The Bernanke Conundrum

A Republican won in Massachusetts — and suddenly it’s not clear whether the Senate will confirm Ben Bernanke for a second term as Federal Reserve chairman. That’s not as strange as it sounds: Washington has suddenly noticed public rage over economic policies that bailed out big banks but failed to create jobs. And Mr. Bernanke has become a symbol of those policies.

Hugo Chavez Did Not Accuse the U.S. of Causing the Haitian Earthquake

Within the actual story, ABC noted that the information came from an obscure opinion post on the website of a Venezuelan state television channel, VIVE Television. The post referenced a supposed Russian military report on American seismic weapons.

All quotes subsequently attributed to Chavez regarding Haiti and earthquake weapons were in fact direct quotes from this web posting -- none of which was ever uttered by Chavez.

U.S. Heading for Hyperinflationary Collapse, Ruling Elite Preparing for Civil War

Americans have a choice. They can allow their government to bully and threaten them into conforming to their view of reality like Winston Smith or they can go down swinging like Cool Hand Luke and Randall McMurphy. The cowboy spirit of the Old West is what is required today. We need tough hardened individualists who are willing to say enough is enough. Our government has been corrupted by weak men slithering around the halls of Congress soliciting for money, an evil banking cartel creating fiat money, corporate fascists paying off criminals in Washington DC, and the military industrial complex enforcing Washington’s power across the globe. The country longs for an Andrew Jackson or a Dwight Eisenhower. Instead we are stuck with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.

Democrats consider dropping insurance ban on pre-existing conditions

An astute blogger noted that the new proposals floated by Democrats in the wake of the massive health care bill's collapse is a provision that would bar denying coverage for those with pre-existing conditions -- but only if they were under 19. "Did someone just chuck pre-existing conditions overboard?" he wrote.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, Obamacare will force those who may not need or be able to afford health insurance to buy health insurance, but those who need health insurance can be refused by the health insurance companies.

FLASHBACK - Report Ties Dubious Iran Nuclear Docs to Israel

A report on Iran’s nuclear programme issued by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last month generated news stories publicising an incendiary charge that U.S. intelligence is underestimating Iran’s progress in designing a "nuclear warhead" before the halt in nuclear weapons-related research in 2003.

That false and misleading charge from an intelligence official of a foreign country, who was not identified but was clearly Israeli, reinforces two of Israel’s key propaganda themes on Iran – that the 2007 U.S. National Intelligence Estimate on Iran is wrong, and that Tehran is poised to build nuclear weapons as soon as possible.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Virtually every charge of "Nuclear weapons" against Iran (and Iraq) came in part from Israel, which has a vested interest in seeing young Americans die for, and older Americans pay for, wars on Israel's enemies.

Happiness in Slavery

According to the Federal Reserve’s most recent report on wealth, America’s private net worth was $53.4 trillion as of September, 2009. But at the same time, America’s debt and unfunded liabilities totaled at least $120,000,000,000,000.00 ($120 trillion), or 225% of the citizens’ net worth. Even if the government expropriated every dollar of private wealth in the nation, it would still have a deficit of $66,600,000,000,000.00 ($66.6 trillion), equal to $214,286.00 for every man, woman and child in America and roughly 500% of GDP. If the government does not directly seize the nation’s private wealth, then it will require $389,610 from each and every citizen to balance the country’s books.”

No Climategate FoI prosecutions

First off, I was told that while there appeared to be a problem, I needed to be clear that there would be no prosecutions under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act, regardless of the final outcome of the investigation. Although withholding or destroying information is a criminal offence under the terms of the Act, apparently no prosecutions can be brought for offences committed more than six months prior. As anyone who has made a UK FoI request knows, it can take six months to exhaust the internal review process before the ICO even becomes involved. The ICO can then take another six months before starting his investigation.

