EU ministers propose extra sanctions against Iran: diplomat

EU foreign ministers on Monday proposed new sanctions going further than UN restrictions, in a bid to pressure Iran over its nuclear programme.

The measures, which also cover the oil and gas industry, with transport and banking or insurance curbs, will now go forward to an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday for final approval.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, these EU sanctions are only a prelude to a military confrontation which will almost inevitably follow here.

Iran worked out a deal with Turkey and Brazil for the nuclear material swap; the only problem was that certain nations (read: the US and Israel) summarily rejected it because it was not the deal they wanted.

Israeli Chair of Gaza Flotilla Attack Investigation Doesn’t Believe It Should Exist

Netanyahu’s panel will have no powers, not even those of a government probe, and its proposed chairman does not believe in such a panel. In an interview to Army Radio, Tirkel said there is no choice but to establish a state committee of inquiry. He opposed bringing in foreign observers and made clear that he is not a devotee of drawing conclusions about individuals and dismissing those responsible for failures. When a Haaretz reporter confronted Tirkel about these remarks, the former justice evaded the question saying, “I don’t remember what I said.“

Obama walk in sand is prelude to primetime speech

Speaking to troops at the base, Obama said the country faced an unprecedented environmental disaster and "we're going to continue to meet it with an unprecedented response."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Dear Obama.

You sat in the Oval Office for over a year while the Minerals Management Service surfed internet porn, did drugs, and accepted hookers from the very oil companies they were supposed to keep an eye on. None of this was secret. MMS was a scandal-plagued mess on inauguration day. Yes, much of the problem was inherited from your predecessor, but you won your election with a promise that you were going to change the way the government operated; a promise you have failed to keep.

Harry Truman had a sign on his desk that read, "The Buck Stops Here!" It was never more true than in the present case. Many entities share the blame for this, the greatest environmental disaster in history, one which could have been prevented if you had remembered that your job is to take care of America, not Israel! Every blob of oil that washes ashore represents your failure to do your job for the American people. And all the posturing and bluffing that you will deal with the situation now that the disaster has happened will not conceal the fact that your job was to keep it from happening in the first place by making sure the existing agencies, precautions and regulations were being followed.

Instead, you allowed the MMS to go on playing their sex and drug games, while your administration handed out waivers and exemptions to the rules like they were party favors.

And this disaster is the result.

The Deepwater Horizon is America's Chernobyl.

Bush admin lawyer urges court to toss torture suit

A senior Bush administration lawyer is urging a federal appeals court to dismiss a convicted terrorist's lawsuit over legal memos authorizing harsh interrogation tactics.

John Yoo wrote the memos as a Department of Justice lawyer. His lawyer argued Monday before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that allowing such lawsuits to proceed will open other presidential counsel to dangerous judicial second-guessing during wartime.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yoo's attorney has made a significant error in the way he has presented Yoo's case to the Federal Appeals Court.

When he makes the argument that "...allowing such lawsuits to proceed will open other presidential counsel to dangerous judicial second-guessing during wartime", he has obviously forgotten that there was never a declaration of war by Congress against Afghanistan or Iraq: only Congress can declare war, and that never happened in either case here.

However, it is the institutionalization of torture by the US government which presents a number of fundamental problems for the US.

When the US tortures, this for all practical intents and purposes removes the US from any human rights organization to which it has been a signatory by treaty, including the Geneva accords.

Torture, as we know from the times of the Catholic Inquisition, does not produce the truth; torture ultimately gets the tortured person to say what the torturer wants to hear, but not the truth.

We, as a country and a people, can no longer talk about American values of human rights and human dignity with a straight face, when we torture.

People around the world understand clearly that we practice those values in the breach, not the observance, when we torture.

And when we torture, we can expect hostile countries to do precisely the same to our citizens and soldiers.

This lawsuit should go forward: torture should never be used by Americans as an interrogation tool, nor be allowed to be used by foreign countries to whom we have "outsourced" this procedure in the past.

Israeli flotilla inquiry inadequate, Turkey and others say

Democratic Party Defends Israeli Attack

To rationalize what virtually the entire international legal community recognizes as an act of war, congressional Democrats have engaged in a series of falsifications and radical reinterpretations of international law.

