CIA doctors face human experimentation claims

The most incendiary accusation of PHR's latest report, Aiding Torture, is that doctors actively monitored the CIA's interrogation techniques with a view to determining their effectiveness, using detainees as human subjects without their consent. The report concludes that such data gathering was "a practice that approaches unlawful experimentation".

Are US taxpayers funding the Taliban?

U.S. officials confirmed that the preliminary investigation and the proposed hearings were sparked by a GlobalPost special report on the funding of the Taliban last month that uncovered a process that has been an open secret in Afghanistan for years among those in international aid organizations.

The report exposed that the Taliban takes a percentage of the billions of dollars in aid from U.S. and other international coalition members that goes to large organizations and their subcontractors for development projects, in exchange for protection in remote areas controlled by the insurgency.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unflipping believable, but considering the way this ghastly military misadventure has been conducted, not something that wouldn't have ultimately been expected.

Alistair Darling is scrambling to plug a gaping hole in the $1.1 trillion global rescue package agreed by G20 leaders in London — hailed at the time as Gordon Brown’s biggest success.

Some countries, led by Germany, are even calling for the bailout to be scaled back amid fears that it risks burdening economies with too much debt and could encourage inflation.

Pfizer drug breach ends in biggest US crime fine

Pfizer, the world's largest drugs company, has been hit with the biggest criminal fine in US history as part of a $2.3bn settlement with federal prosecutors for mispromoting medicines and for paying kickbacks to compliant doctors.

In a blow to its reputation in the eyes of doctors and patients, Pfizer pleaded guilty to misbranding the painkiller Bextra, withdrawn from the market in 2004, by promoting the drug for uses that were not approved by medical regulators.

Spanish paper: Irving 'expert' on WWII

First the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet cited freedom of the press as its justification for accusing IDF soldiers of harvesting Palestinian organs. Now the Spanish daily El Mundo is using the same argument to defend including Holocaust denier David Irving among its list of experts to be interviewed this week to mark 70 years since the start of World War II.

An interview with Irving, who served time in an Austrian prison for his Holocaust denial, is scheduled to appear in the paper on Saturday, a day after an interview with Yad Vashem's chairman Avner Shalev.

Madoff Victims Call Out FINRA

The American public learned very little with the release of the SEC Inspector General David Kotz’s review of the SEC’s failure to expose the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme. In fact, having just finished reading the Executive Summary of his investigation, I would maintain it is largely an extended regurgitation of much of what Harry Markopolos provided in his Congressional testimony last February.

What was Harry’s conclusion of his exhaustive pursuit to expose the Madoff scam? The SEC is incompetent.

Questioning the Police State, Not Just the Tactics

The torture debate focuses on the wrong issues, serving only to obscure the bigger picture. The real life issue is not that our elected government has used police state tactics on prisoners, but that our elected leaders believe that the United States has some sort of moral authority to define its own set of standards, freeing American spies and soldiers to operate outside of the laws that bind the rest of the human race. The torture debate has merely exposed the terror that our government utilizes everyday, to have its way with the world.

Embassy Guards Gone Wild: The Pictures (NSFW)

The Project on Government Oversight provided me with a series of photographs—a dozen in all—that depict the bacchanalian goings on at Camp Sullivan, home to the ArmorGroup personnel who guard the nearby US embassy compound in Kabul. On Tuesday, POGO sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton detailing a host of explosive charges relating to ArmorGroup's management of the embassy contract, including evidence of "near-weekly deviant hazing and humiliation of subordinates." According to POGO, "witnesses report that the highest levels of AGNA management in Kabul are aware of and have personally observed—or even engaged in—these activities, but have done nothing to stop them."

As you'll see below, POGO really wasn't exaggerating when it spoke of the "Lord of the Flies environment."

What Would the United States Look Like Without the Federal Reserve?

Since H.R. 1207 was introduced by Dr. Ron Paul in Congress this February, there has been a growing movement which questions whether the Fed should continue to operate without more oversight and some question whether or not the Federal Reserve should continue to operate at all.

