Russia has NUKES in Venezuela? Fox News seemingly misrepresents guest’s claim

If there was a clickbait headline competition, Fox News has just produced one that could easily win it. The network said one of its guests believes Russia has nuclear missiles in Venezuela, and presumably no one but him noticed.

To be clear, there are no Russian nukes in Venezuela, as far as any open evidence or official statements go. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, whose appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Tuesday sparked the flashy headline, doesn’t appear to believe there are any either. But that doesn’t stop a really determined traffic-hungry editor from insinuating the opposite.

Nikki Haley Unloads on Ilhan Omar For Claiming America is ‘Bullying’ Venezuelan Dictator

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley slammed Rep. Ilhan Omar after the Minnesota Democrat blamed the current humanitarian crisis in Venezuela on America.

Omar claimed “policies that we [America] have put in place” are to blame for the crisis, adding that “bullying” Nicolas Maduro, the brutal Venezuelan dictator, “does not help.”

“A lot of the policies that we have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela,” Omar alleged. “And we’ve sort of set the stage for where we’re arriving today.”

“This particular bullying and the use of sanctions to eventually intervene and make regime change really does not help the people of countries like Venezuela, and it certainly does not help and is not in the interest of the United States,” she added.

Trump Warns Russia to ‘Get Out’ of Venezuela

President Trump suggested on Wednesday that his administration had warned the Russian government to stay out of Venezuela after two Russian planes carrying military personnel arrived in Caracas this week, a move that places another significant obstacle in the White House’s slow-moving effort to oust President Nicolás Maduro.

During an Oval Office meeting with Fabiana Rosales, the wife of Juan Guaidó, the Venezuelan National Assembly politician recognized by the Trump administration and 50 other countries as the rightful interim president, Mr. Trump said that Russia needed to see its way out of the conflict.

“Russia has to get out. What’s your next question?” Mr. Trump told reporters.

Having Admitted to “Lying” and “Cheating” while CIA Director, Pompeo Drops Another Whopper after Failed Venezuelan Coup

WASHINGTON — Just a week after the former CIA director and now secretary of state admitted that the agency prior to and under his direction “lied,” “cheated” and “stole,” Mike Pompeo has delivered another claim that, despite his recent admission of dishonesty, has been regurgitated with little scrutiny by a variety of media outlets.

In what Venezuelan government officials claimed was an attempt to provide cover for the failure of Tuesday’s U.S.-backed coup attempt to gain any traction, Pompeo claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been ready to flee to Havana, Cuba amid the early morning chaos of Tuesday’s failed military uprising, but had been convinced to stay by the Russian government. Pompeo made the claim during a Tuesday interview with CNN, stating:

He [Maduro] had an airplane on the tarmac. He was ready to leave this morning, as we understand it, and the Russians indicated he should stay.”

Biden Sides With Trump, Bolton, and Pompeo in Backing Venezuela Coup Effort

Despite progressive critics and anti-war voices speaking forcefully against the Trump administration’s overt backing of the attempted coup d’état by rightwing opposition forces in Venezuela on Tuesday, 2020 Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden aligned himself with the White House by throwing his support behind the overthrow effort.

“The violence in Venezuela today against peaceful protesters is criminal,” Biden tweeted on Tuesday. “Maduro’s regime is responsible for incredible suffering. The U.S. must stand with the National Assembly & Guaidó in their efforts to restore democracy through legitimate, internationally monitored elections.”

Venezuela: Guaidó’s Botched Coup – What Does it Mean and What's Next?

Just before dawn on 30 April, the Venezuelan opposition launched yet another attempt at a military coup. By the end of the day, the botched coup attempt seemed to have failed, with one of its leaders seeking refuge in the Spanish embassy, 25 of the soldiers involved requesting asylum at the Brazilian embassy and Juan Guaidó in hiding or on the run.

The coup started at 5.46 am with a video message by Guaidó, who proclaimed himself president in charge on 24 January at a street rally, but who has not moved an inch closer to Miraflores Palace since. In the video, he appeared outside La Carlota military airbase in the east of Caracas, together with a small group of army soldiers. Also present was Leopoldo López, the opposition leader under house arrest for his role in the deadly guarimba riots of 2014. Apparently, he had been released by the SEBIN intelligence officers in charge of guarding him.

Bolton Pushes Military Option for Venezuela as Trump, Pentagon Hesitate

The crisis in Venezuela escalated this week after opposition leader Juan Guaido announced the start of the "final phase" of the operation to overthrow the Maduro government and called on the country's military to join the opposition.

US officials have conflicting opinions on how to handle the Venezuelan crisis, with at least one heated exchange taking place last week between members of National Security Advisor John Bolton's staff and the Pentagon on the supposed lack of military options.

Speaking to the Washington Post, unnamed officials recalled a clash between Bolton's staff and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul J. Selva, with members of the Bolton camp repeatedly interrupting Selva during a briefing in which the general, speaking for the military, advised against escalating the situation in the Latin American country.

Bolton Claims 25,000 Cuban Troops Are in Venezuela

National Security Adviser John Bolton continued to push accusations that Cuba is behind the failed US-backed coup in Venezuela, now claiming that 25,000 Cuban troops are in the country, and Venezuela would fall by midnight if they left.

Cuba has denied having troops in Venezuela, or engaging in any military operations there. Bolton provided no evidence that the 25,000 troops are there, and there are some serious reasons to doubt it.

Change of tack? EU quieter on latest failed Venezuela coup attempt as Guaido’s influence wanes

When the US announced support for Venezuela’s self-declared ‘interim president’ Juan Guaido in January, European leaders heartily backed the move — but three months later, after a second failed coup attempt, they are suddenly shy.

With US backing, Guaido attempted to launch a second uprising on Tuesday, urging his supporters to take to the streets and calling on the military to seize power from President Nicolas Maduro. While both pro and anti-government demonstrators held rallies in Caracas, the military did not defect in great numbers and the coup attempt fizzled out.

