Obama Risks A Domestic Military Intervention

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America's military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the "Obama problem." Don't dismiss it as unrealistic.

America isn't the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn't mean it won't. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it. So, view the following through military eyes:

# Officers swear to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Unlike enlisted personnel, they do not swear to "obey the orders of the president of the United States."

Could we be in for 30 years of global COOLING?

Britain's big freeze is the start of a worldwide trend towards colder weather that seriously challenges global warming theories, eminent scientists claimed yesterday.

The world has entered a 'cold mode' which is likely to bring a global dip in temperatures which will last for 20 to 30 years, they say.

Summers and winters will all be cooler than in recent years, and the changes will mean that global warming will be 'paused' or even reversed, it was claimed.

Israel needs to rethink its Gaza strategy before it's too late

The economic embargo, which has brought severe distress to the inhabitants of Gaza, has not brought down Hamas, nor has it freed kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. The siege has only damaged Israel's image and led to accusations that it has shirked its humanitarian responsibilities in Gaza under international law.

Instead of erring by invoking the default solution of more force, which does not create long-term security or ease the distress of the Palestinians in Gaza, the crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip should be opened and indirect assistance rendered to rebuild its ruins. The same logic that dictates the government's actions in the West Bank - creating an economic incentive to prevent terror - can and must work in the Gaza Strip as well.

What next, Viva Palestina?

As Egypt stoops to the ultimate collusion with Israel and the West to starve Gaza by banning future humanitarian aid convoys, Stuart Littlewood advises Viva Palestina to deal directly with Gaza: “A large armada of boats led by a multi-faith alliance demanding freedom of the seas and the right to an armed escort, could be the best vehicle.

”Yes, the REAL international community – that’s ordinary folk like you and me and Viva Palestina and everyone and his dog around the globe – are finally beginning to assert themselves against the corrupt power freaks that strut the world stage.”

Senators: US won't end guarantees

The senators responded to recent speculation regarding ending US financial guarantees to Israel. US envoy George Mitchell alarmed Israeli officials by suggesting last week that the US could use financial pressure to extract new concessions from the Israelis.

"Under American law, the United States can withhold support on loan guarantees to Israel," Mitchell had told PBS interviewer Charlie Rose over the weekend, noting that the previous administration of George W. Bush had done so. But he quickly added that he preferred persuasion to sanctions.

Lieberman said unequivocally that any attempt to cancel financial guarantees to Israel will "not pass Congress."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Joe Lieberman: we knew this would only happen when pigs fly.

However, as you are well aware, under the terms and conditions of the Symington Amendment, it is illegal for the US to be providing any aid whatsoever to Israel.

As reported on 11 February, 2009 in

http://www.antiwar.com/orig/gsmith.php?articleid=14229

:
"The 1976 Symington Amendment prohibits most U.S. foreign aid to any country found trafficking in nuclear enrichment equipment or technology outside international safeguards. Israel has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). If U.S. presidents complied with the Symington Amendment, they would not deliver yearly aid packages to Israel totaling billions of dollars. Presidents make-believe that Israeli nuclear weapons don't exist so Congress can legally continue shoveling the lion's share of the U.S. foreign aid budget to Israel. But this thin pretense is now over. Since Carter's revelation, press outlets such as Reuters chat openly about how Israel's nukes mean that it does not qualify for U.S. aid."

Israelis reject George Mitchell loan guarantee 'threat'

Israeli officials have shrugged off a suggestion that the US could withhold loan guarantees to pressure Israel over the Middle East peace process.

The finance minister said Israel did not need the guarantees, while the prime minister accused the Palestinians of holding up peace negotiations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Fantastic news, ladies and gentlemen! We may no longer have to give Israel what amounts to 3 billion dollars' worth of aid annually!

Maybe we can feed and clothe and rehabilitate those homeless Vets now sleeping in our streets.

Maybe we can build some more hospitals and clinics, and get our roads repaired!

Maybe we can disengage from any present or future integration between the US and Israeli military!

And maybe, in light of the fact that Israel has nuclear warheads but refuses any IAEA inspection of their nuclear facilities (unlike Iran), Americans will wake up to the reality that under the terms and conditions of the Symington Amendment, it is illegal for the US to give Israel any aid whatsoever!

The Surge in U.S. Personal Bankruptcies, Foreclosures and Job Losses

The number of Americans filing for personal bankruptcy rose by nearly a third in 2009, a surge largely driven by foreclosures and job losses.

Overall, personal bankruptcy filings hit 1.41 million last year, up 32% from 2008, according to the National Bankruptcy Research Center, which compiles and analyzes bankruptcy data. It is the highest level of consumer-bankruptcy fillings since 2005. Consumers rushed to file in 2005 before the new bankruptcy laws took effect in October of that year.

