Lavrov in talks with Kerry expressed indignation over US corruption accusations

"It was stressed that the blame for delicately fanning tensions in bilateral relations lies fully on Washington," the foreign ministry said. The telephone conversation was held on the initiative of the US side, and the sides also discussed the situation in Syria.
"Of course, the president is familiar with those statements. He also considers them to be absolutely unacceptable and inappropriate for such high-ranking officials from the United States," Peskov said answering a TASS question. http://tass.ru/en/politics/853066

'I could have done more. I should have done more': Thirty years after the Challenger explosion, NASA contractor is still racked with guilt over death of seven crew members

For the millions of Americans who watched the Challenger space shuttle burst into flames over the south Florida sky thirty years ago, it was a moment of profound surprise and shock.

But not for Bob Ebeling. He saw it coming and even told his wife the night before the launch 'it's going to blow up'.

The former engineer for NASA contractor Morton Thiokol was part of a team of four that tried to warn the space agency against the launch, saying the temperatures in Cape Canaveral were too cold for the booster rockets to seal properly.

Despite their efforts to postpone the launch, NASA overruled them and went forward with the mission - sending six crew members and a school teacher to their death.

'I was one of the few that was really close to the situation,' Ebeling, now 89, told NPR. 'Had they listened to me and wait[ed] for a weather change, it might have been a completely different outcome.'

Russia and Finland will continue to work on Nord Stream-2 pipeline project — PM

Finland and Russia regard the construction of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline as a purely commercial project and intend to continue to work on it, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said answering a question from TASS at a press conference after talks with his colleague from Finland.
Russian deputy FM says Finland holds no official discussion on joining NATO: "As far as I know, there have been no official debates [on Finland’s accession to NATO]. A public discussion is under way [in Finland]," Titov told journalists. "We know that some kind of reports are in the making for future discussions. But no decisions on the matter have been made. There have even been some statements that the incumbent government will not pass any decisions on this subject," Titov said.

South Ossetia wants International Criminal Court to use its materials in investigation

South Ossetia said it is ready to support investigation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) into the situation in Georgia in 2008, but the court should consider the base of crimes, the republic has, so that the investigation is deemed fair, South Ossetia’s Foreign Minister Kazbulat Tskhovrebov told TASS on Friday. "South Ossetia is satisfied with the decision of the International Criminal Court concerning investigation into military crimes and crimes against humanity, committed in and around South Ossetia between July 1 and October 10, 2008," the minister said. "Though the Rome statute is not applicable in its territory, the republic is ready to support impartial and professional investigation."

Transdniestria accuses Moldova of tightening border regime for no reason

Citizens who use Russian and Ukrainian passports for foreign trips are facing great problems, Transdniestria’s Foreign Ministry press service said on Wednesday. "Moldovan border guards demand residence permits or foreign passports from these people," the foreign ministry said. Any identity paper issued in Transdniestria is enough to confirm the fact of permanent residence in Transdniestria. Tiraspol regards the Moldovan side’s actions as a direct violation of the agreements reached during negotiations on the settlement in Transdniestria," the foreign ministry said. Most people in Transdniestria have Russian and Ukrainian passports. That allows them to cross the borders of both countries unhindered. The relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol deteriorated last year largely due to the political crisis in Moldova where several governments have changed.

Trump Just Announced The REAL Reason He’s Skipping Debate – It’s NOT Megyn Kelly

Trump began to make noise hinting that he might not attend the event, and Tuesday evening he announced he would not participate in debate.

“It was the childishly written and taunting PR statement by Fox that made me not do the debate,” Trump posted on Twitter. “More so than lightweight reporter, Megyn Kelly.”

BoJ NEGATIVE RATES BOMBSHELL: Why this will look to many people like desperation

Everything and everyone holding Bank of Japan bonds woke up this morning to the news that as from here on, they’re paying money for the privilege of buying and holding public debt bonds or keeping other deposits at the Bank.

That’s how bonkers things have become. But forgetting the lunacy of asking people to pay for the privilege of lending money to you – yes, even without that – the shock move being described this morning in the West as “risky” will, it seems to me, evoke some of the stuff the BoJ fantasises about…but also, all the stuff they have nightmares about.

Last night, the Bundy Militia’s takeover of a federal refuge in Burns, Oregon took a drastic turn for the worse when eight members of the militia’s leadership, including Ammon Bundy, were arrested after a brief shootout along the highway that ended with the death of one of Bundy’s crew. Allegedly the man shot was unarmed, and he was shot three times. The "ripple effect," or the "aftershock" of what is happening in Oregon remains to be seen, but it's safe to say there will be one…

Trump overshadows Republican debate even as he sits it out

Without Trump on stage, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie found themselves with more room to make their case to voters seeking a more mainstream candidate.

