Women prepare for Gaza sail: We won't fight Israel

One of hundreds of female volunteers planning to sail to Hamas-ruled territory with diapers, milk, medical supplies and clothes says, 'Our only weapons are faith in the Virgin Mary and in humanity'

"Be sure we will never give Israel such a gift as to fight them or to have Hezbollah with us or to have any political party with us,' the spokeswoman for the organizers of an aid flotilla from Lebanon to Gaza told The Times in an interview published Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, we may well expect this unarmed humanitarian flotilla to Gaza to be sunk by the Israeli Navy, as the "justification" to go to war with Lebanon again.

And why?

As reported today at:

"Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Friday that his country plans to approve an oil law, which would maintain Lebanon's gas rights in the Mediterranean. He was speaking in response to remarks made by Israel's National Infrastructure Minister, who threatened to use force to defend the offshore gas reserves."

"According to Berri, the gas reserves found in drillings off Israel's coast are located within Lebanon's territorial waters as well."

"Israel is ignoring the fact that, according to the maps, this field is included within Lebanon's territorial waters," he said.

So Israel is not only after Lebanon's Litani River, because it's desperate for the water; it is also after Lebanon's offshore gas reserves.

Losing It at the Airport Checkpoint

If you are planning to fly over the 4th of July holiday, be aware of your rights at airport security checkpoints.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has mandated that passengers can opt out of going through a whole body scanning machine in favor of a physical pat down. Unfortunately, opting for the pat down requires passengers to be assertive since TSA screeners do not tell travelers about their right to refuse a scan. Harried passengers must spot the TSA signs posted at hectic security checkpoints to inform themselves of their rights before they move to a body scanning security line.

How many Americans are targeted for assassination?

Nobody -- or at least not me -- disputes the right of the U.S. or any other country to kill someone on an actual battlefield during war without due process. That's just obvious, but that's not remotely what Brennan is talking about, and it's not remotely what this assassination program is about. Indeed, Brennan explicitly identified two indistinguishable groups of American citizens who "will face the full brunt of a U.S. response": (1) those "on the battlefield in Afghanistan or Iraq"; and (2) those "in a Yemen or in a Pakistan or in Somalia or another place." In other words, the entire world is a "battlefield" -- countries where there is a war and countries where there isn't -- and the President's "battlefield" powers, which are unlimited, extend everywhere.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Extrajudicial assassination has apparently been institutionalized by the US government, even against its own citizens.

The employment of extrajudicial assassination as a US domestic policy means that the whole notion of "due process" in this country has just been thrown under the proverbial bus.

Kyrgyzstan: Picking Up the Pieces

Kyrgyzstan joined the rank of failed states this month: its central government lacks legitimacy and depends heavily on external aid, with the US base looming large, while the people are largely destitute, harassed by local thugs and drug barons, and looking to Moscow for a way out.

The issues at stake are the referendum next Sunday to legitimise the interim government, and the drug trade, which Bakiyev’s clan still controls and is loathe to give up. Heroin comes from Afghanistan via Tajikistan and is repackaged in Osh before being transported west to Uzbekistan and north to Kazakhstan and Russia, according to the UN. The killing two weeks ago of Aibek Mirsidikov, one of the drug kingpins in the area, threatened the Bakiyev clan’s control. The rest is history.

Gas War: Israel Threatens to Use Force; Lebanon to Respond

A new kind of war seems to loom in the horizon: the gas war.

While the war of freedom flotillas remains at the top of the headlines as the Israeli enemy is seeking to prevent Lebanese flotillas seeking to break the inhumane siege of Gaza of setting sail, the gas war seems to be, without doubt, the "upcoming war" in the region.

U.S. State Department pays Blackwater company thugs millions in Afghanistan while Afghan teachers starve

This contract is disappointing news for people who hoped that the U.S. administration and Pentagon were serious about supporting Afghan society’s great needs beyond wildly expensive military actions. Billions flow to American war profiteers—both over-paid State employees and civilian contractors— and a woefully inadequate amount goes for Afghan healthcare, utilities, education, transportation, and judicial system.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US and NATO invasion and occupation has never been about bettering the lives of Afghan citizens; it has always been about the potential for private profit from drugs, oil, and minerals.

