Heavy snow strands 2,000 travelers at airport in Hokkaido

Heavy snowfall in Hokkaido stranded about 2,000 passengers at New Chitose Airport near Sapporo on Saturday. Airlines canceled 105 flights, forcing passengers to spend the night in the terminal.

On Sunday, there was more chaos at the airport as airlines tried to add more flights because planes scheduled to depart Sunday for Tokyo and Osaka were already fully booked due to the end of the New Year holiday period, Fuji TV reported.

More than 20 cms of snow fell on the runway on Saturday, delaying flights as the day progressed. On Sunday, the snow let up and airlines resumed flights but by mid-afternoon, many passengers were still waiting for news about flight availability.
