A standard dejection in the IRS help line

Andrew Concha came out into the hall holding a purple sign. He checked his watch — 11:04 a.m. — then calculated how many people could be seen before the Taxpayer Assistance Center closed at 4:30 p.m. He placed the sign behind the 17th customer, signaling to the other 30 or so in line that their chance of seeing a specialist that day was slim.

“I’m not technically turning them away yet,” Concha explained. “I’m letting them know it may not be in their interest to wait three to four hours to see someone.”

With Tax Day approaching, it was the best the IRS could offer.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Taxes are obfuscated and confusing to conceal the special exemptions for the rich, and to distract people from wondering if in fact a direct non-apportioned tax on the people is even legal to begin with.

THIS COULD SINK BANKS IN GREECE, PORTUGAL, SPAIN, AND ITALY

The European Commission is now contemplating pulling the rug out from under the banking miracles in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy.

In total, there are €40 billion in deferred tax assets dressed up as core capital in the banks of these four countries. That’s how precarious these banks are. At one unnamed bank in Greece, these deferred tax assets account for 30% to 40% of its core capital. Without Greece’s special state guarantee, these deferred tax assets could not be part of the core capital, and without this additional “capital,” the bank would be toast.

But on paper, these crummy sorts of assets do a nice job of propping up these banks. And that’s why these four countries have bent over backwards to make it happen. Why bail out rotten banks with real money when fake assets can accomplish the same?

Webmaster's Commentary:

More taxpayer bailouts coming in Europe in the not too distant future, I see.

Apr 08 06:28

COST OF NEGATIVE BANK RATES

Only a dullard would believe that banking institutions will not eventually drop their interest rate pay outs to depositors, as their own costs are taxed or central banking policy demands that the value of the currency must be diminished.

The example that Australia Wants To Tax Bank Deposits: Will The US Follow? This report poses an obvious question for anyone keeping money in the depository system.

“Several months ago, the government of Australia proposed to tax bank deposits up to $250,000 at a rate of 0.05% (5 basis points). To be clear, the proposal seems to plan on taxing the banks based on the amount of deposits they’re holding—but it’s pretty obvious this will be passed on to consumers in the form of lower interest rates.”

1. Taxes on bank deposits are generally the same as negative interest rates.
2. Taxes always start small… then increase over time.
3. Taxes are rarely used for their stated purpose.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Please don't think "it can't happen here; it will. It is only a matter of time.

Afghan soldier shoots at US troops

The incident happened after a meeting between Afghan provincial leaders and a US embassy official in the compound of the provincial governor in Jalalabad, said General Fazel Ahmad Sherzad, police chief for eastern Nangarhar province.

The Afghan soldier opened fire "right after the US official had left", he said.

The American troops immediately returned fire, killing the Afghan soldier, he added.

It is the second insider attack this year. An Afghan soldier killed three American contractors on January 29.

The Afghan soldier was identified by Gen Sherzad as Abdul Azim, from Laghman province.

U.S. plan to shut down cell phones and internet in energency. Court ruled no disclosure. Flashback: U.S. condemns cell phone and internet shut down in Egypt and Syria

It seems the courts through a Freedom of information act lawsuit is standing by the U.S. government and not allowing the release of the U.S. governments plan to shut down the internet and cell phone service (plan SOP303) in times of emergencies. In other words if there was civil unrest.

The reason why the lawsuit was filed in the first place was due to when all cell phone service was cut in San Francisco during the BART unrest.

EPIC asked the court to revisit its ruling, arguing that the decision, "if left in place, would create an untethered 'national security' exemption'" in FOIA law. On Friday, the court ordered (PDF) the government to respond—a move that suggests the appellate court might rehear the case.

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a moratorium that will restrict the use of new pesticides that have been blamed for declining bee populations, though the policy does not apply to products currently on the market.

California Water Authorities Using Smart Meter Data as Evidence to Impose Fines

Essentially, consumption of utilities in your home is being big brother tracked and traced at all times on the smart grid.

Sure, it was sold to everyone as a “smart” solution for keeping consumption in check, that it would decrease utility bills because people could use it to check out how much they use and find smart ways to cut down. (How many people are really even doing that, by the way?)

Not only is this going to be used to serve up “peak pricing” models against the population — to price electricity and water higher during times of higher consumption by the population — it’s also going to be used to allow the people to tattle on themselves via their data, a set up that will come with heavy financial consequences.

As we can see happening now in California during its historic drought, smart meters are also being used by authorities to seek people out and impose fines.

