Illinois jobless rate rises to 9.1% Under Squirming Quinn as The Taxing Governor

The Chicago Tribune James P. Miller | Tribune reporter A worsening U.S. economy pushed Illinois joblessness half a percentage point higher in March, to 9.1 percent—a rate the state hasn't seen since November 1985.

The state's unemployment rate surpasses the nation's 8.5 percent , but Illinois remains below the levels of Michigan (at 12.0 percent) and a handful of others.

Stiglitz Says White House Ties to Wall Street Doom Bank Rescue

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama administration’s plan to fix the U.S. banking system is destined to fail because the programs have been designed to help Wall Street rather than create a viable financial system, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said.

"All the ingredients they have so far are weak, and there are several missing ingredients," Stiglitz said in an interview. The people who designed the plans are "either in the pocket of the banks or they’re incompetent."

Speaking of "in the pocket of the banks", from the NY Times: Government Sachs

Canada's RBC takes $850-million hit

The Toronto-based bank said the charge covers a write-down of goodwill, which "reflects the impact of prolonged challenging economic conditions." It said the charge in particular reflects declines in the U.S. economy, the U.S. housing market and the market value of U.S. banks.

Translation: they aren't bold enough to go after the government for a bailout. They know the Canadian taxpayers will hunt them down and string them up.

Obama consulted widely on memos

A former top official in the administration of President George W. Bush called the publication of the memos “unbelievable.”

“It's damaging because these are techniques that work, and by Obama's action today, we are telling the terrorists what they are,” the official said. “We have laid it all out for our enemies. This is totally unnecessary. … Publicizing the techniques does grave damage to our national security by ensuring they can never be used again — even in a ticking-time- bomb scenario where thousands or even millions of American lives are at stake."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Notice that this "official" is never, actually sourced, and apparently doesn't have the courage to let this country - and the world - know just how much he loved torture (at least, vicariously, which does say something about his mental state), and how thoroughly disappointed he is that the chances are this country may not do this again.

The US should never have tortured in the first place, period, end of discussion. We, the People of the United States of America, should never torture, because it is completely antithetical to those principals upon which this country was founded, and makes us criminal hypocrites in the eyes of the rest of the world.

And one small remark for this "unidentified official" to chew on for a moment. We have known, absolutely, and without doubt, from the times of the Inquisition, that torture doesn't produce the truth; it simply gets the tortured person to say whatever they think they need to say to get the torture to stop.

Desperate veterans turn to suicide

Several branches of the military are reporting significant spikes in the number of suicides committed by both active-duty troops and veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Experts are calling the number of military-related suicides sweeping the country an "epidemic."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Please make sure, if you know a young person, seriously contemplating joining the military, that they see this.

We can't know the mindset of these individuals, but perhaps one factor may stand out here.

It is, for many of these young men and women, the sure and certain realization that this time in history, the US is the bad guy in these wars of aggression.

And that's something that will never, ever go away.

Blind Amputee Has to Fight AIG for New Plastic Leg, Wheelchair

An Oklahoma man who lost an eye and a leg in Iraq says the giant insurance company AIG refused to provide him a new plastic leg and fought to keep from paying for a wheelchair or glasses for the eye in which he has 30 percent vision.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Your image, already mud in the eyes of most thinking Americans, has just sunk to the level of manure on this one.

Holocaust museum: Sunday's opening in Skokie to have powerful message of hope amid the horrors

Webmaster's Commentary:

Every Holocaust museum is a monument to people who REFUSED TO STAND UP AND DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST TYRANNY IN GOVERNMENT and instead demanded the rest of the world step in to protect them!

Every Holocaust museum is a testimonial to people who chose to remain silent and inactive even as their neighbors were being rounded up and sent to slave labor camps.

Every Holocaust Museum is a reminder of all the Jewish people who could have stood up to stop Hitler and decided not to.

Is that an ideal we want to teach our children in museums? To knuckle under, to go along, to bow, to obey, even when you know the leadership of the nation is on a dangerous and destructive path?

Israel demands money and unconditional support from the rest of the world with the claim that "we" let it happen. But in truth, isn't it the people who were there in Germany, closest to the crimes that bear the blame for allowing "it", whatever "it" really was, to happen?

Every Holocaust museum is an attempt to re-write history, to transfer the blame for one people's inaction and cowardice onto the rest of the world.

Where are the museums in every American city to the American soldiers who DID step in, often at loss of life, to stop Hitler from completing whatever his plans were?

Why are we not seeing Museums to them in every American city?

Are the lives of Americans somehow less important?

CBO Report Says Ethanol Drive Food Prices Higher

Even if you subtract the $0.45 federal subsidy for ethanol from the $1.62 price, resulting in a cost to wholesalers of $1.17, ethanol is still more expensive than gasoline on a per-Btu basis. Why? Ethanol contains just two-thirds of the heat energy of gasoline. Therefore to match the energy content of 1 gallon of gasoline, you need 1.33 gallons of ethanol. And the total cost of that fuel would be $1.55. ($1.17 * 1.33 = $1.556). That’s $0.14 more than the listed cost of gasoline.

