America's Double-Dip Depression

If the economy climbs out of one recession and into another, it wouldn't be the first time. It happened most recently in the early 1980s, when the United States endured two recessions in less than three years.Regardless of what triggers a relapse, the Obama administration won't stand idly by, Banc of America's Rosenberg said.

Of course, given that the U.S. has actually been in a depression, we're really talking about the possibility of a double-dip depression.

This is, of course, what happened during the Great Depression, and what followers of Elliot wave and other technical indicator systems have been predicting.

Does Obama understand Israel's war goal in Iran?

If Israel launches a military attack (= act of war) against Iran, what would the main goal of this attack be?

There is good reason to believe that the goal would be not the direct physical destruction/incapacitation of Iran's nuclear programs but rather, to trigger an all-out US-Iran war in the course of which, Israel's planners hope, the US would do the dirty work in Iran that it is unable to do itself.

This is a course of action of greatest consequence for Americans.

The Silence of MoveOn

The most powerful grassroots organization of the peace movement, MoveOn, remains silent as the American wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan simmer or escalate.

When he met with Obama in February, Jason Ruben, executive director of MoveOn, told the president it was "the moment to go big," then indicated that MoveOn would not oppose the $94 billion war supplemental request, nor the 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, nor the increased civilian casualties from the mounting number of Predator attacks.

What was MoveOn's explanation for abandoning the peace movement in a meeting with a president the peace movement was key to electing? According to Ruben and MoveOn, it was the preference of its millions of members, as ascertained by house meetings and polls.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Move On is NOT a peace organization. Go back to look at when and how it was created, and you will find that Move On was created specifically to help Bill Clinton evade impeachment. Now that Hillary is SecState and PRO-war, MoveOn shows us its true origins and purposes.

One of the first lessons I learned in analyzing and forecasting the direction of the stock market was the extreme importance of interest rates. Once Considered Unthinkable, U.S. Sales Tax Gets Fresh Look

With budget deficits soaring and President Obama pushing a trillion-dollar-plus expansion of health coverage, some Washington policymakers are taking a fresh look at a money-making idea long considered politically taboo: a national sales tax.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Originally, a national sales tax was floated as a replacement for the income tax, given the dubious issue of the ratification of the 16th Amendment.

But in this case, and typical of the government, they are talking about having a sales tax IN ADDITION TO the income tax.

And forget about health care or anything else offered as the justification; the fact is that the US Government is deeply in debt, and since government cannot earn any of their own money, inevitably, they must take it from you.

I mean, look at the last 6 months alone. The Federal Government has loaded an additional $100,000 in tax debt onto every US tax payer; money they are expected to pay back in the coming years for which they will receive no services at all. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Government has become a black hole into which your life's blood is being sucked, and it will not stop until you stop it.

We all have been tirelessly screaming about issues related to Congressional leaders abdicating their main responsibility of 'oversight.' North Korea thumbs its nuclear nose at Washington.

During the U.S. Presidential primaries last year, I had expressed my misgivings that Barack Obama might turn out to be another Jimmy Carter, whose confused thinking and soft image paved the way for the success of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
The subsequent Iranian defiance of the U.S. and Carter's inability to deal effectively with the crisis in which Iranian students raided the U.S. Embassy in Teheran and held a number of U.S. diplomats hostage led to disillusionment with him in sections of the U.S. and to his failure to get re-elected in 1980.

Petraeus Backs Obama, Not Cheney, On Torture And Gitmo

In an appearance on Radio Free Europe on Sunday, the man hailed by conservatives as the preeminent military figure of his generation left little room for doubt about where he stands on some of Obama's most contentious policies.

"I think, on balance, that those moves help [us]," said the chief of U.S. Central Command. "In fact, I have long been on record as having testified and also in helping write doctrine for interrogation techniques that are completely in line with the Geneva Convention. And as a division commander in Iraq in the early days, we put out guidance very early on to make sure that our soldiers, in fact, knew that we needed to stay within those guidelines.