Currenty, Paul’s “Audit the Fed” legislation has 282 co-sponsors and there are two similar pieces of legislation in the senate. If the legislation is passed, it will allow the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review the Federal Reserve’s balance sheets and their policy deliberations and monetary transactions. Currently Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, opposes the plan, saying it would undermine the Fed’s independence.

Afghanistan for Dummies

I’m going to ask for my money back. I’ve seen this Afghanistan movie before. The first time, Vietnam was in the title.

As in an early scene from the Vietnam version, U.S. military officials are surprised to discover that the insurgents in Afghanistan are stronger than previously realized.

And our protagonist, Gen. Westmoreland — sorry, I mean McChrystal — sees the situation as serious but salvageable. As Westmoreland did with President Lyndon Johnson, McChrystal is preparing to tell President Barack Obama that thousands of more troops are needed to achieve the U.S. objective — whatever that happens to be.

Bush's Third Term - You're Living It

Bush's Third Term?

You're Living It

By David SwansonIt sounds like the plot for the latest summer horror movie. Imagine, for a moment, that George W. Bush had been allowed a third term as president, had run and had won or stolen it, and that we were all now living (and dying) through it. With the Democrats in control of Congress but Bush still in the Oval Office, the media would certainly be talking endlessly about a mandate for bipartisanship and the importance of taking into account the concerns of Republicans. Can't you just picture it?

Bernanke threatens economic crash if Congres audits Fed: damning video of Congressional testimony

The 7-minute video from TJefferson's Ghost is one of the best I've ever seen in economics. It begins with Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke threatening an economic crash if Congress audits the Fed, moves to revelaing headlines of financial corporate profits after taxpayers socialized their gambling losses, then closes with Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner telling Congress that TARP is really a pertetual line of $700 billion credit for him to do with as he pleases as long as Bernanke agrees. That means, if Treasury can sell the troubled assets, that money returns to Geithner's private reserve to buy more assets. As you may know, Harvard's Elizabeth Warren, the chair for the Oversight Panel, reported to the Senate that Treasury is over-paying corporations by about 50%.

Texas Advance Directives Act legalizes "death panel "

Ward: Are end-of-life directives a choice or medical coercion
Posted Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009
Special to the Star-Telegram
The facts are that advance directives to provide treatments are meaningless in Texas and we already have "death panels," courtesy of the Texas Advance Directives Act (TADA). Our "death panels" are called hospital "ethics committees" and TADA allows them to decide to terminate life-sustaining treatments despite the advance directives and wishes of patients and families.
Given the way that medical providers and ethicists have wielded TADA, we should be very wary about government mandates for "end-of-life" counseling, especially when such mandates provide incentives to ration and deny care.

Reporting from Sacramento - While Californians are still feeling the sting of income and sales tax hikes signed into law earlier this year, now comes news that state tax authorities plan to take a little more from their pockets.

For only the second time in 30 years, the tax board is lowering the point where each tax bracket begins, bumping many people into a higher category. At the same time, officials are cutting back some deductions. Everyone will pay more, even people whose bracket or income doesn't change.

The extra sums will total as much as $140 per family, on top of the increases previously enacted.

Astronomers snap most distant black hole in universe, which is 1bn times bigger than the Sun

Astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole near the edge of the known universe.

It lies within a galaxy the size of the Milky Way, which is 12.8billion light-years from Earth. The light from this galaxy has travelled for most of the universe's 13.7billion-year lifespan to reach us.

Most scientists believe the universe is rapidly expanding following a catastrophic event known as the Big Bang.

Study leader Dr Goto said: 'It is surprising that such a giant galaxy existed when the universe was only one-sixteenth of its present age, and that it hosted a black hole one billion times more massive than the sun.

