US Faces ‘Test of Power’ in Trying to Enforce Iran Sanctions - Ex-EU Consultant

US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo face an uphill struggle to force other nations to abandon their oil trade with Iran, former European Union consultant Paolo von Schirach told Sputnik.

On Monday, the US government announced that it would not renew waivers for Iranian oil importers that are valid through 1 May, 2019. The waivers were granted to eight countries: China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey in November 2018.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters at the United Nations on Wednesday that Iran will continue to sell its oil despite US sanctions and survive Washington’s attempt to deal with Tehran through oppression.

President Rouhani: Iran will not talk with US as long as it keeps lying

President Hassan Rouhani says Washington’s claims of seeking negotiations with Iran are “mere lies” and that the United States, in fact, intends to force the Iranian nation to its knees.

Contrary to what some are trying to promote, “the US does not possess the willingness for negotiations at all,” the president told a cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday.

“The actions that it is taking are aimed at defeating the Iranian nation” and “making a return” to Iran, he added, referring to Washington’s ample presence and influence in the country prior to the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Rouhani said the US subversive measures against Iran have all failed on international, regional, and political arenas, and that its propagandist attempts targeting the Islamic Republic have all been defeated.

Washington has been and will likewise be frustrated in its anti-Iran economic drive, he added.

The West's irrational fear of Iran is a disaster waiting to happen

While western regimes craft a fresh humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, their corporate and state-owned media and corrupted think-tanks embody what Shakespeare's Lorenzo describes as "this muddy vesture of decay" – and, true to form, frustrate attempts to provide voice to their latest subaltern victims.

Increasingly vitriolic voices, from Paris to Washington, reveal exasperation and express a need to intimidate and justify the eviction of the many increasingly difficult tenants of the Fifth Estate.

Just as advanced capitalism has successfully transformed the first four estates into an almost homogeneous, postmodern utopia for well-heeled Wall Street and Ivory Tower dwellers – amid a deluge of conspiratorial narratives of existential threats – western regime-affiliated intellectual elites vigorously promote a "benign" monopoly in this lucrative piece of real estate.

The Path To War With Iran Is Paved With Sanctions

The Trump administration is laying siege to Iran. Taking pages from the Iraq War playbook, senior officials paint a picture of a rogue, outlaw, terrorist regime bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and whose “malign activities” are the cause of all the chaos in the Middle East. They know what they are doing. They have done it before. They are building a case for war.

The “maximum pressure” campaign by the White House, Treasury Department, and State Department accelerated this week with the announcement that the United States would force China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Turkey to cease all imports of Iranian oil or face severe U.S. sanctions. The goal is to cut to zero all of Iran’s oil exports, which account for some 40 percent of its national income. This strategy is unlikely to force the capitulation or collapse of the regime, but it very likely could lead to war.

Neocons Keep Pushing Iran... What if Iran Blocked the Straight of Hormuz?

The Trump administration once again has graphically demonstrated that in the young, turbulent 21st century, “international law” and “national sovereignty” already belong to the Realm of the Walking Dead.

As if a deluge of sanctions against a great deal of the planet was not enough, the latest “offer you can’t refuse” conveyed by a gangster posing as diplomat, Consul Minimus Mike Pompeo, now essentially orders the whole planet to submit to the one and only arbiter of world trade: Washington.

First the Trump administration unilaterally smashed a multinational, UN-endorsed agreement, the JCPOA, or Iran nuclear deal. Now the waivers that magnanimously allowed eight nations to import oil from Iran without incurring imperial wrath in the form of sanctions will expire on May 2 and won’t be renewed.

Saudi executions: A message to Iran or a blow to Saudi Shia?

The killings will not put an end to the peaceful protest and activism of the Saudi Shia community, which has been struggling for equality for over half a century

On Tuesday, Saudi official sources announced the mass execution of 37 prisoners, including one rather abhorrent crucifixion, carried out after execution.

The prisoners were lumped together and charged with several ambiguous charges such as terrorism, conspiracy to undermine security, spying, spreading Shia Islam and murder. The crucified man was accused of murdering a woman and conspiring to murder another one.

At least 34 of the executed prisoners are Shia activists, professionals, religious scholars and a number of young men who were detained when they were minors

But please don’t ask yourself whether the 15 murderers who plotted and killed journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October were amongst them.

None of those had been named or charged openly in a Saudi court>>>

11 April 2019: The West's irrational fear of Iran is a disaster waiting to happen

If the Trump regime miscalculates, the house can easily come crashing down on its head

Iran Not Backing Down: IRGC Navy Vows to Block US Ships from Important Waterway

The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abbas Mousavi, issued a statement on Monday that warned of “adverse consequences” if the U.S. ended their sanctions waiver on the Persian Gulf nation’s oil imports.

“Given the illegal nature of the U.S. sanctions, Iran has not and will not consider any value for the waivers granted,” Mousavi said. “However, in view of the negative effects in politics of these sanctions … Iranian Foreign Ministry has been continuously in touch with relevant domestic institutions while holding comprehensive consultations with many foreign partners, including Europeans.”

The Trump administration announced on Monday that they would be cancelling waivers to eight countries buying oil from Iran as they tighten the economic blockade against the Persian Gulf nation.

Mousavi said Iran will take appropriate actions to counter the U.S. move, adding that his government will make it public.

