An Insider Spills the Beans on Offshore Banking Centers

An interview with economist and mutual fund manager Michael Hudson

The oil industry created the practice of countries (SHIPS?) flying "flags of convenience" as a means of avoiding income taxes nearly a century ago. Since the 1960s the U.S. Government itself has encouraged American banks to set up branches in Caribbean hot-money centers and more distant islands as a means of attracting foreign money into the dollar. The initial aim was to help finance the Vietnam War by turning America into a new Switzerland for the world's hot money.

Crisis in the US newspaper industry - BBC

BBC News Americas February 27, 2009 Max Deveson

If the economic crisis goes on much longer, will there be any newspapers left in the US to write about it?

The "crisis" in the newspaper industry may, therefore, be more of a crisis for the journalists and publishers who are currently facing job losses and bankruptcy.

But if it is merely the quantity, but not the quality, of journalism that declines then - for readers - there may not be a crisis at all.

US repeating old Iran lies at UN

In a speech to the UN Security Council during a session on Iraq, Susan Rice said once the US withdraws its troops from Iraq, it would 'seek an end to Iran's ambitions to acquire an illicit nuclear capacity, and its support for terrorism'.

Iran's UN envoy, Mohammad Khazaee, said Rice's remarks were a repetition of the same 'groundless accusations' against Iran that the previous US administration had made.

Israel launches campaign against UN nuke watchdog chief

Israel's Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) recently intensified its attacks on the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei. The AEC, one of the most classified bodies in Israel that is also, among other things, responsible for operating the Dimona nuclear reactor, does not often issue public statements, and usually plays down its activities.

But in recent months, given the IAEA director's actions relating to all aspects of Syria and Iran's nuclear programs, the committee decided, with the consent of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, to stop tiptoeing around the issue. The AEC now hurries to respond to ElBaradei's interviews, in which he often speaks of Israeli in critical tones.

Bank bail-out may not be over yet, governor warns MPs

The Bank of England governor, Mervyn King, warned yesterday that Britain's troubled banks could need to tap the government for more money, despite dumping billions of pounds of toxic assets on the Exchequer as part of a government insurance scheme.

Addressing MPs on the Treasury select committee, King said that it would take many months for the government and the regulator to work out the true underlying financial position of the banks, and that they were unlikely to reach a definite conclusion because "it was a situation that was constantly moving".

It would be superfluous in us to point out that a plan to "end" a war which includes the continued garrisoning of up to 50,000 troops in a hostile land is, in reality, a continuation of that war, not its cessation. To produce such a plan and claim that it "ends" a war is the precise equivalent of, say, relieving one's bladder on the back of one's neighbor and telling him that the liquid is actually life-giving rain.

FLASHBACK - Does tax code send U.S. jobs offshore?

The charge could be dismissed as typical campaign-trail exaggeration during a Democratic primary season marked by populism, except for one thing. Many analysts say it's true. "The U.S. tax system does provide an incentive to locate production offshore," says Martin Sullivan, a contributing editor to Tax Notes, a non-profit publication that tracks tax issues.

"If you had two companies in Pittsburgh that both were going to expand capacity and create 100 jobs, our tax code puts the company who chooses to put the plant in Pittsburgh at a competitive disadvantage over the company that chooses to move to a tax haven," says former White House economist Gene Sperling, a Clinton adviser.

2 Money Managers Held in New Wall St. Fraud Case

Their supposed investment prowess lured hundreds of millions of dollars from public pension funds and universities and earned the two lavish trappings of success: stately homes, a stake in the New York Islanders and, for Mr. Greenwood, a horse farm that once belonged to Paul Newman.

But on Wednesday morning, federal agents arrested the two money managers on accusations filed by the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York in what has become all too familiar on Wall Street: Their investment fund was in fact a $667 million fraud — a small-scale version of the $50 billion fraud that Bernard L. Madoff is suspected of orchestrating.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What if ALL these hot-shot "investors" who showed huge profits even as we lost manufacturing over the last 30 years are really Ponzi scheme operators?

