Doubts surface on North Korea's role in ship sinking

The way U.S. officials see it, there's little mystery behind the most notorious shipwreck in recent Korean history.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton calls the evidence "overwhelming" that the Cheonan, a South Korean warship that sank in March, was hit by a North Korean torpedo. Vice President Joe Biden has cited the South Korean-led panel investigating the sinking as a model of transparency.

But challenges to the official version of events are coming from an unlikely place: within South Korea.

NATO: Taliban claims to have captured 2 U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan

Two American soldiers went missing after driving off their base in Kabul on Friday afternoon, and the Taliban later claimed to have captured them in eastern Afghanistan, NATO officials said Saturday, the same day five U.S. troops were killed in the south.

The blackest hearts: War crimes in Iraq

As Green was executing the family, Cortez finished raping Abeer and switched positions with Barker. Green came out of the bedroom and announced to Barker and Cortez, "They're all dead. I killed them all." Cortez held Abeer down and Green raped her. Then Cortez pushed a pillow over her face, still pinning her arms with his knees. Green grabbed the AK, pointed the gun at the pillow, and fired one shot, killing Abeer.

The men were becoming extremely frenzied and agitated now. Barker brought a kerosene lamp he had found in the kitchen and dumped the contents on Abeer. Spielman handed a lighter to either Barker or Cortez, who lit the flame. Spielman went to the bedroom and found some blankets to throw on the body to stoke the fire.

Warmington: Cops had hands 'cuffed

As downtown Toronto witnessed burning police cars and a small group of thugs on a rampage, a police source tells me the only thing that stopped the officers from doing that was an order telling them not to. They tell me they could have rounded up all, or most of them, in no time.

I have had several frontline police officers tell me they were told not to get involved.

Hizbullah Possible Culprit in Juarez Car Bomb

A car bomb that exploded July 15 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, may indicate that Mexican drug cartels are being assisted by Hizbullah terrorists. This possibility means that the U.S. may be faced with a Muslim terror threat south of its border that is not completely unlike the terror presence Israel deals with on its southern and northern borders.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Car bombs are certainly not the exclusive provenance of Hezbullah: Israel has used cell phone detonated care bombs for extrajudicial assassinations.

As reported at:

www.seeingisbelieving.ca/cell/Israel/

"Israel has also made use of cell phone technology in its campaign against Palestinian militants. Israel's internal security service is alleged to have assassinated Palestinian bomb-maker Yahya Ayyash, aka "The Engineer", with an exploding cell phone in 1996."

This article offers utterly nothing which could be construed as hard evidence for such a link.

Notice the feeble use of language throughout this piece, attempting to create linkages where none can be proven.

One has to wonder if this article has been placed to set up an enviornment in which some kind of "false flag" attack will take place here in the US, blamed on Hezbullah, and off we go against Iran.

Israeli soldiers attack photographers covering West Bank demonstration

Israeli soldiers attacked a group of local photojournalists in the West Bank last week as they were covering demonstrations in the area for three international news agencies, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

IFJ has learnt that three photographers were attacked by soldiers on Saturday as they covered a demonstration taking place in Beit Omar, near Hebron. They were Hazem Bader from French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), Reuters Abdul Rahim Al-Aqusini and Associated Press Abdul Hafiz Hashlamoun. One photographer said he was hit by a baton and the other lost his hearing after a stun grenade exploded near him.

Containing China Is A Fool's Errand. Yet Obama's Deal with Indonesian Thugs Is Aimed at Exactly That

Yesterday’s announcement by the Obama administration that it is resuming military ties with the mass-murdering war criminals of Indonesia’s special forces ought to give us pause. Because the new relationship with Kopassus, the Indonesian thugs, has little or nothing to do with concrete U.S. interests in Indonesia – do we have any, anyway? – and everything to do with building a Great Wall around China.

Bill Kristol’s ‘Emergency Committee?’ Give me a break

By Stephen M. Walt – Foreign Policy

Via Ben Smith at Politico, we learn that the usual suspects have started yet another organization whose objective is to promote a hard-right, Likudnik agenda in the Middle East. The new group apparently intends to go after anyone who thinks U.S. Middle East policy has been less than totally successful in recent years, and who is willing to think for themselves (and U.S. interests), instead of reflexively echoing the positions favored by AIPAC and other groups in the “status quo” lobby.

