Trump's 'Space Force' to take shape by 2020: White House seeks $13bn funding to bring military and civilian experts under one command in the 'battlefield' beyond the Earth

An American 'Space Force' proposed by President Trump will take shape within two years and bring military forces and civilian space security authorities under one roof, the White House has said.

Vice President Mike Pence said the Trump administration would look to secure funding for the proposed sixth branch of the military by 2020, the year of the next presidential election.

The new force would be designed to 'ensure that our warfighters have the freedom and flexibility they need to deter and defeat any threat to our security in the rapidly evolving battlefield of space,' he said.

The head of the US Air Force said in September that creating a Space Force would cost about $13 billion for a force of 13,000 people in the first five years.