Former Oil Worker Says Cleanup Just For Show

Former oil clean-up worker Candi Warren says she signed up to make a difference, but soon found out the work of cleaning the beaches was all cosmetic. That's what she was told, she says.

Warren says she knew that when crews worked during the day, the tide and surf buried oil overnight. But they were forbidden to dig it up. She quit in disgust three weeks ago despite the $18 per hour pay.

She said she was told to only clean the surface of the sand, that this is all cosmetic. She was on a crew at Gulf State Park where tourists go. She says it has priority so as to make it look like the beaches are clean.

Is Petraeus McChrystal’s Replacement or Obama’s

Don’t get me wrong. McChrystal is a militarist, and I am pleased to see him gone.

However, McChrystal didn’t restart America’s aggression against Afghanistan. The Obama moron did.

People elected Obama, because they were tired of Bush’s wars based on lies. So Obama gave us a new war in Pakistan and reignited the Afghan war. No one knows what these wars are about or why the bankrupt US government is wasting vast sums of money, which it has to borrow from foreigners, in order to murder the citizenry in two countries that have never done anything to us.

Blockade ‘eased’ as Gaza starves more slowly

This “adjustment”, as the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed it, is aimed solely at damage limitation. With Israel responsible for killing nine civilians aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla three weeks ago, the world has finally begun to wonder what purpose the siege serves. Did those nine really need to die to stop coriander, chocolate and children’s toys from reaching Gaza? And, as Israel awaits other flotillas, will more need to be executed to enforce the policy?

Webmaster's Commentary:

The flotillas must continue to Gaza until the siege is broken, period, end of discussion.

Tehran declares State of Alert on its Western Border: Iran-US-Israel Drama goes into Act II

Iran has declared a state of alert on June 22, on its northwestern borders alleging that US and Israeli forces have concentrated in Azerbaijan ready to strike at Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iranian sources claim that Israel has secretly transferred a large number of bomber jets to bases in Azerbaijan, via Georgia, and that American Special Forces are also concentrated in Azerbaijan in preparation for a strike.

US sources indicated that senior Al Qaeda operatives such as Saif al-Adel, living in Iran had been allowed to leave the country through Syria to orchestrate terrorist attacks on American targets. These reports seem aimed at further tarnishing the Iranian regime and portraying it as a supporter of international terrorism.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder about this alleged "state of Alert" the Iranian government has put into place.

There is absolutely no mention of it in the semi-official Iranian FARS website in English, nor is it mentioned in any of the Azerbaijan English web outlets I could find.

But one thing is certain: the drumbeats for this war are beating more loudly and viciously and quickly than they have been at any time in the last year.

The Obama administration currently finds itself in mess after mess after mess, with both their domestic and foreign policies, and desperately needs a truly dramatic distraction away from the messes they have created, and been unable to fix.

The Israeli government has been very impatient about getting this war started, and from their perspective, the sooner, the better.

When Netanyahu arrives in Washington on 6 July, I would almost be willing to bet that the final details of such a strike on Iran will be finalized.

US-South Korea Military Drills: China seriously concerned over U.S. aircraft carrier reports: FM spokesman

The United States and the ROK reportedly decided to hold a military drill and the U.S. side was considering sending an aircraft carrier to join the exercise in the Yellow Sea off the ROK's western coast, according to media reports.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported today at:

"North Korea declared a sailing ban in an area off its western coast, prompting South Korea to be on watch for possible military moves by the communist nation, a South Korean military official said.

South Korea hasn’t detected any abnormal military activities in North Korea and is closely monitoring the area, said an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul, without giving further details. He declined to be named when reached by telephone today, citing regulations."