The Free Gaza campaign had made clear that the cargo was exclusively humanitarian. Indeed, all of its previous eight voyages over the past two years were completely free of any weaponry or weapon parts. The plethora of peace and human rights groups participating in the flotilla would have never taken part were there any hint of arms being on board. Most crucially, customs officials rigorously inspected all the ships at their disembarkation points.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What this points out to thinking Americans is that when their politicians get "acquired" by Israel, they stay acquired, even to the detriment of of the welfare and reputation of this country.

Obama’s contempt for international standards

One of the two internationals is David Trimble, former First Minister of Northern Ireland. Are his the eyes that can ensure this commission conducts “a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation”?

On the day of the Israeli assault, the Jerusalem Post reported on the launch of the “Friends of Israel Initiative,” a new project in defense of Israel’s right to exist, led by Spain’s former prime minister Jose Maria Aznar. This group of international leaders includes none other than, David Trimble.

State Dept Wants Own ‘Combat Force’ for Iraq

Tenuous though it may be, the Obama Administration maintains that it still intends to complete the Iraq military pullout by the end of December 2011. Even that won’t be the end of combat operations, however.

Now the US State Department is looking to get into the war fighting business in its own right, saying it needs its own combat force to meet the “extreme security challenges in Iraq.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel Investigates Israel for Murder and Surprise, Israel finds Israel Innocent

The promised Israeli 'investigation' of the savage, brutal and unprovoked Israeli attack against the Gaza Aid Convoy Humanitarians (which the Zionist hasbara agents called "Operation Sea Breeze,") will find Israel innocent of any and all charges. We'll hear sob stories about how heavily armed IOF Goons were forced to defend themselves against 80 yo grannies wielding their dentures and threatening to slit the throats of the IOF Storm Troopers of the 'world's most moral army.'

Yeah, the snake eaters and frogmen have a good thing going now, what with their buddy Petraeus in charge of CENTCOM, and a pushover president, and bureaucratic twit Bob Gates for a SECDEF. U.S. to object to China-Pakistan nuclear reactor deal

The Obama administration has decided to object to a lucrative deal in which state-owned Chinese companies would supply Pakistan with two nuclear reactors, U.S. officials said.

The deal is expected to be discussed next week at a meeting in New Zealand of the 46-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which monitors such transactions. Experts had said it appears to be a violation of international guidelines forbidding nuclear exports to countries that have not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or do not have international safeguards on reactors. Pakistan has not signed the treaty.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And yet, the US turns a completely blind eye to the reality that Israel is a nuclear armed country which refuses to sign the NNPT, or allow its nuclear sites to be inspected!

You've just got to love that hypocracy!

And at this juncture, just what can the US do to "punish" China if it inks this deal?!? Pretty darn close to absolutely nothing.

Egypt in awkward position on Gaza following Israeli attack on aid flotilla

Amid domestic outrage following the flotilla deaths, Egypt announced it was indefinitely opening its crossing with Gaza at Rafah. But of the 8,000 Gazans who tried to cross through Rafah in the past two weeks, 1,500 were turned back. Seven trucks of goods have crossed into Gaza via Rafah, said Ghazi Hamad, the Palestinian coordinator of all crossings into and out of Gaza. In the same period, hundreds have entered from Israel. The only Gazans who can travel via Rafah are those seeking medical care, students and holders of international visas or passports. Hamas leaders are prohibited from leaving via Rafah, and several were denied passage in the past two weeks, Hamad said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The siege should not be "eased", as Tony Blair assured the world after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu: it should be lifted, period, end of discussion.

The New McCarthyism

Once again vast sums of money are being spent on a war, this time a hot one and getting hotter. Once again parties with a vested interest are out to smear and destroy anyone who dares ask if the wars are worth the sacrifice of our young people (not to mention the money), indeed if there really is any point at all to the wars aside from justifying the flow of money to defense contractors.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I was looking in on the comments posted after my letter was published in the Star-Advertiser. Mostly I was checking to see if a follow-up by myself that included links to support the arguments being made was allowed by the moderator (it wasn't). But I could not help but notice that Israel's defenders, the "Megaphonies" had piled into the discussion and unable to come up with substantive arguments to support Israel's right to commit murder in international waters had fallen back on the old standard of screaming "Nazi" and "Anti-Semite."