Russian and US Positions on Venezuelan Crisis are Incompatible - Lavrov

On Wednesday, the Russian foreign minister spoke to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, telling the top US diplomat that Washington's interference in Venezuela's affairs was a destructive approach fraught with "the most serious consequences."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged the United States to refrain from returning to the imperious 'Monroe Doctrine' in its relations with Venezuela, and indicated that while the Russian and US positions on the crisis in the Latin American country remain incompatible, dialogue must continue.

"We agreed to maintain contacts, including on Venezuela, but I don't see a way to reconcile our positions — ours, on the one hand, which is based on the UN Charter and the principles and norms of international law, and that of the United States, on the other, in which Washington assigns the acting president of another country," Lavrov said, speaking to reporters in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Thursday.

On Thursday, The Washington Post newspaper reported, citing unnamed White House sources, that US President Donald Trump is unlikely to launch any long-term military intervention in Venezuela, while US National Security Adviser John Bolton was allegedly urging him to do so.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday called for an end to the conflict in Venezuela, calling it a "brutal repression" of the country's nationals.

"The brutal repression of the Venezuelan people must end, and it must end soon," Trump said during a national day of prayer service at the White House.

Cuba denies military support for Venezuelan leader but says broader cooperation would be 'totally legitimate' while US invokes the Monroe Doctrine

President Donald Trump's national security adviser said Wednesday that the U.S. deems the uprising in Venezuela to be a Western affair and outside actors, including Cuban forces, must leave the South American country immediately.

Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba's director-general of US affairs, said in Washington that the US is falsely accusing his country of having more than 20,000 troops and intelligence agents in Venezuela.

De Cossío said there are roughly 20,000 Cubans in Venezuela but virtually all are medical workers.

'There are no troops,' he said in English. 'Cuba does not participate in military operations nor in security operations in Venezuela.'

Meanwhile, John Bolton told White House reporters on Wednesday morning that Trump is returning to the Monroe Doctrine and will be exerting its influence to stabilize Venezuela.

'We've made it very clear that the Monroe Doctrine is alive in this administration. We expect foreign influences to depart,' Bolton said.

The Making of Juan Guaidó: US Regime-Change Laboratory Created Venezuela’s Coup Leader

Before the fateful date of Jan. 22, fewer than 1-in-5 Venezuelans had heard of Juan Guaidó. Only a few months ago, the 35-year-old was an obscure character in a politically marginal far-right group closely associated with gruesome acts of street violence. Even in his own party, Guaidó had been a mid-level figure in the opposition-dominated National Assembly, which is now held under contempt according to Venezuela’s constitution.

But after a single phone call from from U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Guaidó proclaimed himself as president of Venezuela. Anointed as the leader of his country by Washington, a previously unknown political bottom dweller was vaulted onto the international stage as the U.S.-selected leader of the nation with the world’s largest oil reserves.

U.S. HYBRID WAR ON VENEZUELA ENTERED HOT PHASE

The US hybrid war on Venezuela has now entered a hot phase.

Guaido, accompanied by heavily armed men, claimed that he had backing from the military and that the video was filmed at the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base in the capital, Caracas.

Opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez, who had been held under house arrest after “inciting violence” during the anti-government riots, appeared alongside Guaido. He claimed that he had been “released by the military”.

The US immediately declared its public support for the coup attempt at the highest level and once again threatened the country’s legitimate government with military action. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the actions of Guaido and his armed supporters a “quest for freedom and democracy”.

"It was indicated that the continuation of aggressive steps is fraught with the most serious consequences. Diaz-Balart told Fox News if Maduro stays in power it could be "an open door for the Russians and for the Chinese and for others to increase their activity against our national security interest."

“The closest we ever came to nuclear war was because the Russians put missiles, right, nuclear missiles in Cuba,” replied Diaz-Balart.

Ron Paul Warns: "Hapless" Guaido Now "Worth More Dead Than Alive" To Washington's Venezuelan Coup-Creators

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido failed to kick-start a military uprising on Tuesday. After this fizzle, RT reports that his life may be in danger from his own CIA backers, the director of the Ron Paul Institute argued in a debate.

Daniel McAdams and Ron Paul, the former libertarian representative from Texas, discussed the repeated attempts by Guaido to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with the backing from the US government. Despite all the efforts, Maduro remains in power, supported by many Venezuelans and in control of its military and police forces.

Paul said he was concerned that the Latin American country may be plunged into large-scale violence by some provocation.

“The big danger is a hard war breaking out. I’d still bet it won’t be too bad, with thousands of troops moving. But it could be a guerrilla war or something like that. If there is a false flag or some important official on either side gets killed, you can’t tell what might happen,” he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yes... but desperation on the cusp of madness.

With Russian troops having been on Venezuelan soil for some time, now, what is the plan?!? War with Russia over Venezuela (over control of its vast oil reserves?!?)

Faux is showing, live, the hearings on the Barr report this morning, with nary a word about Venezuela. It's about the bottom of the hour here, so I will be curious if it actually gets any air time at all this morning. OK, I watched this from the bottom half of the hour; and still no word on Venezuela. They are going right back, top of the hour, to The Barr Hearings.

The only comment from Regime Changer in Chief, Elliott Abrams yesterday, was as follows:

U.S. envoy says top Venezuelan officials negotiated to help restore order Elliott Abrams went on to state that:

"U.S. envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams said on Tuesday opposition-led protests in Caracas were part of a broader effort negotiated with three senior officials in President Nicolas Maduro’s government to restore constitutional order.

Abrams, speaking to reporters at the State Department, said the talks involved Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, Supreme Court chief justice Maikel Moreno and presidential guard commander Ivan Rafael Hernandez Dela about restoring democracy in the country.

“There have been some interesting negotiations among Venezuelans inside the regime and outside the regime about returning to the constitution,” Abrams said. “They negotiated for a long time the means of restoring democracy but it seems that today they are not going forward,” he added."

So I have to wonder, since names were named in this article, whether those three actually did communicate with Abrams... or did not.

And notice how Abrams is shifting gears wildly, by throwing the lack of success of the coup, on these Venezuelans, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, Supreme Court chief justice Maikel Moreno and presidential guard commander Ivan Rafael Hernandez Dela rather than upon himself, and the Those in the Bowels of Power in DC who concocted this poison stew of lies?!?