Why Rand Paul’s Campaign Will Never Succeed

Earlier today Rand Paul announced to his supporters in Louisville, Kentucky, that he is officially running for President. He stood before the enthusiastic crowd, and spoke of defeating the Washington machine, reining in special interests, and returning our government to its constitutional limits. While these are all worthy goals, one must wonder if he has taken the right approach.

See, Rand is quite similar to his father in many ways, but he’s also quite different.

Psychological Warfare and the Fragmentation of the Psyche

The subject of dissociative identity disorder and the fracturing of the psyche is a complex topic that is becoming more mainstream through alternative media. The causes, nature and extent of the disorder are still shrouded in mystery, though modern medicine and psychology do have a lot to say about the matter. One of the reasons the disorder is controversial is that it doesn’t seem to fit well in the dominant materialist/biologist reductionism upon which mass science is built. Given the presupposition of modern science that the psyche is entirely equated with the brain itself, the assumptions are thus that any possible solution to mental problems of this nature can only be remedied or suppressed through the addition of, and rearrangement of, molecular compounds.

The Brutal Bio Of Tom Cotton

The Brutal Bio Of Tom Cotton – Kristol’s Guy

Think: William Kristol, the big-time neocon who merged Sarah Palin onto John McCain’s ticket in 2008. Think of the same neocon whose New York Times op-ed columns were eliminated after the editors finally lost patience with his many factual errors. Think of the same neocon who seeks relevancy as editor of the right-wing Weekly Standard as well as the smarmy guest on TV shows. And think of the warrior neocon who was a major figure in calling for the Bush invasion of Iraq and who has now supports a re-invasion of the that country.

Now, think of the neocon as a board member of the Emergency Committee for Israel with considerable sway among other donor allies.
***
So when you see Cotton’s name, you need to know more about what the political world is now talking about, the man who wanted to imprison NY Times editor Bill Keller and two reporters over something the Times printed.

As a congressman in 2013 Cotton also proved he can be damned cruel.

The real reason Netanyahu and the GOP hate this Iran deal

1) The nuclear architecture Iran gets to keep is way too big.
2) Sanctions relief will enable Iranian aggression.
3) The deal isn't strict enough in key areas.
4) Inspections won't be as strong as you think.

The thing about some of these arguments is that they are basically objections to any feasible deal with Iran. Many critics, particularly Netanyahu, have taken pains to deny that they oppose any deal altogether — but it seems quite clearly that they do.

Shell swallows BG for $70 billion

A new era of oil mega-mergers? Shell swallows BG for $70 billion
Collapse in prices creates backdrop for biggest energy merger in over a decade.

Royal Dutch Shell RD agreed to buy smaller rival BG Group BGG for $70 billion in the first oil super-merger in more than a decade to close the gap with the world’s largest oil firm U.S. ExxonMobil Inc.

In a joint statement, the two firms said Shell would pay a mix of cash and shares that would value each BG share at around 1,350 pence, more than 50% over its average price during the last three months.

Britain’s BG had a market capitalisation of $46 billion as of Tuesday’s close, while Shell was worth $202 billion. Exxon, the world’s largest oil company by market value, was worth $360 billion.

America: Bankrupt And On Borrowed Time

Thomas Jefferson is credited with the following sage advice, “The central bank is an institution of the most deadly hostility existing against the Principles and form of our Constitution. If the American People allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the People of all their Property until their Children will wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.” And so it seems sometimes the answer is right in front of us all along and we just fail to see it.

On suspicion of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble", the five women face a jail sentence of up to five years, and so Clinton, using direct social media channels, tweeted, "The detention of women's activists in China must end. This is inexcusable". China's Foreign Ministry said the matter was an internal affair.

Firefox disables “opportunistic encryption” to fix HTTPS-crippling bug

The bug was introduced in Firefox 37, which was released last week and introduced a new feature that could encrypt Web connections even when servers didn't support HTTPS protocols. While opportunistic encryption lacks some of the crucial protections of the transport layer security protocol, it was still hailed by many as a watershed moment that moved the world closer to an Internet where all data receives end-to-end encryption. That in theory could make it harder for criminal and state-sponsored adversaries to monitor or manipulate the communications of end users.

Now, Mozilla developers have disabled opportunistic crypto in the just-released Firefox 37.0.1 after they discovered that the implementation released last week introduced a critical bug. The vulnerability, which resides in functionality related to opportunistic crypto, in some cases gave attackers an easy way to present fake TLS certificates that wouldn't be detected by the browser.

BEX ALERT - So Far, 2015 Is Hottest Year Yet

The dramatically rapid melting of the earth's poles is the biggest news in this month's climate dispatch.