Indoctrination Alert! Protect your kids on Sept. 8th

This Tuesday Sept. 8th President Obama is planning to address the nation's school children DIRECTLY, through a live internet broadcast at 12 noon. If you do not want Obama to have access to your children to say whatever he wants to them during their school hours without you being there, there are a few things you can do:

-Call the school's principal to find out whether the school was planning to show the speech, and if they are, let the principal know that you feel the role of the school is to educate, not to indoctrinate, and that you do not consent to have your child spoken to directly by any politician or government official, for any reason. Maybe if enough parents call, the school will not show the speech to students.

VIEWPOINT: Students need to be able to make informed decision on military service

The federal No Child Left behind Act of 2001 contains a little-known provision that threatens the federal funding of any school refusing to turn over the personal contact information of students in grades 7 through 12 to military recruiters. This action is in violation of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Given the current economic recession, more high school age youth are considering joining the military. At this impressionable age, we must entrust our public schools with the responsibility to protect our children's rights to privacy. Students and parents have complained of multiple cell and home phone calls from military recruiters as well as uninvited recruiters arriving at their houses.

Throw-back Civilization

Jews who compulsively vomit the ubiquitous epithet "cancerous" whenever in danger of having to examine their own collective conscience with regard to Israel makes me wonder whether the bulk of them think for themselves anymore or are just mainstream-conditioned robots like so many westerners, who in spite of a claim of superiority to the rest of the world, nevertheless express semi-independent opinions only on things that are incidental in the long run, like music, movies, fashion and sports.

And when they repeat over and over: "Why us? Why not the Chinese?" are they so mentally fogged that they can't see that Israel claims to be a democracy, and that the West claims that Israel shares its "values", and that the West has long financially supported Israel at taxpayers' expense - the US in generous cash payments (which no doubt has ended up in the coffers of the weapons manufacturers - another way that corporations grow fat on the back of the worker who can't even afford health care) and Canada by allowing millions of dollars worth of tax free status to the Jewish National Fund which overtly and proudly supports apartheid conditions in Israel?

Makena Resort, its Prince hotel now toxic asset

Makena Resort and its hotel, the Maui Prince, are now a toxic asset with creditors including the Swiss government.

UBS, the Swiss banking giant, put together the financing for the eye-popping sale of the resort for $575 million in 2007, using the commercial real estate version of the mortgage-backed residential real estate securities that caused so much grief in the housing market.

Only in this case, according to Barry Sullivan, the Honolulu attorney handling the foreclosure, there was no Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac to purchase the bonds created to fund the deal.

In this case, the lenders foreclose, the court appoints a receiver and eventually the receiver will hold an auction. If anybody bids, then the lenders get back some or all of their money.

1.Why are the students so young?
2.Who decided to choose these particular student groups and why?
3.Why are parents not being provided with a preview or synopsis of the speech?
4.What made the Obama administration think up such a “clever” idea while there has never been any documented precedent?
5.Why is the handout adressing what the “President” wants the students to “do” and not what the country wishes for them to do?

The powers that be in the land of Israel are constantly in opposition to the policies of the ‘ultra orthodox’ group known as Neturei Karta. These are the vocal ‘rabbis’ that have been a thorn in the side of zionism for decades. Their opposition to the establishment of the state of Israel is based on their belief that such a state must not be founded until the coming of the Messiah…. and then must be a state run by the laws set about in the Torah.

Sep 02 11:03

There is a growing trend outside and within Israel itself to oppose the atrocious polices of the state of Israel. When a non Jew speaks out against these policies he is automatically labelled an anti-Semite. A Jew in that position is simply called a self hater.
Both of these groups are growing daily. More and more Jews are realising that the state’s policies are actually working against them, as well as the state itself.

Hate speech law unconstitutional: rights tribunal

The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has ruled that Section 13, Canada's much maligned human rights hate speech law, is an unconstitutional violation of the Charter right to free expression because of its penalty provisions.

The decision released this morning by Tribunal chair Athanasios Hadjis appears to strip the Canadian Human Rights Commission of its controversial legal mandate to pursue hate on the Internet, which it has strenuously defended against complaints of censorship.