So I am reposting this story about how "Anti-Semite" is just a repeat of "communist" used to silence critics of government policy in times past and I ask you repost this everywhere you see Israel's minions screaming about Nazis and anti-Semites.

BP ignored warnings on Gulf well: investigators

BP knew its Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico was a "nightmare" in the days leading up to its fatal April 20 blowout, congressional investigators said yesterday, but the company "appears to have made multiple decisions for economic reasons that increased the danger of a catastrophic well failure."

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder if BP execs thought that, having been such a major contributor to the Obama campaign, they could get away with anything, and there would be absolutely no consequences.

As reported in:

"While the BP oil geyser pumps millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama and members of Congress may have to answer for the millions in campaign contributions they've taken from the oil and gas giant over the years.

BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

"During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records."

And remember: this is what we know about, to date.

It's always comforting to know how completely "acquired" US officials and congressional representatives are by corporations which have absolutely no sense of moral responsibility whatsoever.

Marshall Islands, Not U.S., Had Main Responsibility For Blown Oil Well's Safety Inspections

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico was built in South Korea. It was operated by a Swiss company under contract to a British oil firm. Primary responsibility for safety and other inspections rested not with the U.S. government but with the Republic of the Marshall Islands — a tiny, impoverished nation in the Pacific Ocean.

Now, as the government tries to figure out what went wrong in the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history, this international patchwork of divided authority and sometimes conflicting priorities is emerging as a crucial underlying factor in the explosion of the rig.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Current US law allows this kind of corporations to indulge in these kinds of practices with impunity.

These laws should be changed, with inspections done here in the US according to the most rigorous safety standards and practices.

Osama bin Laden: A dead nemesis perpetuated by the US government

Osama bin Laden is dead. The news first came from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the fugitive died in December [2001] and was buried in the mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information. The remnants of Osama's gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to keep Osama's ghost alive or because they have no means of communication.

With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have, remained silent for so long if he were still alive. He always liked to take credit even for things he had nothing to do with. Would he remain silent for nine months and not trumpet his own survival? [New York Times. July 11, 2002]

Webmaster's Commentary:

Relinked because ABCNNBBCBS are waving Osama at us again, which means someone is considering a false flag attack to distract you from the crashing economy, collapsing bridges and coal mines, exploding oil wells, and the government's treasonous defense of a foreign nation that attacked Americans in international waters.

U.S. Financial Aid To Israel: Figures, Facts, and Impact

Since 1992, the U.S. has offered Israel an additional $2 billion annually in loan guarantees. Congressional researchers have disclosed that between 1974 and 1989, $16.4 billion in U.S. military loans were converted to grants and that this was the understanding from the beginning.

Webmaster's Commentary:

BP hires private security contractors to guard ‘black water’

If they had hired Blackwater, the firm would have had a particularly appropriate sounding name for the job: guarding tar-stained beaches.

In their latest eyebrow-raising PR move, multinational oil giant BP has enlisted private security contractors to keep onlookers away from oil cleanup sites. While the firm they hired apparently isn't Blackwater (the private security firm Blackwater changed their name to Xe Services after a spate of killings in Baghdad, and has now put itself up for sale), they certainly seem to have 'black water' in their sights.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If BP has gone to these extraordinary lengths to keep people away from the cleanup sites, this catastrophe is far worse than either BP or the Federal government is willing to divulge.

On the demonization of Saddam Hussein and Manuel Noriega

An excerpt from the recently published book The Mother of All Battles: The Endless U.S.-Iraq War by Malcom Lagauche:

In December 2003, we all saw the photos of a disheveled Saddam Hussein after he was pulled out of a “spider hole” in a town near Tikrit. The administration laughed and the U.S. public made jokes about him and his hiding place.

The room was dirty. There was an empty can of Spam. The story was that he was holed up there and was totally irrelevant to Iraq. His day was done and he was now in the hands of Iraq’s liberators. What you saw wasn’t real. Nothing of this scenario was true.