Guaido is now what those with a little bit of intelligence business savvy, understand to be a "live liability" for the CIA/FBI/and whatever other intel ops who convinced President Trump that this could actually work.

And as for Abrams, he has just handed President Trump his very own "Bay of Pigs" debacle here, in attempting to foment "regime change" with a population which would not have it, and have chosen to stay loyal to Maduro.

And as for Abram's future in regime change, I think that, unless he had intense "defense in depth" planning, and was placing those into effect, if this went "mammary glands vertical" a plan B, C, D, E, and F, he is going to be handed his hat by Trump, who is going to look for someone who can actually do what Abrams told him he could do.

Who knows, maybe Erik Prince's timing was perfect for getting back in good graces with the White House when he pitched sending his own mercs into Venezuela, to destabilize it to the point of regime change?!?

And I have to suspect, by his rantings and ravings, both in public and on Twitter, that President Trump had his book "The Art of the Deal" completely ghostwritten, as I see zero signs of true negotiations, in either his personality, or his decision making, which, at the moment, can be described as both utter chaos, and no closer to achieving a stable, peaceful world than when he came into office.

To say this is a profound disappointment for many of us, who at the beginning of his campaign, really believed that he just might be able to pull this off, is akin to saying "the SS Titanic took on a little ice,and ultimately became the "US Trumptanic"

And the real question Americans need to ask, is why, at the end of the day, are our Presidential candidates so lousy?!? The answer is, because by the time they are "thrown at the Public", in many large, theatrical Kabuki-style events, they have had to be vetted by the Deep State; the Military Industrial Complex; and the corporations who contribute to both parties luxuriously to make sure that nothing changes in the ways they do business.

And here's companion piece, courtesy of Zero Hedge, and we ALL could see this coming: Maduro declares victory over attempted coup,, followed by the following: "Update (7:16 am ET): Here we go again...

Now that the monthslong simmering rebellion against Maduro has exploded into a full-fledged uprising - one that's in danger of being brutally suppressed by the Maduro regime - it's time for the US to revive its threats of military intervention with the added subtext of 'this time, we mean it'.

After footage from yesterday's riots showed regime tanks brutally crushing opposition supporters, Mike Pompeo appeared on Fox Business this morning and said that the US hasn't ruled out military intervention.

U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE POMPEO SAYS MILITARY ACTION IN VENEZUELA IS POSSIBLE 'IF THAT'S WHAT'S REQUIRED', WOULD PREFER PEACEFUL TRANSITION -FOX BUSINESS INTERVIEW
His comments come as supporters of the regime and opposition prepare to take to the streets for another wave of massive demonstrations on Wednesday."

IF Pompeo doesn't understand that this "regime change" movement lost its window yesterday, he doesn't deserve to be Secretary of State, period, end of discussion.

Coup fizzles? Guaido’s mentor takes refuge in Chilean embassy as 25 military seek asylum in Brazil’s

Venezuelan opposition figure Leopoldo Lopez has sought refuge in Chile’s embassy in Caracas, while at least 25 pro-Juan Guaido troops asked Brazil for refuge. The news all but points to the failure of the US-backed coup attempt.

Lopez had been under house arrest since 2017, but was seen at the side of Guaido – who had declared himself “interim president” of Venezuela in January – on Tuesday morning, as supporters of the US-backed opposition sought to take control of Caracas by force. At least 50 people were injured and 11 arrested during the unrest on Tuesday.

Police Arrive at Venezuelan Embassy in Washington With Handcuffs, Block Entrance

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US law enforcement officials blocked off the entrance of the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington on Tuesday amid ongoing protests over the handling of the crisis in the Latin American country, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the embassy.

About 30 policemen with handcuffs arrived at the Venezuelan Embassy, which has been occupied by activists for more than two weeks, blocking the entrance from 30th Street.

The goal of the protesters is to prevent US-backed opposition figure Juan Guaido and his so-called government from taking possession of the building.

he situation in front of the embassy has been exacerbated amid tensions in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, where Juan Guaido released a video on Tuesday morning with a call on the country's military to join in the final stage of his so-called "Operation Freedom" from the La Carlota military base with the goal of ending the “usurpation of power” by President Maduro.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said earlier in the day that the United States had signed off on an attempted coup in Venezuela by calling on the country's armed forces to support the opposition parliament.

Venezuela Coup? "Live Fire" Exchanged Outside Contested Air Base, Armored Car Plows Into Protesters

update 5: As predicted, what Guaido dubbed “Operation Liberty” — a full on coup attempt for which he appealed for Venezuela's military to rise up against Maduro — appears to have failed to achieve significant momentum, given Caracas officials are taking to the air waves to declare the "mediocre" coup attempt successfully put down.

“A mediocre coup d'etat attempt has failed,” said defense minister Vladimir Padrino on a state radio broadcast Tuesday afternoon, following prior statements saying he was ready put down the rebellion by force. And in a television appearance Padrino further called the day's events "ridiculous".

Meanwhile national security advisor John Bolton has stated this is "not a coup" given that the US already sees opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's president. Bolton said of the rapidly unfolding and increasingly violent events that "it is not a coup for Juan Guaido to try and take command of the Venezuelan military."

Webmaster's Commentary:

No, Mr. President: this country does NOT stand for the Freedom of the Venezuelan people; it stands for controlling their massive oil reserves, and insuring that Venezuela's oil will only be sold for US dollars.

I have heard the soundbite "Everything is on the table", floated as a description of further potential ways for the US to get Maduro out of power, whatever they may be.

War against Venezuela for its oil?!?

Right now, I would not bet against it.

But were I in the Pentagon "war room", I would have to ask; "If we invade, what will Russia, which already has troops in position, decide to do?"

This could get ugly, quickly, and in ways for which the US government perhaps has not either thought through, or didn't consider: and that, folks, is what concerns me most.

Ex-Peru President Kills Himself as Police Try to Arrest Him

Former Peruvian President Alan García shot himself in the head and died Wednesday moments after police arrived at his home to arrest him on corruption allegations in Latin America’s largest graft probe.