The ban is set to expire this Sunday, 27 June, but a US/ROK joint military exercise so shortly on the heels of this ban is not going to to anything toward calming tensions here.

Militarism and Democracy: the Implications of the McChrystal Affair

What such commentaries begin to reveal is the emergence in the United States of a distinct military caste, virulently hostile to democracy, civilian control and any form of popular opposition to American imperialism.

The firing of McChrystal and his replacement by Petraeus represents, not a blow against this trend, but the means by which Obama and the Democratic Party adapt themselves to the demands of the military brass. McChrystal’s only crime—his “error in judgment”, in Obama’s parlance—was to express in too blunt and unguarded a fashion the sentiments of broad sections of the US officer corps.

Knoxville-based amputee group questions TSA

The Knoxville-based Amputee Coalition of America says amputees are being mistreated at airport security checkpoints across the nation.

One example, they say, is Peggy Chenoweth, of Gainesville, Virginia, who lost her left leg below the knee in 2003 after an accident.

"I always make sure that I wear shorts so then it's visible. They took me to the little Plexiglas waiting area which I'm very accustomed to. My son came through security, came over and sat right next to me and took my hand. He was immediately yelled at," Chenoweth said. "He started to cry. I wasn't allowed to comfort him. I wasn't allowed to give him a hug because I hadn't been cleared."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unflipping believable.

TSA is not about increasing security at our airports; it's about having American citizens who fly absolutely cowed and compliant with complete governmental authority over their lives.

War bill could clear next week

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Thursday said she would try to pass the Afghanistan war spending bill before the July recess, a piece of legislation that may be split into two to ease passage.

“The president is the commander in chief, and we all stand by him in the decision that he made in terms of who would be in command in Afghanistan,” she said. “So we’ve trusted him before, we trust him now; its just a question of where people stand on our involvement in Afghanistan.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

The warmongers in Congress will undoubtedly pass this funding bill.

Demonstrating himself to be the antithesis of the "change" upon which he campaigned so adroitly, President Obama has absolutely become the US's Warmonger-in-Chief.

Thinking Americans understand that this alleged "war on terror" is, at the end of the day, a war on people cursed to live over resources, or access to those resources, that the US government deems as theirs.

Korean War Turns 60

The war could have ended earlier this year, in fact, as North Korea openly offered a formal peace treaty ending the war. The US State Department angrily rejected the offer, saying it would never allow normal relations with North Korea unless they abandon all nuclear technology and make dramatic changes on human rights. And so the war continues, three fifths of a century later.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, the US has given North Korea and the world a brilliant object lesson as to what happens to any country which absolutely does not have a nuclear deterrent with the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Likud committee votes in favor of resuming settlement construction

Netanyahu did not participate in the Likud Central Committee meeting, where right-leaning sections of the party called for a vote on a proposal to bolster settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Webmaster's Commentary:

You've got to love the timing on this; the vote happens barely two weeks before Netanyahu is scheduled to meet Obama on 6 July at the White House.

But hey, Obama was never going to really do anything regarding the settlement issue anyway.

In Obama's eyes, Israel can always do precisely what it wants in the region, and the US government will enable it, including the hijacking of American-flagged vessels, and the assassination of American citizens on the high seas.

Oh, and that other little issue Israel wants the US to take care of for it, which Obama will unquestioningly greenlight for Netanyahu on the 6th?

That will be the "neutralizing" of Iran, an alleged "existential enemy" of Israel, by way of a war which is apt to go regional, and perhaps global.

And I'm sure that Obama is just fine with this, reassuring his Israeli colleague that it will be American kids who will do the fighting, getting maimed for life, and dying to accomplish this Israeli agenda.

McChrystal’s Ouster May Embolden Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts

Afghan officials say that General Parvez Kayani has personally offered to broker a deal between Karzai and the Taliban’s leadership, the Quetta Shura, while Pakistani intelligence officials underscore the growing belief that the US military cannot win in Afghanistan.