Climategate update: 'The wheels are coming off for the IPCC'

All in all, not a good week for the IPCC. Two major errors, both of them integrating inflammatory, un-reviewed results into what had been advertised as the most authoritative peer-reviewed summary of the state of climate science. This follows the collapse of Copenhagen, and the Climategate emails’ evidence of pressure to influence the results of climate science. All of them working in the same direction: to slant the evidence presented to the world toward the conclusion that AGW is a current crisis, a world cataclysm.

Flight 253 Cover-Up: "No Smoking Gun" Claims Undercut by New Disclosures

Nearly one month after passengers foiled an attempted suicide bomb attack aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 as it approached Detroit on Christmas Day, new information reveals that the White House and U.S. security agencies had specific intelligence on accused terrorist, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, far earlier than previously acknowledged.

Along with new reports, evidence suggests that the administration's cover-up of the affair has very little to do with a failure by the intelligence apparatus to "connect the dots" and may have far more serious political implications for the Obama administration, and what little remains of a functioning democracy in the United States, than a botched bombing.

Top Senate Democrat lays out deficit curbs

The top Senate Democrat wants to make it more difficult to run up the deficit with new tax cuts or expansions of federal benefit programs.

IRAQ: Sectarian tension ahead of polls threatens “humanitarian crisis” - analysts

A government move to exclude a number of prominent Sunni candidates from national parliamentary elections on 7 March could re-ignite sectarian violence and create a new humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country, according to some analysts.

Securing Disaster in Haiti

Nine days after the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, it's now clear that the initial phase of the U.S.-led relief operation has conformed to the three fundamental tendencies that have shaped the more general course of the island's recent history. [1] It has adopted military priorities and strategies. It has sidelined Haiti's own leaders and government, and ignored the needs of the majority of its people. And it has proceeded in ways that reinforce the already harrowing gap between rich and poor. All three tendencies aren't just connected, they are mutually reinforcing.

Why Did the ‘Stimulus’ Fail to Help the Economy?

An economy has a structure of production that when working well directs resources, labor, and capital toward those areas of production that reflect the desires and needs of consumers.

When governments expand money through the central bank, the rush of new money distorts the production structure and changes the relative value of assets and factors of production. In the early stages of this government-inspired boom, the malinvested assets (the ones that become more valuable as a result of the artificial boom itself) expand relative to other assets.

Iran's unspoken nuclear victory

Under a UN-brokered proposal, the United States, France and Russia had planned to sell the much needed fuel to Iran under their own conditions.

Tehran had welcomed the gist of the proposal, but asked for guarantees that the fuel would be delivered in a timely manner, citing previous failures by global powers in their nuclear deals with the country.

They, however, did not deem necessary further assurances.

Iran then moved to update the proposal when in mid-December it offered to exchange 400 kilos of uranium with fuel, under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on its Kish Island in the Persian Gulf.

World powers were not fond of the new counter proposal either. They insisted that the original draft should be the base of any likely deal.

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics will be the largest security operation in Canadian history. It will include more than 15,000 Canadian Forces, private security personnel, along with the RCMP and other police agencies. The U.S. will also provide security and support for the Games. With the Olympics fast approaching, the fear of terrorism is back in the public’s psyche. Although there has been no specific threats to the Games, more than anything, it is the danger of terrorism which is used to justify the huge security operation. This is further advancing the militarization of North America and U.S.-Canada military and security integration. The Olympics will take bi-national security cooperation to a whole new level.

Iranian elephant in the Iraqi room

All the circumstantial evidence thus points to Iranian blessings for the AJC's bombshell on Iraq's Sunni politicians, further complicating the US's goal of phased withdrawal following the March elections. If Iraq's sectarian divide settles down into an ominous and lengthy shadow over the post-election state's make-up, the Barack Obama administration's timetable of winding up combat operations and exiting the scene by August 2010 might leave behind a status quo that strategically benefits Iran the most.

US lends firepower to Yemen fight

U.S. and U.K. military personnel were not present, since they’re not allowed to be seen or photographed by the press to avoid drawing attention to their presence on the ground in Yemen, the Yemeni soldier said. His voice was muffled by a black nylon facemask. For his own safety, he said he did not want his identity revealed. He would not give his name or allow himself to be recorded on video.