Please remember, as all of the presstitutes have been given their orders to present this to the public as a "completely indigenous protest", when it has all the earmarks of a US-led psych-ops.

Juan Guaido, Designated US puppet in Venezuela
The Making of Juan Guaido: how the US "Regime change" Laboratory created Venezuela coup leader

The article goes on to state: "Before the fateful day of January 22, fewer than one in five Venezuelans had heard of Juan Guaidó.

But after a single phone call from US Vice President Mike Pence, Guaidó proclaimed himself as president of Venezuela. Anointed as the leader of his country by Washington, a previously unknown political bottom dweller was vaulted onto the international stage as the US-selected leader of the nation with the world’s largest oil reserves."

Echoing the Washington consensus, the New York Times editorial board hailed Guaidó as a “credible rival” to Maduro with a “refreshing style and vision of taking the country forward.” The Bloomberg News editorial board applauded him for seeking “restoration of democracy” and the Wall Street Journal declared him “a new democratic leader.” Meanwhile, Canada, numerous European nations, Israel, and the bloc of right-wing Latin American governments known as the Lima Group recognized Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela"

So, that is what we have here in Guaido; a guy schooled in "regime change", just so those in the bowels of DC ultimately control Venezuela's oil, and the method of payment for that oil, if in fact, this "Cu Cu KaCHOO" is successful.

But please remember the following; Russia has troops on the ground in Venezuela; the US came with too little too late, to prevent them from being there, at Maduro's invitation. So one has to wonder, just what their orders are?!? To keep Maduro and his family safe at all costs, and at all times??!?

One of DC's "supremely self-reinventing lower-octave bottom feeders", John Bolton, has made his statement today, that the Venezuelan people, and its military, "had" to back Guaido, and by doing that, will preserve the Venezuelan Constitution; Bollix and Codswallop, I say!!

This is about the money, and about the oil, in one of the world's most sublimely gifted countries when it comes to reserves. As Google states, "The proven oil reserves in Venezuela are recognized as the largest in the world, totaling 297 billion barrels (4.72×1010 m3) as of 1 January 2014."

Remember how Victoria Nuland bragged about how much money the US spent to get "regime change" in Ukraine?!? United States spent 5 billion dollars to achieve "Regime Change" in Ukraine which, ultimately, proved a stupid thing for it to have done, given the performance of their "anointed Savoir", Poroshenko, in the last election, where he got professionally "creamed" by a Comedian, who just won the Ukrainian election by a huge majority.Volodymyr Zelenskiy wins Ukrainian election by a landslide

How much do you think the US government is willing to spend on "regime change" in Venezuela, to get its hands around that oil?!? Many, many more billions, friends; while our Vets sleep rough in our streets, and US infrastructure is crumbling around us?

Remember; American political system is solely driven by its members' lust for money, to be made off the backs of American working people, or conquering other countries; the situation unfolding in Venezuela proves the truth of that last statement.

Blackwater Founder Calls For 5,000 Mercenaries to Topple Maduro

As if the past months of US push for regime change in Venezuela with officials like Elliott Abrams of Iran-Contra conviction infamy at the helm wasn’t bizarre enough, things just got weirder, as Erik Prince has apparently been pitching a plan around Washington to privatize US coup efforts using his latest Blackwater inspired mercenary empire.

According to Reuters, Prince — the brother of billionaire Education Secretary Betsy DeVos who has over the past years since selling his mired-in-controversy Blackwater group (now Academi) revived his mercenary empire in China in the form of Frontier Services Group (FSG) — intends to “deploy a private army to help topple Venezuela’s socialist president, Nicholas Maduro.”

Showdown Looms as US Tells Activists to Leave Venezuelan Embassy

The United States said Thursday that leftist activists defiantly occupying the Venezuelan embassy in Washington should leave and make way for representatives of U.S.-recognized leader Juan Guaido.

Elliott Abrams, the envoy heading the U.S. push to topple President Nicolas Maduro, called the sit-in “a violation of the law” and said that Guaido’s ambassador in Washington would discuss with security officials how to remove them.

“This is sovereign Venezuelan territory. They have to leave,” Abrams told reporters, without setting a timeline.

“It is really striking to find anybody in the U.S. defending the Maduro regime. It is shameful to see them,” he said.

Reuters has also acted after Rosneft applied for a criminal investigation of the media company’s operations in Russia by Moscow prosecutors.

Activists Protect Venezuelan Embassy From US-Supported Coup

Authored by Medea Benjamin and Kevin Zeese via CommonDreams.org,

An extraordinary chapter in the ongoing saga of Venezuela has been taking place, virtually unnoticed, at the Venezuela Embassy that lies in the heart of swanky Georgetown in Washington DC.

A group initiated by CODEPINK and Popular Resistance, all activists opposed to the prospect of the Venezuelan opposition taking over the Embassy, have been living inside the building for the past two weeks, working side-by-side with the skeletal Venezuela diplomatic staff that has been told by the State Department that they must leave by April 24.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What really gets me, in the American way of doing politics, is that we are always, come our (alleged) national election day, voting for the lesser of two evils; and it boils down to that, because in order to be "presented" to the American people as a "great opportunity" to move our country forward.

Unfortunately, it is really the Deep State; the military industrial complex; and the large corporations which have already "chosen" the candidates for us, perhaps not in the "smoke filled rooms" of yesterday, but the 21st century's equivalent thereof.

Mike and I have watched the Trump presidency very carefully, to see if there were going to be any real, fundamental answers to the questions and concerns dogging We the People, and with the tiny exception of a little bit of braggadocio, on Trump's part, regarding illegal immigrants (so far, sound and fury, signifying not one heck of a lot), the short answer is, HELL, no!

The tax cuts upon which he waxed most poetic, have really only favored the already well-monied; the wars we hoped that he would shut down, have not been shut-down, but even further aggravated and intensified; and the sanctions and other attacks in Venezuela?!? Simply a shift in strategy to grab Venezuela's oil, when their first line of offence failed utterly, under Guaido, and flopped, miserably.