But Mr. Hadjis found that that, today, the pursuit of Section 13(1) cases "can no longer be considered exclusively remedial, preventative and conciliatory in nature." Rather, the law "has become more penal in nature."

Prejudice in Paradise

Hawaii Has a Racism Problem

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have to call "Bull Biscuits" on this one, but then it is the SPLC making these allegations.

My wife and I have lived here in Hawaii for 12 years and we have never encountered any hostility from the Hawaiians. Indeed on the very first day we were here the rental car we were driving broke down and numerous people stopped to offer aid.

Yes, the economic problems and drug trade create crime in Honolulu just as they do in any other large city, but in the end, Hawaiians are just like people everywhere. They are a mirror, and what you get back is in great part dependent on what you put out.

Aloha is not a one-way deal. If you are polite and respectful, you get polite and respectful back. If, on the other hand, you come across as presumably superior and arrogant, which sadly a lot of tourists and military do, then you will hit a lava brick wall. Nobody responds well to be treated as an inferior, especially the Hawaiians, who after all are well aware that the United States stole their country from them.

But as for these claims of racially-based attacks, I have not seen them in 12 years, and have to wonder if this isn't a staged situation to wreck public sympathy for the sovereignty movement.

Gaza: A People under Siege

The Israeli blockade of Gaza Strip, now in its third year, has shown the extremely deep seated hypocrisy in what is put forth as pristine, faultless, superior “western values.” Westerners have been inoculated against any sympathy for the victims by the skillful portrayal in the western corporate media of them as perpetrators and mad suicide bombers, instead of people in the midst of a serious crisis of human dignity and people fighting for the right to live on their own land. Rather than feeling sympathy, the westerner at best has been taught that “both sides are at fault” and that people should “stop killing each other.”

It is certainly not true that the Soviet Union was to blame for it, as so many in the “West” would have it. Concurrently, the fact that it was the Soviet Union that defeated Nazi Germany almost single-handedly (as proven by British historian Norman Davies), is not found in mainstream “Western” historiography, and most certainly not in school and college textbooks, let alone on TV or the popular media. This is how the “West” has been distorting history since 1945.

Steve Rosen Accuses AIPAC of Espionage

Steven J. Rosen’s defamation lawsuit against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is now entering a critical phase. A series of cross-filings stakes out the critical court terrain. Rosen intends to show that obtaining and leveraging classified U.S. government information in the service of Israel is common practice at AIPAC. He claims it was unfair for AIPAC to fire and malign him in the press after he was indicted on espionage charges in 2005. AIPAC’s defense team is committed to getting the case thrown out on technicalities before it goes to trial early next year.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified. I cannot tell
you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information."
US official quoted in Carl Cameron's Fox News report on the Israeli spy ring and its connections to 9-11.

Afghan War's Blowback for India's Children?

More precisely, depleted uranium reportedly used in wars in these countries may be the cause of the deformities and disorders on the rise in India's northwestern state, according to a team based in the city of Faridkot.

Winds from Afghanistan may have carried to the state a large quantity of highly toxic uranium, which has contaminated water and increased uranium in bodies to dangerous levels. This apprehension was raised at least five months ago by the team of the Baba Farid Center for Special Children, a nongovernmental organization (NGO), where some of the affected kids have been undergoing treatment.

Red Crescent: “Army fired at our medics as they to save the life of a wounded child"

Mo’tasem Awad, in charge of the International Humanitarian Law department at the Red Crescent stated that Israeli soldiers opened fire at Red Crescent medics while they were trying to approach a wounded child who died of his wounds.

The child, Mohammad Riyadh Nayef, 15, from al Jalazoun refugee camp, was shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday after a round of live ammunition hit him in the chest.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is precisely the kind of behavior US military aid to Israel buys with your tax dollars: doesn't it make you proud as hell?!?!

Is it anti-semitic to defend Palestinian human rights?

