THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"Public statements of non-belief are treated as threatening, an affront to the religious, while the reverse is not true. More concerning is the enduring assumption that religious belief does not have to earn respect like any other view, an approach that has caused politicians and public figures across the UK to withdraw from asking the vital question: why is religion given such special status in government, culture and the media? Why is belief in a higher power an indication of greater moral fortitude, character and acumen?" -- Richard Dawkins

100 ISIS Terrorists Caught in Guatemala as Central American Caravan Heads to U.S.

In a startling revelation, Guatemala’s president announced in the country’s largest newspaper that nearly 100 ISIS terrorists have been apprehended in the impoverished Central American nation. Why should Americans care about this? A caravan of Central American migrants is making its way north. Let’s not forget that Guatemala is one of the countries that bombarded the U.S. with illegal immigrant minors under Barack Obama’s open border free-for-all. They came in droves from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala through the Mexican border and for years Uncle Sam rolled out the welcome mat offering housing, food, medical treatment and a free education

UN ‘Sheriff’: Nikki Haley Elevated Israel, Damaged US Standing
***
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, has made her post a “more glamorous” position than her predecessors — as President Donald Trump described Haley’s 2-year term at the U.N., following her resignation announcement.

We may never know the nature of Haley’s purported ‘glamour’ at the U.N., but we certainly know that, during her relatively brief stint, Haley has further diminished her country’s struggling reputation, entrenching U.S. isolation in the world’s most vital international political body.

In her own words, Haley concluded that her mission at the U.N. was accomplished, commending herself on three achievements: the U.S. has become more respected, it saved a lot of money, and it strongly defended Israel against U.N. ‘bias.’

You Want to Make America Great Again?

You Want to Make America Great Again? Start by Making America Free Again

Living in a representative republic means that each person has the right to take a stand for what they think is right, whether that means marching outside the halls of government, wearing clothing with provocative statements, or simply holding up a sign.

That’s what the First Amendment is supposed to be about.

Yet through a series of carefully crafted legislative steps and politically expedient court rulings, government officials have managed to disembowel this fundamental freedom, rendering it with little more meaning than the right to file a lawsuit against government officials.

Which way to Mecca? Turkish imam finds faithful had been praying in wrong direction for 37 years

Muslims in a village in western Turkey have been forced to ‘realign’ their beliefs after learning that they had been praying in the wrong direction for nearly four decades due to a faulty floor plan at their local mosque.
Imam Isa Kaya decided to investigate rumors that the congregation at his mosque in the village of Sugoren had been praying facing the wrong direction. In the Islamic faith, prayers should be performed in the direction of Mecca.

After appealing to the office of the regional mufti, Kaya was shocked to learn that the gossip was true – the mosque, which had been built in 1981, suffered from an embarrassing design error: the niche in the wall of the mosque indicating the direction of Mecca was around 30 degrees off its mark.

Evidence suggests crown prince ordered Khashoggi killing, says ex-MI6 chief

A former head of MI6 has said all the evidence suggests Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was behind the death of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and that the theory that rogue elements in the Saudi military were responsible was “blatant fiction”.

Sir John Sawers told the BBC his assessment was based on conversations with senior Whitehall sources and his knowledge of the Turkish intelligence services.

The comments came after Donald Trump said he presumed Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was dead and that the consequences for Saudi Arabia would be “very severe” if its leaders were found to have ordered the dissident journalist’s killing.

US shale’s glory days are numbered

There are some early signs that the US shale industry is starting to show its age, with depletion rates on the rise.

A study from Wood Mackenzie found that some wells in the Permian Wolfcamp were suffering from decline rates at or above 15 percent after five years, much higher than the 5 to 10 percent originally anticipated. “If you were expecting a well to hit the normal 6 or 8 percent after five years, and you start seeing a 12 percent decline, this becomes more of a reserves issue than an economics issue,” said R.T. Dukes, a director at industry consultant Wood Mackenzie Ltd., according to Bloomberg. As a result, “you have to grow activity year over year, or it gets harder and harder to offset declines.”

Vietnam War hero sentenced to 7 years for decades-old rifle purchase

A decorated Vietnam veteran and firearms collector was sentenced to seven years in federal prison Wednesday for a decades-old purchase of a rifle.
Alfred Pick, 70, purchased the M14 -- a fully automatic weapon illegal to own -- at a Ft. Worth gun show in the early 1980s, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The rifle, which had a scratched-off serial number, was similar to the one Pick used as an Army lieutenant in Vietnam, where he earned a Silver Star after participating in more than 100 combat missions and his brief time as a POW.
"The man is a Silver Star winner, he saved lives, he took care of his wife, he’s been in custody for a year, I would think that when a man turned 70 and is an American hero you don't destroy the rest of his life for one mistake," Mark Shackelford, a friend, told KDFW-TV.
Shackelford called the weapon the "piece de resistance" of Pick’s collection, adding that "He had shown it to me. I've never seen it taken out of the case.

Jamal Khashoggi's murder: The West's selective outrage

The outrage by western governments is in stark contrast to their silence and, in the case of the US and UK, their active support of Saudi Arabia's bloody war in Yemen
***
If indeed Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October, either deliberately or as the result of interrogation by "rogue" elements from the Saudi authorities, then it is a legitimate source of outrage. This would be murder, by a state - or the organs of a state - of an unarmed journalist, without judicial process, on diplomatic ground outside the territory of the perpetrators' country.

It is this dreadful cocktail of circumstances that explains the general outrage that it has sparked.