We are now looking at wars against China; North Korea; Iran; and Russia; and God only knows who else (most probably Africa, which has some of the most unclaimed natural resources in the world.).

And I have to ask my brother and sister Americans; can this be the same Trump who wrote "The Art of the Deal", now threatening the planet with aggressive wars of conquests, rather than trying to calm things down, in a responsible, measured, nuanced kind of way?!?

Day after day, President Trump reveals who he really is by the foreign policy he dictates; so now, we are dealing the terrifying revelation, that this man, unmasked, is a tyrannical cynical bully, who has, from day 1, been totally absorbed by the Neocon Borg, because he mimics precisely how they would deal with geopolitical issues.

War is his only answer to everything, as we are about to find out, unfortunately...And I think what we may be looking at, here at home, in the not too distant future, is the declaration of a National Emergency, ahead of the next US "Military Misadventure"; the suspension of the Constitution and Bill of Rights; and the resurrection of a draft in this country.

I frankly am experiencing very intense "buyers' remorse" on this guy right now, but folks; with the Dimentocrats having decided to ramrod a Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign down the throats of American voters in 2016, please: what choice did we actually have here?!?

Washington Not Happy About New China Focus on Central America

As it becomes clear that the Trump Administration support, so far unsuccessful, for regime change in Venezuela is also very much about targeting the huge financial presence of China with the Maduro regime, recent news of a major Chinese oil success in Cuban waters will clearly deepen the geopolitical tensions. And it involves not only Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil.

China’s major state-owned oil company, CNPC, through its subsidiary, Great Wall Drilling, has begun exploring for oil off Cuba’s coast in a joint venture with state-owned oil firm Cuba Petroleum Company (CUPET), according to an April 16 report in the China state news agency, Xinhua. Great Wall has been engaged in oil exploration in Cuba since 2005, but this is the most promising result to date. Advanced drilling technology from CNPC has opened the prospect of major oil off Cuba for the first time.

The arrival of Russian military planes in Venezuela in March 2019 spurred harsh criticism from the US, who has accused Moscow of destabilising the situation in the Latin American state, currently engulfed in a political crisis. Russia, for its part, has recalled that its planes arrived under a bilateral agreement with Caracas.

The US has called on the international community to deny Russian planes flying to Venezuela a right of passage through their airspace, following the example of such a move by Malta. Ortagus said that such a decision could help stop Russian support for the country's President Nicolas Maduro.

ECUADOR TURNS TO INTERPOL TO ARREST FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER & ASSANGE SUPPORTER PATINO

The former foreign minister of Ecuador will be placed on Interpol’s Red Notice list, after fleeing the country for fear of prosecution, as the government of Lenin Moreno continues to crack down on Julian Assange’s supporters.
“The attorney general’s office began a criminal process against Ricardo Patino for the alleged crime of instigation,” the office said in a statement on Thursday. “[Patino] had given a speech in which he instigated people to take over public institutions and close roads.”

Besides his alleged anti-government activities, Patino is also being sought for his supposed links to Swedish software developer Ola Bini, who was arrested last week on suspicions of ‘hacking’ for WikiLeaks.

Humanitarian Crisis in Venezuela? What Crisis?

Will the Trump regime order military action against Venezuela on the phony pretexts of humanitarian intervention and responsibility to protect (R2P)?

Though highly unlikely, we’ve seen it many times before – “humanitarian” naked aggression, raping and destroying nations for their own good, “liberating” them from fundamental freedoms, looting their resources for “economic development” – the right thing to do?

One nation attacking another threatening no one is the highest of high crimes – a fundamental Nuremberg Tribunal principle affirmed by Chief Justice Robert Jackson, a US Supreme Court Justice.

Calling Nazi war crimes “the supreme international crime against peace,” he stressed the following in his opening remarks, saying:

“The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant, and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored, because it cannot survive their being repeated.”

Preventing the Sale of Venezuelan Oil to Cuba: Killing Two Birds with a Stone

Recent US sanctions have been directed at the heart of Venezuela’s economy: the oil industry, an industry that has also been crippled by the continued sabotages on the electric power grid of the country.

But when you think that enough suffering has been imposed on the people of Venezuela with all sorts of warfare actions taken out from the toolbox of a full scale Hybrid War, the US government strikes again with another hit. This time by preventing the sale of Venezuelan oil to Cuba, which amounts to killing the two proverbial birds with one stone.

That is precisely the intention of the latest US sanctions against Venezuela targeting 34 oil tankers dedicated to transporting crude from Venezuela to Cuba. The measures against the Venezuelan cargo vessels owned by state-run oil company PDVSA are doubly illegal since they are also extraterritorial affecting two other firms: the Liberia-based Ballito Shipping Incorporated and the Greece-based ProPer In Management Incorporated.

Venezuela: Canada Imposes Fresh Sanctions as Pompeo Vows to ‘Tighten Noose’

Ottawa imposed sanctions on 43 Venezuelan officials Wednesday, according to a statement by Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland.

While the statement did not specify the names of those targeted, Freeland indicated that they were “high-ranking officials” or “governors.”

“Canada is committed to supporting the peaceful restoration of constitutional democracy in Venezuela,” she added.

Previous Canadian sanctions had targeted a total of 70 Venezuelan officials.

The measures by the Trudeau government come on the heels of successive rounds of sanctions imposed against Caracas by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). After sanctioning Venezuela’s oil, mining and banking sectors, Washington has recently gone after vessels and cargo companies involved in Venezuelan oil shipments. The latest round targeted four shipping companies and nine vessels on Friday.

Venezuela: A Cocaine Super-Highway to the US?

Venezuela under Chavez and Maduro is in the forefront of combatting illicit drugs. More on this below.

The US is the world’s leading facilitator of the illicit trade – working with drug cartels, notably through the CIA. Major US banks profit hugely from laundering dirty money.

In his book titled “The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade,” Alfred McCoy documented CIA and US government complicity in drugs trafficking at the highest official levels.

It continues today in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South and Central America, facilitating the global supply of illicit drugs.

