New Powers for Geithner - Seizure of Companies

The Obama administration will ask Congress to give the Treasury secretary unprecedented powers to initiate the seizure of non-bank financial companies, such as large insurers, investment firms and hedge funds, whose collapse would damage the broader economy, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said this morning.

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner is set to argue for the new powers at a hearing today on Capitol Hill that was scheduled to address the furor over bonuses paid to executives at American International Group, which the government has propped up with about $180 billion in federal aid. Administration officials say the proposed authority would have allowed them to seize AIG last fall and wind down its operations at less cost to taxpayers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Why is it the responsibility of the US Government to save AIG's counterparties form their own poor choices?

Why is it the responsibility of the US taxpayer to pick up the tab?

FBI’s mole in Real IRA ‘was dishonest as the day is long’

An FBI spy who infiltrated the Real IRA was involved in picking up runaway teenage girls to sleep with and “keep like puppy dogs”, the Omagh bomb civil action has heard.

Lawyers for jailed terror chief Michael McKevitt likened David Rupert to an iceberg, with nearly all of his treachery unexposed beneath the surface.

Rupert was a con-man prepared to do anything short of murder, and anyone who tangled with him came off badly, it was claimed.

PJB: The Weimar Solution

Deflation is what America underwent in the 1930s. A Fed-created bubble burst, causing margin calls to go out to stockholders, who ran to their banks that, besieged, collapsed, wiping out a third of our money. As Milton Friedman, who won a Nobel for his thesis that the Federal Reserve caused the Great Depression, told PBS in 2000:

“For every $100 in paper money, in deposits, in cash, in currency, in existence in 1929, by the time you got to 1933 there was only about $65, $66 left. And that extraordinary collapse in the banking system, with about a third of the banks failing … with millions of people having their savings essentially washed out, that decline was utterly unnecessary.

Why High-Fructose Corn Syrup Causes Insulin Resistance

A new study in mice sheds light on at least part of the reason for the insulin resistance that can come from diets high in high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener found in most sodas and many other processed foods.

Fructose is much more readily metabolized to fat in the liver than glucose, and in the process can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. NAFLD in turn leads to hepatic insulin resistance and type II diabetes.

Israel slams UN rights report on Gaza

Israel on Tuesday slammed as "one-sided" a report by a UN human rights investigator which said its three-week war on the Gaza Strip was possibly a war crime.

"Unfortunately this is a further example of the very one-sided, unbalanced and unfair attitude of the (UN) Human Rights Council," government spokesman Mark Regev told AFP.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"I mean, in fairness if the United Nations is going to report every time Israel drops white phosphorus onto a Gazan school yard, they should report an incident of the Gazans dropping white phosphorus on an Israel school yard! Yes, I know the Gazans didn't actually do that, but it would be fair for the UN to say that they did!!!!" -- Tel Aviv

(Ahem) Israel, you are raising on a busted flush on this one. Quit while you still have some dignity ... never mind.

U.N. reports say Israel targeted civilians in Gaza

United Nations investigators said on Monday Israel violated a range of human rights during its invasion of Gaza, including targeting civilians and using a child as a human shield.

The accusations came in reports to the U.N. Human Rights Council which also called for an urgent end to Israeli restrictions on humanitarian supplies to Gaza and a full international investigation into the conflict.

"Civilian targets, particularly homes and their occupants, appear to have taken the brunt of the attacks, but schools and medical facilities have also been hit," said one report by Radhika Coomaraswamy, the U.N. Secretary-General's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict.

The Big Takeover

No empire can survive being rendered a permanent laughingstock, which is what happened as of a few weeks ago, when the buffoons who have been running things in this country finally went one step too far. It happened when Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was forced to admit that he was once again going to have to stuff billions of taxpayer dollars into a dying insurance giant called AIG, itself a profound symbol of our national decline — a corporation that got rich insuring the concrete and steel of American industry in the country's heyday, only to destroy itself chasing phantom fortunes at the Wall Street card tables, like a dissolute nobleman gambling away the family estate in the waning days of the British Empire.

