Stock Market Dissonance: Why the Stock Market no Longer Reflects Main Street Economics. The Dow Jones Industrial Average.

One of the biggest bankruptcies in history occurred on June 1st yet you would not know this by looking at the stock market. In fact, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) shot up by 220 points. If we look at total assets, this is the fourth largest bankruptcy in history. The Dow is made up of 30 companies that show a supposedly wide cross section of the American economy. The company that filed for bankruptcy was General Motors and was actually one of the 30 components. A company that dates back to 1908 and survived the Great Depression. So how can it be that a company that employs 250,000 filing for bankruptcy is actually good for the stock market and makes the DJIA rally so strongly? The easy answer is the stock market no longer reflects the economic reality on main street.

What I Learned as a Car Czar

They say history repeats itself. If you are like me and have lived two lives, you have a good chance of seeing the re-enactment with your own eyes. The current takeover of General Motors by the U.S. government and United Auto Workers makes me think back to Romania's catastrophic mismanagement of the car factories it built jointly with the French companies Renault and Citroen. I was Romania's car czar.

Intimidation at the New York Times: How the Israel Lobby Silenced 2 Leading Columnists

Thomas Friedman was once brave. This New York Times columnist and author established his reputation reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Then the Israel lobby went to work on him.

As noted in the announcement, 123 Real Change invites all members of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition, other active (covert or overt) government whistleblowers, and reporters, to publish their experiences in regard to their own first-hand dealings with the media, where their legit disclosures were either intentionally censored/blacked out, tainted, or otherwise met with a betrayal of trust.

Here is the first project report, this one based on my own first-hand documented experience. On Monday, however, Cheney made sure to blanket the criminally prosecutable blame: "We all approved it," he said, as he continued his propaganda campaign for the declassification of non-existent proof of torture's non-existent effectiveness.

He also blamed the then-head of the counterterrorism program, Richard Clarke, for "obviously miss[ing]" 9/11's warning signs; and, in effect, he blamed CIA director George Tenet for the colossally imbecilic Iraq War: "The prime source of information on the relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda was George Tenet.... MPs' expenses: Departing MPs milked system to the end

MPs who left Parliament at the last election made thousands of pounds from the expenses system in the months just before or after their departure, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Some of those who resigned or lost marginal seats in 2005 have since made tens of thousands of pounds selling or renting out flats that had been funded by the taxpayer.

Other departing MPs passed subsidised properties to their children, while some who had already announced they were stepping down spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money furnishing or redecorating homes.

The disclosures raise fears that dozens of MPs planning to leave Parliament following the expenses scandal stand to make substantial profits.

Torture Is Not a Partisan Issue . . . George Washington - Who Was Neither a Democrat or Republican - Forbid All Torture

In the worst of times – when foreign troops literally occupied American soil, torturing and murdering American patriots – and few believed that the cause of the revolution could ultimately win against the might of the British Empire, the first Commander in Chief of the U.S.A. set the precedent that this society is to lead even our enemies by “benignant sympathy of [our] example.” To win the war against the occupying army of Redcoats, the American revolutionaries needed right on their side.

And it worked. Many of the German Hessians in fact joined the revolutionaries in their fight against the English and stayed here in America to be free when the war was won.

It is disingenuous to ignore the fact that the derivatives scams at the heart of the economic meltdown didn’t exist in President Reagan’s time. Media consultant on WTC tower collapses - not really the authority he claims to be.

“Chief Engineer” Hyman Brown
by Patrick Marks

Why is this information important?

1. Hyman Brown is often cited as an “expert” on the construction of the World Trade Center. In the Tom Brokaw piece, for example, “architect” Hyman Brown “explained” why the Twin Towers collapsed. In a public talk in Boulder, Colorado, “5th in command” Hyman Brown “explained” how the steel beams melted.[xii] Hyman Brown is cited as an authority in documentaries made by the History Channel and the BBC, and even 9-11 Truth champion David Ray Griffin has quoted “construction manager” Hyman Brown.[xiii] Brown’s remarks are considered valuable because he was there. Problem is, he wasn’t there, in all probability, and even if he was, all he did was make coffee.

Nato commander Stanley McChrystal: 'We must gain support of Afghans'

Nato’s next commander in Afghanistan warned yesterday that the West could lose the war against the Taleban if it fails to gain the support of the Afghan people.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan, especially from US airstrikes launched from unmanned drones, have already inflamed anti-American sentiment in parts of the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The total complement of US and NATO boots on the ground in Afghanistan is far less than the old Soviet Union had in this country (around 500,000 people, give or take) , only to have to leave, humiliated, with its tail between its legs.