Trump

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani downplayed the effects of Washington's decision to end sanctions waivers on Iran's oil sales, and dismissed talks with the US administration which uses the language of threat and force to demand negotiations.

"We have always been people who favor talks and diplomacy as we are people of war and defense. Negotiations will be possible when all pressures are taken off, they (the US) apologize for their illegal measures and when there is mutual respect. Undoubtedly, demands by a knife-stabbing person who lies and is using force to hold talks is not accepted and we do not negotiate with a knife-stabbing person and with the formula of knife-stabbing, as accepting such negotiations means humiliation and surrender," President Rouhani said, addressing a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Trump Administration's Iran Policy Will Hasten Imperial Decline

There was a postwar order, but was it liberal? Like most political orders, it looked much better on paper than it did in practice and to the core members of the order than those on the margins…

Liberal values were only remotely attached to the postwar institutions. Sovereign equality did not translate into a liberal world order. The postwar institutions were run by the most powerful countries, with middle and lesser powers either shunted to the back of the room or locked out altogether…Third World now comprised most of the world’s states, but it was on the outside looking in. Western states enjoyed democracy and the rule of law, but the U.S. and the former colonial masters undermined rather than supported democracy and human rights elsewhere. Some Western states and analysts presumed that the global order must have some legitimacy because there were no great (or at least successful) revolts by the Third World, but they mistook coercion and the lack of alternative for consent…

Iraq 'will be deprived of power' if it cuts Iran gas imports

raq's electricity minister said on Monday that the country will be "deprived of power" if the US decides to end its sanction waivers that has allowed Baghdad to purchase Iranian energy such as gas and electricity.

The US has granted eight countries a six-month exemption allowing them buy Iranian hydrocarbon products despite Washington's embargo, which took effect in November, but Washington announced the end of the waiver on Monday.

Iraq has received separate extensions to continue importing Iranian gas since the imposition of the economic embargo.

Baghdad was granted an extra 90-day waiver in March and it remains unclear whether it will be extended once again.

“If this stops then we will be deprived of 4,000 megawatts of electricity,” Musab Al Mudaris, spokesman for the Iraqi ministry of electricity, said on Monday.

The waiver stipulates that the countries must take steps to reduce Iranian purchases and move towards ending imports.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, the US government wants to attempt to get Iraq to stop buying Iran's oil?!?

How, really, are they going to do this?!? Re-invade Iraq, with an Iraq2.0, "golden cut" invasion?!?

As French US envoy calls Israel ‘apartheid state,’ Trump’s Palestine deal looks all but doomed

US President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century,” aimed at resolving the decades-long conflict between Israel and Palestine, looks dead in the water, as speculation continues that the plan will be far more favorable to Israel.
Gérard Araud, France’s outgoing envoy to the US, dubbed Israel an “apartheid state” in a farewell interview with the Atlantic magazine on Friday and suggested that the secret plan is “very close to what the Israelis want” and 99 percent “doomed to fail.”

Still, Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, are exerting “immense pressure” on the Palestinians to accept Trump’s deal, a senior Fatah official told Iran’s Press TV on Monday. Those countries are “using all means, including political and financial blackmail” to force Palestinians into agreeing with the deal “despite all the dangers it poses to the Palestinian cause.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, Aurad has this nailed perfectly; and no amount of money can possibly get the Palestinians to voluntarily give up what is left... of their homeland.

No more waivers: The United States will try to force Iranian oil exports to zero

In tightening sanctions on Iran, the Trump administration moved on Monday to isolate Tehran economically and undercut its power across the Middle East. But the clampdown has complicated relations with China at a particularly sensitive moment.

The decision to stop five of Iran’s biggest customers from buying its oil was an audacious strike at Tehran’s lifeline — one million barrels of oil exports daily, fully half of which go to China. The order was also aimed at India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, all countries that trade robustly with the United States.

All are also partners with the United States on major security and diplomatic issues that do not involve Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, let me get this straight; Is President Trump is attempting to use some kind of "economic force against China", so that it yields on purchasing Iran's oil?!?

Good luck with that, Mr. President!! And BTW, I was just wondering; what do you up your sleeve, in order to be able to do this?!?

And BTW, could your timing of this threat come at a worse possible time during the US/China economic negotiations?!?

I think not.

And also against the countries of India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, which have been buying from American vendors?!?

Sir, forgive me, but this bites, BIG-TIME!!

So, sir, what are you prepared to do, particularly if China doesn't want to budge against your embargo of Iranian oil?!?

Are you seriously looking at, having US sailors "board foreign ships", to see if they are carrying any Iranian oil?!?

Sir, in case no one among your "advisors" has happened to mention it, the interdiction of a foreign ship in international waters, is very close to creating to a declaration of war against that country.

Perhaps a "false flag" to be blamed on Russia or China may be more to your liking.

But when President Bush lied about Iraq having alleged "weapons of mass destruction", (which, of course, he didn't, but that was the lie upon which which he staked the invasion and occupation of Iraq.) was the moment where I lost all faith in what any American governing bodies were saying, including the Executive; Judicial; Pentagon; and its Surveillance.

So what are we looking at here, Mr. President, a nuclear war against China, and Russia?!? Don't laugh; Paul Craig Roberts warned us a couple of years ago, that plans actually exist to make this happen.

This guy is one of the most sober-sided writer/reporter on the US political scene, and is quite credible.

