early stages of considering the relocation of America's embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

And he hedged on the issue of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's continued settlement construction, refusing to condemn the practice but also backing off from aggressive campaign statements supporting the practice.

'No, I don't want to condemn Israel,' the president told the Israel Hayom newspaper in an interview published Friday morning. 'Israel has had a long history of condemnation and difficulty. And I don't want to be condemning Israel.'

But he added: 'I am not somebody that believes that going forward with these settlements is a good thing for peace.'

'Every time you take land for settlements, there is less land left,' Trump argued.

Israel issues talking points on controversial law concerning seizure of some Palestinian-owned land

The Israeli parliament’s approval Monday of a contentious law enabling the state to seize some privately owned Palestinian land in the West Bank immediately drew harsh criticism from much of the international community, including some of Israel’s closest allies.

Now, the Israeli government, realizing the law could land them in hot water, with possible lawsuits in the International Criminal Court in The Hague, has created several “talking points” to enable Israeli diplomats worldwide to contend with the global criticism.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No talking points on earth could indemnify and hold harmless an Israeli government which practices a savage, serial genocide against Palestinians and steals their land in such a way that now, no contiguous state of Palestine is possible, because of where these settlements stand.

This is why BDS movement against Israeli goods (boycott, dis investment, and sanctions) is more critical against Israel than ever before.

Israel’s efforts to erase Palestinian history reflect ‘incremental genocide,’ Ehrenreich says

The question about genocide– yes, it’s an incremental genocide. And I think that’s a word that gives a lot of people pause and it certainly should. We don’t see the absolutely mass slaughters, although in Gaza I think we’ve seen something very much like it that we usually associate with genocide. But– the attempts to erase a people, to just erase them, to erase their history, I think follow a logic that can only be called genocidal. I mean, every time someone says– and people say it all the time, I get it on twitter all the time– “There’s no such thing as a Palestinian,” or “There was nobody there when the Zionists arrived”– these are genocidal statements, these are attempts to erase a culture, erase a history, decimate a people and I think they should be recognized as that. - See more at: http://mondoweiss.net/2017/02/palestinian-incremental-ehrenreich/#stha...

Seven Years Ago Today, The 'Irvine 11' Dared to Heckle An Israeli Ambassador on an American Campus- & Learned How 'Special' Israel Really Was

Seven years ago, on Feb 8, 2010, students at UC Irvine protested a speech given by Israeli ambassador Michael Oren. They heckled the Israeli, calling him a war criminal and other such things, and were escorted out of the auditorium by campus police. But that wasn't the end of it. It was only the beginning of a years-long legal battle and criminal prosecution which shockingly illustrated just who Americans 'aren't allowed to heckle.' You can watch the video of the students 'crimes' here. Nearly a year after the incident, prior to the statute of limitations, a rabbi paid a visit to the Orange County, CA Districy Attorney- who swiftly charged them at the very last minute & aggressively prosecuted all of them. In a Shift, Trump Warns Against New Israeli Settlements as Netanyahu Plots Major Expansion
