'Israel will face terror, missiles in future war'

Vilnai made the comments during a session of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, in which he said the Home Front Command would simulate defending against such an assault as part of a large-scale drill to be held next week.

"This isn't an imaginary situation. This isn't detached from reality and if there is a war, it's very likely that this is what will happen," said the deputy minister.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai: what appears to be completely detached from reality is your lack of recognition that it is the issue of how the Palestinians are being treated, in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank, which is the crux of any possible rage against Israel that its neighbors might harbor.

How to cure the problem? Well, sir, let's chew on these for starters.

1. Declare your borders, period, end of discussion. (Invading Lebanon to steal the Litani River didn't do very well for Israel's reputation in the international community.)

2. Immediately sit down with all levels of Palestinian leadership to declare an iron-clad, absolute cease-fire, while a Palestinian state is established (and not, thank you very much, within the boundaries of Jordan.)
3. Invite countries from around the world to invest in a viable re-building/replanting program for Palestine (the IDF has done such a grand job of burning and otherwise destroying Palestinian crops, as you are well aware)
4. Prepare for a new era of peace, with unprecedented economic and social cooperation at all levels from all of your neighbors.

Or.... you can continue doing precisely what you have been doing, and be constantly on a war footing.

FDA takes issue with Cheerios claim

The Food and Drug Administration said in a warning letter to General Mills that language on the Cheerios box suggests the cereal is designed to prevent or treat heart disease by lowering cholesterol. Regulators say that only FDA-approved drugs are allowed to make such claims.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that FDA doesn't claim Cheerios does not actually lower cholesterol, only that they are not allowed to say it (which would annoy the pharmaceutical companies no end).

China warns Federal Reserve over 'printing money'

Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, said: "Senior officials of the Chinese government grilled me about whether or not we are going to monetise the actions of our legislature."

His recent trip to the Far East appears to have been a stark reminder that Asia's "Confucian" culture of right action does not look kindly on the insouciant policy of printing money by Anglo-Saxons.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Look at the fact that the Fed just keeps printing up money with absolutely nothing to back it up, the Chinese, who hold a great deal of their surpluses, have every reason to be concerned at what they see happening to the US economically right now.

Just what are we commemorating this Memorial Day?

While millions of Americans will go to national cemeteries today to visit departed loved ones and to cry their hearts out, one has to ask just what those brave souls died for.

America the Beautiful? Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Fighting and dying so the Fed can steal trillions and trillions of OUR money?

Or is it what former Secretary of State Kissinger said, referring pointedly to military men as "dumb, stupid animals to be used" as pawns for foreign policy?

GE's Jeff Immelt: Global Warming 'Compelling'; Cap-and-Trade Most 'Effective' Way to Go

The General Electric CEO said he favored a cap-and-trade system to regulate carbon emissions versus a carbon tax.

"Look, I've said it - there's got to be a price for carbon," Immelt said. "I've come to the conclusion that cap-and-trade is the most effective way to create a market and go. There's going to be people that argue for taxes. But, I - I just think cap-and-trade is the more practical approach. But let's debate all that stuff, but let's get it done."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Elsewhere in the nation, tent cities and shelters from California to Massachusetts report growing demand from the newly homeless. The National Alliance to End Homelessness predicted in January that the recession would force 1.5 million more people into homelessness over the next two years. Already, "tens of thousands" have lost their homes, Alliance President Nan Roman says.

"We're hearing from shelter providers that the shelters are overflowing, filled to capacity," says Ellen Bassuk, president of the National Center on Family Homelessness.

Iran's Ahmadinejad rejects Western nuclear proposal

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday rejected a Western proposal for it to "freeze" its nuclear work in return for no new sanctions and ruled out any talks with major powers on the issue.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Iraq has shown the world that it does not matter what you agree to do with the USreal; the war will be on anyway and even if Iran froze its nuclear power station, the same media that has transformed that power station into a weapons lab in the public eye will simply claim that Iran continues the weapons work anyway.

Ahmadinejad understands that caving into the US will accomplish nothing except waste the investment in the power station. The war is on anyway.

