Electricity theft rising in Detroit

Electricity theft rising in Detroit

Desperation can make people do stupid and dangerous things. So can greed.

Both motivators are at work in Metro Detroit to fuel what DTE Energy calls an epidemic of utility thefts. As many as 70,000 Michigan homes and businesses — or roughly 3 percent of DTE’s customers — are stealing natural gas and electricity. While the bulk of the illegal hookups are in Detroit, the thefts are found in nearly every community throughout the region.

Media Lies by Omission: Biased survey over-inflates public support for airport scanners

There is one glaring omission from these and the many media reports that published 'news' articles based on the Unisys press release. That is who Unisys is, their connections with government, military, Homeland security, the Transportation Services Authority (TSA) and how they profit from airport security technologies. The failure of the mainstream media to report the true source and motives behind this survey is a clear example of how they lie by omitting the most important facts.

Well, we all knew it would be a second whitewash of CRU and its climate alarmist pseudo-data; but even the most hard-headed sceptics among us probably thought that Lord Oxburgh’s inquiry would be a tad more sophisticated in its brushwork, that it would make some effort to persuade rather than patronise, that its bland conclusions would be a little less blatant and in-your-face.

ClimateGate Whitewash

There is now a desperate effort afoot by assorted climate alarmists to explain away the revelations of the incriminating e-mails leaked last year from the University of East Anglia (UEA). A concerted whitewash campaign is in full swing to save the IPCC and its questionable conclusion that the warming of the last thirty years is anthropogenic. But ongoing investigations so far have avoided the real issue, namely whether the reported warming is genuine or a manufactured result by scientists in England and the United States who manipulated temperature data.

CLIMATEGATE - Whitewashing is quick work!

Hard on the heels of the report of the one-day British Parliamentary inquiry into the Climategate scandal comes the report of the grandly-named International Science Assessment Panel set up by the University of East Anglia (UEA). Surprise, surprise, it finds nothing wrong except a few lapses in concentration caused by all the hard work climate scientists are doing to save the planet. Unfortunately for the alarmist cheerleaders who will treat these reports as complete exoneration, they suffer from exactly the same problems as the scientific reports Climategate centered around. They are sloppy and incomplete while pretending to be the comprehensive answer. As such, they damage the authority of science just as much as Climategate itself.

Like rape, pedophilia is not about sex, but rather about power. For this reason, it would not matter if priests were married. In fact, most sexual abuse of children is committed by heterosexual males. Thus, attempting to treat symptoms of institutionalized pedophilia by allowing priests to marry or by accusing abusing priests of homosexuality is pointless because it does not address the systemic nature of these criminal acts against children which has little to do with marital status or sexual orientation.

Europe's Tax Lesson: VAT Rates Start Low, Rise; Income Tax Rates Remain High

VATs were sold in Europe as a way to tax consumption, which in principle does less economic harm than taxing income, savings or investment. This sounds good, but in practice the VAT has rarely replaced the income tax, or even resulted in a lower income-tax rate. The top individual income tax rate remains very high in Europe despite the VAT, with an average on the continent of about 46%.

Webmaster's Commentary:

We have an excise tax here in Hawaii; like the VAT it is assessed at each stage of production, with the bill passed along to consumers at the cash register. It was sold to Hawaii as a means to lower the state income tax. The state income tax continues to rise, and now the state legislature is debating on how much to raise the excise tax. They are addicted to our money and it is time for an intervention.

It was less than a month ago that the Pentagon was declaring Wali Karzai’s very presence a serious threat to the Kandahar invasion. But Hamid Karzai insisted his half brother would stay regardless of concerns and it appears the US has backed down.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US doesn't want to lose its stranglehold on the drug trade, from which so many profit so handsomely.

In fact, that outcome of controlling the drug trade is working out so well that Russian Officials are stating that an "undeclared war" is being waged against that country, because of all the cheap, illegal Afghan heroin which is flooding their country (when the drugs are controlled, where those drugs wing up are also controlled.)

The 'Obama doctrine': kill, don't detain

The ambitious desire to close Guantánamo hailed the coming of a new era, a feeling implicitly recognised by the Nobel peace prize that President Obama received. Unfortunately, what we witnessed was a false dawn.

Worse still, a completely new trend has emerged that, in many ways, is more dangerous than the trends under Bush. Extrajudicial killings and targeted assassinations will soon become the main point of contention that Obama's administration will need to justify.

Dr. Strangelove, Made in Israel

Dr. Kass’ position and access inevitably raise a number of questions. Her appointment is somewhat unseemly, which even the Air Force appeared to recognize when it removed her bio from the website. To challenge Dr. Kass’s position is not to question her academic credentials and intelligence or even her ability or integrity, but it is not unreasonable to ask why the Pentagon would appoint to a sensitive position someone who was born, raised, and served at a senior level with the armed forces in a foreign country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Upon reading this, the hair on the back of my neck is standing up straight, and tap-dancing.

In an atmosphere of doubt about the validity of the voting process, it appears that the entire voting process is a sham, a trick to fool the American people into accepting whatever is done to them by creating the illusion that the people somehow voted for and approved of whatever is being done. That's how Batista fooled the Cuban people. That's how the USSR fooled the Soviet citizens. And that's how the American government fools us.

Do We The People owe that $14 trillion? No, we do not. It was borrowed without our permission. No citizen agreed to repay that money.

Those government officials who borrowed that money and intend that We The People should be forced to repay it can no longer do so on the assumption that they rule with the consent of those who vote.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Let us imagine for a moment that you go to a restaurant, you place an order for a hamburger. The proprietor of the restaurant tells you the cost is $5 for the hamburger, and you pay $5 for the hamburger. You get your food. No problems. Well worth the money you paid for it. No complaints.