Obama Dials Down Wall Street Criticism

Bankers were shell-shocked, especially when Congress moved to heavily tax bonuses. When administration officials began calling them to talk about the next phase of the bailout, the bankers turned the tables. They used the calls to lobby against the antibonus legislation, Wall Street executives say. Several big firms called Treasury and White House officials to urge a more reasonable approach, both sides say. The banks' message: If you want our help to get credit flowing again to consumers and businesses, stop the rush to penalize our bonuses.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Time to believe Gaza war crimes allegations

Ashkenazi reacted like most Israelis - as though the reports, including those in Haaretz and Maariv, were the first about the Gaza offensive that were issued by someone other than the military spokesman or the military reporters, who rely on him for their information. But ample information was available from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reports, based on statements collected from hundreds of people in the Gaza Strip in January and February.

Ashkenazi, like other Israelis, could have read the Red Cross' protest during the offensive, that the IDF prevented medical teams from reaching wounded Palestinians by shooting at them. He or his aides could have gone to the Web site set up by Israeli human rights organizations, which was full of reports and testimonies.

People died at Three Mile Island

As news of the accident poured into the global media, the public was assured there were no radiation releases.

That quickly proved to be false.

The public was then told the releases were controlled and done purposely to alleviate pressure on the core.

Both those assertions were false.

The public was told the releases were "insignificant."

But stack monitors were saturated and unusable, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission later told Congress it did not know---and STILL does not know---how much radiation was released at Three Mile Island, or where it went.

The Canadian JDL has blown the cover by going on record as saying they opposed Galloway's entry into the country. See the video where Galloway confronts them in my earlier blog entry. And don't forget Kenney's pals, the rabbis.

Jews have a lot of occult guilt over what's being done to Palestinians and hidden guilt tends to express itself by creating more of same.

The utterly hypocritical alliance between Israel and evangelic Christianity (one side suckering the other into supporting it by turning itself into a "Holy Land" theme park - the other side playing nice while plotting to either convert all the Jews from their inferior religion, or happily consign them to eternal hellfire) has allowed some of the worst crimes in history.

The Origins of John F. Kennedy’s Struggle against the CIA

A couple months ago I wrote a DU post titled “The GAME”, which I began by noting the many unmentionable things in U.S. politics, and I concluded that the purpose of the censoring of so many important issues is the creation of an alternate reality among a critical mass of the American people. The belief in that alternate reality is necessary in order to convince the American people to continue to play the GAME that has been laid out for them by the GAME’s masters. For the actual reality of the GAME’s methods and purposes, I believe, is so terrible that if people consciously recognized it they would refuse to play, and the GAME would have to be radically altered or come to an end – peaceful or otherwise. The ultimate purpose of the GAME’s masters is to arrange the world to their advantage or according to the way that they believe things should be. In pursuit of their goals we have wars, overthrow of sovereign governments, and obscene wealth accumulation into the hands of the GAME’s masters and prime players.

FLASHBACK - CONGRESS PASSES WIDE-RANGING BILL EASING BANK LAWS

Congress approved landmark legislation today that opens the door for a new era on Wall Street in which commercial banks, securities houses and insurers will find it easier and cheaper to enter one another's businesses.

...

The decision to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 provoked dire warnings from a handful of dissenters that the deregulation of Wall Street would someday wreak havoc on the nation's financial system. The original idea behind Glass-Steagall was that separation between bankers and brokers would reduce the potential conflicts of interest that were thought to have contributed to the speculative stock frenzy before the Depression.

Karzai's rule has been marked by two related and disturbing trends: a deteriorating security situation and an increase in opium production. Nobel outrage at South Africa’s decision to ban the Dalai Lama

South Africa was plunged into a diplomatic row yesterday after the Government barred the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, from entering the country to take part in a peace conference linked to the 2010 football World Cup.

