UN demands access to secret Israeli 'torture' jail

The United Nations anti-torture committee has demanded access to an Israeli secret prison where torture is allegedly being practiced.

The UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva prepared a document on Israel's record on torture on Tuesday and called on Tel Aviv to release information on the alleged "Facility 1391" which is situated in an "undetermined location within Israel and which is not accessible to the International Committee of the Red Cross or detainees' lawyers or relatives."

"Allegations of torture, ill-treatment and poor detention conditions in this facility have been reported to the committee," read the document.

Can the Neocons Jump to the Dems?

Neoconservatives used the Republican Party as a vehicle to promote and employ their policies of muscular nation-building overseas.

But like the parasite that eventually kills its host, the Republican Party’s virtual collapse, in large part because of the failed nation-building adventure in Iraq, has left neoconservatives discredited and facing policy extinction. Unfortunately, neoconservatism will probably live on by changing hosts.

BAGHDAD: Iraq will not extend the June 30 deadline for US troops to withdraw from urban areas despite concerns about a resurgence of violence in recent weeks, a spokesman said yesterday. The government has insisted it is committed to the timeline laid out in a US -Iraqi security agreement that calls for American forces to pull back from urban areas by the summer and from the rest of the country by the end of 2011.

Don't Be Fooled, We've Been Here Before

The market, after the gut wrenching sell-off earlier, is now officially positive for the year. Things are rosy and we can embrace the new bull market, right? Not so fast.

Let's not forget we are still over 40% off from the market highs of 2008, the national deficit and debt has officially exploded past even the worst assumptions of a year ago, unemployment is racing to 10%, housing has been decimated, 2 million more homes are estimated to be foreclosed on this year, the government is the largest investor in U.S. financial institutions & has decided to arbitrarily re-write bankruptcy law and despite all this, we cannot get oil (USO) to go below $50 a barrel which means any growth or geo-political event causes a massive surge in prices

Study Plunges Standard Theory of Cosmology Into Crisis

As modern cosmologists rely more and more on the ominous "dark matter" to explain otherwise inexplicable observations, much effort has gone into the detection of this mysterious substance in the last two decades, yet no direct proof could be found that it actually exists. Even if it does exist, dark matter would be unable to reconcile all the current discrepancies between actual measurements and predictions based on theoretical models. Hence the number of physicists questioning the existence of dark matter has been increasing for some time now. Competing theories of gravitation have already been developed which are independent of this construction. Their only problem is that they conflict with Newton's theory of gravitation. "Maybe Newton was indeed wrong", declares Professor Dr.

Obama and Hitler - History Unfolding

Do not forget that Germany was the most educated, the most cultured country in Europe . It was full of music, art, museums, hospitals, laboratories, and universities. And yet, in less than six years (a shorter time span than just two terms of the U. S. presidency) it was rounding up its own citizens, killing others, abrogating its laws, turning children against parents, and neighbors against neighbors.. All with the best of intentions, of course. The road to Hell is paved with them.

UN blames Israel for Gaza attacks

More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed in
Israel's month-long assault on Gaza

A United Nations inquiry into the war in Gaza has found that Israel was blame for at least seven direct attacks on UN operations - including schools and medical centres.

The UN report, commissioned by Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary-general, said the Israeli military intentionally fired at UN facilities and civilians hiding in them during the war and used disproportionate force.

Missiles, bombs and small arms were all used by Israel against the UN - leading to dozens of deaths.

The UN's own fuel and aid depot in Gaza was hit with Israeli artillery shells causing widespread damage.

The attack continued for two hours after the UN asked the Israeli military for it to stop.

Busting the Torture Myths

.A torture memo writer refused to comply with a warning about criminal risks—and exposes the truth about the policies.
• Karl Rove and Dick Cheney are convinced that Bush-era torture policy is a promising political product for a party down on its luck.
• Donald Rumsfeld gave step-by-step directions for techniques used at Abu Ghraib.
• Torture techniques originated from the White House shortly after 9/11—long before they were arguably needed on the battlefield.
• Torture was used by Cheney and Rumsfeld to find justification for the invasion of Iraq.
• Jay Bybee was confirmed to a lifetime appointment as all eyes were on Colin Powell’s speech to the U.N. about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program.

