FLASHBACK - The assassination of Rafiq Hariri: who benefited?

What of the acknowledged doubt—summarily dismissed by the Post—that the Syrian regime is being “framed” for a crime it did not commit? Curiously, the newspaper gives no indication of who might be responsible for such a frame-up. Here, however, the question of “who benefits” is definitely worth pursuing.

FLASHBACK FOR MEMORIAL DAY - MAJESTIC MEMORIES

The government may declare victory in wars started in foreign lands, but for the people who live in small towns in this land the results are barely distinguishable from defeat. Lives are lost, families destroyed, futures shattered, hopes ruined; all this is the price paid by the people for the "foreign entanglements" we were long ago warned to avoid. The real price of war is paid not just by those who died in it, but by those who are left behind who bury their dead and pay the bills.

Chicago Alderman Has Art Destroyed on Private Property

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's graffiti busters are seen all the time in the city painting over gang signs, or spraying them away. But this week they painted over a mural on private property. The artist says there was no mistaking the mural for graffiti and he thinks the local alderman just didn't like it.

Uprooted

In Roots, Haley — who died on Feb. 10, 1992 — recounts how he pieced together his family's arrival in America through a few African words passed from generation to generation. Historians have long charged that Haley distorted documents. ''There is no evidence that Kunta Kinte existed,'' says genealogist Elizabeth Shown Mills. ''For everything prior to the Civil War, he wrote a story — a darn good story.''

With the opening of Haley's papers at the University of Tennessee, Nobile claims to have found the ''smoking gun'' — tapes and transcripts proving Haley's discovery of ''Kunta Kinte'' was a lie. Among the complaints against the celebrated author:

Paying To Subjugate Yourself

The next five years will determine what the U.S, will look and be like, for the next fifty years. After Bush undermined the government’s revenue base by handing out $3.5 trillion in corporate tax breaks, he started a couple of wars that have, to date, cost an estimated $2.4 trillion. Factor in taxpayer hand outs of a few more trillions to the banks, and the republicans have finally realized their long term goal – breaking the U.S. Government. The day will come when a state is so broke it will ask the corporate banks for help. The help will be conditional of course. The state will be forced to privatize its government functions, which will involve the elimination of all social programs. All of its resources, natural or industrial, will be handed over to corporate management.

Barack Obama Spins the Facts, Takes Single-Payer Health Care Off the Table

The President's response left no doubt that he has taken single-payer healthcare off the table, but his answer lacked the logic and candor we have often come to expect of him. In fact his response seems more than a little disingenuous, and it cannot be permitted to stand unchallenged.

First of all, it is clear that President Obama understands what single-payer is, and given his assertion that it would be the way to go if we were starting from scratch, clearly he realizes that it is the superior system, one that "most industrialized countries around the world" have embraced, and yet he offers what are clearly rationalizations for why we cannot go that route in the United States.

The Economy’s Search for a "New Normal"

The mainstream media is now — for political reasons — in a constant clamor for the economy’s elusive “rock bottom.” This is so people will be more hopeful, less agitated, and more willing to let those who destroyed the economy continue running the country un-challenged. Every time a new economic indicator comes out that wasn’t “as bad as expected,” Wall Street cheers and politicians give their “we’ve turned the corner” speeches. Reality is thus turned on its head.

Regardless of what the media says, the reasons for calling this crisis the “worst since the Great Depression,” still exist. Not only this, but new problems are being created that are compounding the old.

Backlash For AIPAC

I'm telling ya the backlash is a coming. The arrogance of AIPAC and it's attendant Zionist lobbies is unbelievable - it is just the sort of behavior that had the leaders of organised superstition right about "pride coming before the fall". I totally recognise that it won't seem like that at the heart of empire - but the dismissal of the espionage case caused an amount of head scratching from the citizenry. That being followed so soon after by such blatant obeisance to a foreign lobby will be duly noted by the citizenry and it will come back to bite every AIPAC aligned pol on the ass sooner than most can comprehend.