Paul Craig Roberts: US plans exist to nuke Russia and China

War, even when the biggest US weaponry makers believe, and experience has proven them right, that their "donations" to various covert and overt political causes, makes them "bullet-proof" in terms of any governmental prosecution against them, for shoddy, outdated merchandise which does not behave as advertised?!?

Sir, I give you... the Lockheed-Martin F-35s, which is still a hot mess
technically:

August 2018: The Pentagon is Down-Playing Serious Problems with the F-35, watchdog says

January 2019: Stealth F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Still has some serious Problems

March 2019: F-35 FAR FROM READY TO FACE CURRENT OR FUTURE THREATS

From January, 2019:F-35 Logistics System resulting in Lost Missions

February, 2019: F-35 Fighter Jets will only be able to fly one quarter of expected life, due to Structural Issues

None of this information is confidential, having been previously published, both in print, and on-line. And please look them up for yourself; I am not telling anything that people already don't know, if they have been following the "process" of the evolution of the F-35.

Mr. President, you really need to think about this, as critically as you are able; because right now, in Spring of 2019, the US military does not have the weaponry; the troop strength; the manufacturing, or the money to make such a war conclude with a good outcome for this country.

So, as someone who cares about this country deeply, I am asking you: please, President Trump, don't look at a war against both China and Russia; the US may not fare too well, if this is, in fact, the plan.

And here is another little "caveat" to the above:

China Won't Find Lost F-35 stealth Fighter,

The article, Mr. President, continues to state: "The U.S. and Japanese militaries are dismissing the possibility that China will find Japan’s missing F-35A Lightning II aircraft before their own search parties.

“The Japanese have the lead there, and we’re working very collaboratively with them," acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Friday. "And we’ve got a capability if what they have doesn’t prove to be sufficient.”

When asked whether he was concerned China could get to the crash site first, Shanahan said: “No, I’m not.”

Somehow, I have a really hard time believing that last bit.

Brent crude oil price on Tuesday rose to its highest level this year, just hours after Washington decided not to renew waivers that allow eight countries to buy Iranian oil without facing the United States' punishment.
Brent, the international oil benchmark, rose 0.8 percent to $74.64 in early European trading on Tuesday, adding to gains on Monday to reach its highest level since early November.

On Monday, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US marker, crude futures hit their highest level since October 2018 at $65.95 per barrel before edging back to $65.89, which was still up 0.5 percent from their last settlement. On Tuesday, West Texas Intermediate increased 0.9 per cent to $66.13.

US Decision on Iran's Oil Exports May Destroy Nuclear Deal

The European Union regrets the United States' decision to halt waivers on sanctions against importers of Iranian oil, which may undermine the success of the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Maja Kocijancic said on Tuesday.

"We regret yesterday's announcement by the US not to renew all waivers. This further risks undermining the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action… . We, as the European Union, will continue to abide by the JCPOA as long as Iran continues the full and effective implementation of its nuclear-related commitments," Kocijancic told reporters.

Iran has warned Europeans, as the main beneficiaries of the agreement with the Islamic republic, that the nuclear deal between Tehran and the world powers will be in danger if European countries fail to fulfill their pledge to ease the US pressures and allow the Islamic Republic to reap the economic benefits of the deal.

“The imagination to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, with the help of God, will never be come true,” he said.

US will not reissue waivers for Iran oil imports

In an effort to increase economic pressure on Iran, US announces it is ending waivers for countries importing Iran oil.

The Trump administration on Monday told five countries - Japan, South Korea, Turkey, China and India - that they would no longer be exempt from US sanctions if they continued to import oil from Iran after their waivers ended on May 2.

"We're going to zero. We're going to zero across the board," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters after the White House made the announcement in a statement. "There are no (oil) waivers that extend beyond that period, full stop," he said, adding that there would be no grace period for those economies to comply.

The United States which has engaged in a maximum pressure campaign against Tehran since Donald Trump came to office, had been giving the countries time to wean themselves off Iranian oil, but has decided that waivers would no longer be issued.

it’s clear that the US desires to dismantle Iran and Venezuela’s supposedly interconnected influence networks in Latin America as the next step in fortifying “Fortress America“, and while “deep state” wars such as this one have been going on for decades, it’s hitherto unprecedented for any country to make such a crusade public since the end of the Old Cold War when the US used to make similar claims about the USSR and its communist proxies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The trajectory that US foreign policy has taken of late, should scare the stuffing out of reasonable people; a category within which I hope,, I still belong.

You have a President who appears, at this point in his Presidency, to be a President In Name only, has now been thoroughly subsumed by the US Deep State, and ever willing to do its bidding.

The Neocon Mouthpiece, the Mouth that Pours, belongs to no other than Mike Pompeo, who appears to let his Dominionist faith rule his foreign policy. If you haven't read the following article, perhaps now is the time to do so.

The Rapture and the Real World: Mike Pompeo Blends Beliefs and PolicyThe article goes on to state:

"Though Mr. Trump is secular, white evangelicals are a big part of his voter base, and some of his major foreign policy moves, planned or supported by Mr. Pompeo, are intended to shore up political support.

The most notable examples involve Israel. When Mr. Trump moved the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, evangelicals applauded.