Then when you are done eating, the owner of the restaurant shows up at your table, apologizes profusely, explains that he underestimated the real cost of providing you with the hamburger he agreed to serve you and hands you a bill for an additional sum he had to borrow in order to provide the meal plus interest since the start of your meal. Do you pay it? Of course not. You, the customer, entered into a verbal contract with the proprietor of the restaurant to provide you with your meal at the price agreed to by all parties prior to the transaction.

If the proprietor of the restaurant has miscalculated the cost of meeting his agreed-to obligation to the customer, is the customer obligated to cover the shortfall? No. The proprietor of the restaurant is responsible for the error, and if he cannot meet his agreed-to obligations for the agreed-upon price, he should declare bankruptcy, go out of business, and make way for a new restaurant with better fiscal sense.

Simple common sense.

Let us imagine for a moment that you live in a nation, and you request some benefits. The government tells you the cost is $500 for the benefits, and you pay $500 in taxes for the benefits. You get your benefits. No problems. Well worth the money you paid for them. No complaints.

Then when you have your benefits, the government shows up at your door, apologizes profusely, explains that it underestimated the real cost of providing you with the benefits it agreed to provide and hands you a bill for an additional sum it had to borrow in order to provide the services, plus interest since the start of your use of the benefits. Do you pay it? Of course not. You, the citizen, entered into a verbal contract with the government to provide you with your benefits at the taxes agreed to by all parties prior to the transaction.

If the government has miscalculated the cost of meeting the agreed-to obligation to the citizen, is the citizen obligated to cover the shortfall? No. The government is responsible for the error, and if it cannot meet it's agreed-to obligations for the agreed-upon price, it should declare bankruptcy, go out of business, and make way for a new government with better fiscal sense.

Simple common sense.

Gates criticizes Wikileaks Iraq video

The US Secretary of Defense has blasted the release of a video footage by the Internet group WikiLeaks showing the killing of Iraqi civilians by a US helicopter fire.

Robert Gates said on Tuesday that the WikiLeak video footage is out of context and depicts an incomplete picture of the battlefield.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sorry, Sec Def Gates: the horse is out of the barn on this one, and shooting the messenger isn't going to make this issue go away.

Going for broke in L.A.?

In a conversation with The Times over the weekend, Riordan argued that bankruptcy may be the only way to attack the structural problem gnawing the heart out of the city budget: unsustainable public employee pension costs. Currently, Riordan says, the city is struggling to meet its pension obligations, and that's assuming it will receive 8% annually on the money invested on retirees' behalf. In fact, the average return over the past decade has been just 4%. Over the next few years, L.A. may be looking at $1.5 billion in pension obligations it can't meet. "We need some adults to come alive in the city and to talk through how to meet that liability," he said. "If that doesn't happen, we shouldn't rule out bankruptcy."

Foreclosure rates surge, biggest jump in 5 years

A record number of U.S. homes were lost to foreclosure in the first three months of this year, a sign banks are starting to wade through the backlog of troubled home loans at a faster pace, according to a new report.

RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday that the number of U.S. homes taken over by banks jumped 35 percent in the first quarter from a year ago. In addition, households facing foreclosure grew 16 percent in the same period and 7 percent from the last three months of 2009.

More homes were taken over by banks and scheduled for a foreclosure sale than in any quarter going back to at least January 2005, when RealtyTrac began reporting the data, the firm said.

Syria: Israel's Scud accusation may be pretense for attack

Israel might be preparing a military strike against Syria by accusing Damascus of supplying Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon with long-range Scud missiles, the Syrian government said on Thursday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Syrian government may well be absolutely right on this.

ACTA Treaty: Can Seize, Destroy Your PC, Electronics

ACTA was designed to enact the constant monitoring of everyone's online activities -- both legitimate and non-legitimate -- and gives border agents in the U.S. and other member states the power to search and seize your equipment without a warrant. Effectively, it gives these officials the power to destroy U.S. citizens' laptops, iPods or CDs if the agents suspect they might contain copyright-infringing content.

Webmaster's Commentary:

They can destroy your electronics if they only suspect that it might contain copyright-infringing content.

Probably better to stop buying mp3 players, iPads, or any of that stuff from now on. The movies are all remakes and today's focus-group engineered music all sounds the same anyway, so why waste time and money on these gadgets anymore if the government goons are going to smash them anyway like they smashed my laptop, only this time DELIBERATLY!

Boycott personal electronics! You know those small people living in your house? Those are your children. Unplug the headphones and introduce yourself. You might enjoy it!

World Jewish leader to Obama: Is U.S. committed to Israel's security?

World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder has publicly questioned U.S. President Barack Obama's commitment to Israel's security, in a letter he reportedly drafted with the approval of his close friend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Our great country and the tiny State of Israel have long shared the core values of freedom and democracy," wrote Lauder, in a letter published Thursday as an advertisement in The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder: stop whining!

US taxpayers shell our 3 billion dollars annually (aid which is, by the way, totally illegal, under the Symington Amendment), plus military aid, to make certain that Israel is secure, on top of the fact that Israel has nuclear weapons with which to insure its security.

Ron, you should really to take a trip to Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, and talk to the Palestinians there about how Israel practices "freedom and democracy" on them.

What they are seeing is a continually aggressive annexation of their lands, which will be followed by forced expulsion of any Palestinian left standing.

Of course, the US will turn a blind eye toward this process, and do nothing to stop this.

So a little less whining and a little more gratitude is definitely in order here.

Toowoomba bishop apologises after abuse teacher pleads guilty

Bishop William Morris of Toowoomba has issued a statement apologising for the abuse suffered by children while under the care of the Diocese.
