"Our public credit is good, but the abundance of paper has produced a spirit of gambling in the funds, which has laid up our ships at the wharves as too slow instruments of profit, and has even disarmed the hand of the tailor of his needle and thimble. They say the evil will cure itself. I wish it may; but I have rarely seen a gamester cured, even by the disasters of his vocation." -- Thomas Jefferson to Gouverneur Morris, 1791.

Firearms Confiscation: Survey Given to U.S. Marines

The following survey was given to U.S. Marines at the 29 Palms Marine Corps base in California: DD Form 3206 (Rev 2/96)

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is actually from back in 1994, and the reason I am linking it is that while I was still running a small animation shop in North Hollywood we had a graphics designer (now with Warner's I believe) who had been a marine at 29 Palms when this survey was given, and he shared with me that his fellow marines wrote down that they would be willing to confiscate guns from civilians not because they really felt that way but because it was so obvious that was the answer the officers wanted.

Google Earth reveals secret history of US base in Pakistan

The US was secretly flying unmanned drones from the Shamsi airbase in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan as early as 2006, according to an image of the base from Google Earth.

The image — that is no longer on the site but which was obtained by The News, Pakistan's English language daily newspaper — shows what appear to be three Predator drones outside a hangar at the end of the runway. The Times also obtained a copy of the image, whose co-ordinates confirm that it is the Shamsi airfield, also known as Bandari, about 200 miles southwest of the Pakistani city of Quetta.

Trader Buzz on the Government's Plan

The trading floor buzz on whether the government's plan to save the economy will actually help the markets, with Jason Roney, Sharmac Capital; Wilbur Ross Jr., WL Ross & Co. and CNBC's Rick Santelli

Webmaster's Commentary:

The problem is that our government and corporate culture consists of lawyers and accountants, so they are trying to solve the problem by bookkeeping tricks and making more laws. But the video hit the point on the head, even with all the rate changes and such, people cannot afford to pay their mortgages any more BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT GAVE HUGE TAX BREAKS TO CORPORATIONS TO ENCOURAGE SENDING HIGH-PAYING MANUFACTURING JOBS TO OTHER COUNTRIES.

We are a nation that imports products far in excess of our exports. Playing with the numbers cannot change that.

and telling young people who went into debt to obtain college degrees that they have to fill in holes in the roads to eat for the next year is going to be a tough sell.

People do not want anything new. They want what they had before, no more and no less. They want the government to bring back what was lost through reckless and selfish fiscal policy.

We pay taxes to the government to make out lives better. In that regard the government has failed utterly.

Joel Kovel accuses Bard of firing him for his anti-Zionist scholarship

At stake for both of the program’s biggest supporters, Al Quds president Sari Nusseibeh and Bard president Leon Botstein, is nothing less than the future of a Palestinian state, and a critically skilled student population to support such a state. Such a move to work together undoubtedly will cause great consternation among extremists on either side, but it also reflects an increasingly popular Israeli view that supporting the creation of a Palestinian state is the only way to ensure a Jewish future for Israel. (The interest for Palestinians is self-evident.)

Some forensic techniques named as suspect in National Academy of Sciences report

In some cases, innocent people may have been imprisoned, even put to death.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is why the death penalty must be abolished. When the state wrongly imprisons someone, they can be released when the state realizes an error has been made. But once you kill someone based on flawed evidence (like Bruno Richard Hauptman), how do you make amends to that wrongfully executed person?

The fact is that the state is fallible, and even the much-vaunted neutron activation analysis used as the sole evidence that Lee Oswald fired all the bullets in Dealey Plaza on November 22nd, 1963 has been discarded as unreliable.

The truth is "hate speech" only to those who have something to hide

Israel's supporters constantly spin any criticism of Israel's actions as hate against the Jewish people. Indeed so desperate are Israel's supporters to dismiss criticism of Israel while being unable to refute the actual facts that they have taken to describing Jewish critics of Israel as "self-hating Jews."

Webmaster's Commentary:

I decided to relink this one because Israel's supporters are once again screaming "Anti-Semite" at every mention of the war crimes committed in Gaza.

This is, of course, silly. One cannot dismiss criticism of Israel's actions by claiming the critics hate Jews any more than one can dismiss criticism of Nazi Germany's actions by claiming the critics hate Germans. Only a compliant corporate media suggests that what is absurd in the case of Hitler somehow makes sense in the case of Olmert.

Breandon Neely, who was a guard at Guantanamo when it first opened in 2002, has recently come forward to dispute those claims.