US officials are expressing concerns about this, saying it “creates a bigger breach between us and Karzai,” but this sort of double-dealing is nothing new in the politics of the region, and with the US openly losing faith in Karzai it is perhaps only natural that he is warming up to other potential backers: it is quite obvious he would not survive in his position long without somebody propping him up.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder, with the war going so catastrophically badly, and Karzai realizing he's in a grand fight for his political life, if the US isn't planning some kind of gung-ho, "isn't war grand!" replacement of Karzai in the not to distant future.

Hamid, if I were you, I would keep that Kevlar body suit handy at all times right now.

Such a rapprochement between the Taliban and the Karzai government is absolutely the last thing the US and NATO want to see right now, because the Taliban wants the US and NATO forces out of Afghanistan immediately.

In light of the fact that a military "victory" in Afghanistan is impossible, the US and NATO should declare victory, bring the troops home, and negotiate with whatever government is still standing for the oil pipeline rights with which to control Eurasian oil.

Of course, that would be logical.

Petraeus Expected to Tone Down Attempts to Avoid Civilian Deaths

Gen. Petraeus is going to review the policy Gen. McChrystal called “courageous restraint,” a euphemism for a collection of orders deigned to reduce the number of civilians killed by US soldiers.

But Gen. Petraeus’ “review” of the policies is nothing resembling an effort to make the restraint more effective. Rather, officials say he is looking to remove some of those restrictions, how many remains to be seen. In effect, he will making policy changes explicitly to put more Afghan civilians’ lives in jeopardy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The more civilians the US and NATO butcher in this war, the more those who are left standing will embrace the Taliban insurgency.

Almost 9 years in, the US and NATO have managed, brilliantly, to do the almost unimaginable; taken a broken, dysfunctional tribal country, saddled it with a corrupt puppet government, and made things even worse for the country's people than they ever were before the invasion and occupation.

Israel To Expel Hamas Politicians From Jerusalem, Could Set Off New Crisis

f Israel goes through with the expulsions, it will almost certainly complicate U.S. attempts to restart direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. For now, a U.S. envoy is shuttling between the two sides, but Abbas insists he won't resume direct talks until Israel freezes all settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories it captured in the 1967 Mideast War.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that these men themselves are not accused of any violence. They were simply captured and held in prison for being in "the wrong party" when an overwhelming number of Palestinians voted in Hamas as their leadership, rather than Fatah.

What we are seeing here is the beginning of a brisk Israeli annexation of Jerusalem and the West Bank, most probably followed by forcible expulsions of Palestinians, perhaps reducing their status to stateless refugees who cannot be absorbed by neighboring countries.

And notice this happens about one and half weeks before Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Obama at the White House on 6 July!

He said the French official had been reached to know the pharmacist Egyptian peace Muhammad Dahlan in 2003 poison compound, which killed Arafat.

US economic growth in the first quarter was revised downward for the second time to 2.7 percent, weaker than previously estimated, the government said Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Once they are collected, the figures for US 2nd quarter economic growth are probably not going to be much better than that.

Congressman Rohrabacher: Almost All House Republicans Think Iraq War Illegal, Immoral

Judge Andrew Napolitano’s new Saturday show on the Fox Business Network is set to send shock waves through the political establishment this weekend when his guest – Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher – reveals that almost all House Republicans now believe that the invasion of Iraq was not only a mistake, but also illegal and immoral.

US to build troop training centre in Tajikistan: envoy

The United States plans to build a facility for training local troops in the ex-Soviet Central Asian state of Tajikistan, the US ambassador said here Friday.

"The plan... is almost 10 million dollars to build this national training centre for the Tajik armed forces," Ken Gross told journalists at a briefing in the capital, Dushanbe.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Is Petraeus McChrystal’s Replacement or Obama’s

Petraeus is an evolved form of general. He “won” in Iraq by paying protection money to the Sunnis who were effectively resisting the US occupation. Petraeus figured out that it was far cheaper and more efficient to put the Sunnis on the US military payroll and to pay them to stop fighting, which is how the war between the Sunnis and the Americans ended. To keep the Americans out of the ongoing large scale sectarian violence that continues to slaughter Iraqis, the US military was confined to remote bases.

