Iran Welcomes Extension of Ceasefire in Afghanistan

The Iranian foreign ministry voiced pleasure in the Afghan government and Taliban's commitment to the temporary ceasefire in the country, and welcomed its extension.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi welcomed the extension of the ceasefire in Afghanistan on Sunday, calling for continued commitment and respect for it by both sides.

He also expressed the hope that continued ceasefire can pave the ground for the start of a new and constructive process for peace talks and establishment of stability and tranquility in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan extended its unilateral ceasefire with the Taliban following an initial truce observed by both sides over the Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

President Ashraf Ghani appealed to the militants to follow the government's lead and enter peace talks.
