Economist Tim Madden: The PIIGS Brief: understanding how oligarchs rig, loot our economies

*hyperlinks live at source*

Tim Madden is an economist with expertise on credit and banking. Tim and I are colleagues in lobbying government for public banking, with concentration in the US for state-owned banks (and here). The good news is that structural solutions to our economic controlled demolition are obvious and simple; and explained beautifully by many of America’s brightest historical minds. The bad news is that we’re still mired in oligarchic looting of our economies.

Palin And The Religious Right: A Trojan Horse In The GOP

With failing numbers, damaged credibility, waning political influence and the lack of any platform, conservatives have left a vacuum in their own party to be exploited. The voice of conservative Independents, Republicans and Libertarians has been stolen. Political ideology has been infused with fundamentalist religious theology with the hope of garnering additional votes. The result has been internal division, further loss of credibility, and the abdication of responsible political discourse. The productive and necessary views and desires of non-religious libertarians and conservatives have been silenced in favour of the media friendly, accidentally-comic hyperbole of the entertainingly ridiculous rhetoric of Palin, Beck, et al.

FLASHBACK - Bomb-Making Factory Found in Brooklyn

A Jewish Brooklyn man has pleaded not guilty to charges of anti-Semitic hate crimes. Police arrested Ivan Ivanov Monday after discovering pipe bombs and other weapons at his home. Ivanov, who had long been suspected of a September spree of spray-painting anti-Semitic graffiti on houses, cars, playgrounds and two synagogues in his Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, implicated himself in the graffiti incidents during a search of his home Sunday and was arrested....

The New York Times reported that Ivanov told police that he was Italian by birth, raised in Bulgaria and trained by the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency.

The 72 Virgins Myth

It seems to be the staple ammunition for attacking Islam. Mention the atrocities and suicide bombings that are being committed by Muslims around the world and you get the same response – they are doing it for the “virgins in heaven”.

In various Internet forums and conventional media, Muhammad has been accused of luring foot soldiers, past and present, with promise of eternal copulation in the afterlife. In the process Islam has been tainted with a dubiously sexual tint. Islam seems to be the path where sex-hungry young men can end their lives into a promise of endless erotica.

The simple truth is, there is nothing in the Quran or Hadith that has ever promised this. Every Muslim knows it.

A Frightful Despotism

President Washington was opposed to political parties. He saw a sinister nature to partisanship. Washington feared the perpetuation of “the most horrid enormities” as the factions battled bitterly for domination, competition, and vengeance while ignoring what was best for the nation.

He feared that the Party would become the sum and the whole, and surveying our current landscape I would argue his skepticism wasn’t unfounded.

Obama Administration Continues to Supply Israel with Advanced Weapons

I have repeatedly pointed out that as of now the Obama Administration has never put any material pressure on Israel. There are wild rumors and irresponsible materials floating around to the contrary. They aren't true.

In fact, the United States is equipping Israel with GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs for its F-15I fighter-bombers and this will be followed by the same system on F-16I planes. These 250-pound bombs are called bunker busters because they are smart bombs that will go through more than six feet of reinforced concrete.

Afghanistan's My Lai Massacre

here was, however, a massacre recently that was not a mistake - a massacre, which, while it only involved fewer than a dozen innocent people, bears the same stench as My Lai. It was the execution-style slaying of eight handcuffed students, aged 11-18, and a 12-year-old neighboring shepherd boy who had been visiting the others in Kunar Province on December 26.

Sadly, no principled soldier with a conscience like pilot Thompson tried to save these children. No observer had the guts of a Bernhardt to report what he had seen. No Ridenhour among the other serving US troops in Afghanistan has investigated this atrocity or reported it to Congress. And no American reporter has investigated this war crime the way Hersh investigated My Lai.

Russia and the Central Asian Drug Trade: The Role of Kyrgyztan

A drug trafficking campaign is being conducted against Russia on a broad scale affecting all spheres of its political, social and economic life. Kyrgyzstan plays an important role in this campaign. There are ten main routes of heroin traffic from Afghanistan (occupied by the US forces) with six of them crossing the Kyrgyz city of Osh, an important hub of Afghan drug traffic.