Even with hired mercenaries, we still will not have enough boots on the ground to successfully occupy Afghanistan.

The US indiscriminate bombing of civilians has caused Afghans to see the Taliban as the good guys, and US and NATO forces as the bad guys.

The rank corruption of the Karzai government, coupled with our indiscriminate bombings of civilians, leaves many Afghans to believe that their lives cannot possibly get better better under the current circumstances.

And the alleged "reconstruction effort" ?!? In the words of Tony Soprano, "Fuggetaboutit!" What has been done (if it has actually been done at all) has been substandard, and awarded to many of the "usual suspects" who have underperformed and overcharged We the People for their services.

As reported in:

"A report issued in June 2005 by the non-profit organization Action Aid reveals that much of the US tax money earmarked to rebuild Afghanistan actually ends up going no further than the pockets of wealthy US corporations. “Phantom aid” that never shows up in the recipient country is a scam in which paychecks for overpriced, and often incompetent, American “experts” under contract to USAID go directly from the Agency to American bank accounts. Additionally, 70 percent of the aid that does make it to a recipient country is carefully “tied” to the donor nation, requiring that the recipient use the donated money to buy products and services from the donor country, often at drastically inflated prices. The US far outstrips other nations in these schemes, as Action Aid calculates that 86 cents of every dollar of American aid is phantom."

86 cents out of every dollar - chew on that for a moment.

Unless and until the aid actually gets to where it's supposed to go, with quality reconstruction projects providing money and training for Afghans, establish and protecting infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads, water systems, etc.), nothing can change here.

So we have several choices here:

1. Declare "victory", and leave.

2. Stop the bombings, start reconstruction programs with real accountability, put Karzai on a short leash (he is, after all, our "cur" of a dictator), and give the Afghan people some hope for their future. With all the misery and devastation the US has caused, we owe this to the Afghan people.

3. Kill every single Afghan still breathing.

Shocked about that last one?? You shouldn't be.

There are some people in the military and congress (particularly those in congress who are "acquisitions" of the oil companies) would would absolutely prefer the third option in order to get the pipelines finally installed, with little or no opposition from the Afghan people.

Let us hope that we have some adults in the room in the Pentagon, Congress, and the White House who do understand what that second option would really cost this country, and the world.

Torture And The American Conscience

We now know that the reason the Bush regime tortured its captives was to coerce false testimony that linked Iraq and Saddam Hussein to al Qaeda and September 11. Without this "evidence," the US invasion of Iraq remains a war crime under the Nuremberg standard.

Torture, then, was a second Bush regime crime used to produce an alibi for the illegal and unprovoked US invasion of Iraq.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The use of torture, domestically or internationally, is completely antithetical to the principals upon which this country was founded, and so beautifully expressed in the American Constitution and Bill of Rights.

If the trials for torture don't happen, charging people from the top down who ordered this done (and I don't see Obama in any hot hurry to have them happen), this country has slid off a cliff in terms of its moral compass as a nation, and will never get that back again.

And that is the terrible, criminal legacy of the preceding administration, enabled by the current administration.

I keep waiting for the American people to get angry about this blood and money sacrificed for these wars based on lies; for dead young men and women coming back in coffins; for other soldiers so physically and emotionally maimed that they can never participate fully in life again.

But most of the time, all I seem to see is a very blank stare; it's almost as though people's understanding of how badly they have been deceived, and financially and emotionally brutalized in all of this, doesn't exist.

And that is frightening.

California will run out of cash in 14 days

The state wallet is empty. The bank closed. Credit has dried up, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told lawmakers in a special Tuesday morning address at the Capitol.

“California’s day of reckoning is here,” he said. With no action, the state will run out of cash in 14 days. Three months after the state budget was approved, California faces a $24 billion deficit.

Schwarzenegger has already proposed massive cuts to education, health care and prisons. Now he’s looking for structural reform to make government more efficient and stretch taxpayer dollars.

Webmaster's Commentary:

We may well see civil unrest as a result of these cuts in California, when they really start to bite.

US newspaper ad revenue slide continues

US newspaper advertising revenue fell more than 28 percent in the first quarter of the year with both print and online posting declines, according to the Newspaper Association of America.

The weak revenue figures for the first quarter come on the heels of the worst year ever for the US newspaper industry. The US newspaper industry has been struggling with competition from free classified ad sites such as Craigslist and the migration of readers to free sites online.

The industry has been hit by a wave of bankruptcies, job cuts and closures over the past few months including a bankruptcy filing by the Tribune Co., owner of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other major papers.