Both men have an eye on the Feb. 9 first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire, which comes on the heels of the Iowa caucuses on Monday and where an establishment Republican like them might have a better chance of standing out.

Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Senator Marco Rubio from Florida, the two top challengers to Trump in Iowa, engaged in squabbles over immigration and national security and did not appear to threaten Trump's lead. He holds the edge over Cruz in polls of Iowa Republicans.

Trump's rivals mocked his decision to sit out the debate and found ways to criticise him.

Hillary Clinton: Least fit of all

Even considering that no one is fit to be president — in that no one should be able to command a state, which rules by threatening and committing violence against innocents — Hillary Clinton is especially unfit. Many things in her career could impose this special disqualification. Her vote for George W. Bush’s criminal and lie-based Iraq war, for example, would be more than enough to rule her out. That political ambition now prompts her to express regret for her vote should count for nothing, especially in light of what is to be discussed below. When she says she learned her lesson, she lies.

Likewise, her declaration of open-season on Syrian President Assad gave a boost to the Islamic State and al-Qaeda affiliates.

Reporting methods mask the high lead levels of children in Kalamazoo's core city neighborhoods

The crisis opened up a national debate over a number of things – mainly lead exposure – but also a community's ability or inability to trust the leadership of their municipality and state to keep their residents safe. For Flint, the action regarding city's water system was taken by an Emergency Manager appointed by the governor, making decisions for that community without regard to local elected officials or citizens.

Those efforts proved not only to be a financial disaster but more disturbingly passed on lifelong learning impairments to children who were needlessly exposed to additional lead toxicity through the water pipes in their city. Between 2013 and 2015, elevated blood lead level (BLL) rates for children in Flint doubled, rising from 2 percent in 2013 to 4 percent in 2015.

That is "additional" exposure, because Flint, like Kalamazoo, was already listed as one of Michigan's 14 target communities for lead exposure before the recent disaster.

Paul Krugman Unironically Anoints Himself Arbiter of “Seriousness”: Only Clinton Supporters Eligible

For years, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has repeatedly complained about the D.C. orthodoxy-enforcing tactic of labeling only those who subscribe to Washington pieties as “Very Serious People,” or “VSPs.” It’s a term Krugman borrowed (with credit) from the liberal blogger Atrios, who first coined it to illustrate how Iraq War opponents were instantly marginalized in establishment discourse and only war advocates were deemed to be Serious. Krugman mockingly uses it so often that the New York Times created a special tag for the term. The primary purpose of the “VSP” tactic is to malign anyone who dissents from D.C. establishment pieties as non-Serious or un-Serious, thus demeaning the person as someone who can (and should) be ignored as residing on the fringe, unworthy of engagement or a real platform regardless of the merits of their position.

Perhaps announcing that Michael Jackson is going to be played by a white actor in the middle of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy wasn’t the best idea.

Joseph Fiennes, a British actor mostly known for his roles in Shakespeare in Love and more recently American Horror Story, has been cast to play the late King of Pop in what may be the strangest biopic ever.

Controversial French comedian Dieudonné denied entry to Hong Kong, Cyberport shows cancelled

A controversial “hate-speech” comedian with links to the far-right was on a plane back to Paris last night after being denied entry to Hong Kong where he had hoped to perform two shows.

French comic Dieudonne M’bala M’bala was detained by immigration officials at Hong Kong International Airport shortly after 7:30am yesterday after arriving on a flight from Bangkok following a trouble-free show in the Thai capital.

The block on Dieudonne’s entry came after high-level diplomatic interventions by Israel and France, who warned that his planned appearances – at a Cyberport venue last night and tonight – could have led to disorder and even violence if they went ahead.

SILVER MARKET IN DISARRAY AFTER BENCHMARK PRICE FIXED FAR BELOW SPOT RATE

The silver market was thrown into disarray on Thursday after the LBMA Silver Price was set 84 cents below the spot and futures price this morning.

The LBMA Silver Price – the crucial daily benchmark used by producers and traders around the world to settle silver products and derivatives contracts – was set at $13.58 per ounce.

At the time of the auction, which begins at 12 noon London time, the spot price was at $14.42 per ounce while the futures price on the CME was at $14.415, leaving a number of market participants extremely confused as to what has happened.

...

“Unfortunately, it’s not [a mistake],” Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy for Saxo Bank, told FastMarkets. “This could be the end of the fix. It took 14 minutes to find a fix – they obviously found a fix way off of the market.”

The event occurred when a Russian S U 27 jet fighter came within just 20 feet of a U S R C 1 35 reconnaissance aircraft when it was well within international airspace and far away from any Russian territory.