The problem is fundamental: Founding a modern state on a single ethnic or religious identity in a territory that is ethnically and religiously diverse leads inexorably either to politics of exclusion (think of the 139-square-mile prison camp that Gaza has become) or to wholesale ethnic cleansing. Put simply, the problem is Zionism.” (“Zionism is the problem: The Zionist ideal of a Jewish state is keeping Israelis and Palestinians from living in peace,” by Ben Ehrenreich, Los Angeles Times, March 15, 2009.)

$600 for a Kalashnikov – a sign of bloodshed to come in Afghanistan

The price of Kalashnikovs has doubled in Afghanistan. For a country awash with arms, the fact that the weapons are now fetching $600 apiece is a cause of some surprise, but a surge of demand is to blame for the increase, with a steady stream of weapons said to be heading for the north.

Bush’s Third Term? You’re living it

Now, here’s the funny part. This dark fantasy of a third Bush term is also an accurate portrait of Obama’s first term to date. In following Bush, Obama was given the opportunity either to restore the rule of law and the balance of powers or to firmly establish in place what were otherwise aberrant abuses of power. Thus far, President Obama has, in all the areas mentioned above, chosen the latter course. Everything described, from the continuation of crimes to the efforts to hide them away, from the corruption of corporate power to the assertion of the executive power to legislate, is Obama’s presidency in its first seven months.

US Rules Out Negotiations With New Japan Govt on Base Deal

Japan’s incoming Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has called for a review of the bases agreement, as well as a broader review of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with the United States and the complete closure of the Okinawa base. The party has also promised to end the Japanese military’s role in the Afghan War by the end of the year.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It will be very interesting to see how all of this unfolds, and how far incoming Prime Minister Hatoyama will be willing to go to accomplish his aims.

Calls for Further Escalation Put Obama in Tight Spot on Afghanistan

Though it seems unlikely that the Obama Administration will really consider paring back its commitment to all-out war in the nation, regardless of cost and death tolls, it does seem like the days of escalation without political opposition are over.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Afghanistan has the geopolitical nickname of the "Grave of Empires"; it will be no different with this current US military misadventure, and it was sheer lunacy for anyone involved with the alleged "planning" for this war that the outcome would be any different for the US than it was for Britain, or the old Soviet Union.

US denies parole to American Indian activist Leonard Peltier

"The interest of justice would be best served by granting Leonard Peltier parole," Angela Wright, a US researcher at Amnesty International, said in a statement.

She called on the Parole Commission to reconsider its decision, pointing to "the concerns around his conviction, the fact that appeals before the courts have long been exhausted and that he has spent more than 32 years in prison."

Amnesty called for the "immediate release" of Peltier, citing "concerns about the fairness" of his conviction.

Webmaster's Commentary:

All three witnesses against Peltier have recanted and claimed that the FBI coerced their testimony.

Peltier is the victim of an FBI frame-up, which explains the intensity of the FBI's interest in keeping him locked up as a potential public embarrassment.

The historical fact is that the FBI does indeed frame innocent people and send them to jail.

Minister Peled: No agreement on settlement freeze

Speaking at a conference labeled 'Preserving Jerusalem and the Golan Heights', Peled said he heard while visiting Germany with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "Jews will continue to live and build in Jerusalem".

Regarding the peace process he said, "We must talk with whoever is willing to talk with us, but we mustn't lose our assets."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to President Obama: the Israeli government has just spit in your face, and told you it's raining on the settlements issue.

The one possible lever you have in this issue is the one lever you refuse to use, and that is the immediate cessation of all military and financial aid to Israel.

You've been punked here. The world knows it; the Palestinian and Arab leadership know it.

The issue of these settlements, the issue of Israel actually declaring their borders, and the Palestinian right of return are three critical areas which must be resolved before peace and ever come to this region.

It's apparent you haven't gotten the message: Israel is thoroughly disinterested in peace,no matter what the leadership says, and is only interested in acquiring by territory, by any means necessary.

The Secret Service at Booker Elementary: The Dog That Did Not Bark

If the events of 9-11 were truly a surprise to the United States Government then there is no way the Secret Service could have known there wasn't a hijacked or stolen plane heading towards Booker Elementary School that very second.

