Porn probe snags S.F. planning officials

It seems the gang over at San Francisco's Planning Department has been looking at more than zoning codes on their computers - namely, porn.

According to City Hall sources, Planning Director John Rahaim has recommended the firing of four high-ups - including veteran Zoning Administrator Larry Badiner - for allegedly receiving and in some cases circulating X-rated photos and videos for years.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The SEC, state senators surfing porn right in the Senate chambers, now this...Government is turning into one giant circle-jerk!

Israel says talks to fail as US envoy visits

Indirect talks with the Palestinians are doomed to failure, Israel said on Wednesday just hours before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to meet the US envoy over the stalled peace process.

"This won't work ... indirect talks, proximity talks will not yield results," Intelligence Minister and deputy prime minister Dan Meridor said in remarks published on the front page of the Jerusalem Post.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell: please, come home, and stay home. Stop wasting even more of US taxpayers' dollars on these frequent flights to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem: they are of utterly no use.

Israel doesn't want peace; it wants territory by any means necessary, which is why we are seeing the beginning of the brisk Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and the forcible expulsion of Palestinians from those areas to Gaza.

Because the US government steadfastly refuses to pull the plug on the 3 billion dollars' worth of aid it gives an intransigent Israel annually (while homeless Vets sleep in our streets) the US has no real leverage left for dealing effectively with Israel.

Times Square bombing suspect's life had unraveled

Webmaster's Commentary:

If you look at this objectively, this guy wounds like a lot of Americans, losing his home, unable to find work, and angry at the US Government's wars based on lies.

Also, note what is ABSENT. There is no mention that he was a practicing Muslim. NO mention of a mosque, no mention of religion at all, yet FIX News as part of their war-hysteria, keeps referring to him as a Muslim terrorist.

My read is that Shahzad is another Joe Stack, who was forced to watch a lifetime of work dissolve before his eyes because the US Government destroyed the nation's economy, and Congress bet their own fortunes on the downfall. The media is trying to sell "terrorist" because they fear Americans understanding that their fellow Americans have reached the breaking point, and striking back at the bankers and the politicians is the nest logical step on the path to the collapse of the nation.

Iran's president defiant in face of new sanctions

After months of campaigning to avert new U.N. sanctions, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad summed up his case Tuesday and dismissed the threat of further economic penalties over his country's nuclear program.

"While we do not welcome sanctions, we do not fear them either," he said. "It seems to us that the structure of the Security Council is undemocratic and unjust, and is unable to bring about security. ... This Security Council will completely lose its legitimacy."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Ahmadinejad is not being "defiant" in making these statements; he is simply being realistic.

And in light of the fact that China is Iran's number one trading partner, and the Chinese leadership has stated repeatedly that sanctions are not a way forward, I frankly wouldn't bet on a new round of sanctions coming, as China wields a veto on the Security Council.

And, of course, it does not help that Israel, which has been documented as having a nuclear arsenal, refuses to become a signatory to the NNPT, and will not allow inspections of their nuclear sites.

Guantanamo hearing: Canadian teen was sedated when questioned

Defense attorneys said the testimony from a decorated Army master sergeant identified only as Interrogator No. 2 showed that the military had mistreated Khadr and created a coercive environment for his later confessions to throwing a hand grenade that killed U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer.

"You got a guy who is 15, seriously wounded, who has had multiple surgeries and that's the first time the United States government takes a statement from him to use in his prosecution," said defense attorney Kobie Flowers. "Now whether it is torture, cruel, inhumane, degrading treatment or simply involuntary ... I don't think any federal judge in the United States would allow that type of conduct."

Not Much Time Remains for Israel- A Film Review by Gilad Atzmon

To a certain extent Suleiman’s latest film reminded me of Ramzy Baroud’s book My Father Was a Freedom Fighter. Both works chart a personal and devastating expedition into hopelessness. Both accounts are saturated with repeated failures and betrayals, both Baroud and Suleiman are courageous enough to criticise their collective narrative and yet, both pepper their story with some staggering wit, hope and humour. They make you smile just when you are about to sob.

Obama is biggest recipient of BP’s political action cash in the last 20 years

President Barack Obama is the biggest recipient of BP political action committee donations of any political candidate in the last 20 years, according to the Center for Responsive Politics and an analysis published Wednesday by Politico.

Obama's take from the company whose drilling site is leaking tens of thousands of gallons of day into the Gulf of Mexico: $77,051.