TOP BILDERBERGER: “GLOBAL SUPER ELITE” MUST STOP DONALD TRUMP

Regular Bilderberg attendee and associate editor of the Financial Times Martin Wolf insists that the “global super elite” must stop Donald Trump from winning the presidency.

According to a New Republic profile, Wolf is “staggeringly well-connected within the elite circles he is writing for” and counts amongst his close friends many influential central bankers.

In an editorial entitled The economic losers are in revolt against the elites, Wolf writes that economic “losers” have rejected “the elites that dominate the economic and cultural lives of their countries” and that “the potential consequences are frightening.”

Guantánamo Parole Board Clears Victim of Mistaken Identity – After 13 Years

This story makes me so angry that I can’t even come up with my usual snarky introduction. I only weep.

The Guantánamo parole board approved the release of a Yemeni “forever prisoner,” dismissing intelligence that imprisoned the man for 13 years without trial. And if that level of evil and scorn for justice doesn’t radicalize a 100 people to join ISIS, then nothing can.

Will the 2016 Primaries Be Electronically Rigged?

"You've heard the old adage 'follow the money.' I follow the vote, and wherever the vote becomes an electron and touches a computer, that's an opportunity for a malicious actor potentially to ... make bad things happen." — Steve Stigall, CIA cyber-security expert, in remarks to the US Election Assistance Commission

Primary election rigging in the coming weeks and months is all but assured if American voters and candidates don't take steps to prevent it now. Evidence that US voting systems are wide open to fraud and manipulation should be taken seriously in light of the unprecedented high-stakes elections we're facing.

Not in recent history have American voters been presented with such radically polarized candidates, forcing a crucial choice for the direction of our future, and possibly upending long-established centers of power.

Anti-depressants doubles a child’s risk of suicidal behaviour, say Danish researchers

Anti-depressants should be a doctor’s last resort when trying to treat children and adolescents with depression, according to the results of a new two year-long study.

The meta-analysis involved researchers conducting a systematic review of all available and relevant test data. Researchers examined 70 trials comparing antidepressants with placebos in order to find out how the use of antidepressants related to increases in suicide, suicidal behaviour and aggressive behaviour in young people.

In 11 of those trials, researchers found out that antidepressants doubled the risk of aggressive behaviour and suicidal behaviour in young people. Suicidal behaviour includes suicide thoughts and attempts, actual suicides and self-harming behaviour such as deliberately cutting oneself.

Sanders camp suspicious of Microsoft’s influence in Iowa Caucus

For the first time this year, Microsoft partnered with the Iowa Democratic and Republican Parties to provide a technology platform with which the parties will run their caucuses. The software giant created separate mobile apps for each party, which officials at hundreds of caucuses across the state will use to report out results from individual precincts to party headquarters for tabulation.

Other Sanders aides noted that Microsoft employees have donated several hundred thousand dollars to Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton over her career, and questioned why the Iowa Democratic Party didn’t partner with a software company based in Iowa.

Where was the FBI during the armed standoff in Oregon? Out of sight, but listening and watching

As the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon dragged on for most of January, local law enforcement was spread thin and federal agents were nowhere to be seen.

Behind the quiet facade, however, the FBI was running surveillance on the occupation and recording the activists’ public statements, mostly drawn from media reports and the activists' use of social media, while FBI agents encouraged locals to report their experiences with the new strangers in town.

Ex-CIA Agent Convicted in Rendition Case to be extradited to Italy by Order of Portuguese Court

A Portuguese court has decided to extradite an ex-CIA agent to Italy, where she has been convicted of involvement in the kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric under the U.S. "extraordinary rendition" program, legal papers showed on Friday.

Sabrina De Sousa, a joint U.S.-Portuguese citizen, was one of 26 people convicted in absentia on charges of snatching Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr from a street in Milan in 2003 and taking him to be questioned in Egypt.

The case focused attention at the time on the treatment of suspects moved around the world for interrogation in the wake of the Sep. 11 2001 attacks and strained relations between Washington and Rome.

Forecast: Distrust with chance of revolution

Then there’s the official lawlessness. The IRS, hiding from investigations that it targeted Tea Party groups, keeps “accidentally“ destroying hard drives. Hillary’s emails also keep mysteriously disappearing, and now the State Department has used the blizzard as an excuse for not producing court-ordered emails, though it’s known about the order for months. Writing in The Wall Street Journal, former attorney general Michael Mukasey says that Hillary should face criminal charges, but who really expects that? She’s politically untouchable, which says bad things about the rule of law.