What do the stress tests really mean?

According to the New York Times, the bank stress tests show that the banks are still solvent, and that they are in better shape than assumed.

That's great news, right? We would all be very happy if the banks became healthy and the economic crisis ended.

But it now appears that more than half - 10 out of 19 - of the banks subjected to stress tests will need to raise more capital.

In addition, it is no secret (as apparent from the leading financial news services) that many experts are cynical of the stress tests:

UNITED STATES JUSTICE - $500 FINE FOR PLEADING NOT GUILTY?

As the defendants were filing into court they were warned by the Deputy Sheriff that if they chose to try their case instead of pleading guilty they could be fined up to an additional $500. Before the proceedings started, the deputy prosecutors were shuffling off the defendants to issue the same dire warning.

I am almost certain that you can't fine someone for taking their case to trial. You can impose reasonable court costs, but fining someone for taking their case to court? Highly doubtful. It could well violate the "excessive fines" clause of Article I, Section 16 and Article I, Section 12 as well as several other statutes and constitutional provisions.

Convicted as a teen, US man freed after 16 years in prison

Arrested at 13 for a murder he didn't commit, Thaddeus Jimenez spent more than 16 years in jail before his conviction was tossed out and the man originally fingered for the crime was arrested.

Jimenez is believed to be the youngest person convicted of a crime who has been exonerated in the United States.

He was tried as an adult and sentenced to 45 years in jail -- despite the fact that an alleged accomplice in the murder insisted that another teen been the shooter and that police were provided with a tape in which that teen confessed.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is why no person of good moral conscience can support the death penalty.

Our prosecutors and our courts make mistakes. More concerned with promotions than justice, the prosecutors sent an innocent 13 year old boy to prison even though a witness and a taped confession pointed at the truly guilty man.

Thaddeus Jimenez is free, and he is still young enough to have something of a life left to him. But how does the state make amends when they wrongfully lock up someone for their entire life and then release them when they are too old to have much life left at all? Does any amount of money really compensate for a youth and prime of life spent behind bars?

When the state wrongfully executes the innocent, which we know has happened, there is no way to give back the life the state has taken.

The results of the much-anticipated bank stress tests are finally set to be released on Thursday -- after the markets close. But we can already give the Obama economic team a grade for the way the tests have been handled: F.

The toughest meeting of Barack Obama's young presidency is approaching. In the next few weeks, he will have to sit down with Israel's Binyamin Netanyahu. Far more burdensome are the ghosts of US policies past. If Obama is sincere in wanting to break the stalemate of the Middle East's core conflict, he will have to launch the US relationship with Israel on to radically new lines.

Attack on the Chrysler Capitalists

The Obama administration singled out hedge funds as the bad guys this week in its attempt to reorganize Chrysler.

The accusation falls comfortably into the administration's view that unfettered capitalists on Wall Street and poor planning by short-sighted CEO's are responsible for our financial problems.

Reacting to the setback, President Obama took dead aim at the few capitalists left: the owners of some of Chrysler's securitized bank debt – hedge funds and private investors – who scuttled the plan.

He described these "holdouts" as unwilling to make the sacrifices that the company, the banks, the workers, the pensioners (all on the government dole) and the taxpayers had been prepared to make for the good of the country.

GERMAN MEDIA REMOVES STORY CLAIMING IRAN THREATENED TO DESTROY ISRAEL IN 11 DAYS.

N-TV ran a story a couple days ago about an Israeli TV broadcast which supposedly showed Iranian general chief of staff Attalah Slahi announcing that Iran would destroy Israel in 11 days.

Setting aside the question of why Attalah Slahi would make such a stupid and provocative statement to an Israeli at a time when Israel is desperate to start a war between the US and Iran, there were immediate questions raised about the accuracy of the Israeli translation, given prior history of intentional mistranslations when Israel provides Arab news stories to the west.

It appears those questions were justified.

NY Fed in Bed with Goldman - Fed chair holds Goldman stock

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York shaped Washington's response to the financial crisis late last year, which buoyed Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and other Wall Street firms. Goldman received speedy approval to become a bank holding company in September and a $10 billion capital injection soon after.