Studies show that white evangelicals are much more likely than other Americans to believe that Israel fulfills a biblical prophecy. Known as Christian Zionists, they believe God promised the land to the Jews, and that the gathering of Jews in Israel is foretold in the prophecy of the rapture — the ascent of Christians into the kingdom of God."

Of course, Netanyahu just stands there, and smiles, knowing that whatever he wants from the US, he will get, even if it is a massive war against Iran, which will surely translate as a war against Russia, paid for only in American money, and American blood.

Mr. Pompeo talks about the rapture. “We will continue to fight these battles,” he said at a “God and Country Rally” in 2015, because there is a “never-ending struggle” until “the rapture.”

Folks, I am having a palm to forehead moment, at his having said this. This denotes ancient friends (the original Hebrews, not the Khazars who currently run Israel) and ancient enemies, with whom this flavor of Christianity wants to engage, militarily, like present day Iran, for no logical reason other than an horrific mis-read of what Christian "destiny" looks like.

What would be a "logical, sane " foreign policy, would be one of engaging, not enraging, potential geopolitical assets, like China and Russia; being a part of the belt and road economy; and learning to live within one's means as a nation.

But Dominionists (and I am certain Pompeo is one of these people), believe that by bringing the world into a living hell of a total world war, they will will pave the way for Jesus to come down, and transition all living faithful up to heaven, in what is described by them as, "THE RAPTURE".

And folks, if what I am about to post, doesn't give you the heebe-jeebies, I do not know what will. And the article is datelined last December

"Anyone wondering what the true impetus was behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision on Wednesday to unilaterally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital needed only to view the image of the president when he made the formal announcement" from Harretz:

The U.S. evangelical community is in raptures over Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel, believing it moves the world closer to Armageddon

The article continues to state: "Glittering Christmas decorations festooned across the White House hallway enveloped Trump, with Vice President Mike Pence deliberately – if a bit awkwardly – placed directly behind the president’s shoulder, ensuring that no camera angle could leave him out of the picture."

So folks, what we have here is a very religiously deranged person, setting US foreign policy, with unending visions of wars and more wars with which to "open the gates of both Heaven (and Hell) to attempt to achieve what Secretary of State Pompeo believes is the Bible's "last stand in Armageddon". He is, of course, aided and abetted in these manners by John Bolton, Security Council to the President.

So I submit to you; can a person whose religious fantasies rule his both life, and his illogically insane foreign policies, be a proper person to set US foreign policy, when ALL he wants, due to his eshatology, is to create a world where wars are certain, but responsible, fence-mending with potential allies is considered idiocy and lunacy?!?

Because folks, this completely off the course/on the skids path upon which we are moving, due to Pompeo's beliefs, will most likely see us at war with Russia; China; and God only knows what part of the rest of the world.

Right now, it is too damned bad that the US doesn't have a 25th Amendment equivalent to that for the President, for the Secretary of State; and it is high time that Trump see the reasons behind the wars Pompeo is trying to ignite, but are not necessary for the US or the World; they are, unfortunately, necessary for Pompeo's distorted view of the world, and its most dystopian future possible, to come to pass.

Zarif ‘Reminds’ European Powers Iran Can Enrich Uranium

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif issued a “reminder” Monday to European powers that Tehran is allowed to enrich uranium under its nuclear deal, after a senior French diplomat claimed otherwise.

“There is no prohibition on the enrichment of uranium by Iran,” Zarif tweeted.

His comments were addressed to France, Germany and Britain, signatories to the landmark 2015 accord with Tehran under which uranium enrichment is curtailed but not banned.

Zarif’s remark follows France’s ambassador to Washington declaring: “It’s false to say that at the expiration of the JCPOA (nuclear deal), Iran will be allowed to enriching uranium.”

Back on track: Railway linking Iran to Syria through Iraq

Plans to link the railway networks of Iran, Iraq and Syria have been revealed by a source at the Syrian Ministry of Transport.

“Now, the countries are working on the resumption of the project connecting the railways of Syria, Iran and Iraq,” the source told Al-Watan newspaper yesterday.

“[They] are determining the date of the meeting between the representatives of the countries to develop the points of view.”

The strategic project seeks to link Tehran and Baghdad to the ports in Syria’s north-western city of Latakia. Before the war, 97 per cent of construction of the project on the Syrian side was complete but, large tracts of the railways were bombed during the eight-year conflict.

Retired US Colonel: Israel Is Dragging the United States Into World War III

Israel is in the process of plunging America into a war with Iran that could destroy what’s left of the Middle East and ignite a third world war, Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, warned in Washington approximately a week ago.

Wilkerson, a retired army colonel who now teaches at Washington-area universities, didn’t hold back in his critique of where the status quo is leading the United States via its client state, Israel.

At the annual Israel lobby conference at the National Press Club, sponsored by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs and Institute for Research: Middle East Policy, Wilkerson explained that Israel is headed toward “a massive confrontation with the various powers arrayed against it, a confrontation that will suck America in and perhaps terminate the experiment that is Israel and do irreparable damage to the empire that America has become.”

Italian banking major to pay hefty US fine for Iran sanctions-busting

European subsidiaries of Italy’s biggest bank UniCredit have pleaded guilty to US charges of violating sanctions against Iran and other countries. The lender has agreed to pay $1.3 billion to settle the six-year probe.