'Kryptos' and Dan Brown: Inside the CIA's code of secrecy

Artist Jim Sanborn thought his 'Kryptos' cypher at the CIA headquarters would be broken within weeks. But two decades later, it still guards its text. David Usborne reports on a mystery that has frustrated the world's best crypto-geeks

Webmaster's Commentary:

This underscores something I have been telling you all for years now.

If you use one of the "accepted" encryption systems, your messages will be easy to read.

Breaking a code takes two steps. First, you need to figure out the method used, then after you have the method, you can search for the key to a specific message.

If you are using a common encryption system, such as DES or RSA, then those who would loot your private communications (like the FBI did at APEC) already have the method. Finding the key is just a matter of time and computer power, and NSA has three acres of computers to play with.

The German ENIGMA is a classic case. Until an ENIGMA machine was captured off of a U-Boat, the method was unknown and Germany's messages were secure. Once the method was derived from the captured machine, Allan Turing's "Bomb" (from the loud ticking sound it made while working) would brute-force the keys. After the war, the US and Britain made gifts of captured ENIGMA machines to "friendly" governments around the world, but never bothered to tell them the messages could be read.

The Tortuous Logic of Nancy Pelosi And her defenders

The speaker of the House is in an increasingly tenuous position. Nothing less than her credibility is at stake. To have Leon Panetta directly contradict her, by issuing a statement declaring that the CIA briefed her "truthfully" and appending to that a general statement addressed to CIA agents who might have been demoralized, even angered, by Pelosi’s charges, is a real slap in the face.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Pelosi ought to be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail, BUT, she is just a side issue.

Prosecutors Block Access to DNA Testing for Inmates

The laws were enacted after DNA evidence exonerated a first wave of prisoners in the early 1990s, when law enforcement authorities strongly resisted reopening old cases. Continued resistance by prosecutors is causing years of delay and, in some cases, eliminating the chance to try other suspects because the statute of limitations has passed by the time the test is granted.

Bill in Congress would ban Gun Ownership at Will

In 2007, according to the Inspector General of the FBI-administered Terrorist Screening Center, there were well over 700,000 names on the no-fly database and the list was growing at an astronomical rate of 20,000 records per month. That means the list now contains more than a million people. Senator Ted Kennedy, Rep. John Lewis, and former Senator Ted Steven’s wife, Catherine Stevens are on the list.

According to Rahm Emanuel, now Obama’s Chief of Staff, every last one of them are terrorists who will have their Second Amendment right to own a firearm stripped.

But instead of focusing the raid on those companies, Faulkner and others say the FBI vacuumed up equipment and data belonging to hundreds of unrelated businesses.

Marijuana Chemical May Fight Brain Cancer

The active chemical in marijuana promotes the death of brain cancer cells by essentially helping them feed upon themselves, researchers in Spain report.

Guillermo Velasco and colleagues at Complutense University in Spain have found that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, causes brain cancer cells to undergo a process called autophagy. Autophagy is the breakdown of a cell that occurs when the cell essentially self-digests.

The team discovered that cannabinoids such as THC had anticancer effects in mice with human brain cancer cells and people with brain tumors. When mice with the human brain cancer cells received the THC, the tumor growth shrank.

Fury as Hanworth speed camera rakes in £1m

A TEMPORARY speed camera in Hanworth has been named as Britain's highest-grossing – bringing in fines of almost £1m in just six months.

16,213 motorists – which equates to more than 100 a day – were caught breaking the temporary 30mph restriction imposed on the A316 Country Way between June and November last year.

The road usually has a 50mph limit but average speed cameras were operating during roadworks at the site to improve signage, street lighting and resurface the road.

The 30mph restriction has been criticised by motorists who say the limit was too drastic a slowdown just a few hundred metres after coming off the busy 70mph M3 motorway.

Ben Chapman posted a message on his website last Thursday as his colleague Elliot Morley was being suspended from the Labour Party for claiming £16,000 of expenses for a non-existent mortgage.