On April 1, 2010, during a special operation in the city of Osh to detain a drug suspect, the agents of the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry confiscated more than 160 packages of Afghan hashish (about 107, 8 kg) and 24.4 kg of heroin. That was a serious blow to the drug mafia, so a few days later, on the night of April 6th, the country saw a people’s uprising, and a coup.

The Militarization of Outer Space: The Pentagon's "Space Warriors"

It's not as if things aren't bad enough right here on planet earth.

What with multiple wars and occupations, an accelerating economic meltdown, corporate malfeasance and environmental catastrophes such as the petroleum-fueled apocalypse in the Gulf of Mexico, I'd say we have a full plate already.

Back in 2005, The New York Times reported that General Lance W. Lord, then commander of AFSPC, told an Air Force conference that "space superiority is not our birthright, but it is our destiny. ... Space superiority is our day-to-day mission. Space supremacy is our vision for the future."

Five years on, that "mission" is still a top priority for the Obama administration. While some might call it "net-centric warfare" on steroids, I'd choose another word: madness.

Raw milk battle reveals FDA abandonment of basic human right to choose your food

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF), an organization whose mission includes “defending the rights and broadening the freedoms of family farms and protecting consumer access to raw milk and nutrient dense foods”, recently filed a lawsuit against the FDA for its ban on interstate sales of raw milk. The suit alleges that such a restriction is a direct violation of the United States Constitution. Nevertheless, the suit led to a surprisingly cold response from the FDA about its views on food freedom (and freedoms in general).

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are few freedoms more fundamental than the freedom to make informed decisions about what you, and your family, eat.

The more you know about where that food comes from, and the kids of processes to which it has been subjected (or not), the more intelligent decisions you can make about just what food you're bringing home to feed to your family.

Having that choice taken away from you, where "frankenfoods" are deemed "good for you", because they fatten the coffers of industrial food makers,, but raw, natural foods are somehow "bad", is one of the most draconian, stupid policies the FDA could possibly embrace.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander, as they say. Ron Paul: Euro Bailout Will Lead To Currency Collapse

As Europe is bailed out to the tune of nearly $1 trillion dollars, Congressman Ron Paul warns that the constant monetization of debt, allied with taxpayer-funded bailouts, will inevitably lead to runaway inflation and the collapse of paper currencies.

Under the terms of the Federal Reserve’s credit swap deal with the EU – in addition to an additional IMF bailout of which U.S. taxpayers will be picking up 20 per cent ($57 billion dollars) of the tab, Paul pointed out that not just taxpayers but “anybody that buys anything” will be funding the European bailout because of the attendant inflationary consequences.

CLIMATEGATE - The World Turned Upside Down

Climate change is the hot topic of the day, and Phillips methodically charts the rise of the "movement." A core problem is that science has given way to ideology. The scientific method has been dispensed with -- or abused -- to serve the myth of anthropogenic (man-made) warming (AGW). There is more than a taint of ideology involved: Many of the advocates of AGW view the Western world and its way of living as the culprits. Computer models are built in an almost backwards fashion: The goal is to show evidence of AGW, and the "scientists" go to work to produce such a result. When even these models fail to show what advocates want, the data and interpretations are "fudged" to bring about the desired result.

Israel's fated bleak future

The most likely outcome is that Greater Israel will become a full-fledged apartheid state. There are already separate laws, separate roads and separate housing in the occupied territories, and the Palestinians are essentially confined to impoverished enclaves. Indeed, two former Israeli prime ministers — Ehud Barak and Olmert — have made just this point. Olmert said that if the two-state solution collapses, Israel will face a "South African-style struggle." He went so far as to argue, "as soon as that happens, the state of Israel is finished."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mearsheimer is, unfortunately, incorrect in his assessment that "...A Jewish apartheid state is not sustainable over the long term. The discrimination and repression that underpin apartheid are antithetical to core Western values. How could anyone make a moral case for it in the United States, where democracy is venerated and segregation and racism are routinely condemned?"