UniCredit’s units in Germany, Austria and Italy admitted to illegally moving of hundreds millions of dollars via the US financial system on behalf of sanctioned entities, according to the US Treasury Department. The violations reportedly included sanctions programs against weapons of mass destruction proliferation.

TEHRAN (FNA) Time to Ditch US Dollar

The United States government has been using the dollar as a convenient weapon of choice to preserve its global economic and geopolitical position for many decades.

This has been evident through illegal sanctions for Iran, Russia and Venezuela, as well as members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

For instance, in the last week, and in a response to a potential passage of the bipartisan No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act, known as NOPEC, in Congress that would enable the US Justice Department to sue OPEC for coordinating production, Saudi Arabia threatened to sell its oil in currencies other than the dollar. It said the plan had been discussed with OPEC members and that Riyadh had communicated the threat to senior US energy officials. Then later, Riyadh denied the report that it was threatening to sell its oil in currencies other than the dollar for passing NOPEC.

The implications of this new development are immense>>>

New concerns Trump administration may be laying legal groundwork for military action against Iran

When Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the Trump administration would designate a branch of Iran’s military as a foreign terrorist organization Monday, he said, “The Trump administration is simply recognizing a basic reality.”

But critics say they are concerned that it may also be part of an effort to bend reality enough to provide legal justification for armed conflict with Iran.

“I am troubled that the administration can’t unequivocally say that you haven’t been given power. I can tell you explicitly, you have not been given power or authority by Congress to have war with Iran,” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told Pompeo on Wednesday.

ISRAEL STRIKES ‘IRANIAN TARGETS’ IN HOMS. ONLY SYRIAN MISSILE LAUNCHER FOUND TO BE DESTROYED

Overnight on April 13, warplanes of the Israeli Air Force delivered strikes on targets near the town of Masyaf in the Syrian province of Homs from Lebanese airspace.

According to the Syrian version of the events, most of Israeli missiles were intercepted, but the rest of them destroyed several buildings and injured at least 20 people, including 3 service members. Fragments of at least one Israeli missile were found near the Lebanese border.

The College of Management, the Scientific Research center and the Accounting School were among the targets inside Masyaf itself.

Russia is joining world countries to send humanitarian relief to Iranian floods survivors as inundations continue to cause heavy damage in large parts of the country.

“Responding to Iran’s request and in joint cooperation with Armenia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, humanitarian aid for the people hit by the floods has been sent,” reads Russia's Emergency Situation Ministry statement.

The ministry has dispatched four thousand tents, blankets and folding beds to its regional station in the Armenian capital Yerevan. The Russian government created the centre in 2015 in the city in a bid to serve as a regional basis for humanitarian aid for Armenia and surrounding countries.

Trump again overrules top brass

President Donald Trump has declared on more than one occasion that he’s smarter than America’s military leaders.

And with his unprecedented decision Monday to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist group, he’s setting up another test of that thesis.

Trump chose to overrule the Pentagon after National Security Adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo advised that the top brass' warnings about risks to U.S. troops are overblown, several officials with direct knowledge of the deliberations told POLITICO.

The president’s move came despite Pentagon officials’ warnings that it could lead to retaliatory attacks against U.S. troops by Iranian-backed forces in the Middle East and threats from Iranian leaders that U.S. troops could face “consequences.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that Pompeo and Bolton were the ones telling Trump to ignore the brass.

US Now Views Iran's Qassem Soleimani As "Equivalent" To ISIS Leader: Pompeo

During remarks early this week in a Fox News interview following Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) being formally designated by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that the US will view Iran's elite force just as it does ISIS.

Specifically Pompeo agreed that the commander of Iran's elite Quds Force, Maj Gen Qassem Soleimani, is a "terrorist" on the level of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during a Fox News interview on Monday.

The US recognition of annexation of the Golan Heights to Israel and designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization is a "stupid and unwise measure in support of a criminal group in the occupied territories", President Rouhani said, addressing a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

Netanyahu thanks Trump for ‘answering another of my important requests’ on eve of election

The foreign collusion story is mainstream. Not Russia. Israel. “I want to ask you about the timing of this,” David Greene said. “The response from from Israel was quick and I should say pretty jubilant. Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu… wrote on twitter in Hebrew that President Trump was ‘answering another of my important requests.’ Is that what’s happening here?

Foreign backed terrorism in Iran: Part one -US/Israeli backed Salafists in Iran

While terrorism is a phenomenon most of us have come in touch with during our lifetime, much of the coverage is shadowed by terrorism in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Iraq, where US backed terrorist groups have wreaked havoc in devastating the wars that have plagued these countries.

Nonetheless, terrorism is widespread across the region, even in Iran. Due to Iran’s relatively strong internal stability, terrorist groups have been unable to catch major headlines in the Islamic Republic as terrorist groups often conduct hit and run attacks or the occasional kidnappings of young drafted border guards and soldiers near the Pakistan/Afghanistan border areas as well as across Iran’s western borders towards Iraq. Some groups are motivated by separatist goals, while others are driven by religious extremism. In this first part I will cover terrorism across Iran’s eastern borders, one that is driven by the Salafist ideology.

Iranian delegation travels to Venezuela to discuss direct flight route

An Iranian delegation landed in Venezuela on Monday to discuss launching direct flights between the two countries, Venezuela's foreign minister said, as Tehran voices support for President Nicolas Maduro against the opposition backed by most Western countries.

