Mark to Market Madness … Geithner Plan Shenanigans … the Economy … and More

Mark to Market Accounting Mess Shows That
Congress, Bankers Just Don’t Get It …

This week, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) caved on the mark-to-market accounting front. Members of the board agreed to give financial institutions more flexibility in valuing assets, including the “toxic” ones that have given investors so much agita.

You could see this coming a mile away because Congress has essentially been browbeating the group into submission. Recent hearings and commentary from legislators made it clear that if FASB didn’t kowtow to the banking lobby and amend mark-to-market standards, Congress would find a way to make it happen.

Caterpillar Announces Plans For Greater Share Of The Ethnic Cleansing Market In Apartheid Israel!

Although many have been concerned about the recent right wing shift in Israel's leadership, Caterpillar Tractor's CEO, J.W Owens, is not one of them. Owens told UPI that he has all the confidence in the world that the next Apartheid regime will be just as murderous and committed to ethnic cleansing as the last, if not more so. Owens added, Caterpillar is prepared for this opportunity with a full array of ethnic cleansing products and has enhanced many of it existing product lines.

About a dozen black-and-white pictures published Thursday on www.life.com include scenes of King’s associates meeting solemnly in the civil rights leader’s motel room, standing on the balcony where he stood for the last time, and workers cleaning the last of the blood.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that this photo spread is still pushing the claim that the shot that killed Dr. King came from a rooming house at 422 South Main Street where James Earl Ray was staying, waiting for "Roul".

But as can be seen in this report, the bullet that killed Dr. King actually came from a different direction.

The Death Of Martin Luther King

July 11, 1997
Web posted at: 11:47 a.m. EDT (1547 GMT)

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (CNN) -- Markings on some of the test bullets fired from the rifle believed used in the killing of Martin Luther King Jr. do not match the markings on the bullet that killed King, according to an affidavit filed by confessed killer James Earl Ray's attorneys.

The results of bullet tests, conducted in May, were read in court by Judge Joseph Brown .

Lawyers for Ray, who sought the tests in a bid to prove his innocence, are asking Brown to approve additional tests on Ray's .30-06 hunting rifle .

Webmaster's Commentary:

The FBI claimed that the gun had not been properly cleaned for the test firings and demanded they be allowed to retest, then simply stalled carrying out the new tests until James Earl Ray died in prison. At that point, legal efforts to get at the truth of Martin Luther King's assassination were thrown out of court for "lack of standing."

As for the rifle claimed to have been James Earl Ray's, the marks left on the test bullets were caused by a manufacturing defect, and would have had to have been on all bullets fired previously by that same rifle. Since those marks did not appear on the bullet that killed Dr. King, Ray was indeed innocent. There was no evidence that ever linked him to the murder. He was jailed on the basis of a confession suggested by his conveniently court-appointed lawyer; a confession James immediately retracted to no avail.

The official story is that these men are pointing at the bathroom window in the rear of the rooming house from which James Earl Ray is supposed to have fired a gunshot.

Ward Churchill Wins Lawsuit

A jury ruled Thursday that the University of Colorado wrongly fired the professor who compared some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi, giving him only $1 in damages but a chance to get his job back.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is easy to support the First Amendment when someone says something you agree with.

The real test of principle comes when someone says something you do not agree with.

I do not agree with Ward Churchill's original speech because he approaches 9-11 from the point of view that the attacks were indeed carried out by Muslim extremists, which of course I d not agree with at all.

However, Ward Churchill has every right to express his opinions, especially at a university which is supposed to be the source of new ideas in society, not the stern defenders of the status quo such as they appear to be today.

That being said, a careful review of what Ward Churchill actually did say shows that the Eichmann comment was intentionally take out of context by the media (especially Bill O'Reilly at FOX) and fanned into a furious demand for his firing by what in hindsight was a cadre of individuals terrified at anyone who might interfere with the carefully planned propaganda that led from 9-11 to war in the Mideast.

Ward Churchill's "crime" was that while he accepted the official story of 9-11, he questioned whether years of US Mideast policy might not have created the justification for such an attack. The promoters of war needed to sell the idea that the attack was unprovoked and undeserved, the better to create a war-list in the public.

So Ward was publicly pilloried as a warning to any who might challenge any aspect of the propaganda, and now that he has had his day in court, the whole world knows it.

More information is at Ward's personal website at http://www.wardchurchill.net/churchill_v_cu.html

A new study adds to the previously reported evidence that cigarette smoking protects against Parkinson's disease. Specifically, the new research shows a temporal relationship between smoking and reduced risk of Parkinson's disease. That is, the protective effect wanes after smokers quit.

One Way to Save America

We have 40 million Americans facing retirement age. Why don't we give each one of them one million dollars with the stipulation that they buy an American car? 40 million cars sold in the USA. And a condo or house in the USA, not overseas? 40 million real estate buys.

This is just 40 million productive dollars (they'd pay “health insurance” and not need Medicare) instead of 160 million AIG “bonus” dollars which pay for... nothing. Oh, wait, private jets!

I wish this were my idea.... I am so down with it.

Bailing Out Retirees Would Save America

This is an idea I heard but I wish I would have thought of it. Someone please find the original source!

The USA has, let's say, 40 million people entering retirement age. So for a fraction of the bank bailout, let's say we give each one of those retirees a million dollars. You're 65? Here you go, thank you. Their financial security is ensured. Then, we just stipulate they buy one American car. Okay. 40 million new American cars sold! Then we ask them to buy a condo. Okay, say, a nice comfy quarter of a million ocean view somewhere. They will live, the autoworkers will be called back to work and real estate might be viable for people other than Candy Spelling. Oh, and they will be able to pay the outlandish health insurance premiums they cannot today.