During that time, the New York Fed's chairman, Stephen Friedman, sat on Goldman's board and had a large holding in Goldman stock, which because of Goldman's new status as a bank holding company was a violation of Federal Reserve policy.

UN pushing Israel toward legal proceedings

In pursuit of the case of Israeli war crimes, the United Nations moves to report to the Security Council that UN facilities in Gaza had been targeted willfully.

After the United Nations Works and Relief Agency (UNRWA) compound became the target of GPS-guided Israeli mortars on January 15, the UN set up a commission to bring Israeli human rights violations in Gaza out into the open.

The commission -- led by the former British secretary-general of human rights group Amnesty International, Ian Martin -- assembled a report on Israeli actions in Gaza for submission to the Security Council.

"Israel deliberately fired at UN institutions even though it knew it was forbidden", read the report.

ISRAELI MISSILES HAUNT PALESTINIAN KID

“If they could indict heads of states (an allusion to Sudanese President Omar al Bashir), they should likewise be able to indict and prosecute Israeli war criminals who have murdered and maimed our children on no other ground than the fact that they accord little or no value to a non-Jewish life,” he fumes.

“It is not a matter of seeking compensation. As you see, nothing could compensate Mohammad for what befell him.

“But justice must be served, and I am determined to go to any extent to see that justice prevails.”

TIME TO SAY “NO” TO ISRAELI FASCISM

Israel and her supporters are making rabid efforts to enhance the ugly image of the new Israeli government. That government, as we all know, is composed of manifestly fascist parties based on Jewish supremacy and racist disregard for the Palestinian people which has been on the receiving end of Zionist savagery and brutality for over sixty one years.

This month, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and his thuggish Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman are going to try to convince the leaders of western countries that Palestinians don’t really need freedom and liberty and human rights and that, like all animals, all they need is bread and some other food supplements.

Buying Brand Obama

By Chris Hedges

Barack Obama is a brand. And the Obama brand is designed to make us feel good about our government while corporate overlords loot the Treasury, our elected officials continue to have their palms greased by armies of corporate lobbyists, our corporate media diverts us with gossip and trivia and our imperial wars expand in the Middle East. Brand Obama is about being happy consumers. We are entertained. We feel hopeful. We like our president. We believe he is like us. But like all branded products spun out from the manipulative world of corporate advertising, we are being duped into doing and supporting a lot of things that are not in our interest.

Chinese workers urged to puff up economy by smoking

CHINESE STATE employees are being asked to do their patriotic duty to support the local economy – by lighting up a cigarette. And no butts.

In Gongan county in Hubei province, the order has come down from above that employees of all local government departments, organisations, service centres and corporations must consume at least 23,000 cartons of cigarettes this year.

This translates into 400 cartons for most departments and state companies, and 140 cartons for each school.

In a law which gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “the state picks up the tab”, cadres are required to smoke local brands, and anyone smoking other brands can be fined. The smoking allowance aims to boost the regional economy by encouraging more consumption of local cigarettes.

Intensive investigation of the newly identified H1N1 virus shows that the illness continues to be mild in New York City so far. “We have looked daily at every hospital and every intensive care unit in the city within the past 10 days,” said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, New York City Health Department Commissioner, “and we have yet to find a single patient with severe illness from H1N1 (SO).”

Lawyers, judges and tenant advocates say the staggering economy has sent an increasing number of middle-class renters across New York City to the brink of eviction, straining the legal and financial services of city agencies and charities. Suddenly, residents of middle-class havens like Rego Park in Queens and Riverdale in the Bronx are crowding into the city’s already burdened housing courts, long known as poor people’s court.

Say you have $100 which falls to $50, a 50 percent decline. A 50 percent increase will only put you up to $75, $25 short of the original $100. That is why even though the market has rallied a stunning 34 percent in 7 weeks, we are still down 42 percent from the peak reached in August of 2007.

Will the FDA Kill Adult Stem Cell Medicine?