He has obviously forgotten that the US has traditionally overlooked governments' cruelty and repression of their own people as long as that government is the "US's thug" in the region, and Israel, a nuclear armed country in the Middle East, will certainly be tolerated as a member of this club.

Nothing will happen, and the fate of Palestinians will be left to the mercy of an Israel which would love to see them all exterminated.

Intel officials: US missiles kill 10 in Pakistan

Suspected U.S. missiles killed 10 people in a militant-controlled region close to the Afghan border Sunday, the first such strike since an alleged Pakistani-trained extremist was accused of a failed Times Square attack.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The reason the US Government is trying to hard to create a link between the Times Square "Bandini Bomber" and Pakistan is to obscure the fact that up until now, the US has been killing large numbers of civilians with their robotic drones and in most cases, missing the intended targets entirely. By creating a pretext to portray Pakistan as a whole as the "enemy", the US Government hopes to regain the illusion of moral rightness in its continuing attacks on Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan says they have found no evidence to support the US story that the Bandini Bomber is working for the Taliban or anyone else in Pakistan, which means we have another "Saddam's Nooks" hoax on our hands!

Israel primed for war on Iran: Netanyahu deputy

Israel is primed for a war on Iran, a deputy to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday, in a rare break with his government's reticence as world powers try to talk Tehran into curbing its nuclear plans.

"There is no doubt, looking at the overall situation, that we are already in a military confrontation with Iran," he said. "Iran is the main motivator of those attacking us."

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Israel is hell-bent on attacking Iran, the problem is that they can certainly start a military assault, but all the wargaming has indicated that they cannot finish it without US military help, meaning that the US will dragged into this war.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And because the US and the world have proven themselves pathologically impotent in dealing with Israel by speaking the only language they understand (a complete, immediate cessation of all financial and military aid to Israel), what we are about to witness is the following: a brisk Israeli annexation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, coupled with massive forced expulsion of all Palestinians left standing into Gaza.

U.S. Debt Shock May Hit In 2018, Maybe As Soon As 2013: Moody's

Spiraling debt is Uncle Sam's shock collar, and its jolt may await like an invisible pet fence.

"Nobody knows when you bump up against the limit, but you know when it happens it will really hurt," said fiscal watchdog Maya MacGuineas of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

The great uncertainty about how much debt is too much has tended to make fiscal discipline seem less urgent, rather than more. There is no obvious threshold beyond which investors will demand higher real yields for holding U.S. debt. Vague warnings from ratings agencies about the loss of America's 'AAA' status haven't added much clarity — until recently.

A hacker will tell you that they are serving a purpose by identifying the weak links in your system. A trader will tell you they deserve the pennies they are making on the trade because they provide liquidity to the market.

I Told You! On Rachel Corrie’s Assassin

When the The Cross of Bethlehem was in the last stages of its publication, someone in the team expressed concern about my statement in the book that the Terror State of Israel knows the identity of Rachel Corrie’s assassin and is protecting him. The issue is simple; you can’t move a vehicle in the IDF service– not even a D-9 bulldozer – without filling a form, having it signed by an officer, and leaving a copy of it at the military base of departure. The form contains also the list of passengers – including the driver – and is sacred because it allows identifying the victims if the vehicle goes missing in action or suffers an accident. I stood firm on the issue.

Deep cuts likely in updated state budget

The state budget crisis has been quiet for the past few months but will return to center stage this week as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger prepares to belt out some bad news.

The governor is scheduled to release an updated budget plan Friday that will probably include even deeper cuts than those he proposed in January, when he called for reductions in health and human services, prisons, education and state worker pay, among other areas.

U.S. Special Forces Slaughter Family In Afghanistan, Attempt Cover-Up

On Feb. 12, a family in Khataba, Afghanistan, held a party to celebrate the birth of a baby boy. Just hours after they went to sleep, U.S. Army Special Forces assaulted the house. They kicked down the door, rushed to the roof and began shooting at everybody below.