The presence of Western military personnel in Yemen is “sensitive,” he said, gesturing with an unlit cigarette.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yemeni governmental officials may think that they can limit US involvement in their fight against the insurgents.

But having American "advisors" training their soldiers is the proverbial camel's nose under the tent.

Unless there are meaningful cease-fires and negotiations to all the battles Yemen is fighting (including a secessionist movement), we are going to see a greatly expanded US military involvement here, whether the Yemeni government wants this or not.

The problems here will never be resolved through military action alone. They are economic, social, and political, in a country with extreme poverty and corruption.

You can't resolve those issues with bullets and bombs.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates hosted a meeting with the nation’s top defense company executives Wednesday, stressing the need for a closer partnership with them and pledging to work with the White House to secure steady growth in the Pentagon’s budgets over time, according to his spokesman.

Memo to the Democratic and Republican parties: the anger working, taxpaying Americans are experiencing will manifest itself very intensely in the next congressional elections, and no one will be immune. Anti-incumbency sentiment will be at an historical high.

But since both parties have morphed into the War Party, from which so many in congress profit so handsomely, you have no ones to blame but yourselves.

I would like to suggest to you that, instead of continuing to vote this country bankrupt, with billions of bucks spent for these wars without end for resources over which other hapless world residents are sitting, that you try a different tack.

It's called negotiation.

Russia and China have been cleaning the US's clock over the last several years, brokering high profile, win/win deals for oil and natural gas.

We've been waging wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to achieve the same outcome.

What's wrong with this picture, ladies and gentlemen of the US congress?!?

Mobilize Now to Oust Bernanke as Fed Chair

Webmaster's Commentary:

Geithner has as much as threatened to trash the stock market (thereby proving that the government does manipulate them) is Bernanke is not reconfirmed.

This is, under any reasonable definition of the word, an act of terror.

Since it is the avowed policy of the US Government to never yield to terror and indeed to attack and kill the person or persons engaging in terroristic threatening, both Geithner and Bernanke must be fired immediately and placed under arrest.

SEC mulled national security status for AIG details

U.S. securities regulators originally treated the New York Federal Reserve's bid to keep secret many of the details of the American International Group bailout like a request to protect matters of national security, according to emails obtained by Reuters.

When corporate financial data is treated as a state secret, you know we have become a fascist dictatorship.

The Obama Administration's Cover-up of the Flight 253 Affair

Relevant questions begging for answers include: Who made the decision not to "connect the dots"? Are right-wing elements and holdovers from the previous administration actively conspiring to destabilize the Obama government? Was the attempted bombing a planned provocation meant to incite new conflicts in the Middle East and restrict democratic rights at home?

As with the 9/11 attacks, these questions go unasked by corporate media. Indeed, such lines of inquiry are entirely off the table and are further signs that a cover-up is in full-swing, not a hard-hitting investigation.

They are so anxious that they have released a tape that they are claiming is the very dead Osama bin Laden threatening the US with acts of terrorism if they continue to support Israel.

Baghdad Hotel Blasts Kill 11 In Iraq: Babylon Hotel, Al-Hamra Hotel Attacked

Iraq's government spokesman says Saddam Hussein's notorious cousin "Chemical Ali" was executed Monday about a week after being sentenced to death for the poison gas attacks that killed more than 5,000 Kurds in 1988.

News of the hanging came shortly after three suicide car bombs struck downtown Baghdad. It was not immediately clear whether the attacks were linked the execution of Ali Hassan al-Majid.

UN wrongly linked global warming to natural disasters

THE United Nations climate science panel faces new controversy for wrongly linking global warming to an increase in the number and severity of natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods.

It based the claims on an unpublished report that had not been subjected to routine scientific scrutiny — and ignored warnings from scientific advisers that the evidence supporting the link too weak. The report's own authors later withdrew the claim because they felt the evidence was not strong enough.