NYT Lynch Mob Mentality

Lynch mob mentality unacceptably targets individuals like Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange, groups like FARC, Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as nations for regime change like Iran, Venezuela, and numerous victims of US aggression.

US-led Western media support for the above high crimes constitutes private sector lynch mob mentality – Assange in the eye of the storm following his unlawful arrest in London.

VIDEO: HOW THE PENTAGON AND CIA PUSH VENEZUELA REGIME-CHANGE PROPAGANDA IN VIDEO GAMES

THE US MILITARY AND CIA LAUNDER COUP PROPAGANDA THROUGH POPULAR FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER VIDEO GAMES LIKE CALL OF DUTY, SIMULATING ASSASSINATIONS OF VENEZUELA’S SOCIALIST LEADER AND SABOTAGE OF ITS ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE.
BY MAX BLUMENTHAL AND BEN NORTON

We often think of video games as fiction, but the US government has weaponized them to advance its agenda around the globe.

SIMULATING VENEZUELA INVASION IN “CALL OF DUTY”
Venezuelan citizen journalists Orlenys Ortiz and Sancocho Power have drawn attention to the similarity between the plot of a 2013 first person shooter game, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and alleged acts of US sabotage against the country this March.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is set in a dystopian future after the Middle East is nuked. A Venezuelan general comes into power, establishing a socialist style federation that spreads across Latin America like a disease, uniting all oil producing nations and expelling US citizens.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Somewhere, in this big, wide world of computer games, there need to be a few, which bring the concepts of cooperation, personal responsibility, free thought, and the taking care of others need to rule the day; otherwise, I am deeply concerned that our world will become just as dystopian as is this game.

AMERICA’S WAR AGAINST IRAN & VENEZUELA’S “DEEP STATES” IS GOING PUBLIC

it’s clear that the US desires to dismantle Iran and Venezuela’s supposedly interconnected influence networks in Latin America as the next step in fortifying “Fortress America“, and while “deep state” wars such as this one have been going on for decades, it’s hitherto unprecedented for any country to make such a crusade public since the end of the Old Cold War when the US used to make similar claims about the USSR and its communist proxies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The trajectory that US foreign policy has taken of late, should scare the stuffing out of reasonable people; a category within which I hope,, I still belong.

You have a President who appears, at this point in his Presidency, to be a President In Name only, has now been thoroughly subsumed by the US Deep State, and ever willing to do its bidding.

The Neocon Mouthpiece, the Mouth that Pours, belongs to no other than Mike Pompeo, who appears to let his Dominionist faith rule his foreign policy. If you haven't read the following article, perhaps now is the time to do so.

The Rapture and the Real World: Mike Pompeo Blends Beliefs and PolicyThe article goes on to state:

"Though Mr. Trump is secular, white evangelicals are a big part of his voter base, and some of his major foreign policy moves, planned or supported by Mr. Pompeo, are intended to shore up political support.

The most notable examples involve Israel. When Mr. Trump moved the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, evangelicals applauded.

Studies show that white evangelicals are much more likely than other Americans to believe that Israel fulfills a biblical prophecy. Known as Christian Zionists, they believe God promised the land to the Jews, and that the gathering of Jews in Israel is foretold in the prophecy of the rapture — the ascent of Christians into the kingdom of God."

Of course, Netanyahu just stands there, and smiles, knowing that whatever he wants from the US, he will get, even if it is a massive war against Iran, which will surely translate as a war against Russia, paid for only in American money, and American blood.

Mr. Pompeo talks about the rapture. “We will continue to fight these battles,” he said at a “God and Country Rally” in 2015, because there is a “never-ending struggle” until “the rapture.”

Folks, I am having a palm to forehead moment, at his having said this. This denotes ancient friends (the original Hebrews, not the Khazars who currently run Israel) and ancient enemies, with whom this flavor of Christianity wants to engage, militarily, like present day Iran, for no logical reason other than an horrific mis-read of what Christian "destiny" looks like.

What would be a "logical, sane " foreign policy, would be one of engaging, not enraging, potential geopolitical assets, like China and Russia; being a part of the belt and road economy; and learning to live within one's means as a nation.

But Dominionists (and I am certain Pompeo is one of these people), believe that by bringing the world into a living hell of a total world war, they will will pave the way for Jesus to come down, and transition all living faithful up to heaven, in what is described by them as, "THE RAPTURE".

And folks, if what I am about to post, doesn't give you the heebe-jeebies, I do not know what will. And the article is datelined last December

"Anyone wondering what the true impetus was behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision on Wednesday to unilaterally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital needed only to view the image of the president when he made the formal announcement" from Harretz:

The U.S. evangelical community is in raptures over Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel, believing it moves the world closer to Armageddon

The article continues to state: "Glittering Christmas decorations festooned across the White House hallway enveloped Trump, with Vice President Mike Pence deliberately – if a bit awkwardly – placed directly behind the president’s shoulder, ensuring that no camera angle could leave him out of the picture."

So folks, what we have here is a very religiously deranged person, setting US foreign policy, with unending visions of wars and more wars with which to "open the gates of both Heaven (and Hell) to attempt to achieve what Secretary of State Pompeo believes is the Bible's "last stand in Armageddon". He is, of course, aided and abetted in these manners by John Bolton, Security Council to the President.

So I submit to you; can a person whose religious fantasies rule his both life, and his illogically insane foreign policies, be a proper person to set US foreign policy, when ALL he wants, due to his eshatology, is to create a world where wars are certain, but responsible, fence-mending with potential allies is considered idiocy and lunacy?!?

Because folks, this completely off the course/on the skids path upon which we are moving, due to Pompeo's beliefs, will most likely see us at war with Russia; China; and God only knows what part of the rest of the world.

Right now, it is too damned bad that the US doesn't have a 25th Amendment equivalent to that for the President, for the Secretary of State; and it is high time that Trump see the reasons behind the wars Pompeo is trying to ignite, but are not necessary for the US or the World; they are, unfortunately, necessary for Pompeo's distorted view of the world, and its most dystopian future possible, to come to pass.