A plane belonging to Mahan Air, a private Iranian airline accused by the West of transporting military equipment to Middle East war zones, landed in Caracas on Monday, and the two countries will discuss launching a direct flight "in the coming months," Minister Jorge Arreaza told reporters.

A White House official said the U.S. government viewed the launch of direct flights as a "politically motivated gesture."

"From our standpoint, there's clearly no commercial reason to establish this flight at this time," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Why Designating the Iranian Rev. Guards Terrorists Would Paint a Big Red Target on US Troops in Iraq

The notion is illogical because the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) is a state actor, not a non-state actor. Terrorists are civilians who commit violence against other civilians to achieve some political goal.

The IRGC is sort of like the US national guard. It isn’t the formal army, but it is an adjunct to it.

If the US has a problem with IRGC actions, they should accuse the Iranian government of war crimes. States commit war crimes. There are international laws and institutions for dealing with war crimes.

But the practical side of the issue is that Iraqi Shiite militias close to the IRGC are essentially the hosts and protectors of the some 5,000 US troops in Iraq.

Netanyahu Says Trump Named Iran Guards a Terror Group at His Request

In a Monday Tweet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked President Trump for declaring Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, saying that he had personally requested Trump’s move.

Netanyahu said that the move would keep the world safe from Iran, and would also serve the interests of Israel, saying he was glad Trump “acceeded to another one of my important requests.”

Netanyahu’s emphasis that this is all his idea, and Trump is giving him everything he wants, is clearly being done with an eye toward Tuesday’s election, as he attempts to convince voters that he is able to get concessions out of Trump no one else could.

Iran Designates US CENTCOM as Terrorists

Following President Trump decision to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a foreign terrorist organization, Iran has responded in kind, declaring US Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terror group on their own list.

The US move, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says was his request, is meant to allow the US to further target the Iranian military and those with ties to it. How much this will mean is unclear, as decades of US sanctions have cut such contact substantially.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement saying the US declaration was illegal and a major threat to regional stability. They did so in the context of their own retaliatory declaration.

The situation in Syria is remaining relatively stable amid the continued limited ISIS attacks on the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on the eastern bank of the Euphrates and ceasefire violations in the Idlib de-militarized zone.

Over the past few days, pro-militant sources have repeatedly claimed that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and even the Russian Aerospace Forces have delivered strikes on so-called “opposition targets” in northern Hama and southern Idlib. While these reports are mostly propaganda exaggerations, the situation there is in fact complicated with both sides attacking each other on more or less constant basis.

Pentagon’s Orwellian Madness: US Invades Iraq, Incites 60% Shiite Population, Blames Iran For Killing 608 US Troops!

When the Pentagon starts throwing around estimates of who got killed and how in its assorted wars in the Middle East, they are often wildly inaccurate. Nowhere was this more apparent than a new briefing this week on estimates in the 2003-2011 Iraq War.

Designed for Special Envoy Brian Hook to give hawkish speeches on Iran, the briefing estimated that Iran was "responsible" for the deaths of 608 US troopsduring the Iraq War. This was an upward revision from a 2015 estimate of 500, and seemingly was only done to allow Hook to bring it up now.

A more accurate estimate would, of course, be zero deaths. Despite years of anti-Iran rhetoric, the US has never conclusively pinned a single death on the Iranian government or its forces. Rather, these deaths are all loosely attributable to Iraqi Shi’ite factions.

Countries arming Saudi Arabia, partners in crimes against Yemenis: Iran

Iran has strongly condemned the latest deadly airstrikes by Saudi warplanes in Yemen that killed more than a dozen civilians, most of them schoolchildren, saying countries that are arming the aggressors are complicit in the crimes.

"Countries that have caused the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen by providing arms to the aggressors are accomplices in these crimes and must be held accountable for their support," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday.

He criticized the international community for remaining silent and indifferent to the atrocities committed by the Saudi-led coalition in its military campaign against Yemen and expressed sympathy with the families of victims.

The Iranian spokesperson called on the United Nations and countries involved in the Yemeni crisis to ramp up their efforts in order to put an immediate end to the attacks and adopt necessary measures to protect civilians, particularly women and children.

Trump's Neocons See Erdogan As Their Ticket To A Region-Wide MidEast War

Authored by Mike Whitney via The Unz Review,

Turkish troops and armored units are massed along Turkey’s southern border awaiting orders to invade northern Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to clear a ten mile-deep swath of land east of the Euphrates River in order to remove terrorist-linked militants (YPG) currently occupying the territory. The proposed offensive would put US Special Forces in the line of fire which significantly increases the likelihood of US casualties. If American troops are killed or wounded by the Turkish operation, Washington will respond in force leading to a potentially catastrophic face-off between the two NATO allies. The possibility of a violent clash between Turkey and the United States has never been greater than it is today.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder, in terms of the neocons, if plans are already in play for a "false flag" here, to be blamed on Turkey, as the US "provocation/justification" for an attack against it.

Dicey in the extreme?? But possible, as a way of distracting American voters who are fed up with Russiagate; stagnating salaries; and the horrific hardening of political lines in this country where, to some people, beating up someone who disagrees with you is a perfectly rational thing to do?!?