Just think about it for a moment. How is it that they continued to grow so rich even as our nation stopped making things to sell with which to bring new money into the system?

Yes, they "invested" in each others' operations. Stanford had money with Madoff, for example. But labor always precedes capitol; where was all this profit paid to investors supposed to be coming from, if America's factories have been in decline for 30 years?

We know for a fact that investment firms that donated to candidates were protected from the SEC and FINRA.

Is Wall Street a wide-open haven for the world's greatest con-artists?

Pensions Scandal: Huge tax payers' loss funding huge pension

This huge pension (£650,000 per year funded from a £16 million pension pot), paid for by tax payers (thanks to RBS's huge loses), is a scandal. A clear cut case of socialising the loses (from the "bad years") and privatizing the profits (from the "good years"). How about that pension pot being used instead to repay the bank's creditors, instead of the government forcing the tax payer to be stuck with holding toxic assets and making huge repayments to the bank's creditors.

What Exactly Is Anti-Semitism?

This concept flies in the face of all reason and logic. What purpose would Gentiles have for hating Jewish people only because they are Jews? It makes absolutely no sense. And yet, despite the sheer and utter lunacy of the claim, it is made frequently, with Gentiles usually assumed to be the guilty party.

Over the years, historians have made several attempts to explain so-called anti-semitism by claiming it was due to Jewish economic success or due to their complicity in the death of Jesus Christ. Some believe it is because of their “chosenness” and many other reasons. Personally, I believe that these aren’t reasons at all, but excuses that those of the Jewish pursuasion come up with to keep people from figuring out exactly what “anti-semitism” really is.

And what is it, exactly?

Big bang race: US underdog takes on Large Hadron Collider

"We were looking at huge budget cuts last year and now we are hoping to get stimulus package money and scrambling to see the best way to use it," Lykken said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hold it.

Now, I love science. And while I think the creation of a Higgs Boson should not be construed as proof of the big bang for reasons previously made clear, I have no fundamental objections to the pursuit of particle physics (as long as the approach towards quantum black holes are handled carefully).

But the Stimulus package for which we are now all on the hook to repay is supposed to be creating jobs for all Americans, and as much as I love science, this project to upstage the LHC seems like pork barrel meets national ego. Aside from the PET scanner and weapons applications, it is hard to see potential spin-offs from this research that will create new products with which to
start new industries.

Which is what we hoped the stimulus package was about.

The Iran-Israel nuclear endgame is now much closer

In recent days, four key developments have clicked in to edge Iran and Israel much closer to a military denouement with profound consequences for American oil that the nation is not prepared to meet.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Once again, Israel trying to goad the US into war on Israel's enemies.

Yes, Iran has a lot of uranium, but it is enriched to the levels used for power stations. It is NOT, nor is it anywhere close to, the levels of enrichment needed for weapons.

Second, the IAEA already stated that the mis-estimation of Iran's amounts of processed fuel rod material was a bookkeeping error; the difference between what IAEA assumed the enrichment could produce, and what it actually yielded.

War with Iran will mean war with Russia. And Israel, I assume, would be perfectly happy (now that the US is broke and little money can be sucked out of the corpse) to have the US and Russia engage in a mutually destructive war which would leave Israel and its hundreds of warheads in effective control of the Middle East and its oil resources.

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Folks, the Second Amendment is not about hunting and it is not about sport shooting. The phrase "Security of a free state" clearly indicates that the arms under discussion are military arms, of necessity equal to power and effectiveness of those that might be used by an invader, whether that invader is a foreign nation or an abusive central government.