MPs' expenses: John Austin claims £35,000 for flats 11 miles from home

John Austin, a Labour MP, claimed more than £10,000 in expenses for the redecoration of his London flat, which was 11 miles from his main home, before selling it for a profit.

He made £30,000 on the sale and then bought a new flat 1.5 miles away, claiming £10,000 in stamp duty and charges incurred during the move, and a further £15,000 on a new bathroom, kitchen, carpets and appliances.

Mr Austin, the MP for Erith and Thamesmead, is retiring at the next election. His claims represent one of the clearest cases so far of an MP profiting by “flipping” their expenses claims to a new second home.

U.S. Stirs a Hornet's Nest in Pakistan

Pakistan finally bowed to Washington's angry demands last week by unleashing its military against rebellious Pashtun tribesmen of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) -- collectively mislabelled "Taliban" in the West.

The Obama administration had threatened to stop $2 billion US annual cash payments to bankrupt Pakistan's political and military leadership and block $6.5 billion future aid, unless Islamabad sent its soldiers into Pakistan's turbulent NWFP along the Afghan frontier.

The result was a bloodbath: Some 1,000 "terrorists" killed (read: mostly civilians) and 1.2 million people -- most of Swat's population -- made refugees.

Bringing the war back home ...

BEFORE HE went on the rampage, John Russell was showing such obvious signs of combat-related stress that he should have been sent home from Iraq, according to military mental health professionals. The army sergeant, who killed five fellow soldiers at a clinic at Camp Liberty in Baghdad on Monday, was nearing the end of his third tour of duty. That he was still in a war zone despite his superiors knowing he was a threat to himself and others is a symptom of the institutional pressure to keep damaged men fighting.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The multiple deployments and stop-loss orders are taking their toll, and intelligent people understand this.

But the pressure the military feels to prevent people like Russell from leaving a war theatre, knowing full well that he should not be there (fingers crossed that he wouldn't unravel emotionally until he left active duty status), is very clear evidence that US's military misadventures have stressed many of our troops to well beyond the breaking point.

In order to achieve Obama's muscular, militarily-enforced foreign policy objectives, we may well see the re-institution of the draft on Obama's watch.

I wouldn't bet against that, at this point.

Among all the column inches devoted by the British press to this dual anniversary there was no mention of Birobidjan, the original Jewish homeland, whose 70th anniversary fell in 2004. Interviewed live on Press TV for a panel discussion of Israel's 60th birthday, Lady Renouf exposed the story of Birobidjan, illustrating the fraud inherent in the Zionist project.

Netanyahu 'to snub Obama in Washington'

Benjamin Netanyahu will refuse to support the formation of a Palestinian state in his first meeting with President Barack Obama, a source close to the Israeli prime minister says.

Giving Some Love to the Inquisition

Beyond the inhumanity of the Inquisition, there is the troubling fact that the torture tactics did "work" only in the sense that they extracted many false confessions and got victims to implicate other individuals who were, in turn, persecuted, tortured and put to death for their religious beliefs.

But Graham's praise for the efficacy of the Inquisition's torture tactics passed largely unnoticed -- and without any perceptible criticism -- in the American news media. The Washington Post article on the Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing didn't even mention Graham's extraordinary remark; a brief New York Times article about the hearing mentioned it only in passing.

Webmaster's Commentary:

OF COURSE, Graham would favor torture tactics, because it got Bush and Cheney precisely what they wanted; confessions to lies, based on torture, with which to "sell" the American people the war in Iraq.

And I am still pretty amazed at how quietly many Americans seem to be taking this news, when it has pretty much been smeared all over their faces, through recent revelations on the torture scandals.