Neely went on to recount an incident which he has previously described in his testimony for the Guantánamo Testimonials Project of the University of California at Davis as "something that I am very ashamed of."

Webmaster's Commentary:

What puzzles me is that humankind has known, from the time of the inquisition, that torture doesn't get you the truth: it gets the person being tortured to admit to anything to get the torture to stop.

So what is the dynamic of what went on here? Simply put, people in power were able to sadistically injure and humiliate by proxy ,and smugly believed that they would never, ever have to face the consequences.

Every member of the Bush administration involved with ordering and approving torture should be at the Hague for war crimes trials.

However, that is just about as likely to happen as for pigs to fly.

But unless, and until, this happens, the United States will remain quite a different country from the country in which we grew up, one in which the use of torture as an instrument of interrogation is accepted, and has become the norm.

That moment, from the White House on down, when torture became "normalized was the moment this government lost any credentials as a moral leadership for either its citizens or the world.

And do you think for one moment the US government isn't going to do this to American citizens, naturalized or otherwise, if they think they can get away with it?!?

Better think again.

What Does Holocaust Denial Really Mean?

Are these revisionist contentions so odious as to cause those who believe them to be reviled, beaten, and imprisoned? More importantly, is it possible that revisionist contentions are true, or even partially true, and that they are despised because they contradict the story of the Holocaust, a story which has been elevated to the level of a religion in hundreds of films, memorials, museums, and docu-dramas?

Is it sacrilegious to ask, “If Hitler was intent on extermination, how did Elie Wiesel, his father, and two of his sisters survive the worst period of incarceration at Auschwitz?” Wiesel claims that people were thrown alive into burning pits, yet even the Israeli-trained guides at Auschwitz refute this claim.

In the analysis of the Fed balance sheet and the condition of the dollar, another detail is extremely important. The equity ratio in the Fed balance has fallen from about 4.5 to 2%.

This figure implies an increase of the Fed's leverage from 22 to 50. As we have seen there are large new positions of dubious quality on the Federal Reserve balance sheet. More specifically, should only 2% of the Fed's assets go into default — or if there is a loss in value of 2% — the Fed becomes insolvent.

Massachusetts may consider a mileage charge

A tentative plan to overhaul Massachusetts' transportation system by using GPS chips to charge motorists a quarter-cent for every mile behind the wheel has angered some drivers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

To be followed by coin boxes on your home toilet, no doubt.

And don't buy that crap about a substitute for the gas tax. They will wind up "needing" to keep both.

Israel lurches into fascism

This has never been true, and makes even less sense as Israeli parties begin coalition talks after Tuesday's election. Yes, the "peace camp" helped launch the "peace process," but it did much more to undermine the chances for a just settlement.

U.S. soldiers exposed to toxins at site KBR knew was contaminated, senators say

As two U.S. senators Wednesday were saying more soldiers than previously reported have been exposed to a toxic carcinogen in Iraq, the Oregon National Guard Wednesday sent out letters to 433 soldiers to tell them they may be among those affected.

The chemical is hexavalent chromium, which has figured into some OSHA settlements.

It is also the same toxin infamously found in elevated levels of groundwater in the town of Hinkley, Calif. in 1991, sending a then-unknown law firm file clerk named Erin Brockovich on a now-famous fight on behalf of residents against the utility behind the chemical's presence. The result was the largest tort settlement in U.S. history, $333 million, in 1996.

Consumers Cut Food Spending Sharply

Consumers have cut back sharply on food spending, shunning restaurants, opting for generic products over brand names, trading in lattes for home-brewed coffee and shopping for bargains. That is hurting sales and profits at many food processors, grocery chains and restaurants.

First Video of Fabricating Holocaust Author Defending Self

ABC confirms that Herman Rosenblat, the notorious fabricator behind Holocaust memoir Angels at the Fence, will appear on Good Morning America tomorrow.

Rosenblat is a genuine Holocaust survivor. So perhaps he'll have some luck attempting a redemption less than two months after he was exposed (Even macho James Frey waited a couple of years.) And maybe he'll be able to somehow sell the rather bold and hard-to-believe story he outlines in the YouTube video: that his wife told him she tossed apples over the fence at some boy in some concentration camp, and that Rosenblat convinced himself he was the boy, even though he was not.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It amazes me that the media is giving this hoaxer a forum to try to re-sell this fraud to the world, while British authors are being held incommunicado in a Santa Ana, California jail for pointing out that some of these hoaxes ARE hoaxes!!!!!!!!!