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." (Thomas Jefferson Papers p. 334, 1950)

"While the people have property, arms in their hands, and only a spark of noble spirit, the most corrupt Congress must be mad to form any project of tyranny." -- Rev. Nicholas Collin, Fayetteville Gazette (N.C.), October 12, 1789

"[I]f circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights and those of their fellow citizens." -- The Federalist, No. 29 -- Alexander Hamilton

We live today in the very circumstances Jefferson and Hamilton spoke of; a large central government, broke, in debt, that even now seeks to remove our liberties that we may not resist their looting of our lives to fund their excesses.

The government is already planning how to make you a slave. You must plan how to be free.

The CIA Beyond Redemption and Should be Terminated

The Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) has confirmed the worst fears of its creator President Harry Truman that it might degenerate into “an American Gestapo.” It has been just that for so long it is beyond redemption. It represents 60 years of failure and fascism utterly at odds with the spirit of a democracy and needs to be closed, permanently.

The Deep Politics of Hollywood. In the Parents` Best Interests

GE/Universal’s Munich (2005) – Steven Spielberg’s exploration of Israeli vengeance following the Palestinian terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympics – raises similar suspicions. Although the Zionist Organisation of American called for a boycott of the film because they felt it equated Israel with terrorists, such a reading is less than convincing. Indeed, by the time Munich’s credits begin to roll its overriding messages have been stamped indelibly into the brain by the film’s Israeli Special Forces characters: “Every civilization finds it necessary to negotiate compromises with its own values,” “We kill for our future, we kill for peace,” and “Don't f*ck with the Jews.” Predictably, Israel is one of GE’s most loyal customers, buying Hellfire II laser missiles as well as propulsion systems for the F-16 Falcon fighter, the F-4 Phantom fighter, the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, and the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. In Munich’s 167 minute running time the voice of the Palestinian cause is restricted to two and a half minutes of simplistic dialogue. Rather than being an “evenhanded cry for peace,” as the Los Angeles Times hailed it, General Electric’s Munich is more easily interpreted as a subtle corporate endorsement of the policies of a loyal customer.

The US Economy - Designed To Fail

But neither President Obama, nor his Democratic supporters or Republican antagonists, should feel badly about what is happening. This is because the system they have been given to work with was designed to fail. The U.S. was saddled long ago with a debt-based monetary system, whereby the only way money can be introduced into circulation is through bank lending. It was the system that was instituted in 1913 when Congress gave away its constitutional power over money creation to the private banking industry by passing the Federal Reserve Act.

It's Time to Break up the Big Banks

Timothy Geithner is putting the finishing touches on a plan that will dump $1 trillion of toxic assets onto the US taxpayer. The plan, which goes by the opaque moniker the "Public-Private Investment Fund" (PPIF), is designed to provide lavish incentives to hedge funds and private equity firms to purchase bad assets from failing banks. It is a sweetheart deal that provides government financing and guarantees for illiquid mortgage-backed junk for which there is currently no active market. What's got Geithner worried, is the fear that the public will see through this latest boondoggle and set off a political firestorm. If that happens, the markets will go into a swan-dive and Geithner's career at Treasury will come to an abrubt end.

Yes we are raging - against a Government that spies on its citizens while ignoring the crimes of greedy bankers

That the public is being watched by Big Brother at every turn is deeply alarming. That the innocent were being tracked going about their every day lives while a blind eye was being turned to a financial sector apparently hell-bent on destruction is unforgivable.

Peace negotiators urge change of attitude on Hamas

The United States and Israel must change policy towards Hamas and engage the Palestinian militant group if progress is to be made on peace in the Middle East, a group of former peace negotiators said on Thursday.

Writing in Britain's Times newspaper, 14 former foreign ministers and peace negotiators said the three-year policy under which Hamas has been ostracised by the international community had backfired and needed to be changed.

"There can be no meaningful peace process that involves negotiating with the representatives of one part of the Palestinians while simultaneously trying to destroy the other," wrote the signatories, who include Britain's Paddy Ashdown, a former negotiator in Bosnia, and Michael Ancram, who helped broker peace with the IRA in Northern Ireland.

How Can the U.S. Economy Recover Without Manufacturing Capacity?