Wikipedia Revisionism by Israeli Pressure Groups

CAMERA (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America) is not in fact an organization devoted to fairness in journalism. … Its members also mounted a covert and conspiratorial attempt to edit all Wikipedia articles to slant them toward a rightwing Zionist perspective, and they were banned from Wikipedia when the plot was outed. The organization occasionally succeeds in correcting errors, but only in the same way that a fanatical Khomeinist would easily be able to find and correct errors in US journalism about the Islamic Republic of Iran. It isn´t that ideologues want fairness– they want to impose their blindered narrative on everyone else.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That may explain why Wikipedia keeps deleting articles about What Really Happened and Michael Rivero

US Rejects Chinese Claims to Spratly Islands

The United States has rejected the claims of the Chinese government to territorial control of a number of tiny islands in the South China Sea, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisting the US had a strong “national interest” in ensuring the islands remain open.

Though long of little real value, the islands are said to have a significant oil and natural gas deposit, and the claims over the territorial waters around the islands could be valuable in expanding shipping in the region.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is an issue for China, and all the countries claiming rights to these islands, to resolve among themselves.

That can be accomplished, and doesn't need US interference for this to happen.

Senate Rejects War Bill, Puts House on the Spot

The move will delay final approval of the bill yet again, until the House meets once again to vote on the bill. In the meantime the Pentagon is complaining that their war accounts are “drying up” as the costs of the endless war in Afghanistan continues to spiral.

It is widely expected that the House will, in the end, approve the funds for the war, but it will likely come with another series of debates, and it is so far unclear when the House will take the issue up.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One more cent on these immoral, illegal wars without end, is one cent too many.

The only way the Vietnam war finally came to a conclusion was that Congress ultimately defunding it.

Venezuela Warns Colombia Against Inciting a Conflict

Venezuela’s defense minister on Friday warned Colombia against provoking a conflict after President Hugo Chávez severed ties with the nation and placed his military on alert.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported on 2 July 2010 at:

http://www.welovecostarica.com/public/46_US_Warships_Plus_7000_US_Marines_On_Route_To_Costa_Rica.cfm

"On the 2nd July 2010 the Costa Rica Congress authorized the entry of 46 U.S. warships capable of carrying 200 helicopters and warplanes, plus 7,000 U.S. Marines "who may circulate the country in uniform without any restrictions" , plus submarine killer ships to the Costa Rican coast for "anti-narcotics operations and humanitarian missions' between 1st July 2010 until 31st December 2010."

Although the "good reason" for this deployment was, allegedly drug interdiction, the "real reason" may be far more ominous.

Venezuela's Chavez has been a thorn in the side of the US government for a long time.

Also, as reported on 13 July 2010 at:

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/reuters/MTFH26079_2010-07-13_16-11-49_N13214586.htm

Venezuela revels in oil reserves, challenges remain

"Venezuela hopes to catapult past Saudi Arabia as the world leader in certified crude oil reserves when it finishes registering oil deposits in its vast Orinoco Belt this year.

An increase of 22.5 percent in the Latin American country's reserves was behind OPEC's announcement last week that the group's proven reserves rose in 2009 to 1.06 trillion barrels."

The massive oil wealth that was to have been the "payoff" for the American invasion and occupation of Iraq never materialized.

Nearly nine years on, that US geopolitical "vision" of the installation of pipelines with which to control Eurasian oil, appears to be no closer to reality than it was the day before the US and NATO invaded Afghanistan.

At this point, Venezuela oil is nationalized, a situation the US would love to see reversed.

I have a very difficult time in believing that the timing of this July deployment of US military to Costa Rica, coupled with the escalating tensions between Columbia (the US's "good buddy" in the region) and Venezuela, can possibly be viewed as accidental.

North Korea Vows 'Nuclear' Response To U.S. Military Exercises

North Korea vowed Saturday to respond with "powerful nuclear deterrence" to joint U.S. and South Korean military exercises poised to begin this weekend, saying the drills amount to a provocation that would prompt "retaliatory sacred war."

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have seen variations of this story floating about from several different sources, and I have one, logical question: why would North Korea do something so colossally stupid that it would virtually guarantee it would be bombed into oblivion by the US?!?

The North Korean leadership is many things, but....suicidal?!?

I think not.

That being said, I have to wonder whether or not the US is being set up by its own desperate government, saddled with an unrepayable national debt, two wars (going very badly), staggering unemployment, the Gulf oil catastrophe, and totally failing foreign and domestic policies, for some kind of "false flag" operation to be blamed on the North Koreans.