"With respect to Guantanamo," Petraeus added, "I think that the closure in a responsible manner, obviously one that is certainly being worked out now by the Department of Justice -- I talked to the Attorney General the other day [and] they have a very intensive effort ongoing to determine, indeed, what to do with the detainees who are left, how to deal with them in a legal way, and if continued incarceration is necessary -- again, how to take that forward. But doing that in a responsible manner, I think, sends an important message to the world, as does the commitment of the United States to observe the Geneva Convention when it comes to the treatment of detainees."

Right now my daughter is an absolute angel. One of the toughest things my wife and I will be doing over the next several years is teaching her empathy.
Empathy is great because it allows one to put oneself into situations without risk or harm. It informs judgment and reason, and it keeps people safe. Empathy would probably convince my daughter that water boarding really is torture, especially if it was a favorite technique, to be used against prisoners, of the Spanish Inquisition, the Khmer Rouge, the Japanese Army and the North Vietnamese.
Whoops! Waterboarding is torture and it should not take personal experience to verify that fact (I wonder how Mancow and other survive if they must verify every fact including the inadvisability of dropping a toaster in an occupied bathtub).

While Congress is sidetracked by who said what to whom and when, our nation finds itself at a crossroads on the issue of torture. We are at a point where we must decide if torture is something that is now going to be considered justifiable and reasonable under certain circumstances, or is America better than that?

“Enhanced interrogation” as some prefer to call it, has been used throughout history, usually by despotic governments, to cruelly punish or to extract politically useful statements from prisoners. Governments that do these things invariably bring shame on themselves.

Former military interrogator says torture cost hundreds ‘if not thousands’ of American lives

“Torture does not save lives,” Alexander said in his interview. “And the reason why is that our enemies use it, number one, as a recruiting tool…These same foreign fighters who came to Iraq to fight because of torture and abuse….literally cost us hundreds if not thousands of American lives.”

Moreover, Alexander avers that many — as many as 90 percent — of those captured in Iraq said they joined the fight against the United States because of the torture conducted at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If your enemy knows he will be tortured when captured, then he is more willing to fight to the death, making him far more deadly.

To convince your enemy to surrender, they must believe they will be treated humanely after they do so.

MSM: Ohio counties want to use siezed assets to fund services

State legislators ought to make it easier for financially troubled counties to use seized assets from drug cases to pay for essential services, a group that represents Ohio county commissioners said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

... which means the police, instead of fighting crime, will be looking for opportunities to confiscate assets.

We had a case like that a few years back in Malibu, California, in which the police coveted a pricey piece of real estate and decided that if they raided it and found any marijuana plants growing on it, they could confiscate the property under the civil forfeiture laws and balance their departmental budget.

They did not have any evidence against the property owner, of course, but assumed that it would be "likely" to find a marijuana plant on property that large just from a seed dropped by a smoker.

So they raided the place, and the property owner, not aware that the guys in black were cops, tried to defend his home and was killed.

No marijuana was found anywhere on the property.

Folks, what they are talking about here is pillage, where an occupying armed force simply takes what it wants from the population. They may proclaim it just and legal under the rules they make up for themselves, but it is still pillage.

And it will get worse.

The American Form of Government

An explanation of the various forms of government and political systems, and why America is not a democracy, but a republic.

Glossary of definitions:

despotism - a form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)

More Proof that Credit Default Swaps Caused the "Credit Crisis"

“It’s premature to judge that the credit meltdown is fully over,” said Kazuto Uchida, chief economist in Tokyo at Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd., a unit of Japan’s largest bank. “Banks remain wary of extending credit to each other due to strenuous concerns about counterparty risk.”....

("Counterparty risk" is, of course, the term for the risk from credit default swaps.)