"The United States' lack of a manufacturing capacity makes it even less likely that anything resembling a lasting recovery can emerge from President Obama's approach to the economic crisis. The infrastructure projects that are supposed to be central to the recovery scheme are only valued at $150 billion - which is not much of a jolt, especially when much of what will have to be bought is only available in other countries, made by foreign workers. Barack Obama has put a huge emphasis on building a green economy. However, according to the New York Times , most of the sources of solar panels and wind turbines are located in Europe and Asia. There can be no green economy without a mass transit makeover of the United States, but the U.S. hasn't made subway and light rail cars in many years.

Ron Paul gives opening statement during HFSC hearing

Ron Paul essentially disagreed with all four facets of the Federal Reserve's program for the struggling economy. In his two-minute statement, he started by branding the financial system a failure, and then laid out the reasons why he didn't think Bernanke's plan was going to save the economy. “It is fundamental for us to understand...if we think we can patch up a system that has failed, it's not going to work,” he told the Reserve's chairman. “We have a total misunderstanding of what credit is, versus capital. Capital can't come from the thin-air creation by a Federal Reserve system, capital has to come from savings.

Webmaster's Commentary:

These House Financial Services Committee hearings will go on as though nothing has happened, and as though this statement was never made.

The bottom line is this: the US government really has no way to fix this.

Some in power think that the "quick fix" should be another war, which is how the US got out of its economic depressions in the past. Unfortunately, this time, that is not going to work for a number of reasons.

Barak Says Israel will ‘Stop at Nothing’ to Deny Iran Nukes

“Time is running out fast and oozing between our fingers,” Barak said. “Robust and resolute sanctions against the Iranian regime are needed,” Barak said. “If these do not succeed in blocking the development, the necessary matters must be considered,” he added.

Webmaster's Commentary:

You just have to love the way members of the Israeli government studiously ignore the fact that everything coming out of the IAEA says that Iran is only enriching uranium enough for a power station, which is what Iran has been saying all along.

But this time, if Israel is planning to bomb Iran because they are an "existential threat", let's let the Israeli military do it all on its own.

And, just for an education as to which world powers not to piss off right now, let Israel deal with the ire of Iran's 7th largest trading partner, Russia. That would be..... interesting.

Indiana Amish community helps in Texas cow country

Amish volunteers helping rebuild after Ike
By Cindy Horswell
Sunday, February 22, 2009

"That is why Fellowship of Christian Farmers organized the relief effort: "Building fences in Texas until the cows come home."
Among the volunteers answering the call have been groups of Amish who learned of the ranchers' plight from their community newsletter in Elkhart and LaGrange counties in Indiana. That's the area that President Barack Obama last week singled out as having the nation's highest unemployment rate.

Many of the 35 Amish volunteers helped out, though they are facing their own financial crises at home. Many have been laid off or had their hours slashed at factories that make recreational vehicles.

Cut the Military Budget

It is particularly inexplicable that so many self-styled moderates ignore the extraordinary increase in military spending. After all, George W. Bush himself has acknowledged its importance. As the December 20 Wall Street Journal notes, "The president remains adamant his budget troubles were the result of a ramp-up in defense spending." Bush then ends this rare burst of intellectual honesty by blaming all this "ramp-up" on the need to fight the war in Iraq.

Exxon drags its feet for 20 years to avoid paying damages to struggling Alaskans, while making record profits

You'd be hard-pressed to find a newspaper in this country that didn't contain at least one heart-breaking story of financial woe on any given day. The recession has become part of our national narrative. But it's important to remember that there are communities that have been feeling the pinch for decades.

Such is the case with Cordova, AK. This small fishing town on the coast of Prince Williams Sound was devastated by the Exxon-Valdez oil spill in March 1989. While environmental and social fallout persists -- something we'll be talking about tomorrow as part of this series -- Cordova has not been able to get back on its financial feet, despite promises from Exxon to make the community whole again.