Thus, the reality is that for buyers in Omaha and many other parts of the country, the real cost of ethanol remains higher than that of gasoline. Given that reality, it’s no wonder that companies like Aventine are going down the drain.

* Failing to break up zombie insolvent companies

* Slipping trillions of dollars into the hands of the richest and most powerful companies under the table

Man Detained As Terror Suspect For Photographing Police Car

Despite police claiming that an ambiguous section of the UK Counter Terrorism Act of 2008 would not outlaw taking photographs or film of police, a man was detained as a terror suspect this week simply for taking a photograph of a police car in order to document police misconduct.

62-year-old Malcolm Sleath, who is chairman of his local park society, saw a police car driving erratically down a North London park footpath, despite the fact that by law police are supposed to investigate on foot in such circumstances.

Town halls are routinely using controversial 'Big Brother' surveillance powers to spy on their own employees in the workplace, a survey has revealed.

Council bosses are sanctioning bugging and secret CCTV operations to gather evidence of workplace theft or even 'inappropriate relationships'.

Privacy campaigners called the tactics 'disgusting' and said they 'would make the KGB nervous'.

Officials Say U.S. Wiretaps Exceeded Law

The National Security Agency intercepted private e-mail messages and phone calls of Americans in recent months on a scale that went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress last year, government officials said in recent interviews.

Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in “overcollection” of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional.

Holocaust denier guilty of contempt

The former president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Jeremy Jones, launched a civil action against Frederick Toben after he published claims on the Adelaide Institute's website that the holocaust never happened.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that the defenders of the orthodoxy never EVER suggest having an open debate where both sides present their evidence before the public. The strategy continues to be to use the courts, rather than science, to make sure that one and only one point of view is ever allowed to be seen.

Sales of Guns and Ammo are Shooting Up

Purchases of guns and ammunition are surging across the country. Nearly four million background checks -- a key measure of sales because they are required at the purchase of a gun from a federally licensed seller -- were performed in the first three months of 2009. That is a 27% increase over the same period a year earlier, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

No one knows exactly what is behind the gun-buying craze. Some buyers say they are stocking up for themselves in anticipation of new gun-control laws, while others say they're worried about deteriorating public safety as the economy worsens.

Richard Armitage, the former deputy secretary of state, told Al Jazeera English television in an interview airing Wednesday that waterboarding is torture

(*Violins please?)"I hope, had I known about it at the time I was serving, I would've had the courage to resign. But I don't know. It's in hindsight now," Armitage said in the interview.

Is America the new Russia?

s the US Russia? The question seems provocative, if not outrageous. Yet the person asking it is Simon Johnson, former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund and a professor at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In an article in the May issue of the Atlantic Monthly, Prof Johnson compares the hold of the “financial oligarchy” over US policy with that of business elites in emerging countries. Do such comparisons make sense? The answer is Yes, but only up to a point.

Jerome Hauer and Jack Bauer

I have often thought how fortunate for the creator of the hit Fox action TV show "24" that they picked November of 200l to air the first show. Think of it! This was a TV show that mirrored the times so perfectly. Jack Bauer belonged to an illusive counter-terrorist unit that went out and did things that most elected officials wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. He got to torture Muslim terrorist, for example. He knew the enemies: Muslims, Chinese, and Russians. Jerome Hauer also worked for a kind of counter-terrorist unit, Kroll Associates. Now Jerome is working for Homeland Security and he is worried about a bioterrorist attack. Jack Bauer is worried about a bioterrorist attack too. Does anyone think that Jack Bauer might be the action hero side of Jerome Hauer.

State Sovereignty Movement Keeps Growing

As more governors declare their opposition to the Stimulus Bill — which is now estimated to include more than $1 trillion in unfunded mandates for the states above and beyond the initial $800 billion cost — more and more state legislators across the nation have been introducing bills to assert state sovereignty under the 10th Amendment in an effort to assert the rights of their citizens and the authoirity of state governments against unwarranted interference by the federal government.

Current Economic And Political Climate Fueling Resurgence In Radicalization And Recruitment

I've said time and time again that the government (think Eric Holder's hate speech) is trying to fan the flames of a race war in this country. And they are trying to set it up so that they can blame peoples' rebellion on the fact that Obama is (half) black and not the fact that the government, under Bush and now Obama, has stepped up its totalitarian, Communist, Fascist, Socialist agenda faster than ever.

Win 7: Looks to be Vista disaster, Take 2

InformationWeek has been given a first-look at data collected by KACE from over 1100 sources regarding corporate uptake of Windows 7 after it's released later this year. According to their stats, 83% of businesses will not be upgrading to Windows 7 until at least 2011, making the Windows 7 launch quite possibly a Vista Take 2 under additional declines in OS market share.

The failure of corporations to migrate to Windows 7 raises additional concerns over Microsoft's slipping OS market share as Vista sales have declined 8% in the most recent quarter, and Linux is reaping the benefits.

The police should take note: little brother's watching you

The assault on Tomlinson will not spark off a riot, but nobody should underestimate the outrage it has generated. And from the instant the video footage - shot by an American bystander using his digital still camera - appeared on the Guardian website, it was clear that we had reached a pivotal moment. Consumer technology had given citizens a serious tool for recording how policemen behave.