This being an election year, the Obama administration desperately needs "the mother of all distractions" to attempt to keep the American people from focusing on all that has gone so wretchedly wrong under this administration's watch.

US bank failures reach 108 for 2010

Seven more local and regional banks have closed their doors in the United States, bringing the total number of US bank failures to 103 this year, federal bank regulators announced.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Whether the headline numbers, stating 108 banks have closed, or the number of banks indicated in the body of the article, 103, have closed, to have over 100 US banks fail is a pretty ominous sign for the future of this economy.

White House Predicts Record $1.47 Trillion Deficit

New estimates from the White House on Friday predict the budget deficit will reach a record $1.47 trillion this year. The government is borrowing 41 cents of every dollar it spends.

The new estimates paint a grim unemployment picture as the economy experiences a relatively jobless recovery. The unemployment rate, presently averaging 9.5 percent, would average 9 percent next year under the new estimates.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I think that both these estimates, on the deficit itself, and the unemployment numbers, are have been pegged significantly lower than the real numbers on either of these issues.

US Senate deals blow to global climate talks

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A year and a half after President Barack Obama breathed new life into global talks on a climate treaty, the United States is back in a familiar role -- the holdout.

The Senate's decision Thursday to shelve legislation on climate change is certain to cast a long shadow over December's meeting in Cancun, Mexico that will work on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.

Obama's Democratic allies acknowledged they lacked votes to approve the first-ever US plan restricting carbon emissions blamed for global warming. The task is unlikely to get easier soon, with Democrats facing tight congressional elections in November.

Handcuffed to history in South Asia

by Aijaz Zaka Syed

I sometimes wonder if Shakespeare had India and Pakistan’s leaders in mind when he wrote those immortal lines in As You Like It: “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts.”

No matter who is in power in Delhi or Islamabad, the script of the carefully choreographed diplomatic spectacle never seems to change. From their famous encounter at Tashkent to the tense handshakes at Simla and Agra, and from Vajpayee’s historic bus trip to Lahore to the bitterness of Kargil, the more the narrative changes, the more it remains the same.

North Korea Warns of Nuclear Response to Naval Exercises

North Korea said it would counter U.S. and South Korean joint naval exercises with “nuclear deterrence” after the Obama administration said the government in Pyongyang shouldn’t take any provocative steps.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Folks, this has to be a really major mistranslation or an outright lie. Nobody attacks a fleet carrying out a training exercise, certainly not with such an expensive and rare item as a nuclear weapon. Why would North Korea commit an act of war when war is what thy wish to avoid? This story just does not make any sense, except as part of a drumbeat to justify restarting the Korean war.

CNN ANCHORS CALL FOR CRACKDOWN ON BLOGGERS!

Of course these same talking heads make no mention of Joe the Plumber who reputation was smeared by professional journalists.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Nor do they mention how the corporate media helped lie us all into war with Iraq. Then there were earlier embarrassments.

# NBC Dateline defames a trucking company in a report which manufactured claims of unsafe driving. NBC had to pay a half million in damages.

# CNN/Time - On June 7th, 1998, CNN reported that a Vietnam veteran had accused the Department of Defense of using nerve gas on it's own troops. While hardly the first time that the US has used chemicals against it's own people, this story proved to be un confirmable, and in the face of pressure from the Department of Defense, CNN retracted on July 2nd, 1998. Several reporters were fired, but CNN's Peter Arnett keeps his job by reminding everyone that he just reads what's given to him and has no way of knowing if it's true or not. At last report, Arnett, CNN and TIME have been sued for 100 million dollars for defaming the officers accused of the Sarin gas attacks.

# Steve Brill - Long time DNC donor Steven Brill created a magazine called "Brill's Content" and then shot his own magazine down with the debut issue, which instead of criticizing media offered up a 22 page attack on Kenneth Starr which was then used by the White House to again try to impede the investigation. No sooner had the Brill article debuted than virtually everyone interviewed for the article came forward to claim they had been misquoted and in one case to deny totally the statements attributed to them. Brill's shrill insistence that his quotes were indeed accurate and checked fell apart when one of the interviewees produced a tape recording of the interview. Brill was then forced to retract and apologize.

# Salon - An online magazine funded by Clinton donors, Salon, like Brill, was created to lend an air of credibility to some pretty silly accusations nobody else in the mainstream media would touch. Typical was the story Salon ran accusing Kenneth Starr of paying off witness David Hale. Upon examination, it turned out that Salon's sole source for the accusation was a woman who was a Clinton delegate, and had once worked for detectives trying to find dirt on Kenneth Starr. A (failed) professional psychic, she claimed she could control the rain with her mind and that it was she, not General Norman Schwartzkoppf, who had guided our troops to victory in Desert Storm. One of the reporters working for Salon is Jonathan Broder, who was fired from the Chicago Tribune for plagiarism.