The Secret Service did nothing. The dog did not bark.

The Secret Service should be in that video, but they are not. It is clear from their inaction that they KNEW FOR A FACT THAT THE PRESIDENT WAS NOT A TARGET OF ONE OF THE HIJACKED PLANES. The intended targets of the planes had to have been known.

The dog did not bark because the criminal was its master.

Contractors Outnumber U.S. Troops in Afghanistan

What is clear, the report says, is that when contractors for the Pentagon or other agencies are not properly managed — as when civilian interrogators committed abuses at Abu Ghraib in Iraq or members of the security firm Blackwater shot and killed 17 Iraqi citizens in Baghdad — the American effort can be severely undermined.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No, what is clear is that the US military doesn't have enough boots on the ground, and is stressed almost to the breaking point, if private contractors are making up 65% of the troop strength here.

One has to wonder, given the muscularity of Obama's foreign policy commitments, if we will see a return to some sort of a draft under his watch.

Taliban Surprising U.S. Forces With Improved Tactics

The Taliban has become a much more potent adversary in Afghanistan by improving its own tactics and finding gaps in the U.S. military playbook, according to senior American military officials who acknowledged that the enemy's resurgence this year has taken them by surprise.

In the spring, Obama outlined a broad new direction for the war that he said his predecessor had starved of attention and resources. He changed the military leadership on the ground, asked Congress for additional money and authorized more manpower. The administration has said that it expects the strategy -- still barely off the ground -- to show results in a year to 18 months.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This should be absolutely no surprise to our military leadership, in light of how adept the Taliban became at fighting the Russians, with covert US aid and instruction.

And a short memo to President Obama: you don't have a year to 18 months in Afghanistan. The public is exhausted with an 8 year military campaign which has been going nowhere.

And thinking Americans do understand precisely the reasons we are there; to install pipelines to control Eurasian oil, and protect the drug trade, from which so many profit so handsomely.

Report: State Dept. extends Blackwater contract in Iraq

The mercenary group formerly known as Blackwater International, which was banned from Iraq by its government after a Baghdad massacre which killed 17 civilians, will see its contract extended in the country by the U.S. State Department, according to a published report.

Controversy has surrounded the private security firm practically since it was founded, but erupted anew recently when former employees accused Blackwater’s founder and former CEO of murdering or facilitating the murders of other employees who were preparing to blow the whistle on his alleged criminal activities.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Well, there's one thing you can say about Erik Prince, Blackwater's founder: he does know where the bodies are buried...literally.

Otherwise, in the case of an ever mushrooming scandal, how do you explain this contract renewal?

Unflipping believable.

Pull my finger: Jihadist who blew himself up on Saudi prince's private jet hid explosives in his anus

Al Qaeda, meanwhile, claimed responsibility for the suicide attack and said that the bomber, Abdullah Hassan Taleh Al Asiri, had managed to pass security checkpoints and board a private aircraft, Site Intelligence said yesterday.

A statement posted on jihadist forums by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said Al Asiri passed through checkpoints at Najran airport, near the Yemeni border, and Jeddah airport, the US monitoring service said.

It said the attacker concealed the explosives in his anus, allowing him to evade detection.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This one bomber underscores the fact that there are very few of them, and also the fact that a determined bomber can still get past all the fondling laptop=-dropping security goons at the airports.

At last, man-made climate change is a threat - engineered by the global-warming fanatics themselves

Man-made global warming is a fantasy. Climate change is occurring – as it always has – and is harmless. The same cannot be said for the unspeakably irresponsible proposals of scientists whose egos have far outstripped their knowledge. For now the danger is that man-made climate change will genuinely take place - engineered by the global warming alarmists themselves, who cannot leave well alone.

The suggestion, for example, that iron powder should be scattered into the seas to encourage plankton, or that particles should be released in the atmosphere to mimic the effects of volcanic eruption in initiating global cooling (if the super-volcano beneath Yellowstone Park in America erupts, such efforts will be superfluous) are breathtakingly absurd.