IOA: 50,000 Palestinian Jerusalemites to remain outside Jerusalem

The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) has decided that all Palestinians living outside the separation wall that isolated eastern Jerusalem from the West Bank would not be considered inhabitants of the holy city.

Hebrew daily Ha'aretz quoted an official responsible for eastern Jerusalem affairs in the Israeli-controlled Jerusalem municipality as saying that those people, although owning the blue IDs allowing them residence in Jerusalem, would no longer be considered inhabitants of the city.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is ethnic cleansing, pure and simple.

Pakistan: unlawful US drone war kills 140 innocent civilians for 1 CIA-alleged terrorist

Pakistan’s government reported US drones killed only civilians in 39 of 44 attacks on their country in 2009; with over 700 innocent civilians killed, according to Pakistan's most widely-read English newspaper. Pakistan has repeatedly publicly denounced the US attacks, making the US guilty of War Crimes as they do not have explicit permission from Pakistan’s government.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported on 15 October, 2009 in

http://www.timeslive.co.za/news/world/article153252.ece

"President Barack Obama signed a US $7.5-billion aid package for Pakistan into law today, after the US Congress acted to placate critics in Islamabad who warned it violated Pakistani sovereignty."

That aid package has, to large degree, purchased the complicity of the Pakistani government, no matter how much government officials here condemn the attacks.

However, if complete destabilization of Pakistan is the goal, in order to prevent Russia from supplying Iran by land should there be a US/Israeli-let attack against it, then look for these attacks to increase, no matter how many civilians are maimed and killed.

Afghanistan: only the first move in the grand chess game for control of Central Asian resources

So if anyone still thinks that the surge in Afghanistan is strictly intended to defeat the Taliban and the remnants of Al-Qaeda, it's time to think again. This is the new launching point for the eventual control of the Balochistan region. The threat of Iran becoming a major player because of its gas and oil resources and the desire of China to also become involved in that area must be neutralized at all costs.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Anyone or any corporate news outlet blathering about the "necessity" of the US attack against and occupation of Afghanistan "in the name of US security" is lying through their collective teeth.

Our young men and women in our military are dying and getting maimed every day in this part of the world to enable corporations to profit from the potential installation of these pipelines, period, end of discussion.

Israel prevented 17 sight-impaired Gazans from leaving for cornea transplant operations on time; a donation of dozens of corneas went down the drain

The Israeli authorities at Erez checkpoint this week prevented the exit of 17 sight-impaired patients, suffering from various eye diseases, from the Gaza Strip in order to undergo cornea transplants, a treatment that is not available in the Gaza health system. Because of this delay, the medical window of opportunity to perform the transplants for these patients was closed, because corneas can be transplanted only within the shortest time frame (24-48 hours after they are extracted from the donor's body). The patients from Gaza whose exit was prevented will therefore have to wait for another donation, which may or may not happen.

Arming Yemen would play into al-Qa'ida's hands

The dilemma for the US and Britain is that, as they become more openly supportive of the Yemeni government, they will be targeted as its sponsors by its many enemies. The south of the country, independent until 1990 and defeated in a civil war in 1994, is seething with rebellion. Government forces shoot at protesters. There have been many shootings and arrests, and torture is endemic. "They can make a zebra say it is a gazelle" is a chilling Yemeni saying of the government's interrogation methods.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Aside from lumping all Yemeni insurgents into the lump of "al-Qa'ida", what the UK and the US need to comprehend in one hot hurry is the following: when peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.

When people have hope for a meaningful future for themselves, and their families, joining any insurgent group is going to look both unattractive and counter-productive.

But that's going to take an honest effort by Saleh and his government to create the infrastructure which can provide education, jobs, medical care, and a better standard of life for his people. That's what the US and the UK should be pushing for right now here in Yemen.

"Extremism" happens when people have no hope for the future. Give them some hope, in terms of concrete reform, and society has the chance of stabilizing.

Otherwise, a military-only approach will simply exacerbate the problem, not create conditions for healing and reconciliation.

News Middle East Egypt bans Gaza aid convoys

Egyptian authorities have announced that all aid convoys travelling to Gaza will be banned from travelling across Egypt after a riot broke out at the Rafah border crossing earlier in the week.

Ahmed Abul Gheit, Egypt's foreign minister, said in remarks published on Saturday that members of Viva Palestina, the last convoy allowed through, had "committed hostile acts, even criminal ones" on Egyptian soil.

"Egypt will no longer allow convoys, regardless of their origin or who is organising them, from crossing its territory," he told government-backed newspaper Al-Ahram.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Egypt's Mubarak has proven himself once again completely indifferent to the plight of the Palestinians.