If history is a guide, the Afghans will also accept Petraeus’ protection money, and Petraeus has just enough time to buy the Afghan war before the next presidential election.

The Afghans will, of course, take the money and wait us out, just as the Iraqis are doing.

‘Mossad hit men targeted Erdogan’

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
The Israeli intelligence agency Mossad has failed in an attempt to assassinate Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a Jordanian weekly says.

Informed sources in Turkey say that the Mossad plot has been foiled by the country’s security forces, al-Manar quoted a report in the most recent edition of the Al-Majd weekly as saying.

There are also reports that Israel has been trying to incite violence inside Turkey by lending support to the militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Tasmania’s Devil of a Weather Station

The point here is, it seems no matter where I go in the world, I seem to find siting issues with official weather stations used for climate monitoring. Stations that are long period records of historical importance suffer the most from such siting issues, because their record is valuable. Worse, when the data is adjusted, it seems to add to the warming.

Methane in Gulf "astonishingly high": U.S. scientist

As much as 1 million times the normal level of methane gas has been found in some regions near the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, enough to potentially deplete oxygen and create a dead zone, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.

We all live in an oil slick now

Extracting oil from the ground has always been disastrous for the people who live nearby. The only thing that is unusual about this morphing of "Drill, Baby, Drill" into "Spill, Baby, Spill" is that, this time, the world noticed the victims. To pluck one random example, in Ecuador the petrol companies have to pump water into the Amazonian oil fields in order to extract it. This leaves behind a toxic soup of mercury, benzene and chromium 6. For decades, it was simply pumped into the local rivers – causing an epidemic of cancers and severely deformed babies. A US court calculated that the unpaid liabilities for destroying so many lives could total more than $27bn. Who has heard of it?

Concerns Grow Over Long-Term Health Effects of Oil Spill

More than two months after the April 20 BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, experts are still trying to determine what the health effects will be on the workers who are struggling to clean up the biggest oil spill in American history.

There are concerns that some workers could suffer lung, kidney and liver damage from exposure to the volatile organic compounds found in the oil.

Stalin Statue Removed from Gori

In an unannounced move, after midnight on June 25, the authorities removed the bronze statue of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin from the central square of his hometown of Gori.

It was reported that a local TV station's crew was physically assaulted by the police when they tried to film the process.

Saakashvili does it again - "his" people in Gori (Stalin's birthplace) are immensely proud of their statue. They will be furious about this. I hope they get it back before it gets smashed up.

Today the Israeli news service sent out an email broadcast, 87 US Senators affirmed unquestioning support for Israel in the wake of worldwide condemnation for Israeli actions against the Freedom Flotilla. In Australia, Prime Minister Rudd, after strongly admonishing Israel for counterfeiting Australian passports for use in political assassinations was removed from office, victim of a relentless media campaign orchestrated from Tel Aviv. How does this tell us we no longer live in democracies, the US, Australia, Britain, Germany and Canada?

Turkey is the Key

Bombs go off in Turkey, a great spree of terrorist bombings and attacks. Practically every day Turkish soldiers and civilians are being killed. The killings are done ostensibly by the Kurd terrorists of PPK, but this is a new step in Israel’s warfare against Turkish independence. Encouraged by Israel, PKK extended its operations to the Aegean and the Black Sea resorts all the way to Izmir.

"BP's Other Toxic Legacy: 'Decades of Misery' for Gulf Health"
by Marty Beckerman
...As a cleanup worker in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez disaster, Savage says she breathed crude- and dispersant-laced mist for weeks. (This photograph speaks for itself.) She was healthy for age fifty — she looked healthy — but soon experienced crippling health problems that have lasted for two decades: coughing spells, violent diarrhea, pneumonia, obstructed blood vessels. Her liver cirrhosis onset baffled doctors. "We were all coughing and vomiting for months," says Savage, who had no prior history of drinking or smoking and did not wear a respirator during the cleanup. "We thought it was the flu. Exxon told us crude oil was non-toxic and we believed them."

