Fairbanks area hammered by heavy snow, power outages

Fairbanks has been paralyzed by major power outages following overnight snowfall more than a foot deep in some places, with more coming down across the region Wednesday morning.

The Golden Valley Electric Association said shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday that more than 20,000 people lost power at some point overnight Tuesday as heavy snows hit Fairbanks, with about three-quarters of them still in the dark at midday Wednesday. It had initially reported between 7,000 and 9,000 people without power from the outages, caused by snow and ice-laden trees hitting power lines.