# Stephen Glass - A reporter at the New Republic, Stephen wrote several award winning articles which reinforced the liberal's preconceived notions about conservatives and the nation at large. One example involved a story of a conservative conference that degenerated into drug use and group sex. The story passed editorial review and ran without basic fact checking. The story turned out to be a fabrication, along with almost 1/3 of the total work product of Glass's career at New Republic.

# Patricia Smith resigns her job at the Boston Globe after having to admit she fabricated characters for one of her stories. Later investigation shows that 52 of her articles for the newspaper cannot be verified as factual. Smith had been a finalist for a Pulitzer prize at the time of her disgrace.

# Mike Barnicle refused to resign his job at the Boston Globe after having been caught plagiarizing, and was fired. It was not the first time he had been investigated for fraud in his articles. Barnicle was suspended without pay for two months, which prompted an accusation of racial bias from the NAACP due to the difference in treatment between the white Barnicle and the black Pat Smith.

# The Weekly Standard settles a big lawsuit with Deepak Chopra.

# Both CNN and Tom Brokaw settle out-of-court with Richard Jewell.

# The Wall Street Journal loses a record libel suit filed by a Texas company, paying $200-million in damages.

New York State Demands Billions From BofA and Merrill Lynch

Others who did receive settlements were then harassed by the Internal Revenue Service and had their bank accounts frozen and their Social Security payments offset by any government payments, including stimulus payments.
"Claimants got paid, but actual farmers did not.

Oil Rig’s Siren Was Kept Silent, Technician Says

The emergency alarm on the Deepwater Horizon was not fully activated the day the oil rig caught fire and exploded, killing 11 people and setting off the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a rig worker on Friday told a government panel investigating the accident.

The worker, Mike Williams, the rig’s chief electronics technician, said the general safety alarm was habitually set to “inhibited” to avoid waking up the crew with late-night sirens and emergency lights.

‘Governments Are Not Going to Change This. We Have To’: Antony Loewenstein on Israel/Palestine, the Internet and more

By Alex Kane — Desertpeace

With “peace talks” between the Palestinian Authority and Israel seeming more and more like a dead end, many people around the world, including dissident Jewish voices, are turning to grassroots activism to pressure Israel to end the ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Recently, Jewish Voice for Peace launched a campaign to pressure TIAA-CREF, one of the largest financial services in the U.S., to divest from companies that profit off of the Israeli occupation. Yesterday, the Olympia Food Co-Op, located in the hometown of Rachel Corrie, the American peace activist killed by an Israeli bulldozer, announced a decision to boycott Israeli goods at their two locations.

Veteran columnist Eric Margolis fired by Toronto Sun - his views are "displeasing to Ottawa"

Veteran Sun op-ed columnist Eric Margolis is another casualty of Sun Media's shift to the far right, with little regard for longevity or popularity.

"I wrote for the Sun chain for 27 years because it allowed me total freedom of expression even when the editors disagreed with my opinions - something very rare in the media," Margolis told Toronto Sun Family in an e-mail today.

"This policy has changed. My views are displeasing to Ottawa," he says. "Accordingly, the Sun and I are parting company."

Gerald Celente: Washington Is Paid Off, Only Ron Paul Has Credibility

Earlier today US President Barack Obama signed a bill that is the most comprehensive financial law to be enacted since the Great Depression. The law, which got final approval from the Senate last week, targets the kind of Wall Street risk-taking that helped trigger a global financial meltdown in 2007-2009. Gerald Celente says that this is only going to harm and will not do enough to change Wall Street.

BP Hires Prison Labor to Clean Up Spill While Coastal Residents Struggle

the first few days after BP's Deepwater Horizon wellhead exploded, spewing crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, cleanup workers could be seen on Louisiana beaches wearing scarlet pants and white t-shirts with the words "Inmate Labor" printed in large red block letters. Coastal residents, many of whom had just seen their livelihoods disappear, expressed outrage at community meetings; why should BP be using cheap or free prison labor when so many people were desperate for work? The outfits disappeared overnight.

Some insurers stop writing new coverage for kids

ome major health insurance companies will no longer issue certain types of policies for children, an unintended consequence of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law, state officials said Friday.