Iran has a legal right to build that power station, and the US is acting illegally in trying to deprive Iran of its legal rights under the NNPT. Iran knows that, and more the the point, the rest of the world knows it.

Iran does not want a war, but it sees the US already at the bring of disaster with three ongoing wars and a crippled economy, and with Russia ready (indeed eager after Afghanistan) to logistically support Iran against the US, Iran knows that the outcome of this was may not be the foregone conclusion the US imagines.

US bonds sale faces market resistance

The interest yield on 10-year US Treasuries – the benchmark price of long-term credit for the global system – jumped 33 basis points last week to 3.45pc week on contagion effects after Standard & Poor's issued a warning on Britain's "AAA" credit rating.

The Obama administration needs to raise $2 trillion this year to cover the fiscal stimulus plan and the bank bail-outs. It has to fund $900bn by September.

U.S. appeals to China to help stabilize Pakistan

The Obama administration has appealed to China to provide training and even military equipment to help Pakistan counter a growing militant threat, U.S. officials said.

The proposal is part of a broad push by Washington to enlist key allies of Pakistan in the effort to stabilize the country. The U.S. is seeking to persuade Islamabad to step up its efforts against militants, while supporting the fragile civilian government and the nation's tottering economy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Bush's Shocking Biblical Prophecy Emerges: God Wants to "Erase" Mid-East Enemies "Before a New Age Begins"

The story has now been confirmed by Chirac himself in a new book, published in France in March, by journalist Jean Claude Maurice. Chirac is said to have been stupefied and disturbed by Bush's invocation of Biblical prophesy to justify the war in Iraq and "wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs".

In the same year he spoke to Chirac, Bush had reportedly said to the Palestinian foreign minister that he was on "a mission from God" in launching the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan and was receiving commands from the Lord.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel's Barak to US next week for Iran talks

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak will fly to Washington next week for talks with his counterpart Robert Gates and senior officials set to focus on Iran's nuclear ambitions, an official said.

The defence minister was also planning to meet Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama's National Security Adviser James Jones and special Middle East envoy George Mitchell, the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is just to calibrate the fine points of a US-led military offensive against Iran; nothing more, nothing less.

Were I a betting person, I would bet that such an attack may well happen before the end of this year.

But what will be very interesting, after his conferences here, will see if Ehud Barak will be going to Russia next, because that is the great unknown in terms of how they would respond to such an attack against Iran.

Russia cannot be seen to just let its 7th largest trading partner go down to an Israeli/US invasion without a really good reason; Barak knows that he will have to give it to them, to prevent them from going to war on Iran's behalf.

Special Tribunal Spokeswoman, Hezbollah Dismiss Spiegel’s Allegations

Hezbollah media relations’ bureau issued a statement on Sunday in which it dismissed allegations published by the German magazine Der Spiegel and broadcast by Al-Arabiyya Channel saying that it is nothing less than “police fabrications”.

Der Spiegel claimed on Saturday that the UN special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005, had new evidence that Hezbollah special forces "planned and executed" the Beirut car bombing that killed the former premier and 22 others.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Originally, Syria was blamed for Hariri's death, which led to Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon ... whereupon Israel attacked Lebanon in an attempt to gain access to the Litani river whose water Israel covets.

But Hezbollah, even without Syrian assistance, stopped Israel and the consensus is that Israel lost the 2006 invasion.

So it comes as no surprise that the frame up for Hariri's assassination (thought to have actually been carried out by Israel) shifts to Hezbollah, as Israel needs to find a way to get them out of the way before the next attempt to steal the Litani River.

Looking back on that time, while the US Government declared political victory in the war, and the "Captains of Industry" grew rich turning looted war material into corporations that could hardly fail in competing with nations whose industrial bases had been bombed into rubble, I recognize that the town I grew up in had been defeated in that war. It had been eviscerated. It had had its very heart cut out of it; a gaping hole that never healed, but could only be forgotten.

No more First Amendment, warrantless spying on Americans, show trials, confessions extracted by torture; for this Walter gave up a lung?

