Governments Shut Down the Internet More Than 50 Times in 2016

Governments around the world shut down the internet more than 50 times in 2016 – suppressing elections, slowing economies and limiting free speech.

In the worst cases internet shutdowns have been associated with human rights violations, Deji Olukotun, senior global advocacy manager at digital rights organisation Access Now told IPS.

“What we have found is that internet shutdowns go hand in hand with atrocities,” said Olukotun.

“In Ethiopia there’s been consistent blocking this year of social media and internet.” Dozens of people have died in protests in Ethiopia in 2016, “many of them during the kind of blackout where it’s difficult to report on what’s happening,” he said.

Several leaders used internet shutdowns to affect democratic processes, including elections.

U.S., MSM Claims Of Russian Hacking Lack One Important Ingredient … Evidence

By Brandon Turbeville

As 2016 comes to a close and, with it, the final 20 days of the dreadful Obama administration, a madness has gripped much of the country that has been concocted, promoted, and drilled into the American psyche by the U.S. government and its corporate media/intelligence agency controlled mainstream corporate media. This new narrative, which has a deeper hold within the American “leftists” (more accurately labeled Democrats) circles around the claims that Russia has essentially launched a coup in the United States by “hacking American elections.”

These claims have been repeated ad nauseum by the President, high-level politicians, and the corporate media ever since shortly after the Trump victory and in the wake of Clinton’s treachery being unearthed by WikiLeaks in the months prior. The U.S. government is now provoking Russia yet again based on something that appears completely fabricated as 2017 appears on the calendar...

What is Henry Kissinger Up To? — Paul Craig Roberts

Until Trump relegates 'the neocons' to the ideological backwaters, Russia and China had best hold on to their strategic alliance.

Kissinger, an old cold warrior, is working to use Trump’s commitment to better relations with Russia in order to separate Russia from its strategic alliance with China.

China’s military buildup is a response to US provocations against China and US claims to the South China Sea as an area of US national interests. China does not intend to attack the US and certainly not Russia.

Back to the Future: From the USSR to the Eurasian Century

Get ready, because the thick of the action starts now.

The 2008 casino capitalism-provoked financial crisis, plus the American “resolve” to remake the so-called Greater Middle East through wars of choice, regime change and covert ops miserably failed.

As we wait for the dawn of the Trump era – an almost intergalactic geopolitical question mark – what’s certain is that the War Party US deep state won’t admit defeat. And the key geopolitical riddle to be answered is how strident internal American tensions will deal with the hub of progressive Eurasia integration: Russia, China and Iran.

Family of disgraced WWII Pearl Harbor admiral calls on Obama to restore his reputation

Stripped of his command, humiliated Kimmel was summoned back to America from the base on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, knocked down to a two-star rear admiral, then pressured to retire early, making him a convenient scapegoat and a target of public loathing.

However, critics say the punishments were unjustified and that evidence shows Kimmel had been badly let down by President Franklin Roosevelt and military leaders in Washington.

Now, at the end of Obama’s eight years in office, there is growing hope among family members that the Hawaiian-born president will posthumously restore Admiral Kimmel’s four-star status.

Vice president Joe Biden has called the treatment of Kimmel “the greatest injustice in US military history”, but previous presidents have preferred to give the issue a wide berth.

Trump Promises a Revelation on Hacking

President-elect Donald J. Trump, expressing lingering skepticism about intelligence assessments of Russian interference in the election, said on Saturday evening that he knew “things that other people don’t know” about the hacking, and that the information would be revealed “on Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Speaking to a handful of reporters outside his Palm Beach, Fla., club, Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump cast his declarations of doubt as an effort to seek the truth.

The country is in the throes of a major epidemic, with no known cure and some pretty scary symptoms. It's called Trump Derangement Syndrome, or TDS, and it’s rapidly spreading from the point of origin – the political class – to the population at large.