The purpose of employing autologous cells is to prevent rejection of histo-incompatible cells by the patient's immune system. But it's also possible that these new therapies could slip from our grasp, at least in the US. If we're not careful, these therapies could become the exclusive domain of the pharmaceutical industry, as regulated by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This could push the availability of this tool kit 15 to 20 years into the future. The opportunity-cost in terms of morbidity and mortality could be catastrophic.

Go West Young Man

In the book for which Elie Wiesel is most famous, namely Night, which is recommended reading in public schools across this country, Wiesel paints an horrendous picture of life in Auschwitz from April 1944 to January 1945 when he was there. Although many hundreds of thousands of Jews were supposedly gassed there during this time, Wiesel makes no mention of gassings or gas chambers anywhere in his book, as Jürgen Graf and Robert Faurisson have pointed out to us. He does however claim to have seen flames from the chimneys and Dr. Mengele wearing a monocle. Both claims are clearly lies.

Britain Tries to Block CIA Rendition Case

British High Court judges are expected to rule this week on whether a document by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency can be publicly disclosed, thus opening the courthouse door to a lawsuit charging that the British government was complicit in facilitating the rendition of a British resident by the CIA, which tortured and secretly imprisoned him at Guantánamo Bay.

The Torturer’s Apprentice

The revelations of a once secret 2006 report by the International Committee of the Red Cross on the use of torture and "cruel, inhuman, or degrading punishment" on prisoners at Guantánamo and secret CIA jails came as a shock to many. This is odd, because anyone with a keyboard, modem and half a brain, quickly discovered that in the panicky aftermath of 9/11, the West had forged a pact with the Devil. It was not only Dick Cheney who felt the call of the dark side - it was virtually the entire governing class of America, Britain and Australia. Yes, even Australia, a former penal colony that started life as Britain’s Guantanamo.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is the worst revelation of all; that we are the bad guys in this conflict. America, Britain, Israel, and Australia are this century's versions of Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Far-rightist MK: Hitler Youth pope not welcome in Israel

National Union MK Michael Ben Ari declared Tuesday that next week's visit by Pope Benedict XVI, whom he referred to as a former member of the Nazis' youth movement, would be an insult to the memory of Holocaust victims.

"A state welcome for the pope would be turning our backs on the millions of Jews who were killed in the shadow of the Christian religion of grace and mercy," Ben Ari was quoted as saying by Israeli media. "This pope was a member of the Hitler Youth."

FLASHBACK - ISRAELI TORTURE IS SYSTEMATIC AND "LEGAL"

Torture of Palestinians is not only routine and systematic, in it actually sanctioned by the Israeli legal system that has been twisted to serve Israeli policies. Going back to the Shinbet scandal of the early 1980's, even more sadistic forms of torture have given way to the kinds of 'legalized' torture methods outlined in this important article from one of the few independent and courageousmedia sources in Israel, The Alternative Information Center (AIC). Among the reasons the Israelis get away with such systematic torture of Palestinians is that hardly anyone is willing to protest. The so-called "Palestinian Authority" practices similar and even worse torture techniques, as do nearly all of the Arab governments in the region -- so they are hardly in a position to protest.

Could Monsanto Be Responsible for One Indian Farmer's Death Every Thirty Minutes?

Over the past decade, millions of Indian farmers have been promised radically increased harvests and income if they switch from their traditional age tested farming methods to genetically modified (GM) Bt cotton seeds. So, they borrow money to buy GM seeds, which need certain pesticides, which requires more money. And when rain fall is sparse, the GM crops fare far worse than traditional crops – a fact that these farmers oftentimes don’t learn until it’s too late and they’re standing there with failed crops, spiraling debts, and no income.

Monsanto has been ruthless in their drive to use India as a testing ground for genetically modified crops, and it gives us a very clear picture of what could be in store for the rest of the world’s small farmers if they’re allowed to continue.

Gaza patients questionings 'rise'

The number of Palestinians forced to provide information before being let out of Gaza for medical treatment is rising, an Israeli group has reported.

In the first three months of 2009 more than 400 patients were interrogated, Physicians for Human Rights says.

They say Israeli security services are involved in a systematic attempt to recruit Palestinians as collaborators.