Clinton Chief Of Staff Lost Her Personal Blackberry, Which Contained Classified Emails

While working as Hillary Clinton’s chief of staff at the State Department, Cheryl Mills lost her personal Blackberry, on which she sent emails that the State Department has determined contain classified information.

CNN has announced that they will air Trump’s rally that he is holding live opposite the Fox News Debate in a bit of a shameless ratings play. Why I Will Never Drink Another Starbucks Coffee Again: It Funds Planned Parenthood

Some of America’s top corporations have announced publicly that they do not support Planned Parenthood in light of revelations about their organ harvesting business. In July, Coca Cola, Ford Motor Company, the American Cancer Society, American Express and Xerox assured customers that even though they were listed as partners on Planned Parenthood’s website, they do not support them through donations.

Unfortunately, not all companies have followed suit. For example, pro-life customer Megan Fox wrote Starbucks a letter entitled, “Dear Starbucks, You Lost Me At Planned Parenthood”, after finding out they support the abortion company. She began her letter by explaining that she (like many Americans) loves their coffee and has been enjoying their products for years.

Newly-declassified report shows U.S. invaded Iraq with no hard evidence of WMDs

The George W. Bush administration based its rationale for war principally on the assertion that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) — yellow-cake uranium poison gas, biological weapons — and that Saddam’s government posed an immediate threat to the United States and its coalition allies. Saddam was also accused of of harboring and supporting al-Qaeda, the terrorist group identified as the instigator of 9/11.

The rationale for the Iraq War has since been discredited. But a newly-declassified report to the then-Joint Chiefs of Staff provides even more evidence that the Bush administration went to war with, at best, flimsy evidence of Iraq’s WMDs — a war in which 6,045 Americans lost their lives.

An American Amritsar - Judge Anna Von Reitz

We should have heard it at Ruby Ridge, and somehow, despite the facts, did not. A young Mother shot to death along with her baby and young son and the family dog for no reason by FBI Agents.

We should have heard it again at Waco, Texas. A private community of people invaded, gassed, fire bombed--- again, with no credible reason by federal agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Exactly where were the stockpiles of alcohol, tobacco, or firearms at Waco?

And now, a caravan of peaceful Americans on their way to a public meeting to discuss unlawful actions of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)-- ambushed, murdered in cold blood, and subjected to false arrest by members of the FBI and "STATE" police. What "STATE" of Oregon would that be? A bankrupt corporate franchise of the French Corporation known as the UNITED STATES, or the actual state of the Union owed to the people of Oregon?

Trouble Brewing in Syria: Is US-Led Coalition Preparing for Advance?

US Vice President Joe Biden's recent visit to Turkey indicates that Washington is not inclined to pressure Ankara into halting its anti-Kurdish crackdown nor its military deployments near the rich Iraqi oilfields of Mosul, F. William Engdahl notes.

On January 24 US Vice President Joseph Biden held intensive meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

F. William Engdahl, American-German researcher, historian and strategic risk consultant, believes that the Obama administration manipulates both the ambitious Turkish President Erdogan and the impulsive Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, indulging their militarism and greed.

"The Washington game seems to be to give the Saudi-Turkish duo enough rope to hang themselves in a mad power grab of Syrian and Iraqi oil riches and perhaps, if they are really mad enough, of Iran's oilfields too," the researcher remarks in his article for New Eastern Outlook.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF this report and analysis are true (and I have a great deal of respect for the work of Bill Engdahl), heaven help this planet.

There is going to be a point past which Russia cannot NOT respond militarily in Syria, and it almost appears that Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been tasked with "playing picador" here in a proxy war against Russia.

Turkey, a NATO member, may well be goaded by the US and NATO into making some kind of military aggression against Russia, then will invoke Article 5 of the NATO AGREEMENT, which states:

Highlights Collective defence means that an attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all Allies. The principle of collective defence is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States. NATO has taken collective defence measures on several occasions, for instance in response to the situation in Syria and in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. NATO has standing forces on active duty that contribute to the Alliance’s collective defence efforts on a permanent basis. This principle is enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack on one Ally shall be considered an attack on all Allies.

There is only two minor problems with declaring war against Russia, somewhat akin to twin 6,000 lb gorillas, snoozing on the Boesendorfer; neither the US, nor NATO, have the troop strength, the money, or the manufacturing to insure a positive outcome to a conventional war against Russia.

The second problem is that of the difference in the ethics, and performance, of weapons manufacturers, between Russia, the US, and the West.

When weapons developers in Russia deliver, their products work as advertised, and then some, upon first deployment.

With Western (and particularly US) weapons manufacturers, products are delivered late, flawed, and hopelessly over budget. If you want a glaring example of this, just look at what has happened to the US's F-35.