More Bullsh*t Fake News from Washington Post

The Post’s story also predictably and very rapidly infected other large media outlets. Reuters thus told its readers around the world: “A malware code associated with Russian hackers has reportedly been detected within the system of a Vermont electric utility.”

What’s the problem here? It did not happen.

There was no “penetration of the U.S. electricity grid.” The truth was undramatic and banal. Burlington Electric, after receiving a Homeland Security notice sent to all U.S. utility companies about the malware code found in the DNC system, searched all their computers and found the code in a single laptop that was not connected to the electric grid.

Apparently, the Post did not even bother to contact the company before running its wildly sensationalistic claims, so they had to issue their own statement to the Burlington Free Press which debunked the Post’s central claim.

Gunman Kills At Least 39 In Attack On Istanbul Nightclub

A gunman opened fire on New Year revelers at a packed nightclub on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosphorus waterway on Sunday killing at least 39 people, including many foreigners, then fled the scene.

Some people jumped into the Bosphorus waters to save themselves after the attacker opened fire at random in the Reina nightclub just over an hour into the new year. Officials spoke of a single attacker but some reports, including on social media, suggested there may have been more.

The attack shook NATO member Turkey as it tries to recover from a failed July coup and a series of deadly bombings in cities including Istanbul and the capital Ankara, some blamed on Islamic State and others claimed by Kurdish militants.
The Hurriyet newspaper cited witnesses as saying the attackers shouted in Arabic as they opened fire at Reina.

Webmaster's Commentary:

First, condolences to the families and friends of those where were slain here, and prayers for those wounded, that they get the best of care, and recover soon.

But this attack follows an all-too-familiar, and terrifying, pattern; a gunman (or gunmen) enters a crowded place, and start killing people at random, then disappears into the night.

So I have to ask, in a very cold-blooded way, cui bono?!? Who benefits?!?

Jihadists, attempting to destabilise Turkey?!? Or the Turkish government itself, because now, as after the failed coup in July, they have an even larger "justification" for clamping down on human rights, and minorities?!? Or an attempt by Western nations to destabilise Turkey, because it sees, and feels,Turkey's shifting to become more Russia-Centric?!?

As reported at the atlantic.com last month:

For weeks, the main shopping areas of Turkey’s capital city have been eerily vacant. On October 29, the U.S. government advised family members of embassy staff to leave the country, while other nations sent out warnings, recommending their citizens avoid streets with high foot traffic throughout the month of December, in response to intelligence indicating a likely attack by the Islamic State. With two bombings and one assassination over the past ten days, everyone expected an attack of some sort in Ankara. But few would have predicted the form it would take, when, on Monday night, a 22-year-old police officer named Melvut Mert Altintas gunned down Andrey Karlov, Russia’s ambassador to Turkey. “God is great!” he shouted in Arabic, and “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria!” in Turkish, as he stood over Karlov’s motionless body. For months, Turkey has been unraveling. Shortly after the attempted coup of July 15, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government announced a state of emergency to remove any lingering threats from supporters of Fethullah Gulen, the exiled religious and political leader who the state blames for orchestrating the failed putsch, as well as people affiliated with the Kurdish movement. Mass purges touched nearly all job sectors, with education and the state judicial system taking the biggest hits. Anyone suspected of a crime could be held for 30 days without charge in detention centers where inmates are reportedly being tortured. RELATED STORY Flag-wrapped coffin of late Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov is carried to a plane during a ceremony at Esenboga airport in Ankara, Turkey on December 20, 2016. 'Russia Through Turks' Eyes' Even the most mundane rituals changed. An extra security check was installed in airports, just after the second set of x-ray machines, where Turkish citizens—as opposed to foreigners—are closely monitored. In the corners of once-bustling restaurants, the prospect of civil war with the Kurds is a common topic of discussion; the slowing economy is another, as the Turkish lira breaks its own record lows against the U.S. dollar from one week to the next. A vacuum salesman told me he no longer made a profit at the current exchange rate; a wine seller said he’s on the verge of closing his shop.