His massive take from the company responsible for an ever-growing oil spill off the Louisiana coast is sure to raise eyebrows among those who question the Administration's response to the spill.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Presidents, Senators, and Congressional Representatives are all simply "acquisitions" of those powerful corporations which will have need of their services at some point. We the People are of absolutely no consequence to them, save as an allegedly endless pool of money to be taxed.

This is simply the reality of the political beast in the US.

It will truly be interesting, in light of Obama's having been "acquired" by BP, to see the extent to which BP will be made financially responsible for the massive cleanup of the Gulf.

US Government Now 96.5% of the Mortgage Market Q1, 2010

The US Government underwrote 96.5% of the mortgages in the 1st quarter 2010, up from 90% 2009. How many homes do you think would have sold without the US government intervening in the mortgage markets through Fannie, Freddie, Ginnie and the FHA?

Do you think mortgages rates would be 5.12% without the US government writing 96.5% of the mortgages? Would mortgages be this low without the Fed holding interest rates at near 0% at you the savers expense, and the Fed buying $1.2 trillion in securitized mortgages so, among other things, Fannie and Freddie can keep buying up pumped out mortgages?

The sadistic logic behind Israel’s siege of Gaza

Rules that allow the importation of cinnamon but not coriander might seem arbitrary and it’s unlikely that further documentation from the Israelis will show otherwise. But there does appear to be a sadistic logic at work here. Nothing more effectively reinforces a sense of powerlessness in a population than for the minutiae of everyday life to be under the constant, arbitrary and callous control of an invisible and inaccessible power. This is the logic and practice of subjugation. It is an exercise in the crushing of human will.

Israeli forces fire at deportees approaching Gaza crossing

Gaza – Israeli forces reportedly opened fire at two recently deported Palestinians attempting to transit through the Erez crossing, in northern Gaza on Tuesday.

The pair said they were attempting to return to the West Bank after having been deported last week in accordance with an Israeli military order defining them as “infiltrators.”

Ahmad Auda Abu Shallouf said he was trying to reunite with his wife and four children. “I am ready to stand trial in an Israeli court. Let them try to prove that I represent a threat to Israel’s security but if they fail, let them shoot me dead and send me back to my children,” he said. The second deportee, Muhammad Sha’ban, said his family “desperately” needed him and he wished to return to them.

Worse Than 1789 ?

The French Revolution actually got off to a better start than it is remembered for. A progressive opposition put together a new legislature, the National Assembly. They undertook the writing of a constitution. But it all fell apart rather quickly since the dim-witted King and his cohorts didn't really get into that old changing times spirit and their lack of cooperation -- not to mention their decadence -- provoked the more violent factions of the common people to form that kraken of politics, the mob. What a goddamned mess it turned into -- a revolving cast of mob masters, each worse than the last, whipping up the crowds to ever more horrible enormities of human vivisection -- a political process that had gone hopelessly out of control. Despite the agile precedent of their friend, the new USA, quickly resolving its own rebellion into a functioning government of law, France opted for a bloody clusterfuck -- which went on for eight more years.

Whoops! CO2 has almost nothing to do with global warming, discovers top US meteorologist

The other night I had a nightmare in which a general election was approaching and all three main competing parties had the same suicidal policy. They all believed in this thing called the Big Bad Fairy and were convinced that the only way to drive off the BBF and her evil hordes was by spending huge sums of taxpayers’ money – £18 billion a year was, I believe, the figure quoted in the nightmare – and by ruining the country with ugly, spinning Fairy Towers for the bad fairy hordes to nest in.

Then I woke up and found…

Seriously, though, what do we do? How we can possibly stop the environmental and energy policy of our next government being based on what US meteorologist Dr Roy Spencer calls “the worst case of mass hysteria the world has known.”?

One for All and All for… Myself – Why you shouldn’t believe OPEC’s reports

In December 2008, after OPEC warned of “substantial cutbacks,” I voiced my strong opinion that the members of the Dirty Dozen would cheat, because cartels always cheat. Sure enough, despite all the talk about production cutbacks, even more oil flowed out of OPEC.

The harsh truth is that the whole honor and brotherhood thing may work for the Three Musketeers, but it’s a non-starter when, like the OPEC members, you have to foot the bill for hefty social programs.

On April 19, the Algerian energy minister said that OPEC would probably do nothing to restrain rising oil prices, despite concerns that persistently high energy costs would hurt the fledgling global economic recovery.....

Will Obama support democracy in Kyrgyzstan?