The decision, confirmed to The Times by senior government officials, was met with outrage by his fellow Nobel peace laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the former President F. W. de Klerk, who are organising the conference on March 27 with the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee.

Government Again Concedes Vaccines Cause Autism

In a curious and hypocritical method of operation, the mysterious Vaccine Court not only protects vaccine makers from liability but supports a policy that has tripled the number of vaccines given to U.S. children – all after being made aware of the fact that these vaccines do, in fact, cause autism and repeatedly ruling in favor of families with children hurt by their vaccines.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The law that protects vaccine makers from lawsuits was included in the bill that created the Department of Homeland Security.

MT State considers return to gold, silver dollars

A bill being considered in the Montana Legislature blasts the Federal Reserve's role in America's money policy and permits the state to conduct business in gold and silver instead of the Fed's legal tender notes.

Montana H.B. 639, sponsored by State Rep. Bob Wagner, R-Harrison, doesn't require the state or citizens to conduct business in gold or silver, but it does require the state to calculate certain transactions in both the current legal tender system and in an electronic gold currency. It further mandates that the state must accept payments in gold or silver for various fees and purchases.

THE ‘GAME’ CALLED WAR

Israel has created an enemy of a nation which it claims does not even exist. It has, for the past 61 years, occupied the land belonging to that nation. It has denied them every basic human right guaranteed them by the United Nations. It has ignored every condemnation against them by the World Body as well as a handful of other nations.

Death squad leader ‘was top CIA agent'

THE LATE President Milosevic's secret police chief and organiser of Serb death squads during the genocidal ethnic cleansing of disintegrating Yugoslavia was the United States' top CIA agent in Belgrade, according to the independent Belgrade Radio B92.

The claim that from 1992 until the end of the decade, Jovica Stanisic, head of Serbia's murderous DB Secret Police, was regularly informing his CIA handlers of the thinking in Milosevic's inner circle has shocked the region.

Americans' interrogation methods have probably destroyed the nation's reputation

It's unlikely that the United States will ever live down the shame of torture during the George W. Bush-Dick Cheney administration.

The United States of Chaos, a fresh look

In fact, it seems the more things are said to change the more they stay the same: inflation, deflation, unemployment, rendition of detainees, torture redux, Blackwater re-upped by the Pentagon despite Iraq saying no dice. Also, Bernie needs to straighten out some papers at home.

I'm Surrounded by Beautiful People.

It appears that we don’t know much about what came before and it looks like we generally don’t know jack about what’s coming. Here we are in the seventh day and the one thing you might reasonably expect is that we might have learned something about how to behave toward each other but we haven’t learned a damn thing about that either.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Seven thousand years and counting and the only difference between you and the classical image of the cave man are your weapons and appliances. Other than that, nothing has changed.

The Lasting Problem of Guantanamo Bay Prison

The prison at Guantanamo Bay has become such an international symbol of the U.S. abandoning its principles because it reflects an anti-terrorism policy gone badly awry. First, the Bush administration was both callous and careless in imprisoning people, even paying unreliable tribal allies for captives. Second, the U.S. government created no effective and objective truth-determining processto assess guilt. Third, Washington employed torture, violating both domestic and international law.

No doubt dangerous terrorists have been incarcerated at Gitmo. But so too have many innocent people.

What More in the Name of Love?

If there is a day for mass action in the United States for peace and justice, April 4 is it. And if there is a place for it right now, it's Wall Street. April 3rd is a Friday, so more robber barons will be at "work" that day, but April 4th is a Saturday, so more of the robbed will be off work and able to take part. April 4 is also the anniversary, not only of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, death in 1968, but of his speech exactly one year earlier at Riverside Church in New York City in 1967.

