WHO ‘very disappointed’ China has not finalized visas for team investigating origins of coronavirus

World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was “very disappointed” that China had not yet approved plans for a WHO mission being deployed there to investigate the origins of the novel coronavirus.

“Today we learned that Chinese officials have not yet finalized the necessary permissions for the team’s arrival in China,” Tedros said Tuesday during a news conference in Geneva. “I have been in contact with senior Chinese officials, and I have once again made it clear the mission is a priority for the WHO.”

It was a rare critique of Beijing by Tedros, who critics say has not sufficiently held China to account for its initial efforts to downplay or cover up the virus.