US must rein in Israel's nuclear arms

The surprise announcement by Rose Gottemoeller, a US assistant secretary of state, that America would like every nation – including Israel – to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) has sent shockwaves through Tel Aviv, confirming the fears (or hopes, depending on who you ask) that the Obama administration is initiating a major overhaul of its policy on nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

The Israeli government will certainly challenge the Obama administration on this issue, as Israel is not likely to co-operate, to put it mildly, with the state department's new logical, fair-minded approach to non-proliferation.

The personal medical records of tens of thousands of people have been lost by the NHS in a series of grave data security leaks. The sacred principle of doctor-patient confidentiality is being compromised, Richard Thomas, the Information Commissioner, has warned. Britain's information watchdog has ordered an urgent overhaul of data security in the health service.

Some computers containing medical records have been left by skips and stolen. Others were left on encrypted discs – but the passwords allowing access were taped to the side.

Egyption Collaboration With Israel Is Strangling Gaza

he Egyptian Authorities blocked on Sunday the European Hope Convoy, filled with medical aid, from crossing into the Gaza Strip despite all preparations and calls on Egypt to facilitate the entry of the convoy into the besieged and impoverished coastal region.

The Egyptian authorities only allowed some members of the convoy and some said to cross into Gaza , but the European Campaign to End the Siege said that is insufficient and would not enable Gaza hospitals to treat the patients, especially those injured during the three-week Israel offensive earlier this year.

Nearly 160 peace activists and workers of non-governmental organizations from different European countries were about to enter Gaza after the Egyptian authorities stamped their passports, but then were not allowed through.

They May Not Want The Bomb

Everything you know about Iran is wrong, or at least more complicated than you think. Take the bomb. The regime wants to be a nuclear power but could well be happy with a peaceful civilian program (which could make the challenge it poses more complex). What's the evidence? Well, over the last five years, senior Iranian officials at every level have repeatedly asserted that they do not intend to build nuclear weapons. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has quoted the regime's founding father, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who asserted that such weapons were "un-Islamic." The country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a fatwa in 2004 describing the use of nuclear weapons as immoral.

Undead deleted photos linger on social networking websites

That embarrassing party shot of you and that hot dog may still come back to haunt you - photos posted on social networking websites can often be easily viewed even after users attempt to delete them, according to a study by security researchers at the University of Cambridge.

Researchers posted photos on 16 social networking and Web 2.0 websites, keeping a careful record of the URL associated with the photos, before deleting the images. Even after this supposed deletion the researchers were able to find the photos on seven of the 16 websites a month later, simply by visiting the web location associated with the image.

The problem arises because sites often fail to remove image files from their photo servers after they are deleted from the main website.

Rethinking the costs of peace

Josh Ruebner calls on US President Barack Obama to make US military aid to Israel consistent with the Arms Export Control Act, which limits the use of weapons given to foreign countries to “internal security” and “legitimate self-defence”, not the killing of innocent civilians and illegal occupation, as Israel is doing.

“The provision of US weapons to Israel at taxpayer expense has done nothing to bring Israelis and Palestinians closer to achieving a just and lasting peace. Rather, these weapons have had the exact opposite effect, as documented recently by Amnesty International, which pointed to US weapons as a prime factor “fueling” the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

Security turnaround in Afghanistan in 18 months a must: Mullen

Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the military solution was not enough but the buildup in US forces would be used to turn around the security situation.

President Barack Obama has approved deployments that would double the size of the US force in Afghanistan to 68,000 by the fall.

Someday the word “anti-Semite” will be studied as an example of distorted political discourse — as a signifier attached to somebody who advocates the reign of demonology. We certainly cannot expect that Jewish intellectuals will think critically about Jewish influence. Meeting Force with Force

”A little rebellion now and then is a good thing.” – Thomas Jefferson

I strictly believe people have a right to not only rebel against their government, but also to use violence against their government when it is absolutely necessary. However, people should not initiate force against their government as a primary movement, instead people should work at asserting their rights first and foremost with nonviolence. If nonviolent movements fail then they should be more than welcomed to defend their lives and liberties physically.

The Weimar Hyperinflation: Time to get out the wheelbarrows?

What actually drove the wartime inflation into hyperinflation, said Schacht, was speculation by foreign investors, who would bet on the mark's decreasing value by selling it short.