The site that had so recently been a scene of dancing and celebration was now a pile of bodies and a river of blood.

Emperor Hickel: The Man Who Invented Alaska ... and Sarah Palin

By Greg Palast

Wally Hickel invented Alaska and told me he regretted it. He also invented Sarah Palin, and I was hoping, when I travel to Alaska next month, to ask him whether he also regretted that second creation.

Hickel wanted to be President; of what nation, well, that changed. First, he wanted to be President of the United States. That required that his home, Alaska, become united with the States, a task he accomplished in 1959 with the help of his buddy, and later enemy, Richard Nixon.

"That was a mistake," he said, referring to US Statehood. "We should have been our own nation," which, I pointed out, would have made him President instead of Governor.

A Concurrence In The Case Against Elena Kagan

Last week Glenn Greenwald penned a solid case delineating why current Solicitor General Elena Kagan, who is at the top of the purported Obama “short list”, would make a poor nominee to replace the retiring Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court. Despite the hard truth in Greenwald’s facts and arguments, he has been blistered by both the Obama Administration and their apologists and fanboys. The Administration has, as reported by Sam Stein, even enlisted a hit team of loyalist flaks and supporters to discredit Greenwald and his article.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Glenn Greenwald has been attacked for making the case against Elena Kagan as a nominee for the Supreme Court on policy and ideology grounds. But neither Greenwald nor the Kagan supporters have addressed the fact Kagan would be effectively the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have had no experience whatsoever in court as either an attorney or judge, a critical deficiency in her already thin background.

Obama appears to have nominated Kagen for no other reason than she supports indefinite detentions without trial, and of course, she is linked to Goldman Sachs.

Scientists Speak Out Against Climate Change Deniers' McCarthy-Like Threats

In a letter published in the journal Science, more than 250 members of the US National Academy of Sciences, including 11 Nobel Prize laureates, condemned the increase in "political assaults" on scientists who argue greenhouse gas emissions are warming the planet.

The 'climategate' scandal and mistakes by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have led to a surge in attacks on climate scientists around the world.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"They are being mean to us, mommy!!!"

The global warming cult, unable to support their hysterical claims, is trying to pull the debate out of science and turn it into a political one, in that we should all go along with AGW and carbon taxes because it is the "polite" thing to do!

Yet another pathetic attempt to dismiss the Tea Party as "racist."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The "tea" in Tea Party stands for "Taxed Enough Already" and high taxes know no racial bounds. We are all taxed way too high, to the point where the entire economy is grinding to a halt before our eyes. The looters and pillagers are desperate to grab those last few coins from your pockets before they leave, so they are attacking the one group that represents taxpayers of all races by claiming it is racist.

41 percent of Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area single-family homes believed 'underwater'

More tough news for Twin Cities metro homeowners surfaced this morning as home values in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area slid 4.6 percent in March from a year ago.

More troubling, the real estate website Zillow.com calculates that more than 268,000 Twin Cities area single-family homeowners with mortgages owe more than their homes are worth. That number is about 41.2 percent of the total. That compares with an estimated national average of 23.3 percent of single-family mortgages with negative equity, according to the report.

Early Christianity and the Hazard of Soap

Early Christianity and the Hazard of Soap
Greeks and Romans were known for public baths, and many other cultures on the planet also believed in being clean, and still do. However, the expression 'Cleanliness is next to Godliness' is nowhere to be found in the entire Christian Canon of Scripture, including the apocryphal / pseudo-epigraphical texts. There must be a reason for this.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This avoidance of hygiene on religious grounds is what made Europe a fertile ground for the spread of the Black Plague. It is an interesting irony that a cure for the plague and the knowledge that the disease was carried by fleas goes back to the time of Imhotep in ancient Egypt. A copy of Imhotep's medical text existed at the Library of Alexandria, but was lost when Christians burned the library.

How dare they pass a politically incorrect bill that would actually help protect our borders and allow Arizona law enforcement agencies to, well, enforce the law...