Increasingly fast melting in Antarctica, which will be discussed in more detail below, is now expected to increase sea levels by 10 feet worldwide in less than 100 years, according to recent NASA satellite calculations.

This will "recurve" heavily populated coastlines and reshape the world in which we live, according to one geophysicist with whom Truthout spoke. In addition, a second geophysicist, from Harvard, said that parts of Antarctica are thawing out so quickly that the icy continent has become "ground zero of global climate change, without a doubt."

BEX ALERT - Climate change deniers are selling - and we're buying

Directed by Robert Kenner and based on a book of the same name by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, "Merchants of Doubt" is a meticulous examination of the disinformation campaign mounted against climate change, which is - let's not fool around here - a well-documented phenomenon.

Nothing makes this point more plainly than a 2004 article by Oreskes, published in Science Magazine: Oreskes decided to review the scholarly work on climate change, some 928 abstracts published between 1993 and 2003. None rejected the consensus of the scientific community, that climate change is occurring and that the activities of humanity have contributed to that change.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Several record-settings winters in a row (we even had a blizzard here in Hawaii 3 weeks ago) and still the Carbonazis are pushing their human-caused global warming hoax, in a desperate bid to salvage their reputations (and collect a carbon tax).

Climate always changes. And climate is dominated by solar output (which is at a 100 year low) and the slowly oscillating shape of Earth's orbit, changing from elliptical (where we get the ice ages) to more circular(where we get the interglacial periods) and back again. So until Al Gore and his ilk can control the sun, or move the Earth in its orbit, there isn't a thing they can do about climate change. They are as impotent as Nero, who had his soldiers flog the ocean for daring to spoil his beach picnic with a rising tide!

Contrary to the hype, warming (were it actually happening) is a good thing, and the Roman and Medieval warm periods were times of abundant food, which allowed the flowering of Roman and later Renaissance civilization.

There is one effect that has been noticed following an uptick in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Plants are growing faster and larger, providing more food, and deserts are shrinking. The Earth is getting greener, because CO2 is not a pollutant, but an essential component of the chain of life on Earth.

Corker Says Support Growing to Give Congress Vote on Iran Deal

The Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Sunday he’s within a few votes of being able to override a threatened presidential veto of his bill giving Congress a say in any nuclear deal with Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Congress can declare or refuse to declare a war. Short of that, the Constitution states that foreign policy is exclusively the jurisdiction of the White House and the US Department of State. Every member of Congress championing Israel's agenda against Iran is in violation of the Logan Act.

I hope all Americans are watching the Congress as they undermine the office of the Presidency to whore themselves to a foreign leader!

Thorium Remix - Is Thorium a Safe and Extraordinarily Alternative to Traditional Nuclear Power?

Thorium is readily available & can be turned into energy without generating transuranic wastes. Thorium’s capacity as nuclear fuel was discovered during WW II, but ignored because it was unsuitable for making bombs. A liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) is the optimal approach for harvesting energy from Thorium, and has the potential to solve today’s energy/climate crisis. LFTR is a type of Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (Th-MSR). This video summarizes over 6 hours worth of thorium talks given by Kirk Sorensen and other thorium technologists.

The editorial, titled “The Crimes of Terrorists” (4/2/2015), should more accurately be titled “The Crimes of the U.S. and Its Allies Should Go Unpunished.”

Mitch McConnell: Congress to 'respond legislatively' to Iran nuclear bill

Fresh off a trip to the Middle East, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is insisting that Congress get a chance to review and approve a nuclear deal with Iran.

"To the detriment of international security […] the Obama administration has always approached the goal of these negotiations as reaching the best deal that is acceptable to Iran, rather than what should be our national goal: ending Iran's nuclear program," the Kentucky Republican said in a statement Monday.

McConnell visited Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Afghanistan last week with a Senate delegation. On Thursday, a framework for a nuclear deal with Iran, the U.S. and five other world powers was announced — much to the dismay of many Republican lawmakers.

The Arrival of Man-Made Earthquakes

The New Yorker has a long investigative report on a recent geological phenomenon: man-made earthquakes. The article describes how scientists painstakingly gathered data on the quakes, and then tried to find ways to communicate the results — which are quite definitive — to politicians who often have financial reasons to disbelieve them. Quoting: "Until 2008, Oklahoma experienced an average of one to two earthquakes of 3.0 magnitude or greater each year. (Magnitude-3.0 earthquakes tend to be felt, while smaller earthquakes may be noticed only by scientific equipment or by people close to the epicenter.) In 2009, there were twenty. The next year, there were forty-two. In 2014, there were five hundred and eighty-five, nearly triple the rate of California.