Russia replaces Venezuelan crude on European markets

European refiners are switching to Russian sour grades as US sanctions have shrunk Venezuela’s similar-grade exports, Reuters reports, adding that the Russian sour crude is getting increasingly expensive.

Citing sources from the trading industry, Reuters says the situation has been made worse by the fact that OPEC members have cut mainly their output of heavier, more sour grades under the OPEC+ agreement aimed at stimulating a price rise.

US crude is not an alternative as it is overwhelmingly light and sweet, while refineries in Europe are equipped to process heavier grades as well as light ones to make refined products.

From 2004 to 2011, under Chávez’s tutelage, Carvajal headed the Directorate General of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM). But in 2008, the US named Carvajal as a major facilitator of international drugs trafficking and imposed financial sanctions on his assets around the world. US agrees not to seek death penalty for Assange

The United States has agreed not to seek the death penalty against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in covert negotiations with the UK and Ecuador to get him evicted from the South American country’s embassy in London, US media reported.

The process of moving Assange out of the Ecuadorian Embassy started a year ago, in March 2018, when the Ecuadorians made their first request to Britain, ABC News reported Monday.

Ecuador made its request in a letter on March 7 of last year, asking for written assurances that the UK would not extradite Assange to a country where he could face the death penalty, the report said, citing US and Ecuadorian officials.

Ecuador's direct outreach to the US came six months later, through the country’s ambassador to Germany, Manuel Mejia Dalmau, according to the report.

Ferriero said that reviewers worked for a total of 32,000 hours to complete the task, which began during the Obama administration and was completed under the Trump administration, and were able to release the documents 97% unredacted.

Canada Sanctions 43 Venezuelan Officials, People Close to Maduro - Ottawa

Earlier, Canada became one of the first countries to join the United States in recognising self-proclaimed 'interim president' Juan Guaido as Venezuela's legitimate leader, with Caracas and its allies slamming Guaido's actions as an attempted foreign-backed coup d'etat.

Canada has imposed additional sanctions against "the Maduro regime", targeting over three dozen officials and others close to the Venezuelan president, Global Affairs Canada has announced.

US MILITARY ATTACK ON VENEZUELA MULLED BY TOP TRUMP ADVISORS AND LATIN AMERICAN OFFICIALS AT PRIVATE DC MEETING

EXCLUSIVE: AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC EYE, THE CENTER FOR STRATEGIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (CSIS) THINK TANK HOSTED A TOP-LEVEL, OFF-THE-RECORD MEETING TO EXPLORE US MILITARY OPTIONS AGAINST VENEZUELA.
BY MAX BLUMENTHAL

The Washington, DC-based think tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) hosted a private roundtable on April 10 called “Assessing the Use of Military Force in Venezuela.” A list of attendees was provided to The Grayzone and two participants confirmed the meeting took place. They refused to offer any further detail, however.

A WHO’S WHO OF TRUMP ADMINISTRATION COUP ADVISERS

The CSIS check-in list not only confirms that the Trump administration and its outside advisors are mulling options for a military assault on Venezuela; it also outlines the cast of characters involved in crafting the regime change operation against the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

President Trump, please: a word.

Have you and your colleagues in this ill-considered potential assault on Venezuela, collectively imbibed the "Koolaid" to the point where you believe that a military assault on Venezuela is both a "reasonable and moral thing" for the US government and military to do?!?

Forgive me, sir, but the candidate Trump spoke of ending these horrific wars, largely to be in control of of the world's petroleum resources; and now, as President Trump, it appears to those of us who actually believed this just might happen, understand, very clearly, that it will not happen, now that you have well and truly been "absorbed" by the Neocon Borg.

Not only are these immoral, illegal wars going to continue, under your watch, but new wars are going to be started in the name American dollar hegemony, and in terms of this Venezuela is an absolute prize. As stated at Google:

"The proven oil reserves in Venezuela are recognized as the largest in the world, totaling 297 billion barrels (4.72×1010 m3) as of 1 January 2014. ... The energy and oil ministry said it had certified an additional 12.4 billion barrels (2.0×109 m3) of proven reserves in the country's Faja del Orinoco region."

As you are aware, there are Chinese and Russian troops in place in Venezuela right now, working to protect the infrastructure as best they can, and working with the Venezuelan "top brass" in terms of protecting the country from any possible invasion from the US.

Sir, forgive me, but if your alleged "experts" here have any sense, at all, they will paraphrase what my late Grandmother used to say, if things were out of control, and there was nothing to be done, and that phrase was "The horse is already out of the barn!!"

Mr. President, when Guaido faltered, and was unable to rally the Venezuelan people to his side, the US government and military "lost the window" of opportunity for such an action. (And sir, is THIS the best our "intelligence community" could have possibly come up with?!?
The Making of Juan Guaido IF true, they should be fired, en masse!!

The American government and military could have possibly "gotten away" with an action like this, even through the 70s, or 80s; however, at this point in the 21st century, let me tell you what you are facing; and sir, forgive me, but an invasion of Venezuela is going to earn you "The Mother of All Backlashes".

1. Venezuela has never done anything to the US to warrant an invasion; it is a sovereign country where its financial woes, including a collapse in oil prices; political intrigue, and mismanagement of funds and infrastructure, coupled with US sanctions, are primarily responsible for its horrific economic situation today.

2. In light of the fact that we would be invading a sovereign country where Chinese and Russian troops are already on the ground, any attack on Chinese or Russian assets, would be tantamount to an attack against China and Russia, leaving them little choice but to react in kind. And I hope you ask yourself; would a war for Venezuela's oil reserves really be worth World War III?!?

3. Because of a lack of troop strength, the US government would be forced to go back to imposing a draft, to the anger and outrage of the American people.
And I would ad this caveat: the "booming economy" you have been touting, since nearly the beginning of your presidency, has been great for the one percenters; but not so great for a lot of the rest of us. Financial wrangling with China over trade has absolutely crucified smaller farmers here in the US, and they will not soon forget it.

4. I would very much like to remind you, sir: we cannot win what is essentially a ground war from the air. The lessons of Vietnam can only be overlooked at this country's peril; any military advisors who tells you differently, are not telling you the truth.

