Iran seizes commercial ship, U.S. forces respond

The ship, a Marshall Islands flagged vessel, was transiting the Strait into the Persian Gulf on an internationally recognized maritime route when the the Iranian military contacted the vessel and directed the ship master to "divert further into Iranian Waters," according to Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This stinks of a deliberate provocation to derail the P5+1.

The above is the tracking map for the vessel, M/V Maersk Tigris. The little squiggle is where it was intercepted by the Iranian patrol boat.

This is the same tracking map, but with the shipping channels and Iranian territorial waters overlaid. From this it is obvious that the M/V Maersk Tigris was following the normal shipping route, but then did indeed alter course to starboard and into Iranian territorial waters. The only question is why? The tracking system indicates accurate GPS data was being received by the ship, so spoofing is out. There are no geographic features justifying a turn to starboard. Was the Captain of the M/V Maersk Tigris "persuaded" by the US Government to trigger a confrontation?