Criminal Intent: Obama-Bashing=Mushroom Cloud, Says Prez Fans

I also learned that anyone who criticizes "our policy" in Pakistan is actually aiding and abetting the "possible deaths of millions of civilians" in that apparently inevitable nuclear war between India and the "nuclear-armed Taliban" that is apparently a "certainty" if we don't follow the new Leader. So who's the "war criminal" now, huh? The man with his hand on the throttle of a voracious war machine killing actual innocent human beings right now in reality -- or all of the stupid, crap-peddling, poo-flinging critics who are blithely unconcerned about the "possible deaths of millions of civilians" under far-fetched fantasies spun from Dick Cheney's paranoiac "One Percent Doctrine", now adapted to the righteous progressive cause?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unflipping believable, but this is precisely what has happened, courtesy of the Obamamanics who steadfastly affirm that this President is incapable of doing anything wrong.

I wonder what they will think if Obama reinstates the military draft on his watch.

Will they wake up, or will they continue to guzzle their industrial-strength, time-released "Koolaid", rendering them incapable of logical thinking?

Aipac's hidden persuaders

We in the US must be prepared to resist. We must protect ourselves from Israel's propaganda offensive ginning up war with Iran. We must encourage President Obama to stay strong in his commitment to Israeli-Arab peace, whether or not Israel is a willing partner. Keeping our eyes on the prize of peace is going to be the hardest challenge of all, because the Netanyahu government is doing everything it can to divert the world's attention.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, what this writer doesn't mention is that the US economy is in meltdown, and some power-brokers in Washington are counting on a war (any war) to get us out of our economic mess.

Quarrel on the Titanic

I was happy, and a sigh escaped me: “How wonderful this country could be, if only we had peace!”

I think of that moment every time I hear sad news from Ramallah. The news is depressing, but the memory helps me to keep alive my hope that things could be different.

The most depressing news concerns the split between the Palestinians themselves. This split is a disaster for them, and, I believe, also for Israel and the world at large. That’s why I dare to comment on a matter that seemingly does not concern us Israelis. It does.

It is easy to blame Israel. Easy and also justified. In their struggle against the national aspirations of the Palestinians, successive Israeli governments have applied the old Roman maxim divide et impera, divide and rule.

Deputy FM: Assad just wants peace process, not peace

Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon said Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad was only interested in conducting a peace process with Israel, instead of actually reaching a peace accord.

"The Syrian President fully realizes that the price of peace would be opening up to the West, which is a threat to the stability of his regime," said Ayalon during a lecture in Be'er Sheva.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Syria's alliance with Iran has been due to self-preservation, and a serious sense that the US and Israel cannot be trusted to keep their word.

And the really interesting "kicker" in the equation is the very real possibility that next month's election in Lebanon may well see Shiite Hezbollah candidates increase their influence in Lebanon's government, extending both Iran and Syria's regional sphere of influence.

If there is a sincere desire for peace in the region, both Israel - and the US - will need to offer far more carrots than sticks to Syria to begin any kind of serious rapprochement here.

Suffocated Al-Quds

Besieged by settlement blocs and strangled by a towering separation wall, Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) is suffocating under the Israeli occupation that aims at isolating the holy city from its Palestinian context and displacing its people.

“They want as few Arabs in Al-Quds as possibly,” Khalil Tufakji, an official of the Arab Cartography Department in Al-Quds, told IslamOnline.net.

“This is why they are trying to strangle Arab demography in Al-Quds by surrounding the Arab areas with Jewish colonies from all directions,” added Tufakji, a prominent expert on Jewish settlements schemes in the holy city.

SUNDAY’S LAFF ~~ AT THE ECONOMY

Webmaster's Commentary:

As a side note, I try to buy American but it keeps biting me in the rear. This morning my toaster, made in the USA and less than a year old (and with slots slightly SMALLER than the size of the bread slices that have become the norm in the local markets), quit working.

We cannot even make a toaster in this country any more? A TOASTER?!?

UPDATE: The company that makes this toaster has shut down their US factory and is now having their products made in China. It seems I purchased one of the last units to be made in the USA. As far as I can determine, there are no more toasters being made in the USA.

The USA cannot make anything any more, except trouble for the rest of the world.