We cannot know for certain who orchestrated this crime; but my sense, right now, is that it was an outside state actor of some kind, who has a goal of completely destabilising the Turkish government.

2016 Greatest Hits: Presenting The Most Popular Articles Of The Past Year(ZeroHedge.com)

As we had warned for years, the vast if silent majority, feeling snubbed and neglected by the political oligarchy and the world's central bankers, decided to take the power back which they did within the confines of the democratic process, sending the establishment reeling, by rejecting years of legacy narratives, first by voting to divorce the UK from Europe, and then to replace decades of a failed, and flawed, political regime in the US with something... different.

It remains to be seen if these changes will be successful and bear fruit, or if they will be a change for the worse. However, the simple reality is that people had enough and wanted change. This, in the words of the established media, was called "populism", and the transformation process which allowed it to take place was maligned under the umbrella definition of "fake news." EPA To Alaskans In Sub-Zero Temps: Stop Burning Wood To Keep Warm

In Alaska’s interior, where it can reach -50 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, the EPA wants people to stop burning wood. But it's just about their only feasible way to stay warm.
By John Daniel Davidson

In Jack London’s famous short story, “To Build A Fire,” a man freezes to death because he underestimates the cold in America’s far north and cannot build a proper fire. The unnamed man—a chechaquo, what Alaska natives call newcomers—is accompanied by a wolf-dog that knows the danger of the cold and is wholly indifferent to the fate of the man. “This man did not know cold. Possibly, all the generations of his ancestry had been ignorant of cold, of real cold, of cold 107 degrees below freezing point. But the dog knew; all its ancestry knew, and it had inherited the knowledge.”

Sydney welcomes in 2017 with 'best fireworks in the world' as it waves goodbye to New Year's Eve

Australia has welcome in the New Year in style with a spectacular firework display over the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

Hundreds of thousands lined the streets to watch what some have described as "the best fireworks in the world".

Webmaster's Commentary:

Claire and I were in Sydney Harbor for New Year's 1999. And when I say we were in the harbor, I mean we were on a tall ship in the middle of the harbor, with the fireworks surrounding us on all sides. But there is more to the Sydney New Year's than the fireworks. There were barges set up all across the harbor with these huge drums and amazing drummers all painted up in bright colors, pounding out a beat, all in perfect synchronization and being broadcast over the radio as well. It was the best New Year's celebration we ever experienced, and it makes what they will (legally) do here in Hawaii look like a damp sparkler in comparison!

Russian operation hacked a Vermont utility, showing risk to U.S. electrical grid security, officials say

One example is when Obama and Kerry insisted Assad was gassing his own Alawite supporters with banned Sarin gas. (The United Nations concluded the US-backed rebels were doing it to frame Assad). What was missing from that particular pile of government and corporate media bovine excrement was a REASON for Assad to do something that stupid, knowing it would open the door to a US invasion.

The same applies here with the claim Russia is going to hack our power system and cause a blackout. There is no MOTIVE for Putin to do such a thing, knowing it would allow the warhawks to launch the war against Russia they are longing for (as long as someone else's kids are killed and crippled in it).

Look at how many times we have been lied to to trick us into wars. Lusitania and weapons, torpedoes in the Gulf of Tonkin, Spanish mine in Havana Harbor, and so forth.

Fool me once...

Israel's never-ending crimes: It's not just settlements. Israel has not just committed unspeakable acts of genocide but done so with absolute transparency.

In its least appealing landscape painting, it would appear that the resolution seemingly bestows upon already completed settlements de facto legitimacy and addresses only that part of the building glut currently under way or planned for tomorrows yet to come.

To make matters worse, despite its gratuitous dicta, the resolution remains very much a toothless declaration without any enforcement mechanism whatsoever - essentially relying upon a sudden burst of Israeli conscience to reverse a steady march of indifference to international law that has led Israel's way since the very first day it was manufactured from stolen land in Palestine.