The Obama administration has been slow to recognize and cautious in supporting the provisional government whose method and legitimacy in taking power has been widely questioned. To be sure, it was not a peaceful democratic revolution, but this is no cause for the US to remain aloof.

The democratic activists who challenged Mr. Bakiyev’s authoritarianism had four primary demands: 1. an end to the president’s nepotism and cronyism, 2. the cessation of political persecution; 3. respect for democracy and human rights; and 4. an end to corrupt privatization of state assets.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Obama administration might be less than enthusiastic about embracing the new government here because it demonstrates that when people have had enough of nepotism, cronyism, political persecution, disrespect for democracy and human rights, and privatization of public assets, they might just rise up against an unjust government as the only way possible to achieve change.

In this country, the Democrats and Republicans consistently entreat and attempt to reassure people that if only people vote for them, there will somehow, magically, be a change in the status quo for We the People.

However, intelligent observers of the American political scene understand clearly that this is not at all true.

Congress members have simply become an acquisition by the large corporations, and sometimes, the interests of foreign governments (as is the case with Israel). And the only real "party" which seems to exist is the War Party, because so many Congress members are so heavily invested in the very profitable defense industry. Those companies producing unique and varied products which kill and mutilate are very much in demand these days, as are the services of companies which provide contract mercenaries and military supplies.

Over the last 40 years, there has been a very deliberate transfer of wealth to the most wealthy, and that includes the millionaires in Congress and the Senate, who have absolutely no interest whatsoever as to what happens to their constituents, as long as their own financial agendas are served.

The high-paying jobs have been outsourced, leaving many with no way to pay the mortgage on the home loans for which they originally qualified completely. Homes are worth far less than they originally cost, leaving those home owners still standing "under water" with negative equity.

Infrastructure has been allowed to collapse; bridges, roads, levees, shorelines, hospitals, coal mines, oil rigs, and schools are all in horrendous states of disrepair, and there is no money left to fix them.

But of course, none of this really matters to our alleged Representatives in Congress.

They are completely cozy with Wall Street, as that is where a lot of their personal fortunes are made, because they have access to the best information they can possibly get. And of course, those Wall Street companies, in turn, contribute to their campaigns to keep intelligent regulation out of the industry.

And the bail-outs of the banks, etc., with public money?! That was to prevent their own fortunes from going south. What the bailout bill is going to do to you or your grandkids, financially, is none of their concern.

These consistent wars without end? Fought with public money for private profit

The war in Iraq (which shows every sign of exploding once again into horrendous violence) was about oil; yet, no American company actually got any rights to that oil.

The war in Afghanistan? Fought to "pacify" the Afghan people enough to install pipelines with which to control Eurasian oil, and of the drug trade, from which so many profit so handsomely.

The lesson of the successful Kyrgyzstan rebellion can be characterized as question which many thinking Americans are asking themselves right now.

If you continue to vote for national leadership, yet absolutely nothing changes, except for the stubborn worsening of your life because of crippling tax debt, the inability to find a decent job, further erosion of your civil liberties; if you find yourself trapped, desperately attempting to work within a system which is gamed against you; what then?!?!?

Mayor Bloomberg: NYC Bomb Suspect Could Be Someone Who “Didn’t Like Health Bill”

Chief amongst the many questions that that still are left unanswered regarding the failed car bomb last Saturday night is who would do such a thing. While the Pakistan Taliban have claimed responsibility, experts remain skeptical. Some have surmised that the car’s proximity to the headquarters of Comedy Central’s parent company Viacom is a clue. But on tonight’s CBS Evening News Mayor Mike Bloomberg suggested that it may be someone who simply didn’t like the health care bill.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It has become obvious that the attempted NY bombing was just another angry US citizen striking back at the financial system that ruined his life. He wasn't the first (see Joe Stack) and he won't be the last.

But if there is one lesson to be learned from watching the side show going on it is that everyone in the politics and media sees every news story not as a revelation of fact and truth but as merely another opportunity to propagandize whatever their agenda happens to be.