Short selling of the German mark was made possible because PRIVATE banks made massive amounts of currency available for borrowing, marks that were created on demand and lent to investors, returning a profitable interest to the banks.

At first, the speculation was fed by the Reichsbank (the German central bank), which had recently been PRIVATIZED. But when the Reichsbank could no longer keep up with the voracious demand for marks, other PRIVATE BANKS WERE ALLOWED TO CREATE THEM [MARKS] OUT OF NOTHING AND LEND THEM AT INTEREST.

FLASHBACK - A moment of reflection

That we have been attacked is certain. But before we send out the cruise missiles to prove how big our national dick is, we had better make sure we are aimed at the right party, and not just being suckered into bombing someone that the real planners and perpetrators of the World Trade Center attack want to trick us into bombing. Because if, in the heat of the moment and the lust for vengeance we surrender our basic American principles such as demand for proof beyond a reasonable doubt, then we ourselves will have damaged America and what it stands for far more than those who attacked the World Trade Center could ever do themselves. What the hijackers could not knock down, we will have thrown down ourselves.

Now at last it's time for Shell to atone for my father's death

Ken Saro-Wiwa's real "crime" was his audacity to sensitise local and global public opinion to the ecological and human rights abuses perpetrated by Shell and a ruthless military dictatorship against the Ogoni people. The success of his campaign had mobilised our community to say "No to Shell" and to demand compensation for years of oil spills that had polluted our farms, streams and water sources. My father called the world's attention to the gas flares that had been pumping toxic fumes into the Earth's atmosphere for up to 24 hours a day since oil was discovered on our lands in 1958. The members left for Rafah at 6AM Egypt time and just a few minutes ago I was informed they are 5 km from the border, now I just got another text and it looks like they are all together at the border waiting (Sorry the last text is a little confusing and I’m not really awake yet)

Webmaster's Commentary:

Maybe. The article does not say the convoy has gone through the border yet.

TARP Warrants Show Banks May Reap ‘Ruthless Bargain’

While 17 financial institutions have repaid TARP funds, two have come to terms with the U.S. on the value of the rights to buy stock that taxpayers received for the risk of recapitalizing the industry. The first was Old National Bancorp in Evansville, Indiana, which gave the Treasury Department $1.2 million last week for warrants that may have been worth $5.81 million, according to the data.

If Geithner makes the same deal for all companies in the rescue program, lenders may walk away with 80 percent of the profits taxpayers might have claimed.

Provoking the Inevitable

On Monday, Iraqi government security forces arrested two prominent Sunni leaders in Iraq?s volatile Diyala Province. One of them, Sheikh Riyadh al-Mujami, not coincidentally, is a prominent leader in the local Sahwa (Sons of Iraq), the 100,000-strong Sunni militia that was set up by the US military to quell attacks against occupation forces and launch an effort to battle al-Qaeda in Iraq. Both of those objectives were accomplished, but these efforts are being erased by ongoing missions by Iraqi government security forces, sometimes backed by the US military, to kill or capture both Sahwa leadership and fighters.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It appears that Iraq is once again simmering close to the boiling point of a new, bloody civil war.

FBI ‘lured dimwits’ into terror plot

“This whole operation was a foolish waste of time and money,” claimed Terence Kindlon, a defence lawyer who represented the last terror suspect to be tried in New York state. “It is almost as if the FBI cooked up the plot and found four idiots to install as defendants.”

Kindlon’s complaints were echoed by other legal experts who have repeatedly questioned the FBI’s reliance on undercover informants – known as confidential witnesses (CWs) – who lure gullible radicals into far-fetched plots that are then foiled by the agents monitoring them.

Israeli forces shoot Ni?lin demonstrator in the head with tear-gas projectile

At 2:30, one Palestinian youth, aged 20, was shot in the head with a tear-gas canister from around 10 meters as he was standing near a home on the outskirts of the village. He was bleeding profusely from his head and had to be taken to Ramallah hospital. The tear-gas canister shattered part of his skull and he had to undergo surgery.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Religion vs Insanity

You can't even really tell the difference between insane and religious other than that the religion has been established as having it's own brand of insanity passed on to an idiot where as regular insanity at least requires some creativity on the part of the crazy person.