State revenues fall again after one-month reprieve

Gov. Sonny Perdue's office said Friday that tax collections in April were down 4.2 percent from April 2009, a return to negative numbers after March's reprieve. March ended a 15-month skid of revenue declines with a 1 percent gain.

Double dip in housing values continues, despite tax credit/spring bump

The home buyer tax credit may have sparked a surge in sales before it expired on April 30th.

But in the first quarter, Greater Boston home values continued a slide that began last fall, Zillow.com contends in its latest quarterly report.

And if present trends continue, local home values could sink below their 2009 low point, the report suggests. And, as I note below, that moment may come faster than you think.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Worse, bribing people to buy homes with a tax credit may look good for an election year, but if the economy continu7es to decline,m as all signs indicate, then these newly purchased homes are headed for foreclosure down the road.

Sex, Lies and Oil Spills

A common spin in the right wing coverage of BP's oil spill is a gleeful suggestion that the gulf blowout is Obama's Katrina.

In truth, culpability for the disaster can more accurately be laid at the Bush Administration's doorstep. For eight years, George Bush's presidency infected the oil industry's oversight agency, the Minerals Management Service, with a septic culture of corruption from which it has yet to recover. Oil patch alumnae in the White House encouraged agency personnel to engineer weakened safeguards that directly contributed to the gulf catastrophe.

Jeremy Scahill is a Douche Bag

Once the truth comes out about 9-11, people are going to eventually start asking why all our “serious” investigative journalists like… Jeremy Scahill… missed something so goddamned obvious.

Not only did they miss it, they made up shit to attack people who were actually trying to investigate it; trying to tell people.

So one day, when this does all come out, after all the confessions and the accusations and the trials, one day the attention of the angry population will eventually turn to our “serious” investigative journalists like Goodman, like Taibbi, like … Scahill…

… and they will be asked to account for how they chose their careers and their “respectability” over the Truth. A truth I know they feel in their hearts.

Are Cops More Criminal Than Criminals?

Until we get a president and congress that will do their jobs and take back control of "our" intelligence services, from the foreign and private International Monetary/ Banking Cartel, the US government will continue to force on us a police state as tyrannical as was those of communistic Russia or Nazi Germany.

Instead, "our leaders" consider every American to be a potential terrorist, while these very same leaders terrorize us with warrantless spying of our emails, postal mail, telephone calls. They beat us, taser us, and falsely arrest us, while pretending to protect us from the very terrorists they've created.

And, unless more of us wake up to the tyranny afoot, we the American people are, indeed, the problem.

Humorous Look at Fake War on Terror

How many terrorists are there in the US?

Hard to say. Based on their level of activity (and lack of sophistication) not very many.

Meanwhile, there are many, many thousands of people in the US terrorism industry - tracking "terrorists," talking and writing about terrorists, supposedly protecting us against terrorists, and, yes, posing as terrorists.

My off-hand guess: For every real terrorist in the US, there are 1,000 or more on the federal payroll pretending to be one.

Your tax dollars are work.

A Mother's Nightmare: Oregon Judge Holds Canadian Child Without Cause

Bonnie King Salem-News.com

“You can't imagine the pain of not being able to hold your child on Mother's Day, knowing that you may never be able to hold him again.”

(SALEM / CALGARY) - Noah KirkmanSome stories are so far-fetched, so incredible, that they are hard to believe at first look, even though they ring of truth. The arduous journey of 12-year old Noah Kirkman is one such story. An unfinished story.

Almost two years ago, he came to Oregon to spend the summer with his stepfather, John Kirkman. Less than three months later, DHS took the boy into custody, and, four foster homes later, he still hasn’t been allowed to go home to Canada.

With ‘ Hat In Hand ‘ : American Serfdom

A scene in Claude Berri’s fine 1993 film Germinal captures the essence of it all. French coal miners, circa 1880s, are enduring bleak conditions. They have no union, so a group of them ask to speak to the mine owner at his manor house. This one scene reveals the extent of a certain mindset of that day , and of now . The workers enter the study of the boss. He is seated at his desk as the group enters. They take their hats off and, to a man, seem to lower their heads in his presence. Ce le vie!