Just how egregious are some of the findings made by the OIG? Let’s navigate and review the report from POGO highlighting 18 separate instances in which the OIG recommended disciplinary action and in which ‘no action’ was taken. I found the following six to be the most outrageous. The OIG’s findings include (I recommend you take a deep breath first!!):

4. Misuse of government computer resources to assist Ponzi scheme and violations of standards of ethical conduct. (Are you kidding me? This is not a major front page story? A Supervisor in the SEC’s Office of Administrative Services is found by the OIG to have engaged in these behaviors and is allowed to retire without disciplinary action being taken?? What a joke!!)

Dual Loyalty Revisited

April 28, 2010 by Jeff Gates

Four-fifths of the U.S. House and Senate recently declared in correspondence to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the U.S. must reaffirm its “unbreakable bond” with Israel. What persuaded our Congress to proclaim their loyalty to Israel while our military is waging war in the Middle East based on fabricated intelligence?

Any sober assessment of this bond must concede a need to reappraise its cost in blood and treasure. Yet the Congress—our Congress—opposed that reassessment even as our commander-in-chief seeks to end a brutal Israeli occupation of Palestine that has provoked worldwide outrage for more than six decades.

"We cannot wait. We have to be prepared," says Dan Robey, whose website KeysSpill.com has gathered 4,000 volunteers, including 300 boat captains, who have offered to help before and after any potential arrival of oil. As Patrick Rice, dean of marine science and technology at Florida Keys Community College, puts it, "We will not allow the inept responses that have been happening up north to happen here."

Church Makes Girl Apologize for Being Raped

Like many victims of rape, she felt shame and was afraid she would be blamed. After she realized she was pregnant, she told her rapist, Ernest Willis. Willis offered to drive her out of state for an abortion or to punch her in the stomach to force a miscarriage. At that point, Tina thought she should tell her mother, who advised her to tell her Pastor, Chuck Phelps.

It turns out, Tina was right. She was blamed. Phelps reacted by telling her to go before the congregation and apologize for her sins. He said that while Willis might have been 99% responsible, Tina needed to be punished by admitting to her 1%.

"He told me that I should be happy that I didn't live in Old Testament times because I would have been stoned."

BUSTED! I didn’t believe they would be that stupid. You could see the cursor moving in the picture. I saw a man handed a metal bar. Then he walked through, just like a ghost, a solid steel protrusion from the deck, the size of an ashcan. This thing would have stopped a truck but the Fox News “fighters” on the Mavi Marmara were like ghosts. In fact, the “steel bar thugs” were exactly that, or more appropriately, cartoons.

61% Underfunded Illinois Teachers Pension Fund Goes For Broke, Becomes Next AIG-In-Waiting By Selling Billions In CDS

"TRS is largely on the risky side of the contracts, selling and writing OTC derivatives, including credit default swaps, insurance-like contracts that guarantee payment in the event of a default, that were blamed in part for the 2008 collapse of Lehman Bros. and bailout of insurance giant American International Group Inc., or AIG." Demonstrating just how far the fund is willing to go in the "for broke" category, knowing full well that if it repeats AIG's implosion, the government will likely bail it out, is the disclosure that a stunning 81.5% of the fund's investments are considered risky - this means it is the fourth-riskiest investment portfolio for a pension fund in the U.S!

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would disagree with the writer on one issue, which is we have just blown by socialism on the way to a fascist economic system, where profits are privatized, and losses are born by the public.

One has to wonder just how many other teacher's retirement programs are in this kind of mess right now.

One has to wonder; with a US government deficit running at 13 trillion dollars, how is the US going to bail out either this fund, or any similar fund experiencing this kind of risk.

Moody's Latest To Downgrade Greek Debt To Junk

Moody's Investors Service slashed Greece's credit rating to junk status on Monday in a new blow to the debt-ridden country that is under intense international scrutiny after narrowly avoiding default last month.

A Moody's statement said it was cutting Greece's government bond ratings by four notches to Ba1 from A3, with a stable outlook for the next 12-18 months. It was the second of the three major agencies to accord Greek bonds junk status. Standard & Poor's did the same in late April.