Something About This Russia Story Stinks

In an extraordinary development Thursday, the Obama administration announced a series of sanctions against Russia. Thirty-five Russian nationals will be expelled from the country. President Obama issued a terse statement seeming to blame Russia for the hack of the Democratic National Committee emails.

Taibbi: 'Washington Post' 'Blacklist' Story Is Shameful and Disgusting
The capital's paper of record crashes legacy media on an iceberg
"These data theft and disclosure activities could only have been directed by the highest levels of the Russian government," he wrote.

Russia at first pledged, darkly, to retaliate, then backed off. The Russian press today is even reporting that Vladimir Putin is inviting "the children of American diplomats" to "visit the Christmas tree in the Kremlin," as characteristically loathsome/menacing/sarcastic a Putin response as you'll find.

Webmaster's Commentary:

After the WMD fiasco which led to the war in Iraq, nothing either the US government or the corporate presstitutes say can ever, ever be believed again, period, end of discussion.

There was utterly zero evidence of proof, either in the FBI, or DHS reports, that Russia did this at all.

What annoys the Democrats greatly is that the pettiness; corruption; warlust; crassness; and inherent lack of vision on the part of their critically flawed candidate actually came to light through some of these email exchanges.

And rather than do a sang-foid post-mortem on why their candidate lost the election, being pathologically incapable of admitting where the DNC went wrong, they decided, collectively, to blame SOMEBODY for the loss; that "Somebody" turned out to be the Russian government.

Taibbi is utterly correct to be reviewing this fantasy coming from the White House with extreme skepticism; I hope that his brother and sister reporters in the independent media are equally skeptical, as they cover it.

And remember: this is not the first time Obama's administration has accused Russia of doing something they absolutely did not do, as a reason to slam sanctions against them; remember the charges that "Russia annexed Crimea" a couple of years ago?!? It never happened.

Russia did not annex Crimea

"Something Stinks" - Like Iraq WMD Fiasco, Russia Story Doesn't Add Up

Yesterday, President Obama expelled 35 Russian “Operatives” from the Russian Embassy.

Is there any evidence those expelled are “intelligence operatives”? Any hard evidence Russia was behind the Hillary hacks? Any credible evidence that Putin himself is to blame?

The answers are No, No, and No. Yet, once again the American press is again asked to co-sign a dubious intelligence assessment.

US Expulsions Cost Russia’s San Francisco Consulate Their Chef

The 35 Russian diplomats expelled, however, don’t appear to have been linked to any spying activity, at least not in any evidence offered in the course of the administration ordering them out of the country. Four were working at the Russian Consulate in San Francisco.

The Consul General in San Francisco is none too happy over it, either, not the least of which because one of the four expelled is the consulate’s chef, meaning that the remaining diplomats will have to cook for themselves for the New Years holiday.

Consular officials say they intend to keep the consulate open as usual, but that some services may be temporarily limited because they are a bit short on help. For most at the consulate, however, the biggest shortage will be in perogies, as
they await a new chef.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Not the Chef! Now, that is cruel and unusual punishment!!

BEX ALERT - Liberal activists accuse Trump of flirting with treason for praising Putin

Liberal activists turned to Twitter to suggest President-elect Donald Trump was nearing the line of treason with his Friday praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I don't think Trump committed treason with this tweet, but he's in the neighborhood," tweeted ThinkProgress Editor Judd Legum.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Treason is defined as giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war. Despite the Russia bashing in the corporate media, we are not at war with Russia, and simply praising someone is hardly aid and comfort that could alter the outcome of a war were we at war with Russia.

Treason is more aptly applied to the supplying of weapons to ISIS and Al Qaeda, our declared enemies in the declared war on terror, such as Obama and Clinton have been exposed as doing.

But don't expect the liberal whiners or the corporate media to mention that!