Geithner Warns That Markets Could Dive If Bernanke Is Not Reconfirmed

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, in a recent interview with Mike Allen of Politico warned that the financial markets could react negatively if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke isn't confirmed for a second term. (READ Politico's full story here.)

Geithner suggested that the market would see a failed Bernanke confirmation as "very troubling," but claimed that he was "very confident" Bernanke would receive enough Senate votes to win a second term.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Tim Geithner: the stock market has lost any real reflection of the economy as a whole. And by making this threat, you have reconfirmed to We the People that we are not living in a democracy, but in a plutocratic "thugocracy".

And Tim, if you don't believe me, talk to any one of the SAM'S CLUB employees who just got laid off this last weekend. (Of course, you won't; in your ivory-towered life, you probably don't even speak to people who toil lots of hours for low wages).

The only people profiting right now are the large banking institutions like GOLDMAN SACHS.

Bernanke's confirmation will mean absolutely nothing to those taxpaying citizens, those people who are, according to your characterization, "....incredibly angry and frustrated by the damage this crisis caused.."

And as to the following statement:

'In the second portion of the interview, Geithner said that the financial rescue program which "was designed to bring capital back into the financial system so banks could lend again" was "remarkably successful." '

"Remarkably successful", my astrolabe!

Tim, you really need to get out more.

When was the last time you talked to a developer, whose line of credit just got yanked for no damned good reason, or can't get funding at an interest rate which makes it possible for them to get a decent return on investment?!?

The Fed itself should be abolished, as it has brought no real value to We the Taxpayers. The government of the US can - and should - be creating its own currency.

Oscar Preview

MK: “Two years ago, the Academy came to the belated realization that holocaust movies and documentaries are getting a disproportionate amount of nominations just because of their subject matter. Moreover, many of these films are thematically repetitious, stereotypical and historically dubious. They don’t so much present historical entertainment as they do historical dogma. As such, they constitute propaganda. Of course, you can criticize any film genre, but since the U.S. movie industry is dominated by a hierarchy of Jews, many of whom support Israel, the Academy felt that holocaust movie genre was compromising the aesthetic and moral integrity of the awards. Therefore, it decided to create a special category for holocaust-themed propaganda—‘The Leni’ for short.”

The Shoa Must Go On by Gilad Atzmon

Ukrainian born John Demjanjuk, 89, is accused by the Munich court of being an ‘accessory’* in the death of 27,900 Jews at the Sobibor camp while being a German POW. As it happens, the German Justice system is now chasing ‘accessories’ to the Nazi crime. Embarrassingly enough it doesn’t do very well in the current case. Demjanjuk denies anything to do with the crime referred to him and furthermore, the German prosecution lacks any evidence whatsoever that supports or links Demjanjuk personally with murder or any other holocaust related criminal event.

Troop surge 'could bring peace' with Taliban': McChrystal

The NATO commander in Afghanistan said his troop surge could lead to a negotiated peace with the Taliban, in an interview published on Monday ahead of a major conference this week on the war.

US General Stanley McChrystal also told the Financial Times he hopes his allies will leave Thursday's meeting in London with a "renewed commitment" to the increasingly bloody conflict.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Is General Mc Chrystal barking mad?!?

This "surge" is not going to bring the Taliban to the table. They will not have to come to any table, because the US and NATO troops are losing, and will continue to lose. The Taliban has set up parallel governmental entities, and those entities are functioning, unlike those of the Karzai government.

Even with the surge of troops and contract mercenaries, we do not, nor have we ever had enough boots on the ground to win a successful ground ground campaign.

The continued aerial assaults guarantee two things, and two things only.

These are: 1. the killing of one heck of a lot of innocent civilians, and 2. the radicalizing of those left standing even further against the US, NATO, and the Karzai government, which Afghanis see as the US's and NATO's appointed puppet.

The level of corruption in the Karzai regime is legend. Payoffs of governmental officials is the only way to get something done. Opium production has soared after the US/NATO invasion and occupation.