More on the CCX Carbon Trading Scandal

I have been doing some digging on the CCX carbon trading scandal the last few days, and I came across this 2006 publication by Tseming Yang – a professor at Vermont Law school. It confirms much of what Glenn Beck has already discussed, and sheds more light on the inner workings of the scandal

Draft of Secretive International Copyright Treaty Leaked -- Confirms Fears About Internet Freedom

The Dutch leak succeeded in blowing the issue wide open by identifying precisely which countries posed barriers to transparency. The document identified the U.S., Singapore, South Korea, and a trio of European countries as the remaining holdouts. Once publicly identified, the European countries quickly reversed their positions. The E.U. now unanimously supports the releasing of the text alongside Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Switzerland. With the outing of the transparency issue, it will fall to the U.S., which is widely viewed as the critical stumbling block, to justify its insistence on keeping the treaty secret.

Michael Bloomberg Proves Himself to be a Fool and Should Resign

Michael Bloomberg should resign from office. He has proven himself to be a fool.

It is truly stunning that Bloomberg’s initial reaction to the car bomb in Times Square was to blame tea party activists, not Islamic terrorists.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Of course, this failed NY bomb is not Islamic terror either. Shahzad Faisal is another Joe Stack; a victim of the predatory US economic system, who wanted to strike back after the bank foreclosed on his home.

Obama and Elie Wiesel to have lunch

The Obama administration has been aggressively stepping up its outreach to the Jewish community in the past couple weeks. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton addressed the American Jewish Committee conference last week along with visiting Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who also received an honor guard with Defense Secreatry Robert Gates at the Pentagon, as well as a 40 minute meeting with Obama and National Security Advisor Jones.

Israel's stance on nuclear arms complicates efforts against Iran

It's buried as Point 31 in a working paper being circulated by Egypt and other nonaligned parties at the Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference in New York: a pledge by countries signing the treaty that they will not permit the transfer of any nuclear-related equipment, information, materials or "know-how" to Israel as long as that country refuses to sign the NPT or put its nuclear facilities under safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This will only happen when pigs fly, which means we will probably never have a "nuclear-free" Middle east.

And as to the continual, pathological drum beat of accusations of Iran developing a nuclear weapon:

1. Iran is a member of the NNPT. All their nuclear work is inspected by the IAEA.

2. To date, neither diversion of any nuclear materials has been found by IAEA inspections, nor have Iranian nuclear materials been enriched beyond the level necessary to fuel a nuclear power plant.

Medic at Guantanamo hearing says Khadr chained to door

A former U.S. Army combat medic testified Monday that he once found Canadian teen captive Omar Khadr chained by the arms to the door of a five-foot-square cage at a U.S. lock-up in Afghanistan, hooded and weeping.

Pentagon prosecutors called M, who treated Khadr's injuries twice daily in Afghanistan until Khadr was transferred to Guantanamo, to defend Khadr's treatment as humane. M's testimony, however, was the first by a government witness to corroborate a portion of an affidavit Khadr drew up describing abusive treatment.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are many problems with US agents torturing prisoners of war for "confessions" which are simply intended to be propaganda rants to justify continued military aggression against certain groups of people who just happen to be living over natural resources the US government wants to claim as "ours".

First, by so doing, the US has, for all practical intents and purposes, withdrawn from every human rights treaty to which it has ever been a signatory.

Secondly, no US politicians or citizen can ever speak again about how the US loves human dignity and human rights with a straight face when we torture.

And third (all you with family serving the US military, please pay attention here), when the US tortures prisoners of war to extract "confessions", it gives carte blanche to any hostile foreign country to do precisely the same.

Report: No spying in Pa. school laptops case

Judges ban secret evidence in Guantánamo compensation case

Ministers and the security services were blocked today from using secret information to defend a damages claim by six former Guantánamo Bay detainees.

Binyam Mohamed and five former prisoners are claiming damages against the Government for complicity in torture and extraordinary rendition.

But in a victory for the men, Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, the Master of the Rolls, and two other appeal judges unanimously ruled that it was not open to the courts to order the "closed material procedure" in an ordinary civil claim.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What happened to these men was absolutely horrendous; but that they are finally getting their day in court will, hopefully, open the eyes of the British public (and the world) just what "extreme interrogation measures" meant, and unfortunately still means, under the US definition.

What is really sickening is that the US is still using these tactics against prisoners of war, and these tactics are banned under the statues of the Geneva Convention (to which I believe, the US is still, allegedly, a signatory).

Congressional Hypocrites Were Betting Against Stocks As Country Collapsed

Remember all that scorn in Congress about evil shortsellers betting against America and bringing the country down?