5. The optics of such an invasion will be horrific, internationally, and the question will be asked; How could a country which holds itself in the highest moral esteem, and is perpetually in a state of self-congratulations for making good, just, and ethical decisions about foreign policy, have transformed into this rapacious, war-mongering, lunatic asylum, in which the inmates have, well and truly, taken over the asylum?!?

Mr. President, please, before it is too late, and the die is cast, abandon this course of action. Let us, for once, be "on the right side of history" by preventing this "Warmageddon" in Venezuela.

With all the US-generated hot spots around the world, where the US government is desperately trying to look like it has had a military "win", but really has not, this country has enough fires raging, geopolitically, before we set another one alight.

Russian Presence in Venezuela an 'Obvious Provocation' - Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused China and Russia of "helping destroy" Venezuela by continuing to support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who Washington has called illegitimate. Pompeo also called the presence of Russian troops in the country an "obvious provocation."

"China and others are being hypocritical in calling for 'non-intervention' in Venezuela's affairs," Pompeo said in a speech in Santiago, Chile, on Friday. "Their own financial interventions have helped destroy the country."

IMF Deal for Ecuador Paved Way for Assange’s Arrest

WikiLeaks has long reported that the $10 billion IMF bailout for Ecuador was closely related to complying with US demands, in particular on revoking the asylum of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. On Thursday, that appeared to come to pass.

Following recent days of Ecuador’s leadership saying Assange’s asylum would not last forever, he was arrested by British police within the London Embassy. Ecuador has tried to present this as related to continuing WikiLeaks operations, and in particular a January leak of Vatican documents.

Ecuador’s economy has been struggling mightily in recent years, and the government has bet much on their ability to secure a bailout. In the end, the US sway over the IMF meant that Ecuador was required to placate the US to get that money.

What was Moreno’s price to commit this betrayal? A 4.2 billion loan guarantee from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), it seems.

Venezuela Walks from OAS as Body Violates Charter in Support of US-Backed Coup

In a bid to legitimize Washington’s flailing coup attempt in Venezuela, the Organization of American States (OAS) has recognized faux-President Juan Guaido’s lackey Gustave Tarre as the new representative from Venezuela.

Reporter Anya Parampil, who was at the meeting in Washington on Tuesday, noted that “Five of the 18 countries that voted for the U.S. measure were recently taken over by pro-IMF governments.” Meanwhile, the Haitian government — currently embroiled in a popular uprising over its mismanagement and embezzlement of funds from a generous deal with Venezuela on petroleum products, known as the PetroCaribe alliance — voted for the measure in order to appease the United States and secure Washington’s support in quashing the uprising.

‘Greatest traitor in Ecuadorian history’: Ex-President Correa slams Moreno over Assange’s arrest

Ecuador’s former president Rafael Correa has slammed his successor Lenin Moreno for “allowing” police to arrest Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, calling the action “a crime humanity will never forget.”
Whereas the former Ecuadorian leader has been highly critical of his one-time political ally for a long while, Thursday’s arrest of Wikileaks co-founder and editor was a betrayal of a higher order, it has been suggested.

IMF approves $4.2bn loan for Ecuador

The International Monetary Fund on Monday approved a $4.2-billion, three-year loan for Ecuador, part of a broader aid package to help support the government's economic reform program.

The Washington-based lender agreed to the terms of the financing late last month, and the final approval of the IMF board on Monday releases the first installment of $652-million.

US Calls on UN to Revoke Credentials of Maduro's Gov't

In January, opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president of Venezuela after disputing Nicolas Maduro’s May re-election. Washington immediately endorsed Guaido and called on Maduro to step down.

US Vice President Mike Pence urged the United Nations to strip Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government off its UN credentials.

The US Vice President also called on the organisation to recognise opposition leader Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of the Latin American nation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If the UN caves on this (violating its own charter) then it will lose what little remains of its credibility.

US caused billions of dollars in damage to Venezuela since 2013 – Russian envoy to UN

Russia's ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia has accused the US of causing "billions of dollars" of damage to Venezuela ?since 2013 and said Washington "artificially provoked" a crisis to overthrow the legitimate government.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Venezuela on Wednesday, Nebenzia said the Trump administration was "picking the pockets" of the country while at the same time calling "for urgent assistance to the Venezuelan people."

US Takes Illegal, Dangerous Actions Toward Regime Change in Venezuela

The United States is taking illegal and dangerous actions to execute regime change in Venezuela. In January, Juan Guaidó declared himself “interim president,” in a strategy orchestrated by the United States to seize power from President Nicolás Maduro.

In March, Guaidó announced that “Operation Freedom,” an organization established to overthrow the Maduro government, would take certain “tactical actions” beginning on April 6. Part of the plan anticipates that the Venezuelan military will turn against Maduro.

This strategy is detailed in a 75-page regime change manual prepared by the U.S. Global Development Lab, a branch of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The manual advocates the creation of rapid expeditionary development teams to partner with the CIA and U.S. Special Forces to conduct “a mix of offensive, defensive, and stability operations [in] in extremis conditions.”

UN Security Council Convenes to Discuss Venezuela Crisis

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is convening on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela.

In March, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) rejected both US and Russian resolutions on Venezuela. The US resolution, vetoed by Russia, China and South Africa, called for holding a new presidential election in the Latin American country under international supervision.

The Russian resolution reaffirmed the right of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government to coordinate aid deliveries to the Latin American country.

The OAS Sacrifices its Charter for Trump’s Desperate Venezuelan Regime Change BidShare

On April 9th, the Organization of American States’ permanent council voted under US pressure to adopt a resolution installing Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido’s representative, Gustavo Tarre, to the governing body.

It was just the latest attempt to legitimize Guaido’s shadow regime by an increasingly anxious Trump administration flustered by the failure of the coup it set into motion this January 5.

Tellingly, when I pressed the US ambassador to the OAS, Carlos Trujillo, to specify what gave the council legal authority to recognize Gustavo Tarre as Venezuela’s new representative, he was unable to offer a coherent explanation.