US Economy at Risk for Double-Dip Recession

The U.S. economy appears destined for several years of weak growth and high unemployment that leave it vulnerable to a recession relapse after the massive dose of government stimulus wears off.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Because the stimulus went to the wrong place.

The stimulus was spent to prop up the middlemen, the brokers, and the bankers, and did not address the fundamental problem with the economy, which is the migration of high paying manufacturing jobs to other countries. Nothing has been done to bring those jobs back, and when the bankers have spent their taxpayer-funded loot, the same reality will reassert itself.

Living with 75 tons of depleted uranium in Gaza

Gaza is littered with the depleted uranium Israel uses to strengthen its warheads. Now there will be many children born with deformities and even more precious land beyond human habitation or farming.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Depleted Uranium is used in warheads intended to attack heavily armored targets, such as tanks and bunkers, neither of which the Palestinians have.

So, Israel's only reason to shower Gaza with depleted uranium is to trigger further health problems for the Palestinians.

Malignant Ignorance

Yes, some folks are honest, no doubt about it. But few truly honest people ever achieve much of anything above average (you and I are exceptions of course). The truth is, despite its virtuosity, honesty doesn’t pay very well. As I ponder the matter, I can’t think of a single profession or industry that’s uncompromisingly rooted in truth. Try it. Name one. Just one. I’m all ears.

The Survival of Billy Best Proves Cancer Doctors Wrong about Daniel Hauser

If there’s one thing that cancer doctors and health authorities can’t stand, it’s being wrong. And in the case of 13-year-old Daniel Hauser, the cancer doctors insist that unless the boy submits to chemotherapy as a “treatment” for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he will almost certainly die.

The Joy of Conspiracy Denial

Recently I read another stinging rebuke of the 9-11 conspiracy theorists for their frightful mishandling of evidence, their will to believe only what gives them psychological comfort, and their general state of delusion. It was not the first I had read, nor will it be the last. The writer held unwaveringly to the party line: all those who seek to discredit the official, announced version of the events of 9-11 are "conspiracy theorists"- and should not be listened to. That this position constitutes an attempt at prior censorship does not seem to bother the deniers, nor the fact that the central tenets of conspiracy denial are an ad hominem attack. We are told that conspiracy theorists are crazy, or at least cowardly clingers to delusions that they find comforting.

Webmaster's Commentary:

We are seeing a major media campaign to portray those who doubt the official story about anything as of dubious mental condition (how Stalin-esque).

Government to change “diets & lifestyles” to fight global warming

"GIVE up lamb roasts and save the planet. Government advisers are developing menus to combat climate change by cutting out “high carbon” food such as meat from sheep, whose burping poses a serious threat to the environment."

Webmaster's Commentary:

I warned you that this global warming hoax was going to be used to justify further control over your lives. Now they are talking about the government telling you what you can and cannot eat. Shell 'played role in activist executions'

The Anglo-Dutch petrochemicals giant will be accused of asking Nigeria's military dictatorship to silence Mr Saro-Wiwa and other activists campaigning against ecological damage allegedly brought about by oil extraction.

Mr Saro-Wiwa and eight other campaigners were executed by hanging in November 1995 after being found guilty of what were widely seen as trumped up murder charges.

If found liable, Shell would be forced to pay damages that amount to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Netanyahu to ‘give up outposts’ for US backing on Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is willing to tear down settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank in return for US backing on its stance on arch-foe Iran, local media reported on Tuesday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Remember when Ariel Sharon promised to get out of Gaza in exchange for the rest of the world turning a blind eye to the building of more settlements in the West Bank? And as soon as the settlements were facts on the ground, Israel went right back into Gaza.

The facts it that once Israel gets what it wants from Obama, the settlements will start building again. Obama probably already knows this, but will accept the promise (empty thought it is) as political cover.