ISRAEL’S BEHAVIOR QUESTIONED

They should explain what lies behind the decision to examine annexing Highway 443, which runs through the West Bank, as Israeli territory – as a way of defeating the recent High Court of Justice ruling opening it to Palestinian motorists. And how have an insignificant minority – the settlers – sown fear and managed to extort the country for so many years?

CLIMATEGATE: John Hirst, UK's Top Weatherman, Blasted For Receiving Bonus After Predicting 'Mild Winter' (VIDEO)

John Hirst, the head of the UK's national weather service (Met Office), came under fire this week over the fact that, as the country's top weatherman, he had a predicted a mild winter for Britain, which is instead currently suffering from its biggest cold spell in 30 years. To make matters worse, Hirst, following a significant pay increase, now makes more than the Prime Minister, despite leading an organization notorious for getting its forecasts wrong, the Telegraph reported recently.

Yemen open to dialogue with Qaeda: president

"If Al-Qaeda (militants) lay down their arms, renounce violence and terrorism and return to wisdom, we are prepared to deal with them," Saleh told Abu Dhabi TV in an interview carried by Yemen's Saba news agency on Sunday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sounds great, but if Saleh has absolutely nothing new to offer in terms of jobs, education, infrastructure, transparency in government, the bettering of the lot of his people, the insurgents are going to figure that talking will be of absolutely no use.

Unfortunately, both the US and the Saudis are supporting a regime so corrupt that it has been judged one of the most corrupt in the region, and that takes some doing.

The reason for that support has to do with the reality that the Gulf of Aden is a choke-point for the flow of oil. Control the Gulf, and you control who gets the oil.

The US should, along with the massive upgrade in military aid we are giving Yemen, be insisting that President Saleh and his cohorts make an honest effort to improve the lives of the Yemeni people, and give them hope for the future.

Education, jobs, responsive government, and the belief these opportunities inspire that things are getting actually getting better, make joining any insurgency look infinitely less attractive.

But the US and the government of Yemen need to understand: when peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.

Obama Asks Congress to Bypass Conference Committee to Finalize Health Bill

President Barack Obama asked Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday to speed up efforts to finalize a health bill by renouncing to a traditional conference committee meant to resolve differences between the House and Senate versions, the Washington Post reports.

If Democratic leaders agree, the House would work on and amend the Senate version of the legislation before sending it back to the Senate for a final vote. Renouncing to a conference committee would help speed up action on the health bill and allow a passage before the State of the Union address in early February.

CLIMATEGATE - Winter cold stuns, causes death in South

Mark and Barbara Willard were at home in Wickford, England two weeks ago checking the weather forecast on the Internet before packing for their trip to Orlando -- sunny and 70 degrees.

On Saturday afternoon they had the hoods on their brand new coats pulled tight around their heads as the walked down the International Drive tourist strip. The weather: 35 degrees and cloudy with a chance of icy rain or even snow.

Across Florida, the weather was freakishly cold for a state that's a winter respite for so many. There were snow flurries spotted in several parts of the state, as far south as Naples on the gulf coast. In Miami, the temperature was forecast to drop just below freezing overnight and threatened to break the record for low temperatures in the city.

White House Economic Adviser: Jobs Picture is 'Still Terrible'

Council of Economic Advisers chief Christina Romer said it's devastating that some workers have been unemployed for two years and that job losses were continuing nearly a year after passage of the so-called stimulus bill.

The stimulus bill stimulated the banks, Goldman Sachs, and Wall Street in general.

The stimulus bill took $27 trillion from the American people and gave it to the banks so that the banks could loan it back to us at interest.

But the housing collapse left 10.7 million families owing more than their homes are worth. So some of them are making a calculated decision to hang onto their money and let their homes go. Is this irresponsible?

Businesses — in particular Wall Street banks — make such calculations routinely.

China becomes biggest exporter

China has overtaken Germany as the world's biggest exporter of goods after exports rose for the first time in 14 months, data has shown.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is how you make a nation prosperous' you make products that other nations wish to buy!

Starting about 40 years ago, the United States forgot this most basic economic principle. A generation of managers trained by MBA programs to not respect manufacturing grew up to be CEOs with no respect for manufacturing. Instead of making products to make money they made money the product, treating it like a commodity, packaging it, decorating it, and shifting it back and forth at high speed in the hopes such shaking would make the money grow by magic.