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty said several big insurers in his state will stop issuing new policies that cover children individually. Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland said a couple of local insurers in her state are doing likewise.

Webmaster's Commentary:

UT researchers discover water on the moon is widespread, similar to Earth's

Researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, are once again turning what scientists thought they knew about the moon on its head.

Last fall, researchers, including Larry Taylor, a distinguished professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, discovered "lunar dew" on the moon's surface -- absorbed "water" in the uppermost layers of lunar soil. This discovery of water debunked beliefs held since the return of the first Apollo rocks that the moon was bone-dry.

Now, scientists, including Taylor and Yang Liu, research assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, have discovered that water on the moon is more widespread -- on the outside and inside of the moon -- with some similarities to water in volcanic systems on Earth.

Sunshine helps your body fight disease

Getting more sun may directly boost your body's ability to fight disease, according to a groundbreaking study conducted by researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and published in the journal Nature Immunology.

In laboratory tests, researchers found that the immune cells responsible for seeking out and destroying pathogens, known as T cells, cannot function if the body's vitamin D levels are too low.

"We have discovered that the first stage in the activation of a T cell involves vitamin D," researcher Carsten Geisler said. "If the T cells cannot find enough vitamin D in the blood, they won't even begin to mobilize."

Obama trebles drone attacks on Pak Taliban

Missile attacks by US drones in Pakistan, targeting Pakistani Taliban militias have more than trebled under the Obama administration. A study by BBC Urdu service shows that there have been 87 drone attacks between President Obama taking charge on January 20, 2009 and end of June 2010.

A BBC report said more than 700 people have been killed in such attacks. There were only 25 drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas between January 2008 and January 2009.

North Korea warns of nuclear 'sacred war'

Pyongyang was ready to launch a "retaliatory sacred war", the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KINA) said, quoting defence officials.

Washington and Seoul say the war games are to deter North Korean aggression.

...

"All these war manoeuvres are nothing but outright provocations aimed to stifle the Democratic People's Republic of Korea [North Korea] by force of arms," KCNA reported the powerful National Defence Commission as saying.

"The army and people of the DPRK will start a retaliatory sacred war of their own style based on nuclear deterrent any time necessary in order to counter the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces deliberately pushing the situation to the brink of a war."

Parishes try to stop Coast Guard from moving protections
Friday, July 23, 2010 10:40 AM CDT
SLIDELL (AP) — Simmering distrust on the oil-coated Louisiana coast boiled over Thursday as local officials in coastal parishes mounted an effort to stop the Coast Guard from moving protective boom and other oil spill response equipment out of the way of Tropical Storm Bonnie.
"Nungesser said the parishes feared that if the boom was removed it would not be sent back."
"‘‘The Coast Guard has not stood up and made BP do anything unless we rant and rave,’’ said Nungesser, a frequent critic of the response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico."
"Nungesser called the boom movement ‘‘a failed attempt by the Coast Guard to help BP smuggle assets out of here unnoticed.”"

Doubts surface on North Korea's role in ship sinking

Armed with dossiers of their own scientific studies and bolstered by conspiracy theories, critics dispute the findings announced May 20 by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, which pointed a finger at Pyongyang.

They also question why Lee made the announcement nearly two months after the ship's sinking, on the very day campaigning opened for fiercely contested local elections. Many accuse the conservative leader of using the deaths of 46 sailors to stir up anti-communist sentiment and sway the vote.

ROBBING YOU BLIND ALIVE AND DEAD

ROBBING YOU BLIND ALIVE AND DEAD
By Jon Christian Ryter
July 7, 2010
That is the fear of the 57% of the people who refuse to sign donor cards. Just because a doctor says you're clinically dead does not mean you're clinically dead. The AMA criteria for determining when death occurs said Dunlap was dead. At that point, the hospital can legally extract body parts from the organ donor. Zach Dunlap and others like them who are viewed as brain dead when they merely suffered a trauma which made it appear they were brain dead, would die when their organs were harvested. Had the organ-harvest team cracked Zach Dunlap open and began removing his organs, they would have killed a living person who died feeling the pain of being butchered like livestock.

The Hariri Assassination - Israel's Fingerprints Surface

Israel’s agents and operatives in Lebanon and its infiltration of a telecom network have been exposed. At the very least, the STL must recognize that evidence of alleged Hezbollah involvement in Hariri’s death (a group that historically enjoyed good ties with the late premier) is wholly tainted and likely doctored.