The downgrades reflect concern that the country could fail to meet its obligations to cut its deficit and pay down its debt - which the Greek government says is out of the question.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US government may well find itself in the same situation in the not too distant future, looking at the current ballooning deficit.

Discovery’ of Afghan riches a pro-war PR scam?

The ‘discovery’ of Afghanistan’s minerals will sound pretty silly to old timers,” a "retired former senior US official" tells Politico's Laura Rosen. “When I was living in Kabul in the early 1970’s the [US government], the Russians, the World Bank, the UN and others were all highly focused on the wide range of Afghan mineral deposits. Cheap ways of moving the ore to ocean ports has always been the limiting factor.”

So why is this news now? To many, the story's timing suggests a Pentagon public relations campaign designed to extend public support for the war with the hope that, in time, Afghanistan may be able to raise itself out of abject poverty.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This smells like a campaign to try to give the US public a reason to believe that prolonging this war has any kind of an upside for the US, which it does not.

At the end of the day, the money will be going to private corporations with Afghans seeing precious little of it, while more of our troops come home maimed for life, or in body bags, for perhaps years to come.

California GOP Senate candidates show support for Israel in flotilla incident

The Republican U.S. Senate race focused Sunday on relations with Israel, with both Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina defending the actions of Israeli troops who killed nine people after boarding a Turkish ship carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

DeVore fired up several hundred pro-Israel demonstrators Sunday afternoon who gathered on Wilshire Boulevard in front of the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger also spoke.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No government can serve two masters, and a government that serves Israel cannot serve the American people. A friend to Israel is no friend of America.

Memorize this list of Israel's whores in the US Government and vote them out of office before it is your children being murdered by Israel! There is no more important issue this election!

America needs leaders who will put America first, second, and third.

Oil Leak in Red Butte Area in Utah

Chevron says a leak that sent thousands of gallons of oil into Red Butte Creek over the weekend came from a hole in a pipeline that was caused by an electrical arc. At a mid-morning news conference Monday, Chevron refinery manager Mark Sullivan said crews dug up the pipeline Sunday night and discovered the hole in it was the size of a quarter.

Russia peers into Kyrgyz void

This is an internal conflict, and Russia does not see the conditions for participation in its settlement," a Kremlin spokesperson told reporters in Moscow on Saturday. Russia was providing emergency humanitarian support, she said.

However, she made a hugely significant revelation: "In his capacity as chairman of the Collective Security Treaty Organization [CSTO] council, [Russian President Dmitry] Medvedev has ordered consultations to be held among secretaries of the member states on Monday to work out a collective response." (The members are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.)

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a very measured, "adult in the room" stance from Medvedev, in behalf of both Russia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

Why is Obama refusing to waive the Jones Act? He's aiding in the destruction of the Gulf

Obama has refused to waive the Jones Act. His Administration keeps putting the blame on the Coast Guard who puts the blame on others for not requesting the Jones Act be waived. Yet a simple Executive Order signed by Obama could waive the Jones Act in about 3 minutes, less time than it takes Obama to set up a tee on the golf course. The Gulf is in dire need of all the help it can get. When foreign entities with better expertise and equipment in oil spills offer to help, why is Obama refusing? While Obama dithers in his bad leadership of the Oil Spill, the Gulf Coast dies more and more each day.

Webmaster's Commentary:

My sense is that the Obama administration doesn't want foreign companies to actually assess the full extent of the damage to the Gulf Coast, and go public with that knowledge, because the damage is far worse than either the Administration, or BP, wants the American public to know.

No plan to escort Gaza-bound Ships: Commander
Tehran Times Political Desk
TEHRAN - The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has no plan to escort humanitarian aid ships to Gaza, IRGC Deputy Commander Hossein Salami said on Monday.
On June 6th an official in the IRGC Navy announced that the IRGC Navy was totally prepared to escort Gaza-bound humanitarian aid ships to protect them against possible Israeli attacks.
Elsewhere, Salami added the IRGC is not concerned about the latest sanctions slapped against Iran as the country has experienced various kinds of sanctions since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Obama to Gulf Coast Residents: Normal Will Return

President Barack Obama is promising Gulf Coast residents that the region will be left in better shape than it was before the massive BP oil spill that fouled the waters and threatened their way of life.

