Anti-Trump Republican senator Jeff Flake tries to force through legislation to protect Mueller from being fired as Democrats demand hearings on Sessions being forced out

Retiring Republican senator Jeff Flake announced a cross-party plan Thursday to force a vote on legislation to prevent Robert Mueller from being fired.

The bipartisan effort by Flake and Democrat Chris Coons was announced in the wake of Donald Trump firing Jeff Sessions as attorney general and installing persistent Mueller critic Matt Whitaker as acting attorney general.

Whitaker is under pressure to recuse himself from overseeing the probe as a result of his criticisms of it but has made no indication that he would step aside.