Officer Jason Anderson, who shot Fong Lee eight times after chasing him through a playground, was honored for his bravery after a Baikal .380 was found just two feet from the corpse.

On the eve of a global economic summit here, President Obama delivered an unusual warning Wednesday for an American leader: The "voracious" U.S. economy can no longer be the sole engine of global growth.

The statement signaled a recognition of a new economic era with a less dominant U.S. role.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, the G20 has sidelined the US and Barack is trying to make it look like it's his idea.

Lebanon's Econ Grows at 4%, Bks Avoid Toxic Assets-Ctrl Bk Gov

"Lebanon won't be negatively affected by the global credit crisis," he said in a copy of his speech seen by Zawya Dow Jones. "This is mainly due to the fact that banks in Lebanon have no toxic assets and were merely doing commercial banking without leverage."

Record fine for Soros 'illegal manipulation of financial markets'

The principle financier of the Democrats, the man whose early support catapulted Obama into the lead for the nomination, the man who made billions from the stock market crash that changed everything in the fall campaign (McCain was in the lead when the crisis hit), has been given a record fine by Hungarian financial authorities.

Give Obama a Chance to Do What?

The populist anger across America is refreshing. People are angry and getting into it over issues that need to be deliberated over.

For all the problems America faces, its citizens do not have the time to give Obama a chance.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obama has had his chance.

The honeymoon is over.

We got fucked.

Ohio man asks US to halt deportation in Nazi case

Demjanjuk was sentenced to death in 1988 after being tried and convicted in Israel for war crimes. In 1993, the Israeli Supreme Court determined he was not the notorious Nazi death camp guard Ivan the Terrible at Treblinka in Poland, and he was sent home to Seven Hills in suburban Cleveland.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel tried to convict this man and failed, and the fact that they provably had the wrong man called into question every other accusation Israel had made regarding Nazis.

So Israel came back after Demjanjuk again rather than risk the world doubting Israel's claims about the Holocaust. and now they want to try him again, convict him, and this time kill him.

And his crime? Did he actually kill Jews in the camps? No. Did he kill ANYONE in the camps? No.

He fed the dogs.

That's it.

Demjanjuk is accused of being an accessory to whatever supposedly happened at Sobibor because he fed the guard dogs!

And this is why Israel wants to haul him into court a second time, mere weeks after standing there with a straight face insisting that reports by Israel's own soldiers of war crimes committed in Gaza are "merely hearsay."

Israel may well exact their pound of flesh from Demjanjuk, but like operation CAST LEAD, this is going to turn into a public relations disaster.

Israel's choke-hold in America loosens

One of the important, even historic, changes taking place in the United States these days is the slow but steady erosion of the once absolute taboo to speak about the excessive influence of pro-Israeli groups in the United States. Pro-Israeli forces in politics and the mass media can still destroy a public career, especially for a politician, but the stranglehold on discussing this phenomenon is slowly loosening.

Lieberman and Wiping Countries off the face of the Map

The world has had a lot of fun laughing at the pronouncements of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who stands falsely accused of threatening to wipe Israel off the face of the map. But Ahmadinejad has protested that it would be wrong to kill large numbers of civilians.

In contrast, Lieberman has threatened to wipe at least two countries, Egypt and Palestine, off the map. Monstrously, he suggested bombing the Aswan Dam, which would have the effect of murdering all 80 million Egyptians and sweeping them into the Mediterranean in a vast continental African tsunami.

As US arms shipment reaches Israel, President Obama urged to halt further exports

The new delivery to Israel of a massive consignment of US munitions, revealed by Amnesty International today, throws into question whether President Obama will act to prevent the US fuelling further Israeli attacks against civilians that may amount to war crimes, as were perpetrated in Gaza.

Webmaster's Commentary:

More than that, it proves I was correct in predicting that the US would not react at all after the new government of Israel told the US Government to go @&#% itself over the Annapolis Peace Initiative.

Stock rally recharged

In addition, bank stocks surged Tuesday after the Financial Accounting Standards Board, as expected, decided to ease rules that determine how banks value bad assets, so-called "mark-to-market accounting." This gave a surge to the financial sector, with the KBW Bank (BKX) sector index gaining 4%.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, today's soaring DOW is a bookkeeping trick, not real improvement.

And as the DOW soars while the unemployment figures continue their decline, you need to ask what KIND of people are buying in right now, and clearly these are speculators driving the market rather than long term investors.

U-20: Will the Global Economy Resurface?

The Group of 20 (G20) is making a big show of getting together to come to grips with the global economic crisis. But here's the problem with the upcoming summit in London on April 2: It's all show. What the show masks is a very deep worry and fear among the global elite that it really doesn't know the direction in which the world economy is heading and the measures needed to stabilize it.

The latest statistics are exceeding even the gloomiest projections made earlier. Establishment analysts are beginning to mention the dreaded "D" word and there is a spreading sense that a tidal wave just now gathering momentum will simply overwhelm the trillions of dollars allocated for stimulus spending.

U.S. Debtor Meets G20 Creditors at the Dollar's Funeral

In my view, the US banking system died in September 2008, never to be revived from its terminal insolvent state. In my view, the US Economy suffered a death experience, but with a lagged time period. We are witnessing the death now. Its downward spiral is unmistakable. Each month shows worse data than the previous. The degree of doctoring data has escalated to unseen levels, like with seasonality adjustment that amplify raw data many-fold, not just many percent.
