The new populism European Union Europe 'coming apart before our eyes', say 30 top intellectuals

Liberal values in Europe face a challenge “not seen since the 1930s”, leading intellectuals from 21 countries have said, as the UK lurches towards Brexit and nationalists look set to make sweeping gains in EU parliamentary elections.

The group of 30 writers, historians and Nobel laureates declared in a manifesto published in several newspapers, including the Guardian, that Europe as an idea was “coming apart before our eyes”.

“We must now will Europe or perish beneath the waves of populism,” the document reads. “We must rediscover political voluntarism or accept that resentment, hatred and their cortege of sad passions will surround and submerge us.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

To equate those people who are concerned about the trajectory of the EU, and the ways in which Brussels is stepping on ordinary citizens' toes by requiring an inordinate amount of paperwork and regulations on everything, plus enforced migrations of immigrants with pre-Hitler Germany, is complete codswallop.

And yes, the names of these signatories to this document, and what they have brought to the table, in terms of artistic and other endeavors, is a very incredible, and brilliant, collective CV.

But I have to wonder; have any of these people actually run a business, in the current regulatory environment, with Big Brother Brussels watching every move?!?

Have any of them had to live with the on-going tragedy of their children being beaten, viciously, or worse, by immigrants who believe that they can do this with impunity?!?

The short answer is, most probably not.

I think that the concept of Europe should not be discarded, but needs to be revisited, and reimagined.

That will involve a very thorough, and soul-searching, evaluation of immigration, and think that Australia's policy here might be the basis for such a program in the EU.

Australia allows people to live in that country, and ultimately become citizens on a merit system.

In other words, what skills, values, and professional services, does the immigrant have?!? Are they fluent in English? Are they willing to live, in good faith, around people whose political and religious affiliations may not be their own?!? Are they willing to assimilate?!?

Many years ago, we met a very bright, nice guy who would be the "poster child" for a great immigrant.

He is Muslim; highly well-educated, a great computer animator, who ultimately married a Buddhist, and they named their little Girl Sarah, the name of the wife of Abraham, and mother to Isaiah, in the Old Testament.

This is the kind of resident/citizen this country really needs.

There is nothing wrong with a "merit system", and looking for the best and brightest people to become citizens, because this kind of a system is an "intelligent investing" in that country's future.

But as a European, with Brussels breathing down your back, and mandating that countries take in specific number of refugees who cannot speak the language of their host countries; refuse to learn it; have no marketable skills whatsoever; are bringing diseases to your country which have been dormant for decades; and threaten to kill or hurt you, because you will not change your religion to theirs, would you be happy about the situations in Europe, where certain areas are "no go", for fear of violence?!?

IF the EU had handled the immigration issue better, there would be no calls for Brexit, Frexit, or Drexit in Europe.

People deserve a right to be fully represented by all levels of government as and the EU is not listening to them on this issue at all, because they can, and right now, with impunity.

So, I will put it to you, EU; when does your management become accountable to the people of Europe, by way of clear and fair elections to this office?!?

As we both know, this is only apt to happen when pigs become aerodynamic; and EU, THERE's your problem. Fix it; reimagine it; and please, not one more bureaucratic law until this issue has been sorted.

You're welcome :-) !!!!