In the modern world psychology has to give religion a pass because under any other context those same beliefs would constitute major schizophrenia, delusion, paranoia, and narcissism all at the same time.

Webmaster's Commentary:

When you talk to God, that is prayer.

When God talks to you, that is schizophrenia!

New York Times Falsifies Obama-Netanyahu Meeting

The New York Times assigned to the story a campaign-trail reporter, Sheryl Gay Stolberg, whose political perceptions are bland and whose knowledge of Israeli-American relations is an antiseptic zero. At the newspaper of record, a thing like that does not happen by accident. They took the most anxiously awaited meeting with a foreign leader of President Obama's term thus far, and buried it on page 12. The coverage of a major event, which the same newspaper had greeted only the day before by running an oversize attack-Iran op-ed by Jeffrey Goldberg, has officially now shrunk to the scale of a smaller op-ed.

Feingold: Prolonged detention would ’set the stage for future Guantanamos’

Feingold announces in the letter that he plans to hold a hearing on the matter next month and asks for top Justice Department officials to testify.

“While I appreciate your good faith desire to at least enact a statutory basis for such a regime,” Feingold writes, “any system that permits the government to indefinitely detain individuals without charge or without a meaningful opportunity to have accusations against them adjudicated by an impartial arbiter violates basic American values and is likely unconstitutional.”

Taliban might launch retaliatory attacks across Pakistan, says Gilani

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that terrorists might carry out retaliatory attacks in the country as they have suffered heavy losses in the wake of the military offensives in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

"There are intelligence reports that terrorists can carry out attacks in any part of the country as reaction," Gilani told reporters in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If history has taught us anything, it has taught us that the remedies to radicalization cannot be sought solely through military suppression; social and political changes have to be part of the process.

Does a person who's able to go to work at a meaningful job at a decent wage, who can take care of himself (or herself) and the family, and who sees hope in the political process and the future suddenly wake up and say "I think I'm going to start shooting at government and military personnel!?!"

People become radicalized because they have no voice in what is going on with them, and not one whole heck of a lot to lose by becoming violent. In fact, under those circumstances, many think they may have everything to gain.

Gilani just doesn't get it, or doesn't care. Unfortunately, that does not bode well for the future of the Pakistani people.

Tony Blair believed God wanted him to go to war to fight evil, claims his mentor

John Burton, Mr Blair's political agent in his Sedgefield constituency for 24 years, says that Labour's most successful ever leader – in terms of elections won – was driven by the belief that "good should triumph over evil".

"It's very simple to explain the idea of Blair the Warrior," he says. "It was part of Tony living out his faith."

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder about a "faith" which requires the absolute destruction of a country which was never any real threat to the UK or the west.

What has been left in the wake of the invasion and occupation of Iraq is the utter devastation of that country, the infrastructure, with its medical systems and educational systems absolutely destroyed.

Oh, and let's not forget the dumping of tons of depleted uranium by coalition forces,, leaving large sections of the population mortally ill with cancer, and with huge numbers of birth defects in its wake.

Any god which demands those kinds of outcomes from their followers is a pretty spiritually evil deity.

Israel furious over Russia FM's meeting with Hamas leader

Senior officials in the Foreign Ministry were furious on Sunday over the news that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Hamas leader Khaled Meshal in Damascus.

Lavrov said on Saturday that Russia believes in the need to maintain contacts with Hamas despite a cooling of ties between the two sides.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Netanyahu: the Russian Foreign Minister is entitled to meet with whomever he wants to meet, and all the "fury" in the world does not negate his right to do this.

Also, Russia's leadership understands that talking is always superior to dropping bombs (something which, in its short history, Israel has yet to figure out.)

Federal judge threatens to sanction Obama administration over secrecy

U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker of San Francisco warned the Obama administration on Friday of severe sanctions if it does not comply with the court’s order to turn over a secret document an Islamic group says proves they were illegally spied upon.

The case, Al-Haramain v. Obama (see also: Al-Haramain V. Bush), springs out of a government mistake in which a secret document detailing the wiretapping of calls between attorneys and Saudi charity Al-Haramain was turned over to the charity’s counsel.