UN Nuclear Watchdog Could Be in North Korea Within Weeks of a Deal

While diplomacy seems to be slowing down in recent weeks, there are still high hopes that a peace deal with North Korea is possible, and that this may include denuclearization, even if it isn’t the US version which requires Kim to give the US all the weapons directly.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is all for that idea, and said on Tuesday that they are fully prepared to act as the monitor for any nuclear deal that might get reached.

IAEA Director Amano Yukiya tod the UN Security Council that the agency could have inspectors back in North Korea within a matter of weeks if a deal came into effect that would allow them to go there.

Amano said he believes the IAEA is the only body equipped to carry out the job at all. This may not sit well with the Trump Administration, as the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed Iran is in compliance with that nuclear deal, despite the US withdrawing from the pact and falsely accusing Iran of non-compliance.

Webmaster's Commentary:

North Korea might be open to denuclearizing, but probably NOT with an agreement with the United States; Kim Jung Un understands perfectly that when treaties are made by a high ranking operative of the US, let's say, by President Obama, they can be just as easily be tossed out the window by an incoming President with a different take on that treaty, as President Trump has done with Iran.

And Amanos last statement, is perfectly on the mark, in light of the fact that the IAEA has done its inspections, and found Iran perfectly within compliance of the P5+1 agreement.

Two weeks of heavy rain has led to mass flooding in Iran, and humanitarian aid from abroad has been severely limited. According to Iranian FM Javad Zarif, and some other officials, that aid is being slowed by US sanctions.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claims that is just the Iran regime “blaming outside entities” when he believes that Iran is fully to blame “for this disaster.” In theory, US sanctions aren’t supposed to limit humanitarian aid.

In practice, however, US sanctions have routinely limited humanitarian aid, and even if Pompeo dismisses Zarif as a liar, he’s also going to have to explain how many other nations, including France and Britain, were openly offering assistance before concerns about the sanctions were risen, and then all such offers started to dry up.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This isn't the first time Pompeo has lied to the American public, and the world.

In fact, one has to suspect that lying well, to attempt to protect the military industrial complex's economy; the US national dignity, and US covert ops of the Unhinged, Surveilled, State of Amerika, is high on the list of attributes for the politically prized Secretary of State position in this country.

And please remember this: Pompeo Lied to Congress About Yemen To Protect Arms Sales This article goes on to state the following:

"Originally appeared on The American Conservative.

Mike Pompeo’s certification earlier this month that the Saudi coalition was working to reduce harm to civilians in Yemen was an obvious sham. According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, Pompeo made the decision to lie for the Saudis and Emiratis because he feared it would hurt arms sales:

Mr. Pompeo overruled concerns from most of the State Department specialists involved in the debate who were worried about the rising civilian death toll in Yemen. Those who objected included specialists in the region and in military affairs. He sided with his legislative affairs team after they argued that suspending support could undercut plans to sell more than 120,000 precision-guided missiles to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to a classified State Department memo and people familiar with the debate.

Cutting off refueling to the coalition likely would make it extremely difficult to sell more weapons to the Saudis and Emiratis, but that is not a good reason to ignore evidence and expert advice and then lie to Congress. Opponents of the war have been trying to block arms sales to both countries for years, and this just gives them one more reason to keep trying. The U.S. should not be in the business of arming governments that we know will use them to commit war crimes, and that certainly applies to the Saudis and the UAE as long as the war on Yemen continues. The longer that the war drags on, and the more civilians that the coalition kills using U.S.-made weapons, the more politically toxic arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE will become."

Sorry, Mikey; dismissing Zarif as "a liar", does't cut it; not when you have been caught in plain sight, lying about the Saudi intentions for the missiles sold by American companies to Saudi Arabia, to use in the commission of war crimes in Yemen, in which the US military has aided and abetted.

Iran Blasts US for Blocking Humanitarian Aids to Flood-Hit People

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi blasted the US government for its restrictive measures that are troubling the relief efforts in aid of flood-stricken people across Iran.

"The US has banned the financial accounts of Iran Red Crescent and such measures have troubled the relief efforts targeting the victims of the recent floods across the country," Qassemi said.

He reiterated that since all the accounts of the Iranian Red Crescent Society have been frozen [by the US], no one can send financial aid from overseas.

Iranian women's rights activist says NZ hijab display after Christchurch shooting is 'heartbreaking'

A women's rights activist in Iran says her heart broke when she saw New Zealanders wearing the hijab in an attempt at solidarity following the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Masih Alinejad, an Iranian activist and journalist who hosts the website My Stealthy Freedom where women in Iran post photos without headscarves, admired Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's compassion, but was conflicted about the national display.

U.S. Eyes New Front to Combat Iran in Golan Heights

The Trump administration’s recent recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the contested Golan Heights territory is part of a larger effort by the White House to open new fronts in efforts to combat Iranian militants and terror proxies in the region, according to U.S. officials familiar with the decision.

President Donald Trump won plaudits from the pro-Israel community and allies on Capitol Hill when he announced that America would officially recognize the Golan territory on Israel’s northern border as belonging to the Jewish state, which annexed the area following war with Syria several decades ago.

U.S. officials last week faced down critics of this decision at the United Nations, a forum unfriendly to the Jewish state, telling member countries that the Trump administration will take every step necessary to protect Israel’s right to self defense against Iranian militants and Hezbollah fighters who have used the Golan area to launch terrorist attacks on Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Now, it makes sense that President Trump may well think that the Golan Area is the perfect "base" from which he can attack Iranian and Syrian forces, and that was why he tried to lend some "credibility and legitimacy" to Israel's having annexed this area.