Airport security technique debated

Behavior detection is a touchy topic at the nation's airports. An October report by the National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, concluded that there is "no scientific consensus" that behavioral surveillance techniques like those employed by the TSA are an effective way to combat terrorism. It found they have "enormous potential for privacy violations."

Some security experts and civil libertarians say the practice also invites ethnic profiling.

But the agency defends the practice. Carl Maccario of the TSA helped develop the program known as Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques, or SPOT.

Water, Crisis and War

Many, including the US, may believe Iran and North Korea’s existent or non-existent nuclear weapons pose the gravest threat to human existence. However, the scarcity of safe drinking water will prove to be the biggest challenge to humanity in the coming decades.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are some pretty effective and very inexpensive water purification and desalinization systems out there. And I have no doubt that if we were to take just 10% of the money spent on making bombs we could develop some pretty decent water treatment technologies.

But I suspect that this concern over the nonavailability of fresh water is being promoted, like global warming, for private profit. Already much water service, formerly a function of government is now in private hands. People drink water from plastic bottles because the tap water, harmless in my childhood, is now contaminated with industrial chemicals and medical wastes that the municipal water treatment plants cannot remove.

Corporations clearly want monopolistic control over the basic necessities of life; the better to control and exploit the masses!

Financial Policy Despair

Over the weekend The Times and other newspapers reported leaked details about the Obama administration’s bank rescue plan, which is to be officially released this week. If the reports are correct, Tim Geithner, the Treasury secretary, has persuaded President Obama to recycle Bush administration policy — specifically, the “cash for trash” plan proposed, then abandoned, six months ago by then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

This is more than disappointing. In fact, it fills me with a sense of despair.

IDF ceased long ago being 'most moral army in the world'

What shock, what consternation. Haaretz revealed grave accounts by officers and soldiers describing the killing of innocent Palestinian civilians during the war in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces Spokesman was quick to respond that the IDF had no prior or supporting information about the events in question, the defense minister was quick to respond that "the IDF is the most moral army in the world," and the military advocate general said the IDF would investigate.

All these propagandistic and ridiculous responses are meant not only to deceive the public, but also to offer shameless lies. The IDF knew very well what its soldiers did in Gaza. It has long ceased to be the most moral army in the world. Far from it - it will not seriously investigate anything.

A New Look At CE 399 and the Autopsy of JFK

As shown in a January 22, 1963 Warren Commission closed-door secret session, of which a surviving stenographer’s tape (ordered destroyed but was not) clearly shows that the Commission decided early on to go for the lone gunman scenario. They were afraid of finding out more than they wanted to know about Lee H. Oswald and feared if it were discovered that he was a government agent of some type, then the public would never believe the lone gunman theory. Notice the thinking here—they have a predetermined conclusion and they concerned about the pubic not buying it. This is before the first witness was called to testify!

The Forked-Tongue Eunuchs and Israel

For years, US administrations called Israeli settlements "illegal" and an "obstacle to peace," but in recent years those terms have been replaced by a mere "unhelpful." On her first official trip to the region earlier this month, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton referred to the Israeli demolition of Palestinian Arab homes in East Jerusalem as "unhelpful." Earlier this week, the European Union presidency said that Israel's demolition of homes in the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem "threatens the viability of a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement, in conformity with international law."

Brit Hume and the demented world of Fox News

Respectable, "mainstream", and "serious" American foreign policy differences that are allowed to see the light of day in our media fall into one of two camps.

The first camp believes that anything more than issuing bad faith ultimatums before dropping bombs is appeasement.

The second camp believes the US should spend a little time manufacturing legalisms before commencing our wanton aggressions and also arm twist a few "allies" into blessing our murder campaigns against hapless weakling third world countries on the other side of the globe before hand.

Obama falls into the second camp. To what passes for a "right wing" in this country he is now "appeasing" Iran for sending them a video tape address in which he doesn't threaten to murder them or call them dirty Moooslim scum.
