US AUTHORISES $1.2BN IN MILITARY AID TO EGYPT

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has authorised the release of $1.2 billion in military aid to Egypt, overriding previous human rights concerns that had held up funding.

The figure includes $1 billion for the current 2018 budget year and $195 million earmarked for 2017 which would have been returned to the treasury had it not been spent by the end of the month.

The State Department informed Congress of the move on Friday; congressmen have 15 days to contest the national security waivers allowing the money, known as foreign military financing (FMF), to be delivered.

In July, Pompeo also lifted $195 million in FMF that was originally listed for 2016, but which former secretary of state Rex Tillerson had frozen due to the continuing concerns over the state of human rights under Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

The Trump administration still has “serious concerns about the human rights situation in Egypt” and will continue to raise those concerns with senior Egyptian officials, the State Department said in a statement.

“At the same time, strengthened security cooperation with Egypt is important to US national security. Secretary Pompeo determined that continuing with the obligation and expenditure of these FMF funds is important to strengthening our security cooperation with Egypt,” it concluded.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Secretary Pompeo, you have cleared the allocation of these fund for the Egyptian government which just did this?!?

Egypt Sentences 75 protestors to death after mass trial

Are you simply waiting for those 75 cells to be cleared out, post-executions, so that you can outsource torture to the Egyptian government?!? I understand that, according to HRW, they're pretty damned good at it:

Egypt Torture Epidemic, under Al-Sisi, may be a crime against humanity

The article goes on to state:

"Under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt’s regular police and National Security officers routinely torture political detainees with techniques including beatings, electric shocks, stress positions, and sometimes rape, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today.

Widespread and systematic torture by the security forces probably amounts to a crime against humanity, according to the 63-page report, “‘We Do Unreasonable Things Here’: Torture and National Security in al-Sisi’s Egypt.” Prosecutors typically ignore complaints from detainees about ill-treatment and sometimes threaten them with torture, creating an environment of almost total impunity, Human Rights Watch said."

So sir, please let me get this straight: you are approving one billion one hundred and ninety-five million dollars for Egypt, when we still have homeless Vets sleeping rough in our streets, and our infrastructure decaying right from under us?!?

The granting of Federal money is always tantamount to tacit approval, and that is precisely what you have done, to a government which tortures with impunity.

Sir, forgive me, but from my perspective, this is a very lousy day to be an American old enough to remember what this country was supposed to stand for, and if I remember my American history reasonably well, one of the values for which it did not stand was for the international support of torture.

Did I blink and miss something here, sir?!?