On a visit to the Alabama coast Monday, Obama said his administration will do everything it can, working all day every day, to make sure that coastal communities now suffering economically get back on their feet.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is time to invoke the 25th Amendment because this man has gone totally insane.

First, one look at Prince William Sound, site of the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989, shows that "normal" never came back. Of course, what Obama may really be saying is, "Get used to it, because this is the NEW normal!"

Second, all the posturing about what Obama will do in the future, including his renewed push for a carbon tax and "mandated lifestyle behavior" is a smoke screen to conceal the fact that the US Government allowed this disaster to happen. Obama is tal,ing about new agencies and new procedures but the fact is that there were already agencies (the MMS) and procedures (drilling mud before capping, acoustic cutoffs, etc.) in place that did not work because they were allowed to be bypassed. Any new agencies and procedures put into place will also be bypassed in the name of profit if we first do not replace the government that taxes the people to add lifeboats to the Titanic, then leaves half of them on the dock at sailing time. Obama's posturing is an attempt to transfer the responsibility for this mess from himself and the corporations onto the general population, which is perfectly in accord with the theory of fascist economics.

The U.S. wins the right to abduct innocent people with impunity

The Supreme Court today denied a petition of review from Maher Arar, the Canadian and Syrian citizen who was abducted by the U.S. Government at a stopover at JFK Airport when returning to Canada in 2002, held incommunicado for two weeks, and then rendered to Syria, where he spent the next 10 months being tortured, even though — as everyone acknowledges — he was guilty of absolutely nothing. Arar sued the U.S. Government for what was done to him, and last November, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal of his lawsuit on the ground that courts have no right to interfere in these decisions of the Executive Branch. That was the decision which the U.S. Supreme Court let stand today, ending Arar’s attempt to be compensated for what was done to him.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Actually, the reason we HAVE a US Supreme Court is to serve as a check and balance on both the executive and legislative branches and in point of fact the US Supreme Court has intervened on the decisions of the executive branch, case in point when the US Supreme Court blocked Harry Truman's nationalization of the Steel Industry to forestall a strike.

In Marbury v. Madison, the US Supreme Court affirmed the Constitution as the supreme law of the land leading Chief Justice John Marshall to establish the power of judicial review: the power of the Court not only to interpret the constitutionality of a law or statute but also to carry out the process and enforce its decision. Inasmuch as the President is the President only so long as he enforces United States law, review of his decisions is the proper purview of the United States Supreme Court.

Don't boycott Israel, you cultural terrorist

Boycotting Israel, politically, economically, culturally and intellectually has been a means of resistance for years, albeit with ebbs and tides in terms of its effectiveness. Palestinians boycotted Israeli products during the first Intifada in the last 1980s and the early 90s and international groups have been intellectually and culturally boycotting Israel for years, something which took on particular force after the creation of the Boycott and Divestment and Sanctions movement, which went global in 2005. Naturally, Israel was far from happy about those who dared to challenge Israel's image of democracy and freedom.

The Case for an Impartial Turkish Inquiry

By now, anyone paying attention understands the broad outlines of Israel's notion of what constitutes an 'impartial' inquiry into the murder of nine activists on the Free Gaza Flotilla. Except for Netanyahu and the cabinet ministers who ordered the armed assault on the humanitarian convoy, no other witnesses will be called. The Israelis now say their inquiry will not even take testimony from the IDF commanders who planned and executed the assault or the seven hundred first hand witnesses who survived the carnage. Besides, the activists have already been deported.

Gaza: 95% of factories are closed, 93% of water is polluted

Most of Gaza's factories have closed and its water is polluted as a result of Israel's siege policy, according to a new report being released today by the Israeli Human Rights group – B'tselem.

The siege policy has "led to economic collapse in Gaza," B'tselem noted in a 44-page report (PDF) that looked at Gaza, the West Bank and east Jerusalem during the period from January 2009 to the end of April 2010.