Prepare to see major deployments of US military into this area, and most probably, very soon.

Video: US Says Syrian Army Must Withdraw from Golan Heights’ Contact Line

On March 28, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came with a new statement claiming that his country will continue working against Iranian presence in Syria. The statement shows that the Israeli military is set to continue its military campaign in Syria.

In own turn, the US did not limit its recent actions in support of Tel Aviv to recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory. It also demanded the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) to withdraw from the separation line area established in the framework of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. US-Israeli efforts to force the SAA to do so could easily turn the Golan Heights into a new hot point and fuel the Syrian conflict further.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, this may be precisely what the US and Israel are hoping, and planning for; The Israeli elections are only 7 days away, on 9 April, so having a military "win" if Syrian forces either attack, or refuse to pull back, would distract the Israeli voting public from Netanyahu's corruption trial.

The big question is, if this happens, what will Russia do?!?!?

Iran floods: New alerts issued as heavy rains continue

Iranian authorities have issued new emergency alerts and travel advisories as heavy rain and snowfall continue to cause flooding and disruptions in most parts of the country.

Morteza Salimi, the head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), said Monday morning that floods have affected at least 23 of the country’s 31 provinces since heavy downpours began on March 19.

Estimates by government agencies suggest that the floods have taken the lives of at least 42 people and destroyed over 25,000 homes around the country.

Major floods have been reported in the provinces of Golestan, Mazandaran, Gilan, Kordestan, Fars, Northern Khorasan, Kermanshah, Khouzestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad as well as Sistan and Baluchestan.

It was reported on Monday morning that fresh floods are expected in at least nine provinces.

US Recognition of Golan Heights Annexation Is Trump's Gift to Netanyahu before Election

Professor Paul Pillar, a former CIA intelligence analyst for 28 years, says US President Donald Trump has made a series of gifts to Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FNA, Paul Pillar said moving "the US embassy to Jerusalem and several measures aimed at making the Palestinians poorer and weaker” have been all gifts presented by the US president to Netanyahu.

He also said the recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli is just the latest in this series of gifts.

Iran's Right Watch: Trump's Decision on Golan Violation of UN Charter

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran’s High Council of Human Rights in a statement deplored US President Donald Trump's unilateral recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights in Syria as “blatant violation of the UN Charter".
"Last week, the international community once again witnessed a blatant violation of international regulations and principles on the one hand and increasing hatred and insecurity in West Asia on the other hand by the two-man team of Trump and Netanyahu,” the human rights statement said.

US Hits Iranians With New Sanctions for Evading Existing Sanctions

When the Trump Administration withdrew from the P5+1 nuclear deal last year, they moved to reimpose all sanctions eased by the deal. It was broadly assumed among US officials that everyone would go along with that, and while they haven’t, there is particular non-compliance among Iranians, who never intended to go along with unilateral US sanctions to begin with.

On Tuesday, the Treasury Department announced new sanctions against what they described as a “vast network” of Iranians defying existing sanctions, but which would more accurately be called about 25 people and a handful of foreign subsidiaries of Iran’s Ansar Bank.

US sanctions broadly intend to deny Iran any access to international banking, but with subsidiaries in Turkey and the UAE, Ansar Bank was able to move money around in defiance of US intentions, albeit not in violation of any actual laws in the jurisdictions where the transactions took place.

An Iranian April Surprise? How far will the White House go to re-elect Netanyahu?

That Washington has been slowly tightening the screws on Iran is undeniable, starting with the withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement last year, which has led to a level of economic warfare initiated by Washington that is unprecedented between two countries that are not actually at war. Ironically and inevitably, though the suffering of the Iranian people is real, the elites who run the country are largely immune to the hardships being experienced.

As there has been no sign that the Iranian people will overthrow their government, which is the White House’s stated objective, more pressure is being contemplated. New sanctions were initiated last Friday and a move that mighty actually bring about an armed confrontation is being considered by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is clearly favoring declaring the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) to be a foreign terrorist group.

US, Israel Will Force Crisis With Iran to Keep Netanyahu in Power

The situation that is developing around both this year’s Israeli election and next year’s ballot in the United States smacks of something like a developing conspiracy to renew the mandates of both Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump somewhat reminiscent of the October Surprise that helped bring Ronald Reagan to the White House.

Back then, the Reagan campaign team led by William Casey secretly negotiated with Iranian representatives to prolong the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis past the 1980 election, enabling Reagan to use the continuing stand-off as a wedge issue to attack the “weakness” of Carter foreign policy. If Carter had been able to bring the hostages home, he might have won reelection. In exchange for a Reagan offer of considerable military hardware, the Iranians agreed to release the U.S. hostages after the new president took office, which they did. And Reagan provided the hardware in an exchange that eventually morphed into Iran-Contra.

Syria requests UN Security Council meeting on Golan

Syria says the US decision to recognise the Golan Heights as Israeli territory contravenes international law.

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Monday in which the United States recognised Israel's annexation of the strategic plateau, despite UN resolutions recognising the Golan as Israeli-occupied territory.

The council is scheduled to discuss the latest crisis on Wednesday during a meeting on renewing the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force deployed between Israel and Syria in the Golan, known as UNDOF.