Obama: Iran Has the Right to Nuclear Power

President Barack Obama suggested that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it proves by the end of the year that its aspirations are peaceful.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Tel Aviv is not going to like this, but it is in the NNPT.

And might I remind President Obama that under Article IV of the NNPT that the United States is obligated to HELP Iran build its nuclear power station, which would give the US all the access it needs to satisfy anyone (except Israel) that Iran's power station is just a power station.

To Get a Systemic Risk Regulator Fire Bernanke

Firing Bernanke is not just a question of justice, although the millions of workers who have lost their jobs because of his mistake may see it that way. It is also an essential step in creating regulators who are actually held accountable for the quality of their work and therefore have a reason for taking their job responsibilities seriously.

As more White House condoned torture atrocities are slowly revealed ~ It seems more and more likely that Dick Cheney was complicit, or at the very least, took advantage of the 9/11 attacks and used it as an excuse to implement his grand neocon agenda ~ using these attacks as a justification for shredding the constitution, violating the Geneva Convention, blatantly violating human rights and covering his 9/11 involvement tracks by forcing confessions for the 9/11 commission through illegal torture of detainees.

How Important is Cheney's Admission that There was NEVER Any Evidence Linking Iraq and 9/11?

How important is Cheney's admission?

Well, 5 hours after the 9/11 attacks, Donald Rumsfeld said "my interest is to hit Saddam".

He also said "Go massive . . . Sweep it all up. Things related and not."

And at 2:40 p.m. on September 11th, in a memorandum of discussions between top administration officials, several lines below the statement "judge whether good enough [to] hit S.H. [that is, Saddam Hussein] at same time", is the statement "Hard to get a good case." In other words, top officials knew that there wasn't a good case that Hussein was behind 9/11, but they wanted to use the 9/11 attacks as an excuse to justify war with Iraq anyway.

The aircraft was near the southern edge of the county, flying at about 13,000 feet, officials said.

The retired senior CIA officer also says that the former administration’s repeated assertions that attacks were foiled through torture are hurting US credibility abroad, endangering alliances and aiding the cause of would-be terrorists.

China shuts down Twitter and Bing in lead up to Tiananmen anniversary

It’s widely known that China runs a pretty tight ship - to put it mildly - on what its citizens get to see online, especially that content which exists outside of China. YouTube has been blocked for some time and although Wikipedia was blocked for a while, it’s gradually become more available. However today Chinese authorities have come down like a tonne of bricks on a number of services including Twitter, Flickr, Bing, Live.com, Hotmail.com, Blogger and a number of other sites. Roundtable on Odious Debt

The round table on "Conceptual and Operational Issues of Lender Responsibility for Sovereign Debt" was held on April 14, 2008 in Washington, DC. It was hosted by the World Bank following the publication of a draft World Bank discussion paper entitled "Odious Debt: Some Considerations" in September 2007. The event was organized in response to a request by a coalition of civil society organizations interested in discussing the findings of the Bank paper and the broader issues of odious/illegitimate debt and responsible lending. Around 40 participants attended the event including representatives from civil society organizations, universities, World Bank, IMF, Paris Club Banks, and donor governments.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, the concept of Odious Debt, and the ability of citizens to repudiate the debt incurred by their governments for wars of aggression and political repressions is already under discussion with the world's financial elites!

They know it is a real threat to their profits if post-collapse Americans understand they are not liable for the Bush War Debts.

Workers, towns cast adrift by GM bankruptcy

Pontiac. Mansfield. Spring Hill. Orion Township.

All these places once thrived in the shadow of General Motors plants. But now their futures — and their very identities — are in doubt with the automaker’s decision to file for bankruptcy and shut down more than a dozen factories.

The closings will cause “a ripple effect, and eventually it’s going to ripple ... all over this country,” said the Rev. Robert Knox, 53, who worked for GM for 31 years before taking a buyout in 2006. He’s now an associate minister at a Baptist church in Pontiac, Mich., where GM will close an assembly plant.

Big Trouble in Little Britain

Under the ‘Freedom of Information Act (2000)’ on ‘Airstrip One’, as Orwell referred to Britain, the expenses claimed by elected politicians have come under close scrutiny of the taxpayers funding such ‘gravy train’ to cause of much ‘embarrassment’ of ‘honourable members’ - as elected politicians in Britain are known, and as were once passengers on said ‘gravy train’ as become derailed.

There continuing to be much ‘gnashing of teeth and wailing’ amongst ‘honourable members’ as ‘perpetrators of fraud’ in the House of Commons concerning ‘illegitimate expenses’ revealed, as well as back peddle furious’ in the publicised ‘repayment’ of considerable sums to taxpayer by greatest offenders.