Well, it turns out Congress-people did it, too. And they used derivatives to do it, which they now say they abhor.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Remember all the times I said that I could not see any signs the Federal Government wanted to fix the economy? Now we know why Congress signed on with the Goldman Sachs crowd to bet that the country was going to fail, making themselves richer on the misery of the American people

Gulf Coast watches path of oil spill

So far only oil sheens have reached into some coastal waters in the southeastern U.S., and the oil's slow progress despite an uncapped seafloor gusher was allowing crews and volunteers to lay boom in front of shorelines. That effort was stymied by choppy seas into the weekend but the calmer weather should help.

Plunge in state revenue dashes hopes of an easy budget fix

Legislators were hoping revenue would continue to exceed projections, forestalling deeper cuts and further tax hikes. But April's total was 30% below what was expected, leaving them with few options.

The fatal flaw with the use of higher taxes to save the state's financial woes is not understanding when the people have run out of money to pay the taxes with!

More than 80% of school districts to cut jobs

More than 80% of U.S. school districts are expected to eliminate jobs and more than half will likely freeze hiring during the upcoming school year, an education organization said Tuesday.

Based on a survey of school administrators from 49 states, a total of 275,000 education jobs are expected to be cut in 2011, according to the American Association of School Administrators.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, 80% of school districts are cutting jobs... but this country still coughs up 3 billion dollars annually for Israel?!?

What is wrong with this picture?!? EVERYTHING.

NY Bomb suspect lost Conn. home to foreclosure

The suspect in the Times Square bombing attempt defaulted on a $200,000 mortgage on his Connecticut home and the Shelton property is now in foreclosure, according to court records.

The foreclosure records show Faisal Shahzad took out the mortgage on a home in Shelton, Conn., in 2004, and he co-owned the home with a woman named Huma Mian.

Webmaster's Commentary:

While SITE and the US Government are trying to blame Pakistan or Iran or "Al Qaeda" for the failed NY bombing attempt, this is starting to look more like a repeat of the Joe Stack affair, in which a victim of the US economy strikes back.

This isn't politics; this is economics. This isn't terror, it is desperation and revenge.

On that last one, can someone at ABCNNBBCBS please explain why a fizzled bomb in New York is an act of terror, but US drones killing civilians in Pakistan is not?

May 04 08:50

The police say that this is not a “hate crime” because the attackers were not attacking Rabbi Lerner for his religion, but for his politics. That is scant comfort for those of us who continue to believe that America and Israel are best served by the voices willing to publicly share critique, though incidents like this are of course meant to scare people into silence. Tikkun will not be silenced.

The evidence for Khadr's innocence

For six years after Canadian Omar Khadr was captured by the American military, the public heard only one story about the events of July 27, 2002 in Afghanistan.

During a four-hour battle with mujahedeen fighters, American soldier Christopher Speer was killed by a grenade. Khadr, 15, was the only enemy fighter left alive after the battle. He was shot twice in the back and taken prisoner. Shortly after, the U.S. military said Khadr threw the fatal grenade that killed Speer, though there was no eyewitness.

Under the Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. Immigrants who are deported and attempt to re-enter can be imprisoned for 10 years. Visa violators can be sentenced to six-year terms. Mexicans who help illegal immigrants are considered criminals.

The law also says Mexico can deport foreigners who are deemed detrimental to "economic or national interests," violate Mexican law, are not "physically or mentally healthy" or lack the "necessary funds for their sustenance" and for their dependents.

Hacked US Treasury websites serve visitors malware

Websites operated by the US Treasury Department are redirecting visitors to websites that attempt to install malware on their PCs, a security researcher warned on Monday.

The infection buries an invisible iframe in bep.treas.gov, moneyfactory.gov, and bep.gov that invokes malicious scripts from grepad.com, Roger Thompson, chief research officer of AVG Technologies, told The Register. The code was discovered late Sunday night and was active at time of writing, about 12 hours later.

Top Ten Reasons You Should Quit Facebook

After some reflection, I've decided to delete my account on Facebook. I'd like to encourage you to do the same. This is part altruism and part selfish. In any event, here's my "Top Ten" reasons for why you should join me and many others and delete your account.

Regular use of aspirin increases risk of Crohn's disease by five times

Crohn’s disease is a serious condition affecting 60,000 people in the UK and 500,000 people in the US. It is characterized by inflammation and swelling of any part of the digestive system. This can lead to debilitating symptoms and requires patients to take life-long medication. Some patients need surgery and some sufferers have an increased risk of bowel cancer.

Though there are likely to be many causes of the disease, previous work on tissue samples has shown that aspirin can have a harmful effect on the bowel.