Netanyahu bringing Israel closer to war with Iran

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considers the lifting of the Iranian nuclear threat his life's mission. Before coming to power, he had mentioned that such an operation might cost thousands of lives, but the price was justified in view of the threat's severity. His comments yesterday at the meeting of Likud's Knesset faction put to rest Ariel Sharon's doctrine that Iran is not just Israel's problem but the entire world's problem, and Israel must not be at the forefront of the struggle. Israel is now at the forefront.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Israel wants to attack Iran, let 'em go to it. Just leave our Americans kids out of this.

Additionally, the electricity cycles on and off, so I have been unable so far to get the photos upload to me. I am posting it below and when I get the photos and other updates they will appear as usual on this blog.

So Philip Gourevitch Can See the Torture Photos, But We Can’t?

In the Sunday Times Week in Review section, Philip Gourevitch, editor of the Paris Review, defends Barack Obama’s decision not to release the torture photos.

In the process, he reveals that he himself has seen some of the photos.

“I saw many more pictures than were ever published in the press, including, I believe, many—if not most—of the photos that president would now prefer that you don’t see,” he writes.

He can see them, but we can’t.

Government Experiments on U.S. Soldiers: Shocking Claims Come to Light in New Court Case

That government scientists conducted human experiments at Edgewood is not in question. "The program involved testing of nerve agents, nerve agent antidotes, psychochemicals, and irritants," according to a 1994 General Accounting Office (now the Government Accountability Office) report (PDF). At least 7,800 US servicemen served "as laboratory rats or guinea pigs" at Edgewood, alleges Erspamer's complaint, filed in January in a federal district court in California. The Department of Veterans Affairs has reported that military scientists tested hundreds of chemical and biological substances on them, including VX, tabun, soman, sarin, cyanide, LSD, PCP, and World War I-era blister agents like phosgene and mustard. The full scope of the tests, however, may never be known.

U.S. shuns direct criticism to Netanyahu's claim on Jerusalem

The Obama administration on Sunday reiterated that the status of Jerusalem should be solved by peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, avoiding criticizing Israel's tough stance on the issue.

"Jerusalem is a final status issue. Israel and the Palestinians have agreed to resolve its status during negotiations. We will support their efforts to reach agreement on all final status issues," U.S. State Department said in a statement on Sunday.

It would be the first official response by the administration to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's claim that all of Jerusalem will always remain under Israeli sovereignty.

Israel fears Hezbollah anti-aircraft missiles could spark war

The defense establishment is concerned that Hezbollah will try to smuggle advanced anti-aircraft missiles into Lebanon in the near future - yet another reason for the rising tension on the Israel-Lebanon border. Israel has made it clear in past statements that it will consider such a development as crossing a red line, which might necessitate preventative measures.

Threats to Judges, Prosecutors Soaring

"I live with a constant heightened sense of awareness," said John R. Adams, a federal judge in Ohio who began taking firearms classes after a federal judge's family was slain in Chicago and takes a pistol to the courthouse on weekends. "If I'm going to carry a firearm, I'd better know how to use it."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Overall, when judges and prosecutors are seen to enforce just laws equally, personal danger is low (never gone completely, of course). But in these times, as the obvious double standard in the way (for example) Michael Vick is treated versus Dick Cheney becomes more obvious, judges and prosecutors are not seen as the upholders of the law, but merely enforcers of the tyrants. It is understandable that patriots might see them as part of the problem rather than a solution to the injustices occurring daily across the land.

Obama’s Guantánamo Appeasement Plan

Obama's plan would backtrack on an early promise to shut down the military commissions. Obama now claims that such commissions can be fair because they will no longer permit the use of evidence obtained by cruel, inhuman or degrading interrogation methods. He fails to mention, however, that the Pentagon is using "clean teams" to re-interrogate people who were previously interrogated using the prohibited methods. When they once again give the same information, it miraculously becomes untainted. Obama also fails to acknowledge that those tried in the military commissions are forbidden from seeing all the evidence against them, a violation of the bedrock principle that the accused must have an opportunity to confront his accusers.