Nuclear Weapons Spending Topped $52 Billion Last Year

According to a new report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (brought to my attention by Steven Aftergood), spending on US nuclear weapons infrastructure and related programs surpassed $52 billion in 2008. "That's a floor, not a ceiling," said study co-author Stephen Schwartz, who noted that the figure does not include costs associated with classified nuclear weapons or intelligence-related programs.

Webmaster's Commentary:

For all the talk about Iran's threat to the world, only one nation has ever actually used a nuclear weapon against the civilians of another country.

That nation is the United States.

ElBaradei: Israel strike on Iran would be 'insane'

"It would be completely insane to attack Iran," ElBaradei told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine. "That would turn the region into one big fireball, and the Iranians would immediately start building the bomb - and they could count on the support of the entire Islamic world."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Mohamed ElBaradei; just because such a strike would be insane is no reason to believe that Israel wouldn't do just that.

And Netanyahu appears to be willing to bet the farm that Israel will not be going it alone, if such a strike is to happen.

Hubris can be a deep psychological flaw, or a national characteristic of leadership.

Unfortunately for the people of Israel, in this case, it is the later.

However, there is one tiny factor I would like to hope the adults in the power-brokers' room in Tel Aviv and Washington are considering.

It's the 9,000 lb gorilla in the living room on this issue, siting on the Steinway.

And that is the following question: what will Russia do when it finds out that its 7th largest trading partner has been attacked, just sit and do nothing?

War with Russia, anyone?!?

Idealism can wait, but only a year

The two announcements – that he will seek to block publication of photos depicting US military personnel abusing prisoners, and will go ahead with revamped military tribunals to try Guantanamo detainees – may have reassured the right that this president is not in fact a weak, dewy-eyed crypto-socialist about to sell out the US to foreigners.

But the liberals who helped propel him to the White House are dismayed. Did we work so hard, they ask, merely to put another George W Bush in the Oval Office? Their suspicions will only have been increased by Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan. Even as America's commitment in Iraq is about to wind down, its new leader seems to be plunging deeper into another unwinnable war.

In the process, campaign promises are being torn up.

No Waterboarding Used in Questioning On Al-Qaeda Ties to Iraq, Officials Say

Senior intelligence officials yesterday acknowledged that two al-Qaeda operatives, Abu Zubaida and Khalid Sheik Mohammed, had been questioned about alleged links between al-Qaeda and Iraq when the two men underwent CIA interrogation in 2002 and 2003. But the officials denied that the questioning on Iraq had included waterboarding.

The U.S. to Raise Military Aid to Israel

According to the Israeli daily, Haaretz, the budget proposed to Congress for 2010 includes $2.775 billion in aid to Israel, compared to $2.5 billon budgeted for 2009. This is more than a 10% increase in total U.S. aid to Israel.

The budget also includes an increase in the assistance to the production of weapons systems, such as the missile Hetz-3.

Obama courts Israel with pact against Tehran

PRESIDENT Barack Obama hopes to tempt Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli leader, into making concessions to the Palestinians by holding out the prospect of a “grand alliance” of moderate Arab states against a nuclear Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The economic climate in this country is an absolute and complete meltdown, with no real end in sight.

There are those in Washington who are counting on a war (any war) as the only antidote. And were I a betting person, I wouldn't bet against the reinstitution of the draft in Obama's first term.

What we will see from the Washington meeting between Netanyahu and Obama will be completely superficial; the real deal-making has nothing to do with a "grand alliance" against Iran.

We may well see some kind of staged event in the US to be blamed on Iran(whose political leadership know it would be suicide to do such a thing), and we're off and running, attempting to "neutralize" another of Israel's existential threats - just like Iraq was supposed to be.

Scroll the map up to the area between Ramallah (North of Jerusalem) and Qalqilya (further north). Click on the box "Completed barrier." Now click the box just underneath "Under Construction".

Israel is already building a SECOND wall clearly designed to steal even more Palestinian lands.