And,as reported here yesterday:

They have even had to postpone their parliamentary election after the farce last year, coupled with alleged "lack of funds" to hold them.

All the Taliban has to do is continue their war of attrition. At the end of the day, for US and NATO forces, their will be a "Saigon Moment", just as there was for the old Soviet Union.

At that point, the US and NATO will need to negotiate with whatever government is left standing for the rights to the pipeline routes, which has been the unachieved objective of this 8 years - and counting - military misadventure.

Car bombs rock Baghdad hotels, 36 dead

Three large car bombs rocked well-known Baghdad hotels on Monday, killing at least 36 people and ending a 1-1/2-month lull in coordinated assaults on the Iraqi capital as the country heads into a March election.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Why is the US even still in Iraq? We were told the objectives of the war were revenge for 9-11, Saddam's "nooks", and Iraq's support for al Qaeda.

There were no nuclear weapons or any weapons of mass destruction. As it turns out, Saddam was in compliance with the United Nations (unlike Israel).

We have both Dick Cheney and Former President Bush on tape admitting Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. The only people arrested on the day of 9-11 turned out to be Mossad.

Iraq was never aiding "Al Qaeda" (many of whom turned out to also be Mossad). Al Qaeda claims to desire theocratic rule and Iraq was the only secular government in the region.

So why are we still there when it is clear that the Iraqi people want us all to leave?

The Federal Reserve Has Failed Miserably

What are the mandates of the Federal Reserve? In the Fed’s own words, the primary mandate of the Federal Reserve from its inception in 1913 has been:

“conducting the nation’s monetary policy by influencing the monetary and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of maximum employment, stable prices (LD’s emphasis), and moderate long-term interest rates.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yes, by the definitions under which the Fed was created, it is a failure.

As were its two predecessors.

70-year gag on Kelly death evidence

Evidence relating to the death of Government weapons inspector David Kelly is to be kept secret for 70 years, it has been reported.

A highly unusual ruling by Lord Hutton, who chaired the inquiry into Dr Kelly's death, means medical records including the post-mortem report will remain classified until after all those with a direct interest in the case are dead, the Mail on Sunday reported.

And a 30-year secrecy order has been placed on written records provided to Lord Hutton's inquiry which were not produced in evidence.

A Quest to End Spending Rules for Campaigns

A Quest to End Spending Rules for Campaigns

WASHINGTON — James Bopp Jr. likes to begin speeches by reading the First Amendment. He calls opponents, including President Obama, “socialists.” He runs a national law practice out of a small office in Terre Haute, Ind., because he prefers the city’s conservative culture.

And for most of the last 35 years, he has been a lonely Quixote tilting at the very idea of regulating political donations as an affront to free speech.

Not anymore. Mr. Bopp won his biggest victory last week when the Supreme Court ruled that corporations, unions and nonprofit groups have the right to spend as much as they want supporting or opposing the election of a candidate.

War Is Sin

War Is Sin
Posted on Jun 1, 2009
By Chris Hedges
The crisis faced by combat veterans returning from war is not simply a profound struggle with trauma and alienation. It is often, for those who can slice through the suffering to self-awareness, an existential crisis. War exposes the lies we tell ourselves about ourselves. It rips open the hypocrisy of our religions and secular institutions. Those who return from war have learned something which is often incomprehensible to those who have stayed home. We are not a virtuous nation. God and fate have not blessed us above others. Victory is not assured. War is neither glorious nor noble. And we carry within us the capacity for evil we ascribe to those we fight.

The troubling politics of Avatar

Our elite Boomer ethos—that America is wrong, that machines are bad, that the Bad Dad who made us go to Vietnam is who America is—gives us cultural expressions like Avatar that sell massively in theaters and video-game consoles alike and inculcate a species of self-loathing.

If stories of heroes are the stuff that keeps cultures going, what we are devouring is another story of a hero who is heroic only in rejecting who we are.

This sort of thinking is distinctive to the post-colonialists of the West. Today’s active colonial powers will have none of that thinking.