Reduced overtime stymies Border Patrol

he U.S. Border Patrol has quietly reduced its current force of available agents along the U.S.-Mexico border by cutting the overtime hours they can work even as the Obama administration is asking Congress for hundreds of millions of dollars to hire 1,000 new agents, and Congress and the public are clamoring for beefed-up border security.

Several rank-and-file and senior agents told The Washington Times that a new overtime directive issued at the agency's Washington headquarters will limit their ability to get their jobs done, reduce coverage during peak smuggling periods and allow more criminals to avoid apprehension.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This makes absolutely no sense if the Federal government really wants to cut crime and illegal immigration.

Of course, those large corporations which donate overtly and covertly to US politicians on both sides of the isle love how cheap, illegal labor cuts their costs.

Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff finds job at kosher pizzeria in Baltimore

In 2006, Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials in a deal that required him to cooperate with investigators probing his relationships with members of Congress. The investigation into Abramoff led to the conviction of a congressman.

> In an interview published in Le Monde on 28 February 1968, Israeli Chief of Staff Rabin said: “I do not believe that Nasser wanted war. The two divisions which he sent into Sinai on 14 May would not have been enough to unleash an offensive against Israel. He knew it and we knew it.”

> On 14 April 1971, a report in the Israeli newspaper Al-Hamishmar contained the following statement by Mordecai Bentov, a member of the wartime national government. “The entire story of the danger of extermination was invented in every detail and exaggerated a posteriori to justify the annexation of new Arab territory.”

Right-wing self-delusion

National Review‘s Jay Nordlinger cites a truly repellent (and false) comment made this week by Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak to Defense Secretary Robert Gates: “A million and a half people are living in Gaza, but only one of them is really in need of humanitarian aid,” Barak said. Nordlinger points out that Barak was referring to Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, held hostage for years by Hamas, which refuses to permit the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) access to him.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Israel were all that worried about Shalit, then why did they bomb the crap out of Gaza during CAST LEAD, possibly killing him?

Netanyahu Issues Conflicting Statements on Gaza, UN Skeptical

According to a press release Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued in English, a decision was made Thursday to ease the blockade. "It was agreed to liberalize the system by which civilian goods enter Gaza [and] expand the inflow of materials for civilian projects that are under international supervision," the English statement said.

In the "translation" of the same statement in Hebrew, however, there is no such decision or agreement mentioned. And according to Israeli journalist Barak Ravid of the Haaretz daily, while the discussions spanned a total of six hours extended over two days, no decision was ever actually made.

Israelis Keep the Trigger Tight

While it is just another statistic for the Israelis, another Palestinian family has been torn apart. U.S. citizens, 17-year-old Hannah, 15-year-old Mirage and seven-year-old Yasmin are now fatherless. Former Texan Moira, nee Reynolds, who left the U.S. 17 years ago to start a new life with her husband in Jerusalem, has lost her soul mate.

Two weeks ago 41-year-old Ziad Julani from East Jerusalem was shot a number of times at close range in the head and abdomen by Israeli special forces as he lay wounded on his stomach on the ground. An ambulance took the critically injured man to hospital but he died shortly afterwards.

Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon: Righting a Perpetual Wrong

Finally, a parliamentary debate in Lebanon over the human rights of Palestinian refugees. What is unfortunate though, is that granting basic civil rights to over 400,000 Palestinians - 62 years after their expulsion from their historic homeland and the issuing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – has been a topic of ‘debate’ in the first place. Equally regrettable is the fact that various ‘Christian’ Lebanese political forces are fiercely opposing granting Palestinians their rights.

Senate Republicans Poised to Kill Jobless Aid Measure

Republicans in the Senate appear likely to kill legislation to provide continued unemployment checks to millions of people and provide states with billions of dollars to avert layoffs.