Of course all that really happened is that the Goldman Sachs and Bernie Madoffs simply skimmed off the cream as the cash flowed by and while the sharpsters, grafters, and operators grew fabulously rich the nation as a whole went into a decline. Our cultural admiration went to criminals who seemed to make money appear out of thin air, and our disdain fell on anyone with grease under their fingernails. Manufacturing became equated with lower class. Wealth by any means was the sign of the elect. Even today there are many who still admire Bernie Madoff and Ken Lay for the cleverness they showed in strip-mining the families of America.

The greatness of a nation is not how many tanks and bombs it can make but how many cars, microwave ovens, and heavy appliances it can sell around the world.

America has fallen from that pantheon long ago.

The Mushroom Effect

One could be forgiven for thinking that the neoconservatives who nudge us towards war with Iran are under the effect of the magic mushroom. Obsessed with Iran, their trips take on the shape of a 'mushroom cloud'. Christopher Hitchens is one such example. Writing for The Australian, one of Rupert Murdoch's papers, Hitchens' Mullahs indubitably fancy a mushroom betrays a sly mind that lacks lucidity.

Charges of Palestinian Child torture in Israeli prisons

It appears that the dominant purpose for detaining children in 'Cell No. 36' is to break their spirits in order to extract confessions. This conclusion is supported by the testimony of one child who states that 'on the 10th day of interrogation and because I was under so much pressure, I decided to confess so as to get out of the cell.' All of the children report being kept in 'Cell No. 36' between lengthy interrogation sessions in which clearly prohibited techniques were utilised, such as excessive shackling of the legs and hands as well as position abuse.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And remember, Great Britain is changing their laws so what torturers from Israel may NOT be arrested.

Report: Radical Imam Detained at JFK Airport in 2002

The radical Muslim imam who ministered to at least three Sept. 11 hijackers, the Fort Hood shooter and the Nigerian accused of trying to blow up a U.S. jet on Christmas Day, was taken into custody at New York's JFK Airport on a felony arrest warrant in 2002.

Even though Anwar al-Awlaki had been on the FBI's radar for years, he was let go, most likely because of intervention by Saudi Arabia, classified documents and interviews reveal. Now he continues to train new "martyrs" in Yemen.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Saudi Arabia denies having anything to do with this man's release. As noted below he has a history of consorting with prostitutes, and is suspected by his fellow Imams of working with the CIA.

Al-Qaeda imam emailing Ft Hood killer [and now linked to crotch bomber] was repeatedly arrested for soliciting prostitutes

The probe of the 9/11 attacks soon led Washington FBI agents back to San Diego, where they found that al-Awlaki had twice been busted for soliciting prostitutes in 1996 and 1997 but had avoided jail time. Al-Awlaki has previously described these charges as "bogus." But FBI agents hoped al-Awlaki might cooperate with the 9/11 probe if they could nab him on similar charges in Virginia. FBI sources say agents observed the imam allegedly taking Washington-area prostitutes into Virginia and contemplated using a federal statute usually reserved for nabbing pimps who transport prostitutes across state lines. But in March 2002, al-Awlaki abruptly left the country for Yemen. "When he left town, it was as if the air went out of the balloon," says one FBI source.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This guy was released after a US attorney miraculously rescinded an arrest warrant served on the "radical" Islamist upon his arrival at JFK airport in 2002. His fellow Imams insist he is working for the CIA.

Never Mind the Facts, Let’s Have a War…

This is a propaganda system at work: the choice of words and framework of logic designed to condition people into accepting certain options. In this case, the pre-determined option is a unilateral military strike on Iran either by the US or Israel. In that event, it will of course be reported by the BBC and other western media as a “pre-emptive” military measure to “prevent” Iran from attacking western interests in the region. Reported too, no doubt, will be the “collateral damage” of civilian casualties – unfortunate victims in an otherwise “just cause” to bring a “hardline regime” to abide by “international norms”. This is classic thought engineering that British political essayist George Orwell exposed so brilliantly – the official use of sanitised words to cover the sordid truth.

Umar Fizzlepants Update Including a Picture of the “Burned” Seat

***UPDATE*** As it turns out, the photo of the seat section where Umar Fizzlepants was supposed to have ignited his “sparkler of terror” is even more fraudulent than I first reported. You see, Umar (or the poor Sudanese refugee playing the role of Umar) was seated in 19A… the picture is of 19B, the seat NEXT to Umars. You can see a little of 19A in the upper left part of the picture (below) and the seat is clearly undamaged. The FLOOR however looks like something happened to it, but the seat where the supposed “Underwear Bomb” was, is not damaged at all.

Nice Work Creating New Terrorists, You Morons

American civilian and military leaders have been creating new terrorists through their:

(1) Use of torture

and

(2) Killing of innocent civilians- especially children – in Arabic countries.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The people in these countries don't "hate us because we are free"; they hate us because we are killing, maiming, and torturing their kids, their wives, their families and friends.
