The Times Of India is now reporting that Pakistan's former ISI director-general Lt-Gen Mahmud Ahmad was linked to one of the supposed hijackers and sent financial support to the man.
This development greatly complicates the picture of what is going on in central Asia.
The first assessment would be that Pakistan isn't quite the friend and supporter the US thought.
However, new information suggests that Ahmad was actually working for the CIA.
The danger for the US is that once again our government has been supporting a military dictatorship, that of Pakistan's Pervez Musharraf, over a democratically elected government that represents the will of the people. As was the case in Iran, Pakistan could emerge with a new government quite hostile to America and American interests. This would mean not just one, but two nations that hate the US because of its foreign policy, standing in the way of the Caspian Sea pipeline.
