EU announces sanctions for high-ranking officials responsible for brutal crackdown in Belarus and rejects Alexander Lukashenko’s election victory

The EU today announced sanctions for high-ranking officials responsible for the brutal crackdown in Belarus and rejected Alexander Lukashenko's election victory.

European Council President Charles Michel said that the August 9 election - which saw 80 percent support for the strongman leader - was 'neither free nor fair' and that the EU does not recognise the result.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel - who was yesterday warned by Russia's Vladimir Putin not to interfere in the former Soviet domain - said: 'There is no doubt that there were massive rule violations in the election.'

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder; what is Putin planning to do, if it appears that it that Alexander Lukashenko will fall?!?

That will most probably push Belarus very firmly into the orbit of the west, but what is Putin prepared to do to stop it?!?