The arrest of Qazzi and al-Raba’a in the breakup of Israeli spy rings should prompt the STL to shift its focus to the only regional player that has benefited from Hariri’s murder; one that will continue to do so if and when their designs to implicate Hezbollah are realized.

It is time to look at Tel Aviv.

Lockerbie: Megrahi Was Framed – John Pilger

No one in authority has had the guts to state the truth about the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 above the Scottish village of Lockerbie on 21 December 1988 in which 270 people were killed. The governments in England and Scotland in effect blackmailed Megrahi into dropping his appeal as a condition of his immediate release. Of course there were oil and arms deals under way with Libya; but had Megrahi proceeded with his appeal, some 600 pages of new and deliberately suppressed evidence would have set the seal on his innocence and given us more than a glimpse of how and why he was stitched up for the benefit of “strategic interests.”

Myth-debunking Snopes obscures Israel's role in 9/11

Instead of attempting to debunk the well-documented claims that at least some Israelis were forewarned about the 9/11 attacks, Snopes peremptorily dismisses them, claiming they scarcely merit the dignity of a rebuttal. Yet, Haaretz reported that two employees of Odigo, the Israeli-owned instant messaging service, received messages two hours before the Twin Towers attack on September 11 predicting the attack would happen. Asked whether Israeli agents had advanced knowledge of the 9/11 attacks, Fox News reporter Carl Cameron quoted U.S. investigators who concluded, "How could they not have known?" And then there were those "dancing Israelis" who later claimed on an Israeli talk show that their "purpose was to document the event."

The Real U.S. Government

The Washington Post's Dana Priest demonstrates once again why she's easily one of the best investigative journalists in the nation -- if not the best -- with the publication of Part I of her series, co-written with William Arkin, detailing the sprawling, unaccountable, inexorably growing secret U.S. Government: what the article calls "Top Secret America." To the extent the series receives much substantive attention (and I doubt it will), the focus will likely be on the bureaucratic problems it documents: the massive redundancies, overlap, waste, and inefficiencies which plague this "hidden world, growing beyond control" -- as though everything would better if Top Secret America just functioned a bit more effectively.

On the Coming Fall of the American Empire

By Daniel McCarthy
07/23/2010

To understand the course the Founders intended the republic to follow, one must look to the Constitution, certainly -- but not just to the Constitution. There are, Fein argues, four "Charter Documents" that encapsulate our political tradition. The first two are obvious: the Declaration of Independence announced Americans' right to self-government, and the Constitution established the rule of law within a federal framework. But to discover the Founders' wisdom in foreign policy, one must look to two other Charter Documents: George Washington's Farewell Address and the speech before Congress that Secretary of State John Quincy Adams delivered on July 4, 1821.

Stop Calling Them Heroes

Consider a strange aspect of our wars since October 2001: they have yet to establish a bona fide American hero, a national household name. Two were actually "nominated" early by the Bush administration — Jessica Lynch, a 19-year-old private and clerk captured by the Iraqis in the early days of the American invasion and later "rescued" by Army Rangers and Navy Seals, and Pat Tillman, the former NFL safety who volunteered for service in the Army Rangers eight months after 9/11 and died under "enemy" gunfire in Afghanistan.

BP digitally alters press photo, confesses it's a fake

Amateurish use of Photoshop causes yet another BP embarrassment

by Wilson Rothman

It's been a long season of embarrassment for BP, but leaking oil isn't what the blogosphere is ripping the company for today. A site called Americablog spotted a press photo of BP's Houston command center, ostensibly taken on July 16. The image had quite visibly been Photoshopped — badly — to include more on-screen camera action.

Once word got out — the story was picked up by the Washington Post, where it was then spotted by the tech blog Gizmodo and others — BP 'fessed up. A spokesman admitted that the image was altered, said that a photographer had inserted shots where the TV screens were blank, and provided the original image.

2011: The Year Of The Tax Increase

Unless the U.S. Congress acts, there is going to be a massive wave of tax increases in 2011. In fact, some are already calling 2011 the year of the tax increase. A whole host of tax cuts that Congress established between 2001 and 2003 are set to expire in January unless Congress chooses to renew them. But with Democrats firmly in control of both houses that appears to be extremely unlikely. These tax increases are going to affect every single American (at least those who actually pay taxes). But this will be just the first wave of tax increases. Another huge slate of tax increases passed in the health care reform law is scheduled to go into effect by 2019. So Americans that are already infuriated by our tax system are only going to become more frustrated in the years ahead.
